There are different sensors for oil pressure gauge and oil pressure light so get the right one!
For gauge:
WVE/AIRTEX/WELLS 1S6563
STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS PS315 {#53004550, 56026782, 56026782AC}
For Light:
STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS PS135 (2 Terminal)
WVE/AIRTEX/WELLS 1S6550 (1 Terminal)
After being submerged underwater for a few hours, it seems my oil pressure sender has crapped out. It would only read a few psi when cold and then drop to zero as it warmed up. I figure since the engine still sounded fine and oil getting to the valve cover that my oil pressure sender was to blame. Real easy to replace. Just unscrew it from the elbow and you're good to go. My new unit came with some teflon tape pre installed so I screw it back on and I had readings again. You can notice the hesitation when i first start it as the filter and sender fill with oil.
If your gauge is pegged at zero you have a short to ground.
If your gauge is pegged past 80 you have open circuit (no ground).
Old one - but again as your all Renix info - simple and clearly explained! Good job!
Thank you for this guage test idea that is what my issue is my guage is almost pegged
Dude, you're awesome. I recently bought an 88 XJ and your videos are a life saver man. Keep that shit up! When I get to working on this thing I'll try to share the knowledge as well!
Man you just fixed my Jeep. Had a bad ground.
Can you tell me where the ground wire for it is located?
Where was the ground?
It's a 1 wire sensor. The thread is the ground.
@@NickInTimeFilms how can I tell if it’s bad or not?
If you have a meter, measure from the sensor body to the battery ground and see if there is any Resistance. Clean the engine ground by the dip stick
Hey I have a question. After many decades of just thinking my oil sensor is bad, I now know the issue is a bad ground because of your video. It pegs all the way full like you said. But now what I don't understand is how to fix this?! I did the "Big 7" replacement of all major wires and cleaned off all oil etc, but still no luck. Any ideas on what this could be? I mean where the bad ground could be?? Thanks!!
I know this is a old video but my 89 does this where it goes anywhere from 40 to max as I press the gas. But will also stay at low when I'm cossting. Would this be the issue? It runs ans sounds good
What did you do to fix the bad ground ?
Cant beat a new part..!"
Thank you for this video!
Where did you find the sending unit? I can’t seem to find ins
Needing some help finding one too
@ I auctially got one at oriellys
Stupid question but do I have to drain my oil before I do this
Austin Frank did you ever find an answer to this question
+Hunter Wuesthoff That would be a no. As in the oil is in the pan so you shouldn't loose any if the engine has sat atleast 5 minutes
NickInTimeFilms okay thank you very much
Great video. Thanks
On my 88 cherokee I have the same gauge as you do but I don't have an elbow & the switch/sender (single prong) I replaced was much thinner than the one you put in. When I turn on the power the needle jumps all the way up and stays there so I think I need that elbow & different switch/sender or bad ground like you said. Any thoughts?
If you have the gauge then you will need a "Sender." It sounds like you may have bought a "Switch" that is used for dummy lights. Make sure your parts guy knows you have a gauge and need a sender.
Does your gauge read 0 psi with the engine off? Stick a paperclip in the connector and attach it to a ground, does it read 0 psi now? If it won't read 0 when grounded, you have an open circuit somewhere. If it does then your wiring is good, you just need a good Sender.
Have you checked the gauge when the engine is running? If the Needle starts to go down when the engine is on, but spikes with the engine off, you probably have the wrong sender for your Jeep.
While off the gauge remains at max psi.
When grounded it drops to 0.
While running it remains at max.
& It's a single pronged.
Andrew Roby Well, the gauge responds normally so that's good. Since the sender doesn't seem to respond correctly it sounds like you got a bad or wrong sender.
NickInTimeFilms Yeah I'm glad I don't have to replace the gauge lol. I just replaced the sender so I know it's working but it's probably the wrong one. It took me 3 tries to match it to the one that was in there but I don't have the elbow that yours has (& seemingly every other jeep) so I'm thinking the last guy took off the elbow and threw this type in. I looked around for an elbow & sender combo but couldn't find any. I think i'm just going to go to a yard and pull one & replace the sender... again.
Thanks for the help again!
Does your oil psi increase with rpm’s?
Yes, that's how it should be on a healthy engine
@@NickInTimeFilms my gauge reads 30ish PSI at idle and all the time. If I unplug it it drops to zero.
Hey I have 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L my oil pressure gauge drops to 0 wind it Warm up but it don’t do it wind it cold and then I Press the gas it go back up
When oil heats up it gets thinner so pressure will go down. When you start driving, the pressure should go up with engine rpm.
Do you have a part number
