While driving on a dark road at night in NH I hit a Barred Owl. It filled my windshield. I found it across the road unconscious. Called in a rehabber and he'd been hit on his head. Took a month but he survived and was released. Now I know why he flew into me, he couldn't see me. He was beautiful, jus exactly like this owl. Thanks for saving him.
Owls really are special. With those forward-facing eyes they look so much like a person. I'm happy to be a sponsor of 2 Great Horned Owls and a Barred Owl at a local nature center.
Yes I know better now. I felt bad after I discovered it had a broken wing. Im no expert, I was just trying to save a injured Owl that defintley would of died without my assistance.
It’s amazing that one of our greatest trates as human beings is the ability to sympathize with other species, its very interesting seeing the animals reaction when they realize they will not be eaten but helped... huh, now that I think about it, that’s why some animals go to humans for help instead of running, it’s rare, but sometimes it happens because they know that humans have a chance of helping them.
If its wing was broken I'm sure lifting it by the wings didn't help but I do hope they could save it and the wing is fixable. Thanks so much for going out of your way to find it and help it. I can't believe that someone thought that just by moving it off the road it was going to be OK.
Aww I know, I felt terrible after she told me the wing was broken. I really thought it was just the leg. Ill definitely handle the next one with more care. Of course, I really love animals and always help them if I can.
Nice hero man rescuer is finely tuned into nature as indicated by his head-bopping in synch with the pink parrot supervisor of the facility. Nice to see an inexperienced bystander working with what's available and doing all he can while trying not to hurt the injured owl further. He couldn't really grab the owl's legs because one was obviously broken. I was relieved to see him tuck in that blanket and add the tire to keep it from flying away during the 30 minute open ride to the repair facility or sanctuary. nice video.
This guy is trying to do the right thing and probably has no knowledge of owls and everyone is whining that he picked it up by the wing, like give the guy a break, he's helping it the best way he knows how to.
True but dont you think it would be beneficial next time for him to know how to handle the owl correctly? Owls can be very dangerous to your health if you dont handle them properly.

I just found a barred owl on the ground in the middle of my lane on my way home. I live out in the country and it was on a winding road through a wooded area. It was just upright on it's talons but its head was facing downwards. He didn't fight too much when I picked him up like I do the chickens (held him with wings pressed down against its body, opposite the way you held yours). Looking at his face his eyes were squint one eye barely opened. It seemed he was disoriented. I placed him in the back seat of my car under a laundry basked I had there. As soon as I arrived home, just half a mile away, I lifted the basket off and his eyes were fully opened. He tried to fly out the other way so I ran around my car and opened the other door. He flew out and is still perched up on this limb but it's pouring down rain now. Thought maybe I should have just placed him on the side of the road but I didn't want him to venture back into the road only to get hit. Hope this young one finds his way back home or maybe it will be out there in the morning. Hope it finds food. I searched on youtube to help me understand barred owls and how to help it. Like your video. ~nerissa (Ashland City, TN)
So if you see one of these guys injured, put a soft blanket over him and be sure to cover his eyes. If he had a wing or eye injury it may have been exaggerated by holding from the wings. Keep him calm is important. Any owl that loses his ability to fly or see has effectively lost his existence as an owl. In nature he would perish and his dna would be lost. With rehab he may live but kind of like you living with out ever being able to leave the house. A sad existence.
I have seen that lady from the Rehabcenter..some years ago in a film I could be wrong but last year i saw her gain an commentar said she died 3 years ago.

Never carry a owl by the wings, Control the feet control the bird.
That works for most birds but most birds don't have feet that are designed for tearing flesh to ribbons.
