- Well, you finally made it. You nailed your first animation job. So, now what?
Kenny Roy, Founder and Director of Arconyx Animation Studios, offers his advice on how to start your first day at an animation studio. He recommends bringing a sketchbook so that you can learn to thumbnail quickly and accurately. Fill the sketchbook as much as you can on that first day and you'll be a step ahead when you begin planning your shots.
You may also be given a rig to learn. You should begin testing it by creating a basic walk cycle with your character. It's a good idea to test the extremes of the rig to become more comfortable with it.
Another way to really teach yourself the rig is to put the character into a situation where something goes wrong that interrupts your regular cycle. Then, teach yourself how to recover the character. By taking the extra initiative to familiarize yourself with basic tasks, you'll be animating in no time.

Blender 3D is a great program for beginners or pros that's free. Pencil is a good traditional 2D style animation program that is also free. I know your comment is old, but I figured I'd post this anyway.
On my first day working in an animation studio, I tried to animate something.......they soon put to stop to that!
