Carl Tatz is an award winning studio designer and principal of Nashville-based Carl Tatz Designs. Carl draws his expertise as a studio designer and acoustician from over thirty years of experience as a GRAMMY-nominated engineer/producer, award-winning studio owner (Recording Arts), and two-time TEC Award nominee and one-time winner. Carl has shared his expertise through lectures and panels at Berklee College of Music, SAE, the Art Institutes, Mix Nashville, and AES events.
Now, Carl Tatz is recognized as the developer of the PhantomFocus System for monitor tuning and optimization.
The PhantomFocus System is a powerful tool in optimizing monitor systems. This system does not use any psychoacoustic DSP. Instead it concentrates first on “reach out and touch the vocalist” imaging where pinpoint detail is spread out before the listener in an almost holographic panorama. Through a combination of extremely strategic speaker/listener position calculations, proper speaker stands, damping and isolation devices, subwoofer systems, and more, full and accurate frequency response can be achieved!

We are blessed to be able to make music anywhere now, in our homes, in Hotel Rooms, everywhere!! Carl Tatz designs an amazing sounding studio to me reminiscent of the Classic Studios of Olympic where Pink Floyd made 'Dark Side of The Moon' or Abbey Road where The Beatles made so many amazing albums, or Capitol Studios, The Record Plant, The Hit Factory, all of those incredibly designed amazing rooms, well there is a guy, Carl Tatz who takes his time and makes those amazing rooms! Which studio would you like to see next? Let me know below!
Great video as always, Warren ! Any chance you could do one on the legendary Avatar/Power Station in NYC ?
Great tour like always. I would prefer the Shangri La Studio from Rick Rubin. That would be not more than awesome.
Bob Hodas!!! :)
I heard a Carl Tatz system at MTSU when studying there and I was so impressed with the imaging. Superb! And that graph in the video!!! Wow!!! That's what I call flat response!
Omar Rodriguez Lopez Studios.
I love the lighting, most studios seem very dark. Thanks again Warren!!!!
Yes, wonderful Peter!
Yes lighting is a huge piece in most designs, CT
It seems Mr. Tatz might be a fingerstyle guitarist, judging by his right-hand-only fingernails. I've noticed that folks that are deeply into the subtleties of acoustic instruments often have amazing ears, and minds. Kudos to him for his passion and groundbreaking combination of art, craftsmanship, and technology, and for sharing it with the world. Brilliant. Cheers
Was thinking the same thing when he was showing the amps and processors. I was like "Whoa, Carl is so into his work, he forgets basic man grooming." 😂 Then I noticed his left had had shorter fingernails.
I love these studio tour videos! Always a source of inspiration
Its videos like this one that we "home studio owners and builders " are looking forward to see! Great Job Warren and congrats mr Carl Tatz for the beautiful studio and great knowledge passed in a simple effective matter.
That's amazing to hear!!
Thank you RSguitar, CT
Wow! I wish I could meet these guys and sit in that seat. Thanks for this!
I'm always at NAMM and most AES shows! I believe I'll be speaking at some very soon!
Mr Tatz, seems like he is very proud of his studio. And he should be. Nice place. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, he did an amazing job!
Thank you!
Nice to see a Tree Audio Console!... A true favorite of mine-
Great stuff Carlo!!
Wonderful studio! Carl really. cares amount making a room sound great! So glad people still do!!
Yes, amazing sounding room!
I do!
Blown away. This is an amazing facility.
Agreed Mark!
Thanks Mark, good to hear from you.
This tour is legendary.
Aw schucks! Thanks ever so much
What a beautiful home studio! Carl seems like an amazing guy. Your videos with him are very good. Thanks!
Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Thank you!
Thank you Gentlemen both, for an amazing video and such an amazing bit of info on a studio design top to bottom, and for immediately after watching this video for 4 hours of complete tear down and re-set of my mixing space. It was the bit about the big monitor, and then of course that included building a whole new monitor stand/wall mount, and get it further back against the wall, bringing the desk out a bit too. Widening the monitor placement, measuring again to calculate the perfect sweet spot and have it hit just behind my head in the mix chair, angles, height, rebuilding the monitor stands (isoAcoustic btw..) etc.... Four hours later, and I feel like I've been PLAP'd properly!
I then spent the next 5 hours listening to music, and indeed hearing little details i might have missed otherwise!
Thank you Warren and Carl!!
Very interesting! I learned a few things. Thanks Warren!
Absolutely stunning studio and acoustic treatment. I’ve never seen anything so well thought out and conceived.
Thank you Alex!
Fantastic Alex!!
I dream of a place like that.
Hi Paul, Yes, truly wonderful!
Thank you Paul! CT
thank you!! very nice studio big respect !! greetz from Berlin!!!
Thank you Nikola!
Oh, and excellent restraint Warren! I thought for sure there would be a digression into the guitars hanging on that back wall...! Definitely the complete "tool box", where foundational guitar requirements are concerned.
Haha I hear you my friend!! We got so much amazing work done while we were there in Nashville!!
Nice to see Warren.
Seems as if Carl managed the unusual thing to do pretty damn good and “calm” rooms considering the amount of treatment. No studio will win any architectural award (well some actually has been designed well but that would be statistically uncountable.)
I hate to say this but I kind of wish Carl's wife would have a serious talk with him about his collar and shorts fashion style : )
It's a great sounding room indeed!!
@@Producelikeapro Now you just have to convince Carl he should sponsor you with a redesign of your room plus a set of monitors : )
@@cornerliston haha yes, indeed!!
You have me right off the 🦇 with the echo😍😁😎This is definitely my kind of tour. 💫🕊💓Thank you Carl, and Warren!
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
Thank you Audrey!
Thank you again Carl! I guess I've been horrified lately at how many people really do not innately get physics. I feel like my life depends on it. I start to feel
like, "Where can I find a sane person who at least understands the truth about physics?". So hearing this through again, it's life affirming to hear you, a person that not only gets it, but also gets it in the universal way of how it applies to everything❣️

Thanks a lot for the insight, Carl Tatz! And big thanks to Warren for bringing this to us. I am so curious about the PFS, and have been for a long time. Sooner or later I will have to go to Nashville to have a listen.
Love to listen this guy, everything he said makes sense. Genius!
excellent build he designed. those have to be the biggest bass traps behind the monitors I have ever seen!
Yes, it's truly a wonderful sounding room!
You can keep your luxury cars. I'll take a luxury studio please! I'm imagining the imaging!!
One of my favorite quotes is Hans Zimmer in a moog video. He mentioned that when he was a teenager he had the choice to either buy a car, or a minimoog. He finishes with, "I still don't drive."

Ooooh i'd love to sit there and check out that system. You just know it's gonna sound great! Nice drums David! :-)
Yes Chrs it's truly wonderful!
Let me know when you're in Nashville and I'll host your PhantomFocus experience.
Warren, I'm Ron Flack from Canton Ohio. So thankful for this video. I reached out to Carl a few weeks ago. He graciously invited us down to visit the Blue Grotto (Another location where Carl has installed a Phantomfocus System). This was shot a year ago, but I've noticed more recently that it appears you've positioned your Focals in what looks to be in keeping with Carls Null Positioning Ensemble Is that the case? If so wondering if it's made a difference for you. Thanks for all you do. Much appreciated.
Awesome!!!!!! my dream room!!! I got my dream phantom chair I dont change it for anything! i cant wait to let Carl do my room!🙀🙀
12:27 Perfect salesman, telling you "what you're gonna notice"...
Yep. Salesmanship 101 - manage expectations and prime the client.
Thank you for the observation!
Loving that guys collar
And the colour matches the console..... it's all in the detail!
Hey! I've been in that room! It's an eye-opening (ear-opening?) experience.
Looks like a similar time frame as well - I was there on 2019 Aug 26. Two ships passing and all that ;)
Now the real test would be to hear Queen in there.
I can't wait to see you try this in your room. :)
Nice.Never seen that guy.Good to see him!
Hi Follow Me
Warren,it would be nice if you would visit a Broadcast or Post production house and show people some other audio engineering marvels and how they deal with audio.Or a sound effect stage.Nice video love the studio tours.Been in many My self.
Thank you!
13:33 Mary Shut the Garden Door should be a meme like ten years ago. I mean it's a song about a fleet of sentient androids taking over a small town set to deliciously dirty funk groove.
I've been telling Hip Hop guys to sample that shit for years. lol
Geoff Bosco: I hear you about that one. If the hip hop guys won’t listen, why not do it yourself? Sample, loop and chop it up and create a killer 2 or 3 minute “bed”, then do a one off track with someone you know? I’m not a hip hop guy, my background is metal and industrial electronics, but it never hurts to try. And these days, a big song can come from anywhere. Online buzz/viral can easily cut out a major label for a song’s distribution.
That look's friggin awesome.. :)
I love sledge hammer btw!
yes ir does Edwin!
@@edwincrain986 me too! Masterpiece!
@@darlenesheffield9835 Yes, truly wonderful!
Thanks Edwin!
I sometimes think I have enough knowledge and experience to be (at least somewhat) productive in the studio environment but then I hear people like Carl Tatz and others featured on here and it's almost overwhelming how much is involved in this world of "ours". I feel like Wayne and Garth sometimes, "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!" But of course it passes and I go back into denial and just keep plugging away, lol!
Simpler thank you think!
I have a big 42" monitor in between my Adam A7X's and don't have the option to place my screen behind my monitors sadly
Knowledge is power
15:54 Nice crossfade! : ) Thx for sharing this interesting video! By the way, Warren, David plays a lot tighter on drums than you do! : ) Sorry...
Haha thanks Kevin!! Haha yes, David is a much better drummer than me!!
Crazy Cool!!!
Tree Audio Roots console! Awesome!
Used to work in Nashville. Spent a few days in- blanking on the name- multi-level behemoth studio (this was late 90s?) that Carl had designed and built entirely. I... was not impressed frankly. It looked super clean, his aesthetic has remained unchanged. But look, you build a room that is sized to an ideal as much as possible, RFZ that thing, (the ONE thing all acousticians agree upon) and then have 5 different world class studio builder take a whack at planning the rest of it. You'll get 5 different, but perfectly reasonable ideas and solutions.
The real trick (that I'm sure any fully employed engineer is aware of) is getting lucky with room dimensions and spending 10,000 hours learning how the room behaves. But...well, our economy relies on people buying stuff. Including, barely, the music we make.
WOW!
👍
I also see a Bricasti M7 AND an Eventide Eclipse V4. is there a reason for two reverb units? I'm not questioning the usage, I'm trying to learn.
Is this studio owned by a professional recording artist or a wealthy enthusiast? I'd guess an platinum level blues lawyer based on the amp collection but the control room looks like it has the bones of an awesome mixing space.
Carl asked that I nowt disclose the owner, they didn't want to be identified, it's their personal recording space in their home, not a commercial space. It is a professional entertainer! That's all I can say! Haha
Hi @MorbidManMusic as I said above, it is a professional, just not someone who wants to be identified. Many thanks Warren
@MorbidManMusic I've got no problems with a blues lawyer but experience informs choice. A recording artist or engineer might make choices in a home studio because of the gear and studios they've used over their career. A wealthy enthusiast will make choices from a different perspective. For me, I like knowing why someone chooses a piece of equipment and what it means to them. It gives insight to their taste personality.
What, no Bohemian Rhapsody? ^^
Haha I know! I did, just not captured on camera! Haha
Beautiful stuff I just have to believe it sounds amazing! The PZM's are a great idea too.
But"No one has ever done that before", re pistonic drivers. See Naim Mu-so.
Looked it up but didn't see any info on the feet. I guess what I should say is that no one has ever designed integral piston decouplers before in a professional monitor. Thank you for the clarification.
hey warren a random question. When u mix with headphones do u have them with flat frequency with a plugin or by natural or u mix knowing how our headphones sound
i could tell this man was a genius before he spoke, by how high he wore his shorts
.
Great video Warren, and I just wonder 2 things:
1-If you prefer Carl Tatz PhantomFocus room or ZR Acoustics - Delta H Design room??
2- and if is possible Carl Tatz could put this belt higher! :P
What would the speaker ensemble measurement null be in a 12x12 control room? Or is the minimum distance 67.5?
I believed I received an email from you about this and invited you to contact me via phone to help you out.
Carl Tatz I just now got this Notification. When would be a good time to call you? Thanks.
Will' these four guitars on opposite wall resonate?
Great video! What does Mr Tatz think of Abbey Road Studio 3 headphone monitors? Thanks
I'll have to ask him! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!!

Do those Speakers have ScanSpeak Tweeters built in?
Isn't that what the guy said?
Yes
Soooo...when are you gonna have your Studio "Tatz-ed", Warren? ;-)
Pretty sure he still needs all his organs, and i doubt selling any of his kids is an option either, so... Probably not anytime soon, i'd reckon :P

A couple times he says a section is "all 703". What is that product?
MLB player Ryan McGuire's studio there i said it! cool studio.
haha was wondering about that
Anybody know make/model of the office chair at the main desk?
Carl Tatz sells his own custom chairs to work with this system. Check out his website.
I was wondering about TV monitor...why not to use screen projector with white absorber panels, insted of reflecting screen surface that interfer with sound ? Did anyone try that solution ? Is it becouse its too dark or weak view or what ?
Projectors have fans, *AND* the lamps wear out in (maybe) a couple thousand hours. And yes, while they're nice for movies and whatnot, they're likely too blurry or fuzzy for reading text.
Projectors for that application have their own set of issues. If you tilt the screen 4 degrees it becomes a non-issue.
You should've listened to by new track "Polished Turds" which I mixed using my ear buds.
I want to hear some music from this studio, cause i don't like the studio because no diffuser on back wall and there is glass in 1st reflection point
One two one two one two one two 🗣️
I get tired of saying "Check, Check"...
4:57 That's why man invented mixing in the box. And in my case, the PC with it's desk is behind my back - I just make a quick turn on my swivel chair after pressing "play". 🤓
Clearly Carl is also a guitar player, and likely a damn fine one too.
I guess the nails gave me away...
Yes, and the level of care you put into them surely reflects your playing skill. One doesn't have nails like that to strum a Dime Store Ukulele.
Quite an eye... Email me your email address and I'll place you on the mailing list.
Shit. I've been thinking about everything the wrong way 😲
you should do a video on power conditioning
Why?
Khron's Cave idk some people don’t think it’s necessary some people swear by it. Haven’t seen many videos on the subject
@@peacecoast I wonder if and how many of those people (on both sides) did any A/B testing.
Myself, i'm on the skeptical side of things. And on the other hand, what exactly are the problems (you think) these might solve?
Khron's Cave might I might make an A/B video soon I’m also skeptical, but have a few in my possession right now
@@peacecoast Even more interesting would be to include some teardown photos.
But once again - at least in theory, they "should" be a solution to *A* problem, not some magical band-aid.
Then again, there's also people who'll try to sell you power cables or interconnects with four-figure prices...
Trying to focus on Mr Tatz and what he's saying while that console is sitting there - it might as well be a beautiful naked girl . . . a little distracting, shall we say! Inspiring room. Thx Warren. So I looked through the comments . . . there is no mention of what that console actually is. Pleeze tell!

Subwoofers in the corners of the room, right next to the walls? I watched a video in which a very respected engineer (i think it was Tony Andrews from Funktion One, not sure, though) was saying that placing the subwoofers in the corner of the room is a huge mistake that only a non-professional can do.
Well yeah, but these are magic mojo subwoofers which don't have that problem. [end of sarcasm]
That being said, corner-loading subwoofers does indeed provide up to +9dB of low end - not necessarily uniformly, though.
To me it looks like a basic RFZ design, with digital Eq, Crossover, and Driver Time Alignment doing the heavy lifting.
Actually it's quite different than that.
@@carltatzdesign thanks for replying Carl. Can you lend any insights into the tight phase coherence between drivers, and solving the 125hz dip. Or maybe some things that differentiate the room treatment from an RFZ? Im not trying to be a jerk, acoustics is a decade long interest of mine. I understand you cant reveal all your methods. Thanks sir.
I assume you mean the coherence between the sub system and the monitors. I can only say it's about selecting the right crossovers, points and slopes to get the phase to be as perfect as we're able to achieve with the PFS. As far as the approximate 125Hz dip, this is called the Alison Effect, named after the great Cambridge speaker designer Roy Alison in the early 70s. No one was talking about this in pro audio so I had to discover it myself and later found out that it wasn't the Tatz effect but someone else had already identified it. It's primarily due to the low frequency cancelation that occurs acoustically between the speaker on a stand and the floor - floor bounce. You'll find there are no exceptions to this. Hope this helps. BTW, a reflection-free zone design utilizes spayed walls. I design rectangular shoebox mix rooms that can be calculated mode-wise.
Email me your email address and I will put you on the newsletter list.
@@carltatzdesign i appreciate your time Carl, i joined the mailing list via the website, i hope thats the same as the newsletter. Cheers!

Lovely legs. 😆 Carl Tatz is never going down as a fashion icon, but I guess he knows audio.
Carl sounds like Albert Einstein...
Certainly, having nothing between the monitors makes sense to the imaging. That I understand. Have to move some gear. I'm re-listening to get a grasp on some of Carl's other excellent studio knowledge.
Looks just like my living room studio! (Not!)
Never heard Warren so quiet in a studio tour before! Sponging it all up.
The system looks amazing but to ask a video microphone to pick up the actual sound in the studio is pointless exercise. The initial demo sounded boxy and then the videographer changed position and the boxiness disappeared. In the end, most people are playing the music on average sound systems. Obviously this makes a big difference for music to movies but even then the mixing technicians botch the job and you find in most Hollywood movies is that all you hear is the sound track and barely the dialogue which is usually a mumble.
I think this gets a little bit out of control sometimes. Gorgeous studio. But the average Joe public would never hear what we hear in music. Nice system though.
I bet that if you let said turd dry out completely, then sand and polish... Just sayin'. I'll get my coat ;-)
I do not have to accept or like verything Warren presents to me. There is a lot of padding AND ego present in this room (Warren excepted)
What ever gave you that idea? :P Was it the "the forklift for this window cost $1800 for the day"?
The old man plays guitar
Kinda wierd that Warren never even mentions how that control room sounds.
He thinks pretty highly of himself, huh...?
