World's most scenic approach! Santos Dumont Rio de Janeiro

- Watch one of the best and most scenic landing approaches in the world at Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Flight from São Paulo Guarulhos Airport (GRU) to Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont (SDU) on PR-GVX a Boeing 737-800 delivered to GOL in June, 2013.
The approach to this airport is called "rabo de vaca" (cow tail) due to the shape described by the landing path. This might be one of the best landing approaches in the world.
SDU has two short runways (02-20) of 1323 and 1260 m.
In this video you will see during the approach the Maracanã Stadium, Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), lots of favelas, the Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) and Ponte Niteroi (Niteroi Bridge).
Check out the hard braking after touch down. In order to operate at this airport fully loaded, Boeing had to increase the performance of the 737-800. That included a two-position tail skid that enables reduced approach speeds, sealed leading-edge slats that provide increased lift during takeoff, and increased flight spoiler deflection on the ground that improves take-off and landing performance.
Airbus has to adapt the A320 to be able to operate at full load at this
airport. So far, the airlines can only operate here with A319 or A318 and E190/195. That means that they are losing passengers to GOL, which flies with an airplane capable of carrying 177 passengers.
My seat is 22F. I chose to be on the right side in order to have a better view of the beautiful beaches and islands of the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. This is a scenic flight actually. The scenery is amazing.

For a moment I thought the plane was gonna land on the water with it so low at approaching, thats why only the best pilots lands perfectly on the airstrip ..Amazing Scenery....
Esse aeroporto é fantástico. Adorava quando estava na barca e via o avião passando bem em cima dela. Tive oportunidade de morar num prédio em Niterói que ti ha vista pro aeroporto. Como passageira já fiz minhas fotos mais bonitas do Rio da janela do avião.
I already did this approach at a similar seat position and had the chance to see it close in the outside when I was at a ferry boat reaching Rio's downtown.

For international flights landing down in Rio, there is also the International Airport of Tom Jobim or the well known Galeao Airport. It is a larger one than the Santos Dumont Airport!
i flew into galeao on both my trips, i heard they don't use Santos Dumont for international flights anymore, maybe the cow tail risk i dunno

luckyly, the international airport, some 20km north, has a much bigger landing strip, better for heavy rain landings.
Under more severe bad weather planes are diverted to the (not so) nearby international airport.

Foi esse mesmo, voltando no dia seguinte no GLO1089.
O A320 ganhou algumas semanas atrás autorização para voar no SDU. Todos os Neo do Brasil podem, mas A320s fabricados antes poderão ser adaptados.
Resta esperar quando Azul ou Avianca iniciarão o uso deles.
Sim, eu li que a Azul vai ser a primeira em operar o A320 Neo em SDU, se não me engano, no início do ano próximo. Tem uma matéria na Flightgobal.com falando disso.

Amazing approach. Beautiful scenery. I still have to say, the old Kai Tak Hong Kong approach was the most impressive I've ever been on, and the most impressive to watch from the ground.
Thanks! A few months ago I went to Hong Kong. I only wished Kai Tak was still open to fly into that airport. Another spectacular approach was the old Quito's airport.
@@HDAviationVideos Even for a person like me that's afraid of flying, I feel a certain pride in having landed there on three separate occasions. I think I would've felt the same way after this Rio approach. It's quite spectacular, and looks challenging, even for the experienced pilot.
@@wilfig It is indeed. The runway is very short. Actually the Boeing 737-800 I was flying in has the SFP package for short field performance.
Is there any particular reason as to why the runway is this short? Couldn't they just make it longer so that it could support other aircraft types, or say, have the default airliners be able to land there without any special performance package?

Well, to take off from there is even more challenging. Actually, I just landed at CGH after a flight that took off from SDU.

Quem chega na "cidade maravilhosa" que de maravilha não tem nada , está chegando em um lugar sem lei , lugar onde a violência impera , lugar onde o sol torra a sua cabeça , lugar onde uma grande parte da população cheira cocaína e /ou fuma maconha ( financiando a violência e o caos ), lugar onde você vai se sentir em uma guerra, pois afinal, não vai ser difícil você ver um fuzil nas mãos de um afrodescendente ou uma pistola Glock .45 com carregador alongado de 30 cartuchos nas mãos de um branquelo de olhos verdes numa rua ou avenida da cidade querendo roubar seu dinheiro , carro ou motocicleta , lugar onde os políticos legislam em causa própria ( ALERJ ), lugar onde a Polícia Militar ( PMERJ ) trabalha debaixo da chibata e enxugando gelo e a Polícia Civil ( policia judiciária ) é ineficaz e inoperante . Comentario exagerado! A violencia está em todo país. Verdade que o Rio perdeu muito com transferência da capital do Brasil pra Brasília, piorou c/gestões Brizola, Cesar Maia, Garotinho e Eduardo Paes. Esses politicos parecem não saber que Copacabana, Ipanema e Leblon são os bairros turisticos mais conhecidos nacional e internacionalmente, por isso deveriam ser mais bem preservados! Moro no Rio há mais de 50anos, e, não o troco por outra cidade do país!
