    1:47 The Scrabs DO run faster than Abe in Oddysee, however when Abe runs off the edge of the screen he "teleports" one or two grid tiles along as he transitions into the next screen, which is exactly enough to allow Abe to consistently outrun them.
    In Exoddus there is no hidden "gap" between screen transitions so the Scrabs will catch-up to him eventually.

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  2 года назад +17

      Oooh, I see! That makes sense. I never thought about there being differences in screen transitions between the two games! That certainly explains why the Scrabs felt so much quicker in Exoddus to me.

    • @dustingarner4620
      @dustingarner4620 2 года назад +4

      Do they run faster? I assumed they only jumped faster because they'll usually catch up to Abe while he's jumping across gaps. Also that's really interesting about the scene transitions! I never knew that.

    i noticed the AI in Exodus is strange. some scrabs do stop and howl/bark, but others seem to be intentionally programmed to instantly chase you

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  2 года назад +10

      I know there's instances where they modified the AI of individual enemies to facilitate the gameplay better in certain situations so maybe it's the same case here. I suppose they probably went on a case by case basis on how a Scrab should react in particular parts of the game to make it more challenging or easier. That's one possible explanation anyway.

    I was surprised at how much ceremonial honour there is (or seems to be) when the Scrabs fight. Truly graceful creatures that live in a beautiful area!
    Another thing that interested me while I was filming footage for this was how the Scrabs seemed way more aggressive and fast in Abe's Exoddus. I don't know if this is just my perspective but it seemed like the ones in Abe's Oddysee would take their time before attacking and when they ran they seemed to run at the same pace as Abe. In Exoddus they just instantly come running at you as soon as they can and regularly caught up to Abe and killed him.

      Most likely its because of the scrabs of scrabania are a more passive breed (by scrab standards at least) because of the care ,respect and worship they received and now returned the favor defending the final resting place of there care takers, it most likely they hesitate attacking abe think he's one of them for a split second before realizing he's an outsider. The scrabs of necrum wilds are just regular wild scrabs and don't share this hesitation as abe is just food to them and easy food at that

    9:30 it is also worth noting that scrabs having orange bodies with a yellow underbelly could be an adaptation known as "countershading", basically a form of camouflage in which an animal's coloration is darker on the upper side and lighter on the underside of the body. In the scrabs case, it works as a way so prey animal's can't spot the scrab based on the shading over it's body, making the yellow appear somewhere around the same color of its uperside

    • @pupbenny

    Watching this epic video I came up with several things: 1) in my opinion, if we want to find a canonical reason why the scrabs in AE are faster we can say that they are trained by tomb guards so they are more lethal, I think the Mudanchee have managed to train the scrabs not to get attacked from them, but nevertheless there are many gates in the tombs perhaps to prevent the scrabs from escaping and getting into trouble, it seems that the scrabs recapture the warrior and powerful Mudokons and, sensing their power, they allow themselves to be tamed by them 2) I think that scrabs do not attack each other just for fun or to impose their superiority on the opponent, but rather when someone or another scrab invades his territory. 3) Since I don't think scrabs produce eggs, I wonder how breeding works between them, maybe male scrabs just don't attack female scrabs 4) Before watching this video I had never thought about how loyal and honorable scrabs can actually be with each other, I just thought they were aggressive and that's enough, instead, before fighting, they look at each other and roar, like a greeting or a handshake before fighting. 5) (this is more of a fun fact ...) I saw a very old video showing one of the first NnT trailers in which a scrab roared, and if you lowered the tone of voice, the roar of the scrab matched the roar of the lion. I think this video showed me scrabs differently!

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  2 года назад +2

      Thank you very much David, those are really good points! :) I'm glad the video showed scrabs differently, editing and researching it certainly showed them differently to myself so I'm glad that came across. :) I've always found it really interesting the way the Scrabs sounded different from Oddysee and Exoddus to what they sound like in Munch and New N' Tasty. I've always thought that the scrabs in MO/NNT sounded like lions, so it makes a lot of sense to me that it would match that. Maybe I should look more into seeing if there's a reason for that, it'd be interesting to find out.

    Do you think you could do a video on Moolah? I've noticed that it's kind of a strange currency, because in Munch's Oddysee we see that Lulu's total fortune was 3,000,000 Moolah, and that the green suited Glokstar wouldn't bid above 1,500,000. How much Moolah does a Glukkon need to be considered a Glokstar? Is it just the suit? If Mullock had the 'biggest meat processing plant on all of oddworld', how much money did he even have? Less than 3,000,000? How much do the Sligs get paid? We clearly see that they put money in their lockers in Soulstorm, and I wanna know more about the currency they use!

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  2 года назад +4

      Yeah these are really good questions. I actually thought about doing a video years ago trying to estimate how much Moolah is worth in Earth currencies (inspired by a similar video I saw of someone doing the same thing with Star Trek currency) so I definitely would like to at some point do that, and you bring up some really good questions about that too. Surely, I feel like, RuptureFarms, etc, must be making millions. I guess perhaps it would not be considered Molluck's personal wealth and more like the wealth of the Magog Cartel? Not sure, but it's interesting to consider these things.

  • @LazyJesse
    @LazyJesse 2 года назад +6

    I think the scrab speeds are the same between Oddysee and Exoddus but the screen transitions are handled differently between games so that might be the reason they seem different between games.

    Scrabs kind of resemble an organic version of a construction shovel and that got me thinking. Maybe their main pray is underground and the dig it up with their beak mouth. They seem to have a muscular torso and the ability to know which well Abe is coming out of which implies they can detect underground pray. They also don't bite and just sort of bayonet charge targets, maybe they use those pointy beak tipped jaws to peck at the ground like a woodpecker does to dirt. This would also explain how they find water.

    • @pupbenny

      I've been intending to do one about shrykull for a long while, hopefully will get around to it soon. :) It'd be interesting to see what would happen if Paramites and Scrabs ever directly interacted, but apparently they're generally always separated by living in different areas and being awake at different times.

    • @pupbenny

      Yeah and the Paramites too! There's absolutely no need and no gameplay involving it though so I guess they just put it in to avoid an inconsistency with Abe's Exoddus.

    Scrabs actually sound kinda similar to sharks in alotta ways. Very territorial, agile, fast, yet honorable creatures. Hell, the electromagnetic feild they use to get around is similar to a system sharks posses.

    I have a personal theory about Scrabania that in some part of Oddworld’s history, that the area might’ve been underwater once. Because the plateau formations kinda reminds me of those sharp pointy mountains in Madagascar. And if I remember correctly from a documentary I watched before. That those pointy rocks used to be underwater. And deserts in real life also may have been underwater in Earth’s history. The Sahara Desert and the American Plain also used to be underwater as well. So who knows.

      @@shinji1264 That would require environmental factors to arise which would make arms more trouble than they're worth, which sounds just as preposterous to me as it does to you.
      The only idea I can think of is that it found itself in an environment where food was scarce and thus needed to cut down on the biomass it needed to sustain, but even then it would ditch a pair of legs well before it ditched it's arms.

      @@benthomason3307 Hmm probably kinda like how T rexes evolved to have very tiny arms, or like how whales lost their legs, either way it's just a game and I doubt the creators put that much thought into it ofc, but I see where you're coming from a scientific point of view!

    • @benthomason3307
      @benthomason3307 2 года назад +1

      @@shinji1264 We actually still don't know why T Rexes had tiny arms, but we do know that they definitely used them for _something,_ since they're abnormally strong for arms of that size.

      Good point lol. It does seem there's quite a lot of aspects of Oddworld that go against logic, such as Lorne saying the planet was 8 or 10 times bigger than Earth until people pointed out how that just wouldn't work logically.
