I have used air assisted airless since the 80’s. The hvlp with the big hose and larger gun size is more clumsy going into cabinet shelves
than the g40 with two skinny joined hoses and small gun into cabinets. These guys only seem to use these small orifice 10 thousandth tips
for acrylic paint. Numerous times they claim to use a 310 tip with very high airless pressure like 2900. The graco reps never advise using such
A small orifice unless it’s clear lacquer or thinned oil base enamel, probably thinned with a hotter solvent like naphtha. The fine finish system was designed for efficiency. Use a larger orifice since the pressure for a fflp tip is half the normal psi on an airless pump around 1000- 1200 psi
Very little overspray with amazing paint transfer efficiency. Hvlp full acrylics require thinning the paint a lot more than air assisted airless spraying
Don’t be afraid to get more speed for production and use a 414 fflp tip in the air assisted tip guard. The guys used a 10 thousandth tip size and said it was slow. Sometimes to compromise, you will get a super finish with the 414 slightly more added air to atomize but get more speed
and production with closer to package consistency viscosity of your acrylics, less chance of runs in closed environments and more paint mil coverage. Sometimes people will get mislead and listen to guys like these that say “ but this is what we do “ they have been stuck using small tip sizes with super high fluid psi to get a heavy viscosity unthinned paint to squeeze it thru a tiny orifice , and are finally looking at this new approach
Since we have known about air assisted in the 80’s .I have all the guns from binks, Wagner and graco. I have 42 yrs as a painting contractor
Spraying anything you can imagine. Keep an open mind you painters just starting out, graco fflt low pressure tips are fantastic

I've been in business since '95 and am still learning! Thanks for your input. I am in the middle of a cabinet job and am shooting Dunn Edwards Enduracat. Ive always used my HVLP but tried a 410 fflp with my airless. The fflp sprayed the BIN Shallac primer absolutely flawlessly, but the Enduracat, not so much. It would be great for baseboards and doors and jams but too much spitting for cabinets.
On the HVLP, I got perfect atomization but a few runs and sags here and there.
It sounds like you are saying I can get the same atomization without thinning or with little thinning thereby achieving a much better build without the runs, well, barring a bad burrito for lunch! Lol!
Anyway, my question is, when considering a finished job, is there any observable difference between the two setups? If not, i'm saving up for the air assisted 395.
      Thanks!

I have been using an ultra 395 and a 2cfm compressor with graco g40 Gun for years now. My gun uses flat tips not switch, I think this is an important difference as my air cap and tips are very different . My version of the g40 gun is marketed to industry and large scale wood finishing. The switch tip seems to be for the professional wall painter. With the rite set up you can spray anything as fast as a straight airless and with 30-40% less paint. I’m a finisher and usually use my Sata pressure fed hvlp guns for most fine finish jobs mainly because of clean up, and speed of material changes. but for big jobs there’s nothing like air assisted airless. I actually mostly paint entire interiors and paint exteriors with mine. The last job I did was a 2300 squ ft 2 story house. Existing paint was in good shape. I did 3 coats tinted fresh start, 2 coats ultra spec I was using 1/4 turn on fluid presser air pressure at 15psi 617tip . Total paint use 4gal primer 7 gal finish. Masking and painting done solo in 1.5 days. Also you can spray at such lower pressure than airless that often you don’t have to mask as much if at all and your masking stays put. Thanks for the vid guys but maybe play around some more with it and ask grace to send you the g40 that takes flat tips. There’s nothing better for me than not running out of paint and it’s great for our world. Think if you had 30% of the money back you have spent on paint or the time you spent to go back to the store or if the stack of paint in your garage wasn’t there.

Bill Redding I noticed that he was using the air assist with an fflp tip. I thought you only use the air assist if your using the flat tip set up? If your using the traditional airless tip you just use the machine like a regular airless. I’m I correct?

I have been painting since 1979. I agree with the airless for the interior trim comments. I have used small double orifice tips to spray everything from enamel to hundreds of gallons of old fashioned lacquer. I am sure my liver does not miss those days. That being said. I just got the 595 air assisted from Graco. Mainly to spray Protectosil anti graffiti. " We do a lot of schools." I will try to use the air assisted to spray 2 component solvent based urethane for some steel railings. The conventional works, but is slow. The airless even with the small tip is prone to runs. I can pull it off, but the younger guys are struggling with it, and I don't want to spend all summer spraying at schools. My hope is the new pump will hit somewhere in the middle between speed and runs. Gotta work the bugs out of all the new toys before I can put in my two cents.

Hi from Australia, great work mate! I use a Wagner air assisted airless with a flat tip, just for doors and trims absolutely love it, also I use oil based paints that’s where I think those units excel just enough control and speed for me ,I’ve only played around with the unit with water based enamel I didn’t see much of and advantage but that was with the reversible tip and air cap, I normally use 09/40 flat tip , 1000psi fluid pressure and 2bar air pressure on full open fan, when fan closed I drop air pressure to around 1bar because it distorts the spray pattern , I also thin the oil based with enamel thinners normally around 20% that works for my set up .

Im looking into this system for site finishing/touch up of millwork. Currently I lug around a 30 gallon 5 hp compressor to run a Kremlin AA 10:1 pump with a Kremlin ExCite gun.
I like the idea of consolidating both pieces of equipment into one lighter smaller portable rig. I would like to know how well this compressor handles condensation? Does it put out much moisture in humid weather? Does it have a built in water separator? I would also like to know if the little compressor can keep up with spraying out full wall panel? I often have to re-coat large areas of pre-finished wainscot, trim, panels, etc... My 30 gallon can keep up with the AA gun in most instances, cant imagine a little 2 gallon tank can do the job. Can anyone with real life experience comment please.

Guess I'd also like to know if anyone has run a different gun on this rig, like say the Kremlin Excite i currently run? Would the compressor handle the cfm requirements of other makes of guns? Im seeing in comments here that there are some complaints of spitting and other pattern issues. Makes me wonder if its the gun and tips, or the pump/compressor, or operator.... Im stuck on the compressor being undersized for all day spray jobs.

Too many painters will not try very hard to make a new tool work. Way too soon they will go back to how they were doing it and give up trying to figure out why the new thing might be better. I remember when hand maskers 1st came out. Our Boss brought out 5 of them to a good sized job we were on. I was still an apprentice. The older painter could not be bothered with the bosses new plastic thingy's. I grabbed one after a couple of days, and masked of all the base in the upstairs in a day. This was a 9000 foot home. OK, I'll just have to try one. I not sure about Idaho's regulations, here in Salt Lake City all paints sold have low VOC requirements. I used to pride myself on my spayed trim and doors. Not so much any more. Latex enamels do not flow and in some cases they don't even blend, just leaving minute patterns not quite filled. Thinning doesn't help, The best finishes have a fine orange peal. I'm wondering if an air assisted airless would do a better finish. Holding an HVLP cup gun all day doesn't sound like fun. @@Idahopainter

It also depends what type of finish you want to have , I wouldn't brush and roll that fireplace mantle because it wouldn't look nice , masking is 80% of the painting job the rest is quick spray and clean up, that's my experience and yes I do brush and roll most of the time, depending on the project budget as well

If your hvlp only has gravity feed, then get a pressure cup for it to spray the thicker stuff. If it doesnt have a port on the side, you may want to upgrade to a better hvlp that has been tested and designed for thicker paints. Typiclly, you would see 4 or 5 diffrent hvlp guns in a spray shop some as many as 10 depending on the wood shops specality. Most good hvlp brands have a chart that is based on viscosity of the paint that you are using. My apollo has tips up to 2.2mm. The bigest hold back is the amount of air you might need for heavy paints. 1. Find out how much air you can send through your gun, 2. Find out the vescosity of your paint. 3. Adjust your paint to your guns tip size and air limit to keep production up. You can also thin the paint as needed to maximize flow or adjust setting times etc. You can always shoot through a slightly smaller tip but you loose speed.

ajo lote not that one. My boss has the 695 air assisted pump. It's the big boy and it's a great reliable spray pump. We use it a lot. We use it without the air when doing regular spray jobs like spraying ceilings, priming houses and also spraying bodies on exteriors. I highly recommend the Titan 695 air assisted spray pump. I have never been a fan of Graco spray pumps. I think a lot has to do with the way I was taught from my old man, who painted for 35yrs before he passed away last year. Another painter I know had 2 Graco airless spray pumps and both shit the bed on him in less than a year. One of them the housing cracked where the piston is and the other one had problem after problem. The one that cracked was the Graco Pro X19 which was $700+ and the other one was Graco Magnum X7 which was $349. I have had my Titan 660 for 20yrs now, which was my Dads and has many many hours of spraying and the only thing that it has had done was being repacked once in a while. They don't make the 660 anymore and haven't for years but it's a great dependable spray pump. I'm a Titan fan and always will be. They make a better product hands down. If I were you and you are in the market for a spray pump buy a Titan and you won't be disappointed.

Jeff Froment x19 and x7 are not even worth mentioning or even comparing to a titan 695, x19 and x7 are for homeowners who dont know any better and sold in home depot which should tell you enough. all that said, I love titans, I have 3 of them but the main reasons why I like titans are, easier to fix, cheaper to fix and reliable machines if you take care of them, or not. lol, graco are just to loud for me and expensive to maintain.

I’ve had a Graco Ultimate 490 on wheels, for 10 years now and all I’ve had to do is repack the seals. I replaced the piston at that same time because it was scored up from not using enough Throat Seal Liquid. Anyway, just like any manufacturer of any product, Graco makes economy pumps, and heavier duty ones. Any of those pumps you find at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot aren’t meant for daily use, more like moderate to minimal.

Air assisted airless vs airless vs hvlp is that the air assisted airless is going to be the most efficient system. Airless will blow way more product into the air and hvlp will be better than a airless with the most control but it too will waste more product. As of now the Kremlin airmix is the best gun available and no hvlp can compare

Save it for laquers, stains and clear coats. The housings are $80 a pop, and they clog after 3-5 gallons, then constantly need to be maintained after. Total pain.
The new FFT tips made these machines irrelevant for latex oil or hybrid millwork top coat.
But, because the gun comes with a flat tip conversion, these machines are the bee's knees for cabinet refinishing.

I'm sorry but what painter besides an automotive one uses an hvlp constantly? I only use hvlps for 2 part paints where I dont want to ruin my airless packings and hose, I dont ever use an hvlp or turbine sprayers for latex or oils, its just not worth the time it takes to dilute the products, an airless assist is the way to go if you are looking for that extra edge in fine finish, its not meant to replace your airless, even though it can be used as one. alot they didnt say in this video, they should have study the product more to give better information.
pretty bad review in my opinion, I bet graco wants they're sprayer back, lol

Be very very careful. This unit will SPIT!! A Surge of paint glob all over your surfaces. Even if you switch to a Flat Tip which you should it will still spit. Many many have complained of this including me. I still use my pump and love the lightweight gun but its got issues. Keep a toothbrush and some water to clean air holes on gun to help prevent the speits.
