In connection to the Brewmaster's interest in Occultism, it's worth noting that the Tear X-Tractors are called Sacrificial Altar's in the game's files. This suggests that the Brewmaster's motive may not be profit, but a form of financing and enabling his own religious radicalism.
Ooh, really!? That's really interesting! And very creepy. Didn't know about this, that's really fascinating to find out. I wonder if Oddworld Inhabitants originally intended to explore this more in the game.... it'd be interesting to find out. Thank you! :)
@@pupbenny ancient Glukens were dark magicians. The Mudokens insulted them by declaring themselves the chosen race after a Mudoken hand appeared on the face of the moon. The Glukens became fiercely competitive and resentful toward the Mudoken because if this. Thier ancient alchemy evolved into the science we see today. Thier greed and status chasing comes from a deeper obsession with self worth and proving ones superiority. They rejected the natural order and changed from a noble race of spiritual beings, to a spiteful race looking to reshape the world in thier image. If the Gods would place them below the Mudoken, then to hell with the Gods! To hell with the balance of nature and the status queue. They endeavored to prove they were the masters of this world. Even going so far as to destroy the old world in order to remold it. This is why they gleefully defile nature and weaker creatures. Despite rejecting the old pantheon and nature: thier alchemy (the basis of thier understanding of reality) was thier pride. And so buried under thier blue prints and schematics, at the core of every industrial guild, is alchemy and dark magic. Stolen from a shameful place in time when the Gluken and Mudoken were equals. It would be fascinating to see how the Gluken reconcile their ancient dark arts with the spiritual world they rejected. They would never abandon such power, but thier pride would not allow them to acknowledge thier humble origins. So how much of the old dark arts remain known to the modern Gluken would be a guilty secret known only by the most powerful Gluken.
Glukkon society turned to dark magic and alchemy to outcompete the ancient mudokans so it stands to reason hes using those roots to reinforce his position
@pupbenny helpful points for you to know, the Glukkons and Mudokans were equals in ancient times and even allies, until the Mudo moon shows up and the ancient mudokans declare themselves the chosen people, so the Glukkons became jealous and turned away from their shamanism to practice alchemy and dark magic to gain power over their neighbors. Modern glukkons abandoned magic entirely except apparently the Brewmaster who seems to either be considering its use or already implementing it. Also to note, Glukkons use their arms as feet to walk because their legs shriveled up and are basically like little t Rex limbs tucked beneath them. They wear big suits with wide shoulders to look imposing to others but they just hide their weak physical nature. Even sligs are physically stronger than Glukkons. Their power is in their appearance of strength
The character design and animations truly fascinate me. I can't help but marvel at how the glukkons are animated, their exaggerated jaw and lip motion is impressive. I had to double check that the original really came out in 1997 as even that is extremely impressive for the time.
Yeah the original games had really amazing animations, I remember being a child and knowing Oddworld as 'the game that had really realistic graphics (in the cutscenes)' back when pretty much no other games that I knew of did. The quality was just amazing, and now with Oddworld: Soulstorm they really took it up to another level. Apparently they put a lot of effort into the cinematics to have film-like quality as a kind of investment for the potential of doing a series, or something like that.
I find it interesting how in Oddworld: Soulstorm we learn that The Brewmaster is seemingly one of the most important figures in Magog society due to how big a role he serves to the Glukkons. I suppose, in Soulstorm 'The Brewmaster' is known by that name due to how important that role has become. Yet, perhaps in Exoddus the character is known as 'The Brewmaster' for the opposite reasons, due to how unimportant he is. Just a weird loner working in the basement with one job, the other Glukkons don't even bother knowing his actual name (assuming he has one) and just calls him by his role (unlike the other Glukkons who all have proper names). Also the thought occurred to me while editing that maybe Morguer is a title too, but I'm not sure.
You say Occult. I say Alchemy. Similar enough, but alchemy was a study used by the Christians of its time. And considering the fact the brew used Mudokon bones, which seem implied to retain portions of Mudokon spirit energy within... (along with the tears as well, so that's at least the 'alchemy salt' sorted...) Ah, the badge even mentioned Alchemy. Good.
I also found the Paper on the Tape reading "Projekt: "Soulstorm" with a three headed Eagle creature holding a Fasces and what appears to be a Yoke from Falangism which are both Fascist symbols to be kind of funny and relatable. The Magog Cartel is Fascist but not explicitly about racial superiority but other kinds of aspects such as corporatism which is the collectivization of corporate groups which was enacted by Fascist groups. During the Nazi era in Germany, a lot of German Corporations had benefited and were apart of the Nazi Party's activities. Various industries were nationalized to eliminate Trade Unions. So yeah, fair to say your quite right on the Glukkons looking like Nazis. There's more to Fascism than racial superiority and Jingoistic Nationalism.
@@ChrisKunix Very good points! A lot of people look at these kinds of things in a very, I guess, black and white way, when in reality they're far more defined and nuanced than what people generally seem to initially take them as, or use them as. You've noticed some really interesting things here that a lot of people wouldn't realise or think about! Thank you for this analysis! :)
@@pupbenny this game is all about occult and the brew refers to adrenochrome, its made from bones and adrenaline glands & bone marrow are primary sources of harvesting adrenochrome.
The brewmaster has a certain german accent. In germany we speak the letter 's' very different than in english. Its always sounding sharp, even when we speak it in a soft manner. It has always some bite in it. The pronounciation of the 's' is literally how germans would pronounce it. Source: Myself, since I'm german
Ahh, thank you for your insight! :) I'm glad to hear this as I wasn't sure if I was mistaken, so it's good to know that it is actually a german accent, thank you. :)
I think another fun thing to note was the fact that, well, when Aslik and Morguer arrived to confront the Brewmaster at the end of the game? They start off confident, insulting him while the door remained closed, but once the door opens you can see the fear in their eyes. Hell, they even had to hype themselves up by putting on a stern façade before entering his office and speaking to him. It's one look, but it speaks volumes. They are absolutely terrified of him, and the last Glukkon I knew that gained that kind of fear was Molluck himself. Edit: Okay I just got to the part where you mentioned that exact thing, but I'm gonna keep my post the way it is because I really like the scene XD
Haha, thank you for your comment! :D I'm really glad that other people notice this stuff too, it's really great that people notice the details they put into it that can easily be missed. I'm glad you kept your comment the same, I love hearing what people think of these things so thank you very much! :D
@@pupbenny Happy to hear! Keep up with the amazing content! You’re probably one of the only youtubers who go this in depth on oddworld lore and it’s amazing.
Brew masters accent is a stereotypical evil type 1 as a example for the creator of godzilla described for ghidorah as maniacal and cackling as it isn't trying to be deep and intimatijg but a derange opportunised as in contrast to other godzilla villans whose roar would shake and rumbber putting lessers in terror ghidorah is high pitched and chattery like hes always got a anterior motive seems the same for brue master @pupbenny
The symbol on the chalkboard isn't just occult, it's ALCHEMICAL, which means it's likely tied to his craft. Alchemists used a lot of symbols to depict reactions, elements, and recipes. It was basically chemistry filtered through a mystic lens.
just found out about this game during the weekend and I think the Glukkons are a prime example of villains who are infinitely cooler and more interesting than the good guys. From their design to the way they are animated, written and voiced, everything just makes them a joy to watch
I honestly love the injection of character into the Glukkons. They always had some, but the new installments really bumped it up to eleven. Really hoping we see Mullock go through some sort of “They see me as a bad guy? I’ll give them a bad guy!” character arc. Not becoming a good guy, but leading a private slig army around as a corsair against the Glukkons. You’ve brought it up before that the Sligs are stuck in servitude to the Magog cartel, I think an interesting story arc for Mullock would be to see him make a grab for the Slig queen. His plan being to deprive the Magog cartel of guards through stealing away their Sligs. Without the brews or guards control, the entire Magog cartel would be forced to come crawling back to Mullock or else watch as their mudokon workforce overthrows them. If they want to blame him for revolts, he might as well get paid for it!
I love the idea of Molluck acting as a corsair. Made me wonder, considering they're a society that uses airships, if they do have rogues, like pirates, going about in airships, plundering places and causing somewhat of chaos. Would be an interesting concept.
I mean, I imagine the Magog cartel would just outsource to the other species to be their guards. If the voice on the phone in Soulstorm really was a Wolvark, we could very well see a Molluck's Slig private army VS the Magog's hired Wolvark mercenary force. See who comes out on top, you know.
I feel like the Exodus Brewmaster would've been a "Pud" on the Glukkon hierarchy, not interested in achieving personal power through playing the game but instead far more focused on perfecting his art form of choice. He'd have gained his position through his results but wouldn't be respected by his peers. By contrast, the Soulstorm Brewmaster could be seen as an entrepreneur, taking his idea and going into business for himself. Far more financially savvy than his previous counterpart. Just looking into the contrast between the Brewmasters of the two games.
Yeah very good analysis's! It's really interesting how they basically took the same concept of a character but took it in two completely different directions for each game.
For the Brewmaster it was an easy choice. Do I believe my brew that has worked flawlessly for decades without any issue suddenly stopped working out of nowhere? Or is it that guy making up stories about magic slaves?
Perhaps the 'occult symbols' on his blackboard are actually ancient mudokon symbols. The brewmaster is 'researching' them to better understand the mudokons in order to make his brew more effictive. Capturing the mudokons by ensnaring their minds hearts and even..... Souls.
Finally a video about the Brewmaster. It's funny, compared to Exoddus's Brewmaster, Soulstorm's Brewmaster was in a "higher" position in terms of influence and threat. I always wondered if this new Brewmaster was more highly ranked than Molluck... I was thinking about it, Molluck was a representative of the Magog Cartel, he was a high ranked member, and favorite Lady Margaret's son. He was feared by his fellow colleagues and other Glukkons from the Magog Cartel. But now, judging by what we actually know about the Brewmaster, it's confusing, because he was just called "The Brewmaster", the same way Molluck was called "Molluck The Glukkon", like two very important big men. Thanks for this video, pupbenny. It's still a pleasure to learn more important things about the lore of Oddworld. Greetings from France. :)
In some ways, Molluck, Morguer and Aslik all share a position with the Brewmaster. Each of them own and control a corporation that makes a lot of money. But since each of them is reliant on the Soulstorm Brew, the Brewmaster could at any moment hike up the price, like Pupbenny notes, or even refuse to sell the Brew to companies that anger him. So the Brewmaster is very much in control. And all this because the other Glukkons chose to get their slaves/workers addicted to the Brew to get more productivity out of them and be able to torment and torture their employees any way they desire, without fear of repercussions as the slaves wouldn't be able to escape alive and warn anyone about their treatment. So Aslik and Morguer are scared and subservient to Brewmaster because even though they were angry at him and thought that the Brewmaster's brew had failed them, he is also the only hope they have. If it was a flaw in the Brew that made their employees/slaves rebel, the Brewmaster is the only one who can fix this. And when the Brewmaster accuses Molluck of being behind all of this, they are quick to believe it, because it seems logical to them. It is the type of treachery they expect from Glukkons. It means that Mudokons are not the brains of the operation (as Glukkons refuse to believe that Mudokon could be this smart) and it also means that the Brew would still work, much like they had relied on it to work for years by now. This theory is obviously wrong, but it is a theory based entirely on bigoted Glukkon beliefs, so it is easier for them to believe it, rather than admit that Mudokon could pose a threat to Glukkons.
Greetings and thank you very much, I appreciate you saying all this! :) And yeah, I wonder too if The Brewmaster was high than Molluck. He definitely seems to be in a more powerful position arguably, but, as you pointed out, Molluck is Lady Margaret's favourite son. It's difficult to tell exactly which one would be more highly regarded, unlike in Exoddus where Molluck was the big boss of The Brewmaster (and the other Glukkons). It's definitely interesting to consider what place each of the Glukkons come in in the hierarchy.
They walk on their hands, so I think Brewmaster sits down, disrobes, and then reads and shuffles notes around. It's probably a very embarassing moment to be caught like that seeing as how they have to get naked for it
The Gluken's vestigial "feet" are thier arms. The location of the arms are strange, but if you notice, all Glukens have two vertical cuts in thier coat, looking like pockets, that allow them to extend thier little arms out from inside. What I don't understand is why they button thier coat so far down that they severely restrict thier legs. Perhaps it is a status thing, to show they have no need to run around from place to place. People come to them, they prefer sedentary work. High fashion aside, there is nothing physically stopping a Glukkon from running or even wielding a small weapon if they had need to do so. Just something interesting to note since people seem to think thier coats mirror thier actual physiology.
My theory is that the fact that brew is so effective and causes anyone who doesn't drink it for 48 hours to die is due to the fact that the Brewmaster used some kind of black magic or made a deal with some entity in the world. occult, also because in the era of alchemy after the schism it is said that the Glukkons tried black magic to gain fame. Probably the ones written on the brewmaster's blackboard are symbols in an ancient Oddworld language that he may have studied over time, as he has so many books and is so cultured.
We need Soulstorm Mourger next. My favourite, he seems almost the most reasonable Glukkon. Your previous vid on him really didn't age well compared to reality of the actual game. I really like how different he is from other Gluks by not being an arrogant unpleasant snob. He doesn't get irritated by getting called, he doesn't dismiss the idea of revolts, he actually listens to his employees, ponders, calculates, much different from the initial "Baron" vid. It's like Soulstorm doesn't do justice to his personality, it contradicts his first impression, for someone so calculated and methodical he'd wanna keep his security sligs well paid and loyal when he hears and seriously considers the idea of revolt, most especially after his operation got blown. He clearly is someone with enough foresight to assume his sligs might turn on him so he should've taken precautions to prevent the chauffer's trick. Alas it was not to be, perhaps his calculated and intelligent stance was there only for as long as he's not under pressure.
This comment really made me appreciate the new characters that Soulstorm introduced, Honestly I took the reason on why Mourger didn’t pay his Sligs is mostly because of what Sligs are in the greater scope of the industrialists, they’re pretty much only one level higher than the Mudokons on the social scale, being just as much slaves as the Muds, and as such Glukkon’s don’t think that a Slig revolution would happen mostly because the Gluks think they’re too stupid to realize they’re getting stiffed, so even though Mourger is much more of an rational Glukkon he still is a Glukkon at the end of the day.
I'd say he was probably my favourite too, I think it's a shame that his unique personality, or opinions, etc, weren't taken advantage more in the story of Soulstorm and instead he ended up being ultimately irrelevant to the story, arguably. Which is a shame as there was so much potential with him. And yeah my previous video on him definitely aged pretty poorly lol. Will eventually get around to doing a similar update video on him too, I'm sure.
About what you said about how Brewmaster turns a page. If you look closely at the suits the Glukkens are wearing, you can see a sort of seam on both sides of it. I belive these are slits made spesificly to stick out their little legs to be used as makeshift arms. I could be sevearly wrong about this, but I feel it makes sense. It would also explain how Aslik has so many cans on his sidetable during his nap
If they ever make a sequel to soulstorm the general of the barracks from Exodus needs to show up he will be the Queen's Royal army protecting her at all costs, A revolution is about to begin for ape and his people!
@@pupbenny I imagine him to be more menacing and diabolical even his own troops fear him and other glukkons too fear him as well, there's a reason why the queen put him in charge of her royal army he will not tolerate an revolution he would sacrifice as many troops as he can to stop this uprising to the point where his own troops commit suicide just to get out of it imagine him as Adolf Hitler, Kim Jong Lee, and Vladimir Putin all at the same time that's how evil he is, oh and Osama as well!
I love the glukkon art deco style with everything andhow they kind of make everything look like them, they really did a good job with all the characters redesign especially mullocks sing glowing good eye
intriguing character comparison, inspiration analysis and historial facts! They really detailed his lucrative personality to twisted levels! It's like those unpleasant lay sadistic tutors but at the economic level of gastronomic production!
I'm glad you made a video about my favorite glukkon and generally my favorite character from the whole oddworld. I also noticed that the brewmaster is trying to oppress the Mudkon race, just like Himmler the Jews or the Slavs, not to mention that Himmler was Hitler's right hand man, so I think the brewmaster is Lady Margaret's right hand man. And believed the brewmaster is very bigger villain.
The brew master's accent sounds like a mix between German and French. Like the drawing out of words like French, but the breathyness of German. I can't exactly describe how it's German, but it's definitely there
I'm a bit sad I don't like this shift in the Brewmaster's design/characterization as much as maybe I should? Idk, I kinda liked the subtle implication in the original he was like Lulu in that he was almost a Glukkon out of place, someone outside the norm of his society, who nevertheless rose to a prominent position due to his unique fascination and competency with putting effort into his product. He's still a great antagonist for Abe to have to overcome given the change in story, but I kind of miss the more eccentric and self motivated interpretation he had originally. Part of that is just in general not being a fan of the more self serious direction Oddworld has taken, I feel like in the quest for a more 'cinematic' version of the story something that was uniquely Oddworld was lost despite it's qualities and The Brewmaster is an example of that.
Yeah I know what you mean, the original was definitely a really unique character and, in general, a unusual enemy with a very distinct personality that's unlike perhaps any character in anything else, considering his role within society. I feel like they went with a very direct, standard, evil scientist type approach with the new one, that's very different and perhaps more stereotypical in the story-sense.
ngl at first, I thought I was going to not like this version of the Brewmaster but as you spoke, I realized this is the best version of this character it's a shame he died so soon (or did he ???)
I really adore your videos and knowledge about the series. I also really love your character analysis videos and loved the stranger's wrath outlaw ones.
Ah thank you very much! :) I hope to do more of the outlaw videos eventually. I already have one recorded so that might be coming out soon, but I'm not certain yet, but I have plans to do even more. :)
hopefully in the future they will show us scenes of glukkons eating, reading or doing other manual activities! In fact I imagine that their shoe soles are retractable that way they stick their fingers out or even use their tongue & teeth or just tell them to have someone do the work for them XD
One thing that I can imagine: glukkons can have something like a backpack with thin mechanical limbs, to do the easiest activity, like reading or writing.
To me this version of the Brewmaster looks like Leopold Strauss from Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s probably mostly the glasses but Strauss was the first person I thought of when I saw this Brewmaster.
I noticed that the blackboard the Brewmaster was studying showed what looked like a spell circle of some kind. Perhaps the Glukkons retained some of their shamanistic beliefs.
At first I thought the symbols on the board were alchemical, which they might be, but they very well might be occult, since if I remember right, the brew in Exodus was making Mudokins sick because it was made from the ancestral remains of ancient Mudokins. So if nothing else you might be studying occult stuff to see if he can make the brew better, maybe by completely infusing their souls into it. Also as far as the accent, I think they were going for that classic crazy scientist voice, with a bit of a German accent added in. A few examples I can think of being the Professor from Futurama, and the Doctor from Superjail.
That's a really good point! Could be alchemy though, like you said. I should read up about alchemy as it hadn't occurred to me that it might be that. But I really like your theory about infusing their souls.... that would certainly be quite occult. And good point about the accent! I see what you're saying about it basically being the 'crazy scientist' type voice, it definitely makes a lot of sense.
although his accent sounded french i think he was ment to be german, he clearly is something like a nazi "scientist". and the fact that he is the main villain or endboss now is crazy
Noting the whole interests in the occult. I believe Mulok is the only Gluckon that believes that quarma is a thing. Probably after being humbled by Abe he may have considered he doesn't have all the answers. He even makes the correct assumption that there something is going on with the brew after I leaves the factory and it has to do with Abe Mulok is wiser after the first game.
Before playing the game, going by what I heard and read, I was still of the opinion that I preferred the original Brewmaster, but after playing the game myself I've come to the conclusion that I can't put either one as second to the other. They are two different archetypes, and I think they both work spectacularly in their respective role.
Yeah they're both very different characters, with different roles in the game, I'd say! But they're both great and effective in their own way I think. Very distinct from eachother, effectively to the point of the new one being a new character.
I know this isnt the exact point of the brewmasters giant tooth, but what if its the result of him sometimes using his teeth to get task done or operate some thing. Like when you cant pry two lego peices apart and you lost the brick remover and your nails arnte long enough, sometimes you gotta work with what you have to get things done.
Late to the party, but the occult symbol on the brewmaster's board and the "induced loyalty" you mentioned got me thinking, what if whatever biology (?) that allows mudokans to perform their magical abilities, like possesion, is what the brewmaster is manipulating to create the "induced loyalty" in the first place, like how viruses hijack the dna of a cell to produce more of themselves, soulstorm brew could alters whatever allows mudokans to induce possession and essentially do that to themselves, thus becoming more suggestible/loyal. As for what kind of accent the brewmaster has, I think that in both his original appearance and Soulstorm they were going for an austrian/german accent. The original played it up to the point where it was comical and becomes dissimilar to an actual austrian accent, while the Soulstorm iteration downplays it and keeps it more grounded to fit the more serious tone of the game. The reason for this being that germany is famous for beer, and the use of the massive metal stills used to make beer fits the Glukkons industrial aesthetic more than French wine barrels imo.
Hello thank you very much mandroid! :) I'm glad you enjoy it, it's really such an amazing universe, I love how it can be twisted but funny at the same time! :)
7:30: Okay, that's pretty accurate, but if you actually don't know about mysticism you may not know that a popular form of psuedoscience within the occult is alchemy, which is the precursor to chemistry. That's what's called a 'seal' or 'sigil' which is a common pictographic representation in the occult. Those symbols in the seals are commonly planetary or chemical signs... by which I mean the signs of the planets and metals are the same symbol, and invoke their alleged mystic properties; the system is closely tied to astrology. P.S: That symbol with the six pointed star is called a hexagram. In alchemy, the two triangles represent the reconciliation of the opposites of fire and water.
Soulstorm seriously has some of the absolute best CG animation I have ever seen, and while I think that Lorn Lanning is overall a bit of a hypocritical hack, his skills in character design, animation, and world building are admittedly unmatched and I would love to see him make more content along these lines.
@@wonkygaming3151 The short of it is: the guy is vehemently anti-union and anti-worker's rights despite making a series about industrial era capitalism at its worst. There's a few other things beyond that that I can't immediately think of.
Concerning the chalkboard- the main design is evocative of something occult or alchemical. however, there is another design in the top left- a ring of N conected with single or double lines, partially erased. that one is a chemical formula- the N being nitrogen (presuming their annotations are the same as ours) bound to other atoms via single bonds (around which rotation within the molecule is in principle possible) or double bounds (which are rigid). I am no chemist but I believe one of the compound in chocolate as well as caffeine have similar structures in the real world. would have to look up the design in the cutscenes as well as the actual chemical formula to be sure though so don‘t quote me on that
I think the accent of the brewmaster is that of a mixed Russian dialect. I get this because the Russian Empire used Vodka as a way to keep the peasant population in control much like how The Gluckons used the brew to control the Mudokuns
Wish we've gotten a bigger part with 'im, but he was great! Molluck is bein' groomed to be the big bad of the whole Quintology (so far) but, as you said, the overarchin' villain of Soulstorm is the Brewmaster! I wonder if 'is actions will affect future games, or at least mentions. And I had in mind 'is board had occult symbols 'cause of the Gluck's arcane past, maybe The Brewmaster just pushed it beyond what is normal for a Gluck (even in secret)
His brew falled to keep them in line forever but only because a cure for it was found by hus victims. So it was still working the way it was meant to alright but he never considered a cure for it was found even after abe got in his factory. Good thing to or he might have used his brain against abe, but he just could not believe he had been countered by a mudukon.
I'm honestly not a huge fan of the Glukkons from Soulstorm, mainly because they had virtually no impact on the story. In Exoddus Abe comes into direct contact with all of the main Glukkons, and even the Brewmaster, who is a minor character, confronts Abe in the bad ending. However in Soulstorm Abe never comes into contact with any of the Glukkons (barring Molluck's blimp). If you got rid of all of the Glukkon cutscenes (except the expository brew video), the story would remain the same. Like you said, they all die in both endings. I really wish the Glukkons in Soulstorm had a more direct impact on Abe's journey and he had to confront them in some way, or even confront them as he goes to each place. That being said, thank you for making this video! Your insights on the Brewmaster were very interesting.
Thank you for watching and yeah I completely agree! I've always said, there was no point to Aslik and Morguer, at least, being the game, you could literally take them out and it would be basically completely unchanged, but you bring up a really good point actually. I hadn't thought about what if you took out every scene with the Glukkons and you're right, it'd basically be the same too. I felt it was a shame as they revealed the looks of the Glukkons really early on in development, so for the game to finally come out and them to basically have little to no impact is a shame, story-wise.
The biggest mistake the Brewmaster does, is he focuses on his formula and does not consider the possibility that a Mudokon could have invented the cure. This is likely his arrogance, the only thing he can consider is that his formula might not work on Mudokon rather than a Mudokon who could have beaten him in his own speciality. This is probably also why tainting the Brew works. None of the survivors at the Brewery consider that the recipe could have been altered or that a Mudokon could succeed in sabotaging the machine and thus the non-functional Brew is getting delivered to the "workers" after the good ending.
Another thing I noticed is that Brewmaster's concept in Soulstorm has preacher-like clothes, it may be just me but that could be another connection to occultism
Considering how his blackboard is covered in seemingly occoult symbols, how the brew is made with mudokon bones and how glukkons are apparently supposed to actually be really into occultism ... it wouldn't surprise me if the brewmaster's input into the brew was less scientific and more ritualistic. With Oddworld narrative going really hard on the spiritualism in Soulstorm it would honestly be very on brand - the chosen mudokon destined to free his people vs the the brewmaster - the great glukkon shaman.
I don’t understand why the old oddworld glukkens where villains . Shore they enslaved the modokens . But it was less of a slave thing because both party’s got something in return . Modokens got homes jobs food water . The glukkens get workers friends and if time get hard food . If it gets to that part . Maybe the old glukkons did not hate the modokons but sited see them as equal beings . And they wanted to give them a equal places in the world
Yeah, they had an Age of Alchemy that basically propelled them to the industrious civilization that they are now, if I recall correctly. I wanna do a whole video about that and really get in-depth on it cause it's quite an interesting backstory.
I'd like to think that SoulStorm's Brewmaster is one of the few Gluks who found progress by rediscovering their ancient roots. In the Brewmaster's case, the alchemy which his people once practiced. And the SoulStorm brew is a combination of science and alchemy.
One thing to say that they said within 24 hours the withdrawls will kick in which would mean that if they take enough they can even get away. Also there are theories about why Abe did not die from the brew many believe it is because he got a huge amount of it stashed but I believe that even if he had it before it is said that he died in the previous game and was bringen back to life by big face which could have technicaly cured him I mean the brew was ment to kill them if they ran away and I think it took abe at least a day or two before he got back to the farm to destroy it.
9:30 Another odd design with Glukkons is that their lower teeth are more visible, while humans tend to expose their upper teeth more. 15:20 I think it's still a French accent. Reminds me of the Mole from Atlantis.
So I am well aware this video is over a year old, but there is a reason given in game why the Gluckons rarely give the thought that the brew isn't working, or that a cure was created, and instead chose to blame Mullock. In the opening cutscene with Big Face and Abe, it lasts only 5 seconds, but Big Face curses the Gulockons and specifically Mullock. Cursing them to be "misdirected", hence I think this curse is what prevents the Gluckons from believing Abe exists, and that the brew doesn't work, and instead blaming Mullock. The reason I think this also has to do with the Brew itself and the Bad ending. The bad ending, where the train blows up the brewery entirely, is due to the fact that without the brew, all the Mudockins will perish, because the brew is no longer available. If Mullock was TRUELY using Mudockin slaves to blow up the brewery, then all the Mudockins employed by him will die, so him using them as an army to overthrow the cartel by attacking the brewery makes no sense, because his army would be dead shortly after. Hence it wouldn't make sense, but the other Gluckons under the spell fully would happily go along with that train of thought.
i feel like soulstorm may be good, but only when seperate from the original oddworld trilogy, the storytelling may be great but it's kinda weird to go from cartoony goofball saving everyone to seemingly grizzled war veteran struggling to stay positive i don't think soulstorm is the exoddus that oddworld inhabitants originally wanted to make
I mean, he wasn't that off about it being Molluck's fault. If Molluck hadnt tried to make Mudokon Pops, none of this wouldve happened. So he was right in a way, but for the wrong reason.
Thank you! :)
@@pupbenny lol
Everything in Oddworld looks so weird and gross, but so fascinating as a result. It's ugly in a beautiful way, and the Glukkons are no exception.
These games were art
Yeah the original games had really amazing animations, I remember being a child and knowing Oddworld as 'the game that had really realistic graphics (in the cutscenes)' back when pretty much no other games that I knew of did. The quality was just amazing, and now with Oddworld: Soulstorm they really took it up to another level. Apparently they put a lot of effort into the cinematics to have film-like quality as a kind of investment for the potential of doing a series, or something like that.
They look like nemoidians
It's so amazing, to me, that a character can give me such chills, and then laughs as they start to walk
(along with the tears as well, so that's at least the 'alchemy salt' sorted...)
Ah, the badge even mentioned Alchemy.
@@Phyrior Ah very true! I should've looked more into Alchemy, because that definitely makes more sense in the context.
Those symbols on the chalkboard can also refer in the Brewmaster interest in Alchemy, wich in itself can be connected to occult.
indeed, to make a poisonous drink that kills you by not taking it after a few hours or days, no simple science could come up with that
Interesting…
Ahh, I didn't know this thank you for this information! I need to look more into Alchemy, I didn't know it was connected to the occult.
@@pupbenny this game is all about occult and the brew refers to adrenochrome, its made from bones and adrenaline glands & bone marrow are primary sources of harvesting adrenochrome.
Isn't that the same substance that is brought up by Qanon? @squarecrusher
I have noticed this glad to know why now.
Bayer?🤔
@@Bobert-Rob New game about rts industrialist/ Land Muggerz civil war?
Yeah, he really made the only logical decision to him.
Perhaps the 'occult symbols' on his blackboard are actually ancient mudokon symbols. The brewmaster is 'researching' them to better understand the mudokons in order to make his brew more effictive.
Capturing the mudokons by ensnaring their minds hearts and even.....
Souls.
Yeah, that's a good theory! It'd be interesting to find out if they have specific meanings or origins.
Their very bones and tears are the secret ingredients after all.
@@Asko83 It’s more that they have so little information to work with.
Yeah that makes sense. It does seem like some really weird, unrealistic, magic stuff.
Great video about Brewmaster from Soulstorm. He's a great villain character in the Oddworld series
Thank you very much Reddest, yeah he's a really interesting character! :)
Will eventually get around to doing a similar update video on him too, I'm sure.

i Love the glukkons desine.... the fact that from they walk on there hands and its mostly empty air from the waste down under those suites.

I agree that makes sense
Yeah that's very true, you make some really good comparisons! He does seem like a really important figure to how their society works.
The brew master's accent sounds like a mix between German and French. Like the drawing out of words like French, but the breathyness of German. I can't exactly describe how it's German, but it's definitely there
That's a really good analysis of it, it does seem quite hard to pin down exactly.
Dammit... Got me wanting to play the whole series. Good video .
Ha thank you very much! :)
I think glukkons sometimes use their legs as hands. Notice the vertical pocket-like slits on some of their suits in Soulstorm.

Listening to the Brewmaster’s voice, I kind of feel that it’s a sort of fusion of a German and French accent.
Definitely Morguer was my favourite Gluckon design, and had the most intriguing allure in his character. I wish he got more of his story flushed out.

Agreed, he's probably the one I found most interesting, I find it ashame he wasn't more involved in the story.
hopefully in the future they will show us scenes of glukkons eating, reading or doing other manual activities! In fact I imagine that their shoe soles are retractable that way they stick their fingers out or even use their tongue & teeth or just tell them to have someone do the work for them XD
I would be really interested in seeing that too. XD
One thing that I can imagine: glukkons can have something like a backpack with thin mechanical limbs, to do the easiest activity, like reading or writing.
@@ГотаБГ thats sounds cool and Will be Asowme if that the case!! 🤩👍 Like that secret Card machine! A trick up the sleeve
Yeah that's very true!
Yeah, it seems that he's learnt from his experiences from the first game. :)
Informative and a fun watch as always.
What I am interested about is the chalk drawing on his board. Maybe it has some connections to Glukkon Alchemy.
Yeah, a lot of people are saying that too so I think you might be right! :)
I like these remakes of you old videos, you just took your videos and upgraded them. Oddworld lore 2.0 .. can't wait to see the next one
Thank you very much! :) Comparing the old characters to the new, now that Soulstorm is released, is a really interesting topic to me. :)
Yeah that's a good point lol! I could imagine him using it as a bottle-opener lol.

I am no chemist but I believe one of the compound in chocolate as well as caffeine have similar structures in the real world. would have to look up the design in the cutscenes as well as the actual chemical formula to be sure though so don‘t quote me on that
The cult symbols are called runes
Do one on Aslik, he's basically the Railroad Tycoon of the series
I think the accent of the brewmaster is that of a mixed Russian dialect. I get this because the Russian Empire used Vodka as a way to keep the peasant population in control much like how The Gluckons used the brew to control the Mudokuns
The new Brew Master reminded me of the Nazi from Raiders of the Lost Ark the guy who had his face melt.
Wish we've gotten a bigger part with 'im, but he was great!
Molluck is bein' groomed to be the big bad of the whole Quintology
(so far) but, as you said, the overarchin' villain of Soulstorm is the Brewmaster!
I wonder if 'is actions will affect future games, or at least mentions.
And I had in mind 'is board had occult symbols 'cause of the Gluck's arcane past, maybe The Brewmaster just pushed it beyond what is normal for a Gluck (even in secret)
been waiting for this video!!!!!!
Fantastic!! I'm glad I must've read your mind!! ;D xD
@@pupbenny guess we need a little more insight on Aslik now XD
I can only describe the new Brewmaster's accent as "generic western-to-central-European evil person" voice
Yeah, glad other people seem to be agreeing with me about the region. I find it hard to know sometimes.
Finally got Oddworld Soulstorm 🙌🏻💪🏻
Fantastic, I hope you enjoy it!! :)
7:30 looks like some Full Metal Alchemist stuff to me.
Yeah. I'm also getting a slight German accent. His tone is also pitched up giving him a more nasal voice.
Id say the brew master has a new york type accent. Definitely sounded that way in the tape.
Very interesting how they potray gluks as having qn interest in oddworlds version of free masonary
The channel I didn't know I needed
Haha, thank you! :)
Another thing I noticed is that Brewmaster's concept in Soulstorm has preacher-like clothes, it may be just me but that could be another connection to occultism
That was my first impression as well, it looked more like a priest's attire.
Mourger i though the bone harvesteing buissenes was treating you well
Considering how his blackboard is covered in seemingly occoult symbols, how the brew is made with mudokon bones and how glukkons are apparently supposed to actually be really into occultism ... it wouldn't surprise me if the brewmaster's input into the brew was less scientific and more ritualistic. With Oddworld narrative going really hard on the spiritualism in Soulstorm it would honestly be very on brand - the chosen mudokon destined to free his people vs the the brewmaster - the great glukkon shaman.
Gluks walk with their long arms and hand shoes so they can turn pages
How abe proves he’s better than the gluks; raises hands and waves or better yet opens a door unassisted 😂😂
I can't put my finger on the accent, but something tells me the Brewmaster's VA was going for 'slimy.'
And they wanted to give them a equal places in the world
Aren't Glukkons known for their alchemy? Like they did some alchemy a long time ago and it resulted in a disaster?
Perhaps they see alchemy as how evolve now as a pseudo-science with not real aplications to a industrial society.
I know this sounds messed up but doesn't the Brewmaster in Oddworld Soulstorm have a few similar character features to Dr. Fauci.
Ha yeah I hadn't thought about that but I think I see what you mean.
They're pretty much the same him and all his wef freaks
This game really is a hidden gem
Laika studios needs to make an animated stop motion oddworld movie along with a Medievil movie too.
Your video is perfect especially in details but l believe the most important part is on 4:21 . That is a history lesson for today's society.
Ah, yeah! I think that's a really important lesson, I'm glad you pointed it out! :) And thank you! :)
Man this is so detailed
I like this channel so much!
Thank you so much, I'm really glad you like it! :)
Same the best done channel on my favorite video gaming subject since I was able to hold a controller. Thanks for the videos pup.
3:31 The term you're looking for is "Psychoactive Properties"
7:00 how does he write on the chalkboard? lol
With his mouth?
i feel like soulstorm may be good, but only when seperate from the original oddworld trilogy, the storytelling may be great but it's kinda weird to go from cartoony goofball saving everyone to seemingly grizzled war veteran struggling to stay positive
i don't think soulstorm is the exoddus that oddworld inhabitants originally wanted to make
Mans Doctor Mendle if he tried making a soda
fun fact his hands are actually what use to walk, his legs are shorter then his arms
I mean, he wasn't that off about it being Molluck's fault. If Molluck hadnt tried to make Mudokon Pops, none of this wouldve happened. So he was right in a way, but for the wrong reason.
Also . I’m rebel glukkons. Like ones that fight agent the others to make a better future for all on oddworld
