The Djoko Era at the AO was about to end. Only it didn't. Massive mental effort from Djoko. Unbelievable win! He played subpar the whole match. The third set was one of the worst I've ever seen from him. He had no idea what he was doing on the court. But he recovered in the fourth and was more than solid on serve in the fifth. Dominic played very well the whole match, yet he did choke in the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth set and that cost him the title. Djoko is where he is for a reason. That's the reason: mental toughness. It's easy to win when your A game is here. The wins that count most are those in which you play your worst tennis.

I think winning the AO so easily last year screwed him up for 3 months. Hopefully this struggle will avoid another disastrous 3 month period like last year losing to ridiculous players. I have a feeling this will be one of his greatest years. Next year will be good and then he will pretty much retire. He won't be sticking around like Federer. He has too many other interests. He's now 13-0 for the year and he has beaten 5 top ten players. He's avenging losses to guys he lost to last year and when the new serve is working I don't think he's beatable right now.

If I have to be precise Thiem had 2 struggling matches against players on fire before the final, while Djoko played Raonic(?) and an half dead Federer. So the starting conditions have been actually unfortunate to him, giving Djokovic a slight advantage. Then the court spoke, and Djoko won legitimately. I just said that the guy deserves more than what he got, hence unfair.

Not really. He needs to be in better shape. Similarly to Wawrinka, Thiem will always pose a problem for him, especially on clay, for he is hitting big. The difference being that Wawrinka hits down the line backhand with consistency and Thiem doesn't. When it comes to the rest of the next gen, Zverev can't hold a candle to him, Tsitsipas is not mentally ready to challenge the best. In fact, Medvedev is the only with a potential to be a multiple grandslam winner, for he is mentally there and his game only lacks a signature shot. If Medvedev hadn't met Wawrinka, he would have been a nightmare to deal with in the Final, for he is so similar to Djoković in the way that they don't hit big, but both rarely miss and play important points really well. All in all, Thiem on clay and Medvedev in all surfaces are the only real threats for Djoković.

Yeah, but that was one of his last GS. Maybe the last one. Roger will get a last one somewhere and Novak maybe too. Then it’s time for Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas.

RattleSnake if Thiem was a bit more experienced he would’ve won today. He was the better player. Yes, they are getting old and that’s the point. There are still 3-4 GS left for them but then that’s it. I don’t think that anyone will catch Federer. There’s a last one for him somewhere. I don’t see Nadal winning another one. Novak maybe 1-2. That’s it.
