    When I go over the PC builder and gaming youtube content, it never ceases to amaze me the number of channels that attempt to normalise high end rigs as to what is most 'common' and usual. The reality is that only a small number of people can afford rigs like that. It is good to see content like yours that is more realistic as to the choices consumers must make and particularly given this global economic downturn.

Both options are above $1200 MSRP regularly. I secured an Msi Suprim X 3090ti for $1200 on Amazon this morning (over $2200 card), so price drops are there on the very high end at least. I have not seen big drops on mid high aib’s, I initially was going for an Msi Suprim 3070ti, but it’s still going for above MSRP. NVIDIA FEs are not super good on prices though compared to aib’s as far as I’ve seen.

    I did my build in July (i just couldn't wait any longer because my previous PC broke) I got the 12600k with a 3060ti. The idea was that upgrading the gpu 1, 3, 5 years from now would be infinitely cheaper and easier than upgrading the cpu since I'd likely have to get a new mobo as well. So I over budgeted the cpu and got a gpu that I was confident could handle my gaming needs until 2024 or so. I plan on this pc lasting me at least 7 years and wanted to be sure I had enough cpu power for that duration.
    Doesn't mean I was right, but it was my thought process at the time and so far I'm happy with the results.

    I like the "philosophy" part of this video. I agree with everything. Latest thing that I figured recently was the "future proofing" part. I was doing that, upgrading and in the end i realized instead of building a nice balanced setup. You are giving up the performance, spend more time on it and in the end it costs the same. And it is much more difficult to get rid of the parts that remains after the upgrade, because it is not functioning standalone PC that you can sell to one person or give to somebody in the family.

      I want both. Sadly I'm lost in the shuffle. I'm still using an AM3 Phenom 2 x4 925 and a 1070TI (My Sapphire 4850x2 burnt out) trying to optimize for both is hard. From what I gather the answer is 'slap the strongest INTEL processor and a beastly GPU in' but that lacks nuance and refinement. Plus it would have me spending way too much for not much in gains.

    • @Carrinthe
      @Carrinthe 2 года назад +3

      @@millgiass I went with an R9 5950X and rtx 3080 combo. For gaming it just doesn't matter which modern mid tier and better Intel or AMD cpu you have when you game at higher resolutions, the gpu is your bottleneck most of the time especially on 4K. For productivity work that can utilise all cores more is better. The 12900 and 5950X perform about the same but I much prefer the 5950X because it's much more energy efficient and also you never have to worry if your program runs on a E or P core. Maybe the smart money is on the i7-12700 that's only slightly slower but much cheaper and also much more energy efficient compared to the 12900.

    • @millgiass
      @millgiass 2 года назад +1

      @@Carrinthe Seems so. Seems like both the 12700K and 11900K beat out the 5950X in most tests. Less power consumption is definitely a nice thing, I just absolutely hate how slow rendering videos is. Imagine if the big video editing programs actually let you use the GPU instead of the CPU, or better yet, both at once. You'd probably render faster than playback speed at that point. It would be delightful.

    • @Carrinthe
      @Carrinthe 2 года назад

      @@millgiass The 5950x is definitely slower in single thread applications but when a program can utilise all cores it's certainly on par with the 12900k and faster than the 11900 or 12700. But in most tests the 5950X is handicapped by not enabling PBO and that means it is capped on his base clock of 3.4Ghz. and yes than the 5950X seems a lot slower compared to those other cpu's. Enabling PBO (just as easy as enabeling xmp) with aircooling I get the 5950X all core at 4.3GHz and a Cinebench R23 score north of 29000. Higher scores are possible with better cooling.

    gpu prices haven't been crashing nearly as much lately. Prices have been rather flat for a while. Barely reaching 2020 isn't good enough given the next gen is around the corner. It's still difficult to find a 3060TI at 2020 msrp. 3060ti has been selling out within minutes whenever it goes in stock at 2020 msrp prices. cards are still overpriced imo here in Canada at least for Nvidia.
    Currently I'm on a 5600/3060. upgrading the GPU when the next gen releases seems like the logical best upgrade for performance improvement as even a 5800x3d seems to offer no improvement on a mid tier gpu

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  2 года назад +21

      5600 / RTX 3060 is very good right now. AMD has changed their business strategy back to being the value provider at lower cost. NVIDIA has not changed strategy (even their "OMG everything is on sale now" announcement two days ago is just GPUs that still cost $1000 or more).

      I'm also in Canada and, yes, it's been frustrating. I'm hopeful that the current inflated prices are the last gasp before the imminent flood of used mining cards, and the announcements of next gen. Retailers will simply have to slash prices on 30-series if they want to clear that 'old' stock. It's kinda begun but not really. Good luck!

    I'm kind of surprised that you didn't mention the 12700k as the "cheap" ultimate build CPU, as it's not that much worse than a 12900k, all other things equal. Considering the price difference of the two is about 200-250 USD, that can really free up money for a better performing GPU, even at the 3080 and higher level. Alternatively, as others have mentioned, you can put that money towards getting a larger PSU if you're planning to upgrade to a next-gen 4080/7800XT or better GPU due to what has been reported on those specs right now. Or get better memory or add a little bling to your system.
    That said, there isn't that much an advantage in going for the 12700k versus the 12700f in terms of price to performance. From what I've been able to gather, the 12700k makes memory tuning a little easier since not all B660 motherboards will support memory tuning beyond XMP with locked CPUs, and, despite it being the unlocked CPU, it seems to have a little bit better power efficiency than the 12700f. Performance-wise though, they seem to be identical at stock settings.
    Only other thing to comment on is your insistence to getting a Z690 even with a 12600k. A good B660 will offer better features than a similarly priced (i.e. "cheap") Z690, so, if you're not planning to OC, a B660 can be a solid motherboard option while still benefiting from those E cores the 12600k has that the 12600 non-k and lower lack. I'd recommend the MSI B660 Bazooka, Mortar, and Tomahawk if you're just looking for performance, though the Asus Rog Strix certainly has aesthetic charm.

    Interesting and thanks for tackling the topic.
    Please include ram in the budget. I know it’s another complication for the point you are making but the ram is still something people still have to navigate. So omitting it here means this video is not the final story.
    EDIT: I have been looking over some of your other videos and I see you really are chopping up the build process into bite sized chunks tackling the very questions people struggle to resolve. The material is sort of the “advertising antidote “ to the narrative of Spend More Money since we can’t figure out the quagmire and more money will hopefully solve the problem.

In other words is is better to go with a cpu with just an amazing gaming score or does the added complexity of inputs lead to applications that end up processing more like video production, etc

      I am no expert but when doing VR you are essentially rendering the game twice in each lens. That means more graphical processing. Once you get into the 6GB/8GB VRAM GPUs you will notice VR is marketed on the packaging. I would say the most important thing is the GPU or VR, and second the headset you're using itself. I have a Oculus Rift S and it caps out at 80hz refresh rate and I think each lens can only get up to 720p. Upgrading my GPU will absolutely help but there is only so much it can do to fix my problem. I haven't played a bunch of VR titles or know if there's a specific game that is CPU heavy but if there is I am sure it will be that one outlier.
      TL;DR - Make sure you got at least a good midrange combo like in this video, and sink your budget into your GPU and Headset.

Despite this being *after* the launch of Zen3...and my friend literally just wanted to build a PC for gaming. They also went with a 3070 Ti, so it's kinda funny to think about how a sub-$200 CPU can better run that GPU than the $400+ he paid at the time for the previous gen Ryzen 9. Great analysis ! Do you think a 5600x will be enough with the new RX 7000 series or should I upgrade? I play at 1080p (maybe 1440p by the time these new GPUs come out) but always aim for high fps above all else.

    • @tbonedude12
      @tbonedude12 2 года назад

      A 5600x is already too good for 1080p gaming and so is your graphics card most likely. If you get a 7000 series gpu before you get a new monitor you just completely wasted your money. You will see literally nothing different on your monitor with the capabilities of these cards, probably even the one you have now is heavily limited. If you have a 5600x rig you should already be on a 2k monitor with 120+hz period if you dont have that go ahead and buy the 7900xt it wont do shit. I think some people should just stick to what they know, as youre obviously just parroting pro gamers with this "high fps above all else" shit when no one else thinks that way.

    By the way, what do you think of Ryzen 5 5500? It was written off by most reviewers, and at the MSRP, there is no wonder why.
    But at the current pricing, and with cheap B450 boards, it can compete with i3-12100F by being cheaper in total and similar in performance.
    Of course, like 10105F, it would be bad to pair it with RX 6500 XT or RX 6400 for the same PCIe 3.0 reason :)

    • @stix_0910
      @stix_0910 2 года назад

      Because at this pricepoint it's competing with a ryzen 5 5600, and they are both very cheap to buy. for minor dif in price the 5600 is a much better buy at this pricepoint unless your budget is really stretched. The much larger L3 cache on the 5600 and higher boost clock makes it worth it.

    • @vlastimil-furst
      @vlastimil-furst 2 года назад

      @@stix_0910 At the point I was writing it, the price difference was quite big where I live, it was about 40 % less. Great video, as always Jason. 👍 As someone who is a bit rusty when it comes to building (my last build was over 6 years ago), I feel like the CPU is the hardest part to know what to get, for me personally at least. I know that I wanna be able to play graphically demanding AAA single player games at 1440p/60+fps, and I'm probably going to do a little bit of creativity (blender, photo/video/audio editing and so on) too. I was thinking of something in line with the 5800X. But maybe I don't need it if I'm not going to do creativity tasks at a pro level? The GPU I'm aiming for is the RTX3080 10GB (12GB). Would I be fine with a 5700X or even a 5600X, or is a more powerful CPU (like the 5800X) recommended?

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  2 года назад +8

      Go for the 12GB 3080 model if you can, it is actually faster in addition to having 2 more GB of VRAM (not as important but nice). 5700X would be fine especially for 1440p or 4K gaming. 12600K is a better overall CPU (but cost is more) if doing a lot of long duration multithreaded work, though the 5700X is no slouch at these tasks either. Honestly if you mostly do easier photoshop stuff, 5600X would be fine and for $175 right now it's a great deal.

      @@PCBuilderChannel Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, basically I just wanna get the most "bang for my bucks" and not over spend in the wrong places. I'm not building it right now, since GPU prices are still way above MSRP here in Sweden. The cheapest (available) 3080 (10GB) models are stuck at $1000-$1100 right now, hopefully NVidia's recent price reduction in the US will make our prices go down soon too.

      You don't need an upgrade. The 5800X is more than capable to handle 1440p @ 240Hz since at that resolution the CPU is less important since the GPU is doing most of the work. With your 3090 you're all set, you don't really need to upgrade.

Here in Australia you there's a $500 AUD difference between the cheapest options of both, with 9 models of 6900XT cheaper than the cheapest 3080 12GB, meaning that, at least at the high end, AMD offers better value here.

    Well, I began buying parts during the late 2020 and early 2021 when most things were too highly priced. I ended buying a TUF X570 plus motherboard, a Ryzen 5900X which at the time cost around €600, 32GB of RAM etc. The only thing I did not get at the time was a GPU because I was not prepared to stay up nights to check when these came in stock and definitely was not prepared to spend 3x or 4x for a GPU to those scalpels. I feel sad for those who did fall into that trap. This week I've ordered a Radeon RX 6800XT at €675 so my PC will finally be complete and I can remove the 1050 I had in it.
    I was not after top end anything but wanted to build a PC which could last me for at least 7/8 years for the work I do but still wanted "almost" the highest within a budget.

    I just built a great computer for less than any PC building site. For under $2000, I got an i7 13700k, with 32 GBs of G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 5600mhz DDR5 RAM, an RTX 3080 Ti Aorus Master GPU, ASUS Prime Z690-P motherboard, a Corsair RM850x power supply, a SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB M.2, and a Noctua NH-U12A chromax.Black CPU cooler, and had it put into a be quiet! Pure Base 500DX with an extra 140mm fan added to the case (total 4x 140mm "be quiet! Silent Wings 3" fans). Grand total, including cost to have it put together for me: $1975. Great year too.
    Caveats: I got the CPU, the power supply, and the motherboard as "open box" sale items (saved about $120). And the GPU was "used" in "like new" condition for $700 (saved $700) with all packaging in pristine condition and under warranty. And I got the CPU cooler on a Black Friday deal for 35% off regular price and saved about $40.

      full disclosure, it cost about $45 more to have it built than I expected because they needed to flash the bios in order to install the i7 13700k. Trouble was, there is no flash button on that motherboard, so they had to install an 12700k first, and then flash and update the bios. Cost an extra half an hour. But I thought I could squeeze in an extra 1 TB SSD SATA and keep it under $2000, but turned out I went over by about $40. So I didn't count that.

    Upgrade to what will make you not frustrated with your system, remember it's a constant treadmill of hardware development, so it's always cheaper to be slightly behind the bleeding edge, plus all the issues have normally been ironed out by then.

    1:58 well it's not like that anymore. I have a RTX 3080 and i9 9900k with 2x16 GB DDR4 3200Mhz Rams and I get around 55-70 fps in Reserve map of Tarkov but another man with a RTX 2070 and i9 12900k with 2x16 GB DDR5 5466Mhz can get 90-110 fps in the same map. Some games are CPU bound but usually games are GPU bound, not Tarkov tho, it's extremely CPU bound. And I play mostly CPU bound games such as Tarkov, League of Legends, Valorant, etc.
    The weird thing is, if I lower all my Tarkov settings to the lowest + playing with 1080p, I'll get worse performance in-game. BUT, if I use DLDSR to upscale my monitor's 1080p resolution to artificial 3k(2880x1620 in 16:9) + maximize all my settings to around high/ultra + using DLSS, I'll get much better performance. The difference is really insane, not I only get more fps but my game also looks phenomenal.
    Nowadays, a GPU like 2070 is really enough for every game and upgrading/buying a high performance CPU + RAM is more important for games imo. Even I have 3080, i9 9900k and 32gb ddr4 3200mhz rams, I can't get insane amount of fps in every game.
    Edit: I must mention that I know all the basics for PC optimizing using Nvidia Control Panel, Process Lasso, ISLC etc. I surely know how to optimize a game so don't say to me that I couldn't optimize Tarkov and that another man has optimized Tarkov perfectly, nope, I know how to optimize games as well.
