  • Congratulations to the incoming class of medical students, whether you are the class of 2026, 2027, 2028, or whatever year you're watching this. You earned it. You deserve to be here. Be excited about what you are learning, and don't let anyone extinguish that flame. We need your excitement now more than ever to show the world that a career in medicine is and always will be worth it. To the older students who will become residents, the residents who will become attending, and the attendings who will care for students, plant the seeds of encouragement and kindness to those under you. You never know what fruit may come from it years down the road, and the patients you will indirectly help with your guidance.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this! I just began my 3rd year rotations today and I think this message applies just as well to those in my stage too. Social media can really be so discouraging because it is often times a place people use to vent out their frustrations about medicine. But I realized that social media is only one piece of the story and in real life, I see happy residents and attendings every day that DO love their jobs and are NOT burned out. I love your message of encouraging people to be excited and enthusiastic about what they're learning about and (more so in the clinical setting) just in awe of what we get to do every day! It's okay to enjoy it!

    • @NDMD

Thank you so much Andy. It needed to be said and you said it, as always. As a last year medical student, it actually made me feel very nostalgic of those first months learning so much and feeling so confident, but also very proud of myself for getting to where I am today, despite losing most of that confidence over the last few years. At this point in our medical career it's important to tell ourselves everyday that, in spite of the road being so tough and so long, everything we learn each day matters, and we should be very proud of what we have accomplished. Keep doing what you do cause it's really inspiring, and important for the medical community of the present and the future 🙂 xoxo

Thanks so much for this!!! I just started my OMS1 year a couple weeks ago and have been feeling a little weird about how at odds my experience so far has been with what so many people have told me to expect about medical school. In many ways it was painted to me as this huge monster, and now here I am feeling like a kid in a candy store. 😂😂 I know the “honeymoon phase” will end, but by gosh, I’m going to enjoy it while I can and not feel bad about it! Needed to hear this today. 😊

I've never been a person to bash any first year's excitement for things. I rather teach them ways to avoid mistakes I made or ways to make their time easier. For me, I stressed out much more in my first two years of medical school than I probably need. It was a big transition time for me in other ways, so I've started to be less hard on myself. But even entering fourth year, the feeling of never being completely confident never goes away. In fact, I realize now that the hardest lesson to learn is to be okay with your ignorance and to accept that there is simply no way you can learn everything without practicing. It comes from a deep place of wanting to do well for your patients and be a great doctor. But the biggest decision each day is more about your attitude and seeking to grow than it is knowing all the answers.
Even during my fourth year, I'm still studying material and learning. It's only now that I realize why learning to study hard matters so much. No one is going to push you to be good at your craft. It's up to you to make the first step. From there, everything else takes care of itself over time. I say this from experience because I tend to be harder on myself. As my neurology attending told me, "I want to be at an attending level, but I'm still only at the medical student level. The only way to get there is to go through the process".
In other words, focus on your attitude and being excited to learn. It's not a competition or showing you enjoy your work more. It's about appreciating your part to help people suffering. I've never had a patient ever get annoyed for taking more time to talk with them or do a good history and physical. Rather, I've had more patients appreciate me caring and double checking than acting like I know everything

I’m just going into second year. I definitely feel the valley of despair point. Sometimes the load of med school on top of trying to be an adult and taking care of yourself, having a social life, trying to work and keep yourself afloat, the amount of content and work, just the constant hustle and push, it gets super overwhelming. I feel like med school can break you if you let it, and I kinda wanna tell the incoming students to hold on to their spark and passion because it’s going to be a tough ride and there will be times that they’ll want to fall apart. I know I kinda do. But I want to be an ED doctor more than anything in the world so I’m still pushing and trying and working. Working on myself and my perspectives too.

At least the mental and emotional part especially. I love that you did a video with an NP but maybe (and I know you’re super busy so you might not be able to) you can follow a nurse around for a shift? Not only would it be a fun video but I think it’ll make you a better doctor and give your followers more understanding of what nurses do.

The medical profession needs to fix a few things about itself. Long hours. High education costs. Toxic elements in certain specialties.
There's no doubt in my mind that it should remain competitive. That's one of the best ways to ensure that only the most qualified people are put in the position of making life and death decisions - and it is a great way to guarantee that medical advances will continue to be made
However, it serves no public good to have a system that encourages burnout and creates massive debt.
This is why we have shortages in psychiatry and family medicine. This is why we have patients who need access to doctors being forced to work with an even growing there's of NPs and PAs - helpful additions to the medical team but not for all patients and all circumstances.
