I couldn’t disagree more! Before I bought myself this Rolex, people would say: Him? Oh, he’s nothing. Forget about him. Now it’s different. I overheard someone talking about me yesterday, and she said: “Let’s beat him up and take his watch.”

100% agree that Rolex is not a high end watch. And they know because you don’t see advertisements of Ferrari for example, but guests what: Rolex is the most advertised brand. And is advertise in place that aren’t for super rich people but you can se their advertising on stuff for middle class. Patek don’t need to advertise the Nautilus. Rolex is exactly like Apple: not the best but the most desirable because of the marketing around.

The watch community's insistence on viewing everything through the lens of "how does this compare to a Rolex?) reminds me of a few sports blogs/vlogs who would love to talk more about baseball, hockey, soccer, cycling, etc... but they also know that their bills are paid from the people who will read/watch anything and everything about the NFL.

Here in Italy is the same but with soccer (or football for the other side of the pond). Here everything is soccer related.
I tell you a funny thing: Francesco Bagnaia, 2022 MotoGp World Champion, was chosen to be the testimonial for the 2023 TIM advertisement campaign, TIM being the biggest communication company in Italy and one of the biggest sponsor of Ducati MotoGp Team. In this very days a new spot is on air with his name and face, cruising with "a friend of his" but... in the spot he's always out of focus! Why? Because his "friend" is Fabio Cannavaro, a beloved ex soccer player, one of the team that won the World Title in 2006! All the lead shots in the spot are for Cannavaro, while Bagnaia is ALWAYS out of focus!
I mean, I do understand that MotoGp isn't as loved as soccer, but a fresh world champion that won the world title with an italian bike after Agostini (more or less 50 years ago) is put aside because the soccer player is more recognizable to the masses, gives you the level of sports around here...
Everyone here knows who Cannavaro is. The same who knows what a Rolex is.

Brand reputation and history actually means everything to me as a consumer.
Just like how you’re advised to not purchase new models of a car, I wouldn’t purchase new brands of a watch.
Rolex has been around for 100+ years, their watches have mechanical movements that have survived WW2 battlefields, and if you can get a stainless steel model at MSRP, the value for the money is absolutely there.
If new companies become more well established in the years to come, I’ll definitely consider them, but not before then!

I disregard the more wild conspiracy theories but otoh, rolex does decide their product mix, rolex does decide not to sell direct and rolex has elected not to take deposits and sell to a real wait list. Andrew, I could agree with almost everything you say, except when you talk about RM. I don't think it can be compared to the AP Royal Oak, or any other watch for that matter. For me it is, and always will be, a joke, a sample of bad taste, an aberration without any aesthetic value, and they could be giving them away in a machine or at a fair, and I would never want one. I don't care how many complications they put inside that 'thing', if it looks like some colorful gift watch that children wear when they are 1 or 2 years old, it amazes me that adults may want to display them (proudly). This only happens because we are in an era of inversion of values, in which the beautiful is devalued, and the horrible is glorified.
It's comparable to when someone gives millions for a painting with some paint running, but for which there is always someone who invents a complex and esoteric artistic meaning, saying for instance that the artist was experiencing a personal drama of some kind when he created that "work of art". In short, RM designs are simply hideous, and there is no turning back, no matter how many people need to put them on a pedestal.

I set my timer for 30 minutes in a loading zone.
That way I know how long I've got in that zone for a delivery.

RM doesn’t appeal to my personal tastes but I do genuinely appreciate the technology they have implemented. The design aesthetic is something else entirely. I do think they have contributed to pushing existing watchmaking forward. As for Rolex, I own several and have always said that they are overpriced. Great watches but I think they could easily be 20%+ less. To be fair, you could say that many watches are overpriced/overhyped but that doesn’t mean that they are not great quality. And out complicating the rivals is not innovation. I have Rolexes, however I think their attempt at cool with the multi coloured OP is a little pathetic and straying from Andrew's very good observation that Rolex is simply doing what they have always done. It's the baying mob that gets their collective knickers in a knot over self created bubbles and predjudiced opinions.

I would tend, as others seemingly do, to agree. The drive, starting with the omnipresent 'Rolex' in the title, is all about clicks rather than substance. As is the proliferation of short reels which is testament to what is a simple but cynical business decision to put clicks above substance. I understand that but whilst adopting that route may bring short term gains the brand appeal is being rapidly diluted. I have a number of old clips saved in my library but I can't think of anything I have recently viewed that I have felt worthy of saving or that has added to my, or indeed anyone's sum of knowledge. In short, our host has gone down market and become a red-top tabloid version of what used to be a must-watch channel. None of this is an accident. It is very probably a calm marketing call in tandem with marketing trips to the US which have recently been advertised. Personally, I am somewhat disappointed but unsurprised. I can understand the push to monetise the brand, such as it is.

I disagree with your remark about treating watches as an investment; watches shouldn't be an investment. That said, I agree with what you said after that: financial considerations should be part of a a watch purchase there's a vast difference between "don't purchase watches that will lose all their value" and "don't buy watches as an investment". Investments are places where you put your money on the assumption it will go up in value for the good of your long term financial health. Betting on a watch to go up is unsound: the market is in a massive bubble. You also shouldn't buy anything you think will lose half of it's value tomorrow; wait until tomorrow and buy it used. You also shouldn't empty out your entire retirement account and purchase a bunch of Rolex watches.

The only reason that Rolex watches are scarce is that drug dealers snarf them all up since they use them as a payment method between each other when doing larger drug deals.
Instead of hauling a bag of cash, they have a Rolex on their arm, and then they do not as they walk away with a considerable amount of drugs.
Same goes for used car salesman as they are buying up chop parts from stolen BMWs.

My own collection is evolving as I gain self realisation. Where it goes is the journey, much like anything I suppose. I think just let people spend THEIR money on what THEY want, why THEY want.
All this holier than thou attitude is sad.
Telling people they have to wear watches they own, or cannot buy for investment etc. etc.
People often overlook that they may have multiple watches and do a bit of everything.
I am sure nobody ever tells a Swatch Collector he has to wear all 100 Swatches on rotation throughout the year!
We’re they not ‘made to be worn’ just as much as a Rolex, or a Ferrari was ‘made to be driven’?
But when it’s a Rolex it seems standard practice for the ne’er do wells in the comments to insist upon it!
Equally people would support a collector of most things doing it for a potential financial gain, but when it’s an expensive watch……. Not so much 😂

My ultimate point is that as long as there are more demand for Rolex watches than they can produce people will always express that they are unhappy. So even if every sales person at the AD’s was super helpful, super polite and super at everything people would STILL complain, fact. Second, I grew up in an an American town that was a port for British oppressors with cobblestone streets made by Hessian POWs. Lange & Söhne that are high end and fantastic, but those three are notorious for being the holy trinity of high end. I don't own any of them unfortunately, but I love the Nautilus and Overseas. The Royal Oak is also a great watch, but AP and the hype train they drive leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'd never own one. I do own two Rolex and love that they only seem to appreciate in value, I also drive a Toyato and think it's the best metaphor for Rolex. Solid, reliable and a workhorse I don't have to worry about.

Okay, point taken about your audience wanting Rolex videos even though I don't. Fair enough.
However, you were mistaken early on when you described Rolexes as a good investment, and then later on when you talked about watches in general as investments.
Sure, someone may see a rise in value if they buy a Rolex now. Or next year. And possibly forever. But when people buy things as investments, rather than because of the intrinsic value of those things -- that is what is known as a bubble. Remember all those people buying real estate in 2006, or crypto in 2021, and being so unbearably smug because they thought they were the smartest people in the world? They were participating in bubbles. didn't turn out well, did it?
They're called bubbles because they can pop at any time. As I said above, maybe the Rolex bubble will never, ever burst. But the fact that people are buying them as investments, rather than as watches, creates the possibility of a crash in prices.
And no, I don't think I'm the smartest person in the world. In fact I know I'm pretty silly. But what I'm saying in this comment is Econ 101.

Not true, I have bought and sold hundreds of watches over the years, I have now over 50. And I ALWAYS think of the resale value, why on earth would you not?? Actually 90% of people that are more than average interested in watches do think about it even if many don’t admit to it. Usually when you buy a watch you would consider between maybe 3-4 different watches, maybe you want them equally much. So if one of them seems to be a safer bet than the other ones in terms of resale value that would count in as a heavy argument, of course it would. Same thing when you buy anything expensive like a property or a car. Anything else would be unintelligent and bad economy.

I mostly agree with everything except investment. I don't think when people say don't treat it as an investment they mean don't consider the resale value (although I rarely do). I have seen people buy watches and then put them in a safe and never wear them like Star Wars toys staying in the plastic. Its sad and the point of watches is to enjoy wearing them. You shouldn't buy a car and keep it in the garage in hopes that it will go up in value (it won't). If you only have $10k and you want to invest it, put it in an EFT. If you can't afford $10k for something silly (watch, suits, fancy racing sim controllers) then don't buy a $10k watch.
2nd point I would make is a I pretty much agree with all the Rolex takes. I don't have any problem with Rolex as a company per se' (although the no-profit thing is straight up bullshit). I don't like how the ADs work people over, but I haven't liked Rolex from my time in college. They are boring. I think Frederique Constant's manufacture world-timers, Longine's Zulu GMTs, almost everything out of Germany, and Nearly every version of the Speed-master is more interesting than basically any Rolex (except maybe the 1908 or Cellini).
I don't like Royal Oaks. I also don't like Nautiluses. I don't like Richard Mille but I don't care if others do. I like dress watches so I don't like Submariners or Black Bays either. AP can certainly run their entire business of the Royal Oak but I won't be buying one. I would say I think they should loose their status as a Trinity member and it should go to A. Lange & Söhne if they do (maybe anyway), but that's just my opinion.

The 2021 model is one of the first with 3861 movement and I bought it to put away, I have never used it, it’s still in the plastic and when I touched it I used gloves. Do you find that sad?? I bought it partly as an investment, partly as I have a huge interest in Speedmasters. I have a son that does not know I have this watch hidden away. Maybe I can surprise him one day and gift it to him when he is much older. Maybe I can keep it and sell it 20-30 years into the future when they have stopped making this model, maybe I will show it to people so they can see what that watch looked like all those years ago brand new, not even touched by human hands since 2021. I just can’t think why that would make you sad? It makes me happy just to imagine it. I would disagree that RM had anytrhing to do with the resurgence of watches; I would argue it is primarily down to a lot more people wanting Rolex. After all, in 2010 only the stainless Daytona was hard to get, and only because they didn’t make many-I got 20% off a Sub and that was not hard. Then Rolex seem to get. an order of magnitude more popular (probably due to the other factor, social media) and suddenly people were talking watches again, and you couldn’t get any Rolex other than the OP/DD at a AD.
