One genius complimenting another!!!
So very true … 🎸👨🏼⚕️🫶✌️♾️
Brian and Tony respectively used a homemade guitar and compensated for cut off fingertips. That needed creativity for sure.
Brian may was very far from genius!! Should not just throw that word around
@dondamon4669 If you don't accept he's a genius guitarist / songwriter, then how about the fact he has a doctorate in Astrophysics!!! Does that qualify him for that title?
Brian isn't a genius he's just a satanic freemason and a limited guitar player especially compared to van halen.
Talent recognizes talent
I love how Brian is basically admitting that Eddie was better than he was
@@fredwerza3478 You wanted to say more skilled.
@@AlbertoJorgeSoares yeah basically --- Brian came up with a lot of melodic stuff but couldn't match the technical wizardry of Edward
@@fredwerza3478 Had more technical skills, speed - sure. But I wouldn't say that because of that Yngwie is "better" than (for example) Mark Knopfler. Dire Straits made so many unbelievable music, without the "technical wizardry".
It's just different.
@@michacieslak2346 Knopfler was "OK" but King Edward was a total pioneer and innovator of rock --- his influence spans many generations
The pause after he said “ VH were opening for Black Sabbath “ said it all 😂🎸😂
My first concert was Sabbath with Van Halen opening. It was a magical mind blowing night.
It was a small general admission venue and my buddy and I got very close to the stage. Saw VH headlining tours thereafter and Eddie always killed it.
@@jimgodofbiscuits In 79' they hit the Arizona Fair at Phoenix Memorial Coliseum and George Thorogood & Destroyers opened, VH and Alice Cooper for $3 !!! Also general admission !!! We wandered all over it was amazing!!!
@@jimgodofbiscuitsfuck am I jealous
What exactly do you think it said 🤔?
@@b.g.5869 I grew up in the country and the idea of going to a concert didn't come up for me until the summer of '78 when I was 17. I know now city kids were seeing shows at like 14, about the age older kids first introduced me to hard rock. Became a Black Sabbath fan and when we went to this concert I'd never even heard VH yet. Their first album came out in Feb I think but the buzz hadn't reached me. Soon as they started playing though it was obvious even to a 17 year old this was something special. Everyone talked about how VH blew Sabbath off the stage but I loved the Sabbath set too. Ozzy was MIA or totally out of it that tour from what I heard but he was on that night. It was their last tour together (Never Say Die) in the original run.
I love how badass this man is but yet has no problem at all shining the spotlight on other players and showing them respect. Not for nothing but my father taught me that it shows class and intelligence if a man who is great can also humble himself enough to give and show respect when respect is due and deserved.
HE'S A DOCTOR AND A KNIGHT AND A ROCKSTAR 😂
Of course that's simply correct. The not easy part is the emotional security part of it for some. But yes, give the credit where it's truly due. In my opinion though unfortunately, the terms "Genius, Love, and Friend" because of Media's attempts to place emphasis have been WAY overused for decades to the point of whoring. Again, giving credit where it's truly due, particularly when it's not an "Art" you find appealing, &or you don't care for the individual/entity producing it, yet recognizing it for what it is despite is rarest, I think.
Jimi and Eddie changed the guitar sound forever
People always say this but I don't think it's true.
I'm not saying they weren't great players that sounded very unique when they first appeared on the scene but as far as leaving a permanent imprint on how people play guitar, I just don't see it, largely because their respective styles were associated with a type of rock music that didn't last very long.
The proto metal sort of blues tinged hard rock Hendrix played was limited to a few year span in the late 60s. A lot of people say everyone copied Jimi but can't seem to name some examples when asked.
Similarly, Van Halen's finger tapping and classical music influence was very influential and often copied in the 80s, but most of the bands copying him sucked and Van Halen got soft and commercial pretty early in their career so unless you went to see Van Halen live you really didn't hear any of the stuff he did that was innovative.
Moreover, with the exception of a few very old legacy bands still touring guitar oriented hard rock is essentially dead as a genre, so while I would definitely agree they were both great and innovative I don't think we can say they ultimately had a lasting impact.
Jimi had a few years in the late 60s and Eddie Van Halen has a few years in the late 70s and early 80s.
Sir Brian May --brilliant guitarist --so humble to others --the master complimenting others !
Brian may is my favorite guitar player from all the rock players, but, Eddie Van Halen was from another planet admittedly. May he RIP.
Talented and also has a PhD. in Astrophysics. What a gentleman. ❤
Now that’s a gentleman.
Brian May is such a sweet gentleman.
I love a humble genius beautiful😊

Love the telescope on the background.. so cool that one of my guitar hero’s is also into one of my fave sciences .. Astronomy, physics and astrophysics

Huh? I don't understand what you mean.
I saw Van Halen open for Sabbath in Memphis, VH blew them completely away. Everyone was enthralled with Eddie and rightly so.
Saw Van Halen open for Sabbath in Seattle Center Coliseum in 1978 what a great show that was. Went out and got VH'S first album the next day . That album played through the night at our hi school keggers.
I lived in Pasadena California where we were at kegger parties with Van Halen as the band. I saw him also in 78 that year at the Pasadena Civic as they were about to leave on tour. My last time was the US Festival in 83 and Eddie was as amazing as every.
Love Brian May ❤
Brian May is a legend....very humble
He’s got a bit of ego. It’s totally deserved, and he’s not an a-hole about it, but I wouldn’t exactly say humility is one of his defining traits.

EVH was rocking and cool and flash, but when I listen to Brian May I feel as I do listening to a master violinist playing a classic piece: tasteful, musical, infinitely precise, and perfectly joyful.
Listen to Cathedral Vh.. guy comes from pure classical influence and on piano no less musics like art there's no better but I Def see.your point and love May as well
I find VHs music soulless.
@@nicholasprotz4297Other than questioning your intelligence and musical ear, I don't know how to open your ears at this point. lol
You're really missing out though. Especially if your only reference to EVH is what you have heard on the radio. That stuff just paid the bills.
Listen to every album from their debut record in 1977, VH1 to the last album before Gary Cherone made 1 record with them.
Gary is great with Nuno, and a really nice and generous guy to meet, but somehow, his voice didn't work in VH. 🎸
@@1XDroidX1 Heard it all, not my thing, overrated.
@@1XDroidX1 It’s not only what I’ve heard on the radio. VHs music is not melodic enough for me. DLR and SH are not great singers.
Brian May and Tony Iommi are great friends. Can you imagine just sitting in a room having a beer while those two just jam for fun, bounce ideas off of each other, tell crazy rock star stories and laugh it up! Now that would be epic!
From what I understand, Brian May and his dad designed and built his guitar.
I think his dad might have been an actual rocket scientist or something like it.
Brian May has a degree in Astrophysics. I can't recall what his dad did for a living but the two of them literally designed, crafted, and wired the guitar. The full story is online somewhere.
@@joe.oberheim His father was an engineer.
Brian worked on the Messenger project with NASA which photographed Pluto for the first time a few years ago. He is an actual rocket scientist (astrophysicist).
Eddie's groove riffs are beyond mind blowing. His style packs a very distinct and genuine energy.
Zo mooi om de foto's te zien van Brain May geschiedenis 😊😊
Any guitarist will love to see the video of Brian May talking about Nuno Bettencourt and analyzing one of his solos. Nuno grew up idolizing Brian May, so I expect when he saw the video he was over the moon at seeing his hero single him out with respect.
But Brian is such a down-to-earth and decent guy, giving credit where it's due. As another commenter mentioned with regard to Brian's story about Eddie... one genius complimenting another.
What genero8 compliments ❤
I've been playing guitar for 35+ years and one of my favorite things about being a musician is how humble most players are, no matter how good they are.
I myself have developed a lot of skill over a lifetime, and people are very impressed by my playing, but I always feel humbled when I watch someone else play. Sometimes I feel like "there's no way I can play that", right up until the moment you try and succeed to play it and think "oh wow, I did it!".
Learning an instrument is truly a deep and intense experience, and if you do it the right way, it changes your character and your life. 🙏🏼💙🤘🏼
The Fact that he compared him to Jimi. Both, of those Fellers changed the Game and nobody has since!
More than the best rock guitarist ever...EVH had a heart of gold.
No. I love EVH, but do more research.
EVH said a lot of mean things about people --- he said he taught Randy everything he knows --- and called former band members like Mikey, Dave, and Sammy all kinds of names
Sir Brian May is not only an accomplished guitarist, who has outlived his plectrum (ha ha), he is humble to a fault. May God bless his spirit as he continues on his journey for those of us fortunate enough to know of his skills. I would adore hearing him play with his choice of guitarists - Eric Johnson, for one, springs to mind - on an album of INSTRUMENTALS… Hopefully comprised primarily of ballad - type songs, e.g. “we are the champions”…Power Ballads with anthemic overtones/progressions. Come on, mates, you have it in you…😊. 🫶✌️♾️. 🎸👨🏼⚕️
All of Eddie's guitars are going to heaven because he played the hell out of them.
Eddie with a jazz bass, cool!
I remember that tour. I saw them in Seattle. An amazing show! Both bands. Van Halen was at a local station for an interview and q&a with callers. I was a HUGE fan and played their first album a lot!
Anyway, I was able to get thru and ask a question; I asked Eddie "How do you get that sound on Eruption?" His answer: "Come to the show and find out." As I had a ticket, I said "You know it. I already have my ticket."
DJ: Thanks for the question. Next caller...
It wasn't really a conversation, but as a 16yr old, I had talked to Eddie, and that was good enough for me!
RIP Eddie
Come on Sir, YOU are the best! ❤❤
Eddie was better
@@fredwerza3478 Better in some aspects. The thing is, the delivery and the attitude can ultimately settle a dispute in Rock. Those attributes in Eddie were wild and Rock is supposed to be wild.
Love that first pic! Eddie holding Phil Chen’s bass! Must have been during the Starfleet sessions!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
❤Eddie Van Halen 😊
Wow, and I have the same reaction watching Brain May play the Red Special.
And then he did the Star Fleet Project EP with Edward Van Halen, which was a great record we enjoyed very much back in the day.
One smart cookie that Brian May, he achieved a PhD in Astrophysics. Eddie Van Halen RIP
Can Brian May be a more polite or nice human being? HE has changed music history and still is super humble, intelligent and soft spoken. What a great man
Well something to see was the Queen concert I saw in Detroit about 1974 introducing Night at the Opera before the album came out the best concert ever and Brian May shook my hand afterword ot back Masonic Auditorium in 1 degree weather
33 degree weather.
I saw Sabbath and VH in Chicago in 1978 3 days before I went into the Marines! Excellent Concert!!!
Brian Eddie was technology, you are the heart
Classy respect
Brian May…… complimenting Eddie Van Halen. That is THE biggest compliment you can have!! Seriously…. Brain May??? Dude is a genius.
I'm sure Eddie would compliment Brian in the same way. He was also a pretty humble guy who downplayed his own brilliance.
So cool!
One hell of a compliment coming from May.
I remember when VanHalen;s first album came out and my friend had just bought it ( it was brand new ) . We played the first side and we stood there mouths open and both of us said " WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT " ! It turned the bands of that day upside down ! I can just imagine the panic those bands had ... " What do we do NOW " ! PK
That’s when I first heard about Van Halen. They opened for Black Sabbath in Wuerzburg, FRG. 1978.
They put on a fantastic performance.
For those who've never heard of it, look up May's "Star Fleet Project", a three song EP, the title track an Anime theme from a show his kids watched. May and Van Halen played together with a few other friends. It's not polished, but it's wonderful.
He's met a lot of artists and played with them - he's very awesome.
A concert where Van Halen opens for Black Sabbath, that must’ve been amazing to watch live.
Seeing Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen is already something
On top Tony Iommi is a friend of yours and you play in a band called Queen 😅

I saw that tour.
Somewhere in West Germany.
Not Munich. Maybe Goppingen?
Long time ago.
We had not heard of Van Halen before. Had no idea what to expect.
It was amazing. Never heard anyone like Eddie. Left our jaws hanging open.
Dave was wild too. Band was firing on all cylinders.
We thought Van Halen might have just blown Black Sabbath away. How could anything top that?
We were pleasantly surprised.
Tony, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill were hands down the better of the 2 bands that night. Everything we could have hoped for from a Black Sabbath concert. Top 5 show in 50 years of seeing live music.
Everything about the Sabbath set was just a bit more professional, a bit more experience and musicianship showed. I imagine VH gained that experience over the next few years but I never saw them again.
Very cool.
Edward was, and will always be the GOAT!
No
Hands down Hendrix.

Eddie 2 hands tapping guitar hell yeah❤
In the early days Van Halen used to cover Queen songs like Now I'm here
I was fortunate enough to see Van Halen. I think it was five different times in Louisville the first time. around 1978 or nine they were opening up for journey in Montrose. I was about 15 years old and I had never seen anything like that in my life and I’ve been to several concerts before that, and I got to see him several more times in the last time was when Sammy Hagar first joined the band.
But they changed music and they changed concerts and then I found that first concert ticket $5.50 is what I paid to see them open up for journey
Bluesbreaker.. B-side to a 12" 'Starfleet' single it's Eddie and Brian jamming over a 12 bar blues progression in E and it's AWESOME! you MUST hear it friends.. :-)))
The whole 'Starfleet' EP is amazing. All three songs.
When Brian May is impressed by you you made it.
Magical ....a great player is a kind of magician
Fast Eddie, RIP.
High praise
Look up Brian mays starfleet project to hear the jam togeather.
Birds of a feather flock together
Eddie Van Halen is/was the most innovative guitarist since Jimi Hendrix.
Saw vh open for sabbath at the manchester apollo in 78,
I would love to take a lesson from Dr. Sir Brian May ( and Tony Iommi).
EVH FOREVER!!!
People say that about you too Brian,
Unlike most musicians.... Eddie wasn't traditionally taught how to play guitar... he was classically taught piano.... an he approached the guitar with.... there's 6 strings an 12 notes.... so do what you want with them
I remember taking guitar lessons at the time Eddie came out with eruption. I always wondered what happened to that guitar.
If Dr. Brian May - who believe it or not, has a real Ph.D. in Astrophysics and is a living prodigy, cannot figure out some of the things Eddie did on the guitar, I don't feel so bad not being able to play some of Van Halen's songs either.
Class act. Brian May. No mistake whos playing. Completely unique
Kinda hard to say in terms of exactly how it went down and with due respect to Sir May here, but where he doesn’t go is how things were seriously deteriorating for Black Sabbath were on the Never Say Die! Tour, which led to them firing Ozzy in 79.
It was a lot more than the drugs. Songwriting disagreements and Ozzy’s refusals to sing on certain songs when he returned to the band the same year he left (during that time a new singer came in and they wrote the lyrics with him; Ozzy spent his time forming the very first, 1978 incarnation of the later solo project with band members from Necromandus, who toured with them on the first album)
I seen Eddie play many times! And he was so good it looked fake! But I knew it was all Ed!!!
Some say it was talent, only a few know he had the pick of destiny
Rockin a white mullet 😎
Gotta love hearing a legend talking about meeting another legend via a third legend.

There's a bunch of truly astounding and talented young guitarplayers out there, and I do so hope that, in the years to come, they'll be able to post similar stories on whatever platform is available by then....
Saw Van Halen open for sabbath in Philly on that tour and Eddie was otherworldly but at the same time Roth even though a great front man , was annoying with his circus ring master style. Sabbath was louder and great as usual also, my ears still ring from that show.
Brian May is ver good at being "humble"......o like that
EVH really was kinda like the hendrix of the 80s
I heard Eddie did irruption that night, and Ozzie said it was the biggest mistake Black Sabbath ever made
