Seems like they hit a niche that no one else has. Every time I look they are alway sold out in one steel or another. They have a great selection of steels a large variety of handle materials and sheath materials and all at a good price. Between 150 and 350 for a customized knife with tons of options is a great thing to see on the market. I have an ak 5.5 in 3v on the way and I cant wait to see how it performs.
I got the AK8 in Magnacut when they first dropped a while ago. Literally sold out in minutes. Been a fan of Architect Knives when they were only offered through TKC and referred as the “Field Buddy”. White River makes the Magnacut and S35VN blades and Tops makes the 3V and 1095 blades.
No, I added one to my cart in the morning when I received their email notification and it remained available for whole day. It was sold out at the end of day but became available again next day, so I placed order and it took me $303 with belt hook. I just received it, looks amazing.
The AK 8 looks pretty nice, I have the AK6.5 That said I think it would be neat if they went with the Junglas handle profile for the AK8 instead of the Esee 5/6 handles. I think the extra bird beak on the end of the Junglas handle would complement the 8 inch blade better. Maybe I’m wrong but just my thoughts
I love seeing ridiculous knives that put a smile on my face, no matter how useful they are. 😊 The Dawson Knives Seraphim is another 8" Magnacut Zombie Apocalypse knife, they also make a 11 3/4" Magnacut machete.
I love all my architect knives! I love your Videos I have been watching you for 8 years and you got me hooked on them. Congratulations on you and your wife anniversary. I hope y’all have many more.
Thanks for this Aaron. This is REALY good news for me, because magnacut is the most amazing thing for my always hot, always humid Tropical environment.
Magnacut blades just dropped & I came down on one like a sumo wrestler. Red & black G10, black leather patern kydex. Just wish they still had the blue & black G10 scales available. My favorite handle. Although I just got purple & black suretouch & that is a nice material. Feels like a combo of G10, MICARTA, & CRAYTON. Blue & black G10 is still my favorite, though. Especially from bradford knives, their micro texturing feels excellent.
That AK8 is an awesome knife. Great review, makes me want one. However, since I already have the Lionsteel M7 I just can't justify it. The price is reasonable for what you're getting in a lifetime tool. Thanks for showing it to us.
Hey Aaron, I always love your videos. My wife and I would love to start getting into outside adventures, but don't really have experience. Have you ever considered starting a small biz being a guide/trainer? Taking people out into the wilderness on hikes and camping trips, and at the same time teaching people survival skills. My gosh, if I had enough cash, I'd be all over that. You seem like you'd be a great instructor.
@@gideonstacticalAnother 'vote' for you to think about this idea? You have the added advantage of having all your videos behind you to aid you in marketing an endeavor like this. 👍
I've made a few knives in Magnacut with a target harness of 62 HRC. I think that's the sweet spot for a woods knife. You get a reasonably tough knife with very good edge retention and excellent corrosion resistance. If it was a kitchen knife I'd go for 63-64 HRC.
I have a couple of knives in that size range. when I do carry them, it has to be in conjunction with something more reasonable, in the 4-1/2 to 6" range. while I do appreciate the capabilities of large knives, it is much less nimble for the small detail tasks that I do much more often than the huge chopping type tasks. I like the design of this knife a lot. the ones I mostly use in this range are the BK9, SCHF43 ( first gen) and the CRKT Half a chance ( yeah, it's 20 ounces, but does not feel it)
I’m still a little skeptical on this large of a blade in magnacut. While I think the HRC is a solid choice at 62, I’d prefer this steel in like their 5.5 size since it’s such a great all around steel. I’d also like to see a non skeletonized tang in 6.5 and 8 since you know you’ll be chopping. I’d like to see the 45 lb. Weight test with the blade clamped further out from the tang as well, but thanks for your content! Another great vid.
Magnacut has been questionable in my opinion, but the more knives I try with it and more amazing I think it is. It has to be heat treated right, and blade geometry is still more important, but it's definitely worth the upcharge in many knives. But not all knives. Some designs and functionality are a waste of money to pay extra for this premium steel. Very cool review and surprisingly great price for this knife.
Not gonna lie but haven't watched knife videos for awhile. And have sold most of my collection which was substantial 4- 64 gun, gun safes full top to bottom. From cheap to stupid expensive custom knives like Cordova, Lovelace and others. The reason is the prices like this and people actually saying oh that's a good price, when it's absurd. This is coming from a guy who had excess of $50k in knives. But what they are charging is crazy. I still have several magnacut knives it's good don't get me wrong . But it isn't like a miracle like some think. but I don't get drunk on all the new fads like most either. Just my opinion. And I know what they say about opinions. Góod luck with your show, you do a great job .
I think for absolute toughness I’d still take 3V, still has decent edge retention as well, huge trade off being it won’t be nearly as stainless as magnacut. Living in the PNW where rain and moisture is regular in the outdoors I’d probably go with magnacut for my needs personally. I’m glad to see this held up well, probably the best all around stainless option currently for this application. I think this might be a good “single knife option”
Just a heads up, when building your knife if something isn’t available it will automatically change the blade size to where that option is available. It will not notify you of that change. Double check the details before you hit purchase.
So glad to hear they are running this at 62HRC. Makers tend to run steels too soft thinking they are increasing toughness. It took outcry from the community to get Benchmade to increase their 3V to 60, for example. But Magnacut has a toughness peak at 61-62 and should never be run any softer than this. It's about 1.5x tougher at 62 than 1095 is at 57 (like ESEE, etc.), and has over twice the wear resistance. The corrosion resistance is a bonus.
Hi, you mentioned MagnaCut has a toughness peak at 61-62 HRC... Do you mean it has lower toughness at lower hardness? If so, I would appreciate you give me a link towards this information because I've read just about everything on it on the KSN website and never have seen such data. Thanks in advance for your help.
In order to get a toughness/hardness curve you have to correlate the austenitizing and tempering temperatures with hardness and toughness on different charts and the tables on the white paper. It'd be great if Larrin would put all this in the same table for us. Sometimes different charts and tables give different hardnesses for the same temperatures, so that adds a layer of difficulty. This might be with/without cryo, not sure. But we only have one datapoint that I can find for under 60.5hrc which is 1950f/350f at 59.5hrc and 13.3 toughness. Actually, now that I look at the data again, I wonder how tough 2050/450@~59hrc would be. However, many steels have a toughness peak around 59-61, depending on the steel. This means they are tougher at this hardness than at 56, for example. I assume this is because there is an embrittlement zone for these steels in this region. Other steels, like 10xx are very linear and don't have any peak at all.
Hi GT, thank you very much for this nice and honest review which covers all aspect of this knife, well done. Since both the AK8 and the M7 are knives I'm interested in and that you own, may I ask you what are their Blade Width from spine to edge, let's say about in the middle of their blades? Thanks a lot in advance for this additional info/spec.
I much prefer aggressive jimping. If they knock it down at factory, you cant get it back. I consider it a plus when spines are 90 degrees sharp and jimping is aggressive. Easy peasy for people with delicate fingers to file or buff it down.
Talking about steels, MagnaCut goes side by side ranking top 2 knife steels with Cruwear in terms of every preferred factors about a knife. My preferred blades are about 8 inches for full functions. This knife fills almost every my needs except the tip. A Tanto tip will be more reliable.
So you released this video at the same time as the availability of the knife was made public. By the time most people saw this, it was sold out LOL. It was sold out by the time I got power back, less than 24 hours. With the weight savings, I'd replace a kukri with one of these.
I was wondering if I could do a review evisit to the spyderco plain edge saber grind endura and a review of the case bridgeline series of knives thanks.
G'day Aaron, right up my alley for a primary blade on the trail. Not sure I'd go with a Magnacut version as a first foray into this steel, I'd probably go with 3V on this design and I'm sure 1095 would be fine too. Anyway, always great to have options. 300+ USD is getting up there, but some knives are just worth it IMO. Personally I'd spend that sorta dough on a proper survival tool such as this, rather than a little fella 6 in. or less. btw; I'm sure you've mentioned it before, apologies if I've forgotten, is Magnacut "relatively" easy to sharpen, ......... when the time does come ; ) ................ say with a WS Field Sharpener ? Cheers Duke.
Well hopefully the heat treatment is better than the 6.5 3v one I have. It chips like crazy from use. Which is wild considering I don't get that in my other 3v knives. My guess is the first run of the 6.5 had horrible heat treatment QC.
I think the AK8 is too big. The big ones especially hurt & fatigues my hand during heavy use. I much prefer the AK3 which is a much more reasonable, respectable, and just all around better size. Despite its smaller size it’s all about how you use it. Yea we’re talking about knives.
Nice knife but I would take a hatchet (Fiskars x7) and a 4-4.5 inch knife instead on a deep woods excursion. The hatchet is 10 times more functional and 1/10th the cost. The smaller knife is MUCH better at food prep, both store bought and wild caught.
What’s the HRC on the MagnaCut? Is there an option without the useless “hammer” (rhetorical question). Does your discount code apply to the smaller size offerings? Also, they automatically give a 10% discount for signing up for promos, will it work with your discount or must we choose one?
Great questions many of those are addressed throughout the video. I believe White River Knives is the OEM and they are doing a 62 Rockwell throughout the whole Knife. They post the HRC on there spec page of each knife and steel. Excellent in my opinion for a giant survival Knife wouldn’t want magnacut any harder. My promo code works site wide on any of their tools or accessories all you have to do is click my link and I’ll automatically be taken off a check out. Or you can mainly type in gideonstactical anytime you want and you’ll get the 10% off promo code. Hope that helps! 👍
And I’ll just depends on the size of Knife as well as when I get it. A little mini Fix blade doesn’t need that long to test out versus a giant 8 inch. Knife needs to see more testing. And if I did six months testing on every single Knife videos would only go up every six months or so.
Great review. I wish they made the field buddy 5.5 in stonewash magnacut. I have the 3V but would buy another in magnacut. Also, I don’t think your bag hanging test is worth much. Have you seen how much weight cold steel hangs off their FOLDERS? Hundreds of poounds. I don’t think a magnacut fixed blade cares about 45 pounds. Maybe try 200-300 pounds? Even then I doubt it would hurt it
The point of this company and knife is so you can customize it. So each part is a cost. Choose your Knife steel and that will affect cost, choose your handle material will effect cost, choose your sheath and attachment options this will effect cost.
@@gideonstactical I emailed them. Good response, they got back to me within half a day. Have you considered doing videos on your top knives in each category after all these years of so many knives? Example - This one vs a Reiff F6 and so on (Personally I think anything 6" and up serves largely the same purpose), pricing irrelevant. Also curious if you have any plans on being able to review the BK76 magnacut or the LT Wright Genesis in PSB-27.
Good video, but design is flawed. Choil indicates designer does not know what handle is for. Secondly , super steel requires super stone to sharpen. Give me 01, 1095, or 80crv2. I can sharpen those on a wet rock or leather belt.
Thanks so much, I will have to disagree on two points. First any knife over 6 inches should have a choil unless it’s strictly a thin machete for clearing under growth. Second, if you haven’t used MagnaCut you will be surprised. I can easily put an edge back on MagnaCut with my worksharp field sharpener. Much easier than m390 or Elmax steels. Similar to s35vn from my experience to resharpen. YMMV
@@gideonstactical Thank you for your reply. Choils to me make no sense as I see no value in losing the first inch of blade to create a spot for your finger to sit right next to razor sharp steel. Secondly, what are you gaining by this? Maybe another inch of grip at the expense of the first inch of blade. Perhaps you might consider making a video on your knife preferences explaining, in greater detail, your inclination for choils on a larger blade? Might be a worthwhile subject..
Tip testing cross grain at an 8th of an inch deep is nothing more than a joke and you know it! Then hammer that thing 2-3" into a tree and stand on it! Putting your bag on it with solid hold at the Ricasso ain't a test either! Get real man! Like really! Get real! That Surprise Knives ripoff will absolutely fail!! I would never want any Magnacut knife to be anything more than a 3" paring knife! I will never buy this brittle high hrc steel for any reason other than shaving my face! But hey, please don't bend it without a face shield on at least!😂
How would you compare this to the BK9? I use mine to chop through heavy brush here in Maryland to gain better access to civil war camp/fighting grounds.
I'm a Daily Use / Hard Use knife user, and actually use them for my job. I could care less if a knife is Magnacut. It doesn't offer anything over 3V or even M4. One of the most used and rugged knives I own is a Benchmade Freek. Magnacut is a Marketing Fad.
As I said in the the video limited quantities sold out in about 48 hours. Next batch will be 3V and will be coming soon. I will post up when it becomes available.
Yeah to each their own. Knives over 6 inches I we prefer oils definitely helps with controlling a large 8 inch blade. That’s why I don’t use the BK9 very often.
@@gideonstactical all good man, they're gonna make more. I missed them cause they were gone so fast. I hope they keep em at the current pricing next run though
I don't get why everyone believes that our steel is good. It is bad steel and I know that my dad used steel filet blades in his beef Packing job for only a few months bcz they broke and shattered by a heavy user cutting beef loin and deboning the rib and side loin of a cow. The only knives and brands that lasted in truly heavy use and my sharpened my dad's knives so well it cut through the chain mail he wore at his job as a younger man. He used Swiss and Spanish steel knives. I've some Spanish and Italian steel knives to. But as my knowledge and practical application I've used different knife steels and makers. Us steel stinks!!!
@@tacticalcenter8658 I don't think so. The filet and heavy use us made knives broke and shatteed just by sharpening and my cutting into frozen beef and boning a large cow loin. My dad and everyone had the same well known and respected us company's knives and were said to be the best in the world. But every beef packing plant in my big famous cattle city tried us made knives. Us made knives aren't good. I've used us made hunting and tactical knives on camping and in practicing my survival knowlege skills. I've gone to South Dakota USA and bought $500 us famous smiths carbon steel crio tempered cobalt and s35vn hand forged knives and us spring steel knives made in the USA in Montana and South Dakota etc. They all couldn't hold an edge and sharpening them like I know how to get supreme sharpness on a goof knife. Like I can sharpen my knives to cut through bisom and bull bone. I cN sharpen knives amazingly well. I've had Italian and Spanish knives that never chiped or rolled. But us made and famous us Smith knives breaks and chip. It's just us steel isnt good

Aaron, do you still rock a pinky lanyard on any knives? You taught me that trick a few years ago and I still use it today.
Yes, I usually do that on sub 5 inch knives and the knives that are over 5 inches. I do the one in video. 😉👍
@@gideonstactical good to know. Thank you!
Just went on their website and built one. $393.50
Not bad for a custom built blade system in that steel at that size.
Well hopefully the heat treatment is better than the 6.5 3v one I have. It chips like crazy from use. Which is wild considering I don't get that in my other 3v knives. My guess is the first run of the 6.5 had horrible heat treatment QC.
Wow! Good to know, I would reach out the Ethan. That shouldn’t be happening and no chipping on mine.
Please let us know if you need assistance on this. To date we've had no customer contact regarding any 3V steel chipping issues.
Awesome review. Can't afford it, but i really like it.
Anything like this knife in another "super steel"?
So tired of the Magnawagon. Thanks gidy!
I’ll take it 👍🏻😉
Great, great American value, nice job on the extended review
Tops Steel Eagle. Done!
Haha! The steel eagle is a beast but this will easily out cut and is way more ergonomic. The eagle will out baton and pry and that’s about it.
Does the AK8 use the same handle scales as the ese 6?
If it does I will be buying blue & black G10 scales from knifeconnection for it.
Yes, they stated that in some of their descriptions.
@@gideonstactical
I'll have to make do with the red & black scales. Knifeconnection don't have the blue & black scales either.
Unfortunate......
Badass knife
Nice solid blade. To big for my needs but very cool none the less
Would love to see a comparison between this knife and the ESEE Junglas
The Junglas is the better chopper because the weight and length, but this will out perform it in everything else.
Ochoco Bushcraft posted a video of just that
I think the AK8 is too big.
I want one!
Not sure why they don’t offer orange handle and sheath options for the ak 8
How do you try out so many knives over a longer time?
And I’ll just depends on the size of Knife as well as when I get it. A little mini Fix blade doesn’t need that long to test out versus a giant 8 inch. Knife needs to see more testing. And if I did six months testing on every single Knife videos would only go up every six months or so.
Architect AK 6.5 or the Lionsteel M7?
Are you back in Colorado?
Yes moved back 2 years ago
Just tried to price the AK8 with magnacut and it’s not an option. Never mind I found it.
I have the AK8 in 1095. Its good enough.
Whats the hardness of the magnacut?
I have a whole section on that in the video, it’s 62 Rockwell throughout. Great for a large survival knife.
Sharpened spine?
Mick Dundee would be proud of that
Great review.
Even then I doubt it would hurt it
Yeah, and fix just 1 inch from the tip for a bigger lever
I do not see it in stock. Bummer
9am ET this morning they will be available
@@gideonstacticaloops, Thanks!
Im surprised they kept this under a pound. Thats insane
Ya nuts!
I really dislike when they sell a knife then charge you for the handle and sheath
The point of this company and knife is so you can customize it. So each part is a cost. Choose your Knife steel and that will affect cost, choose your handle material will effect cost, choose your sheath and attachment options this will effect cost.
I'm from EU, can you help me to buy one?
Nice
FYI - May 2025 is when they expect to have another drop of AK8 Magnacut. W...t...f....
Where did you see that? I know 3V is coming next.
Hey Aaron can u do a review of the spyderco plain edge saber grind endura and of the case bridgline knives
I will see what I can do
Good video, but design is flawed.
Thats a camping knife built for a space marine.
Haha 😆 yes!
Or a Roman gladiator.
Shit…looks like the joker nomad 6.5 but more and I got 3 of those ( for my son and I scratched one up well so I got another)
Sorry DBK
Tip testing cross grain at an 8th of an inch deep is nothing more than a joke and you know it! Then hammer that thing 2-3" into a tree and stand on it! Putting your bag on it with solid hold at the Ricasso ain't a test either! Get real man! Like really! Get real! That Surprise Knives ripoff will absolutely fail!! I would never want any Magnacut knife to be anything more than a 3" paring knife! I will never buy this brittle high hrc steel for any reason other than shaving my face! But hey, please don't bend it without a face shield on at least!😂

@@WhispyWoods. i got 55??! Thanks man! Only had 54 an hour ago! Sweet!😁
How would you compare this to the BK9? I use mine to chop through heavy brush here in Maryland to gain better access to civil war camp/fighting grounds.
Bk9 better chopping ak8 better at everything else
@@gideonstactical That what I figured. Thank you Sir.
Ochoco Bushcraft compares this with the bk9 and junglas
I'm a Daily Use / Hard Use knife user, and actually use them for my job. I could care less if a knife is Magnacut. It doesn't offer anything over 3V or even M4. One of the most used and rugged knives I own is a Benchmade Freek. Magnacut is a Marketing Fad.
It depends on the heat treatment, but the only advantage i see is corrosion resistance. Primarily on the the m4 though...
They dont even have it in magnacut
As I said in the the video limited quantities sold out in about 48 hours. Next batch will be 3V and will be coming soon. I will post up when it becomes available.
I’d be all over this knife if it didn’t have a choil tbh
Yeah to each their own. Knives over 6 inches I we prefer oils definitely helps with controlling a large 8 inch blade. That’s why I don’t use the BK9 very often.
Sign me up for 8" and above MAGNACUT blades, ive been a believer for a while now
bro, come on ive been waiting on payday to go build mine while theyre still reasonably priced. now im sad cause ur vids gonna sell em out dude
Sorry my friend
@@gideonstactical all good man, they're gonna make more. I missed them cause they were gone so fast. I hope they keep em at the current pricing next run though
Give it to this RUclips guy Joe X for testing. Then we really see if its up for the task. I dont buy any knife without watching his test first.
MARLBORO! 😁👍🏻
Joe X is a moron.
In that case buy a thick pry bar and a belt grinder, then you could make Joe’s perfect knife 😂
That's not even big!!
Its probably due to heat treatment.
It's just us steel isnt good
Don't know what you are talking about
useless unless you live in the woods
Um ok
I would love to see you review Busse knives under hard use. I fell for the fanboy hype, and have been disappointed. Many tell me i am unrealistic, so i would be happy to loan you my Ratmandu for testing if you can't get one otherwise. It has a good design, but the steel....ouch.
Contact me if you would be interested in testing it.
