    Tip for rugs in the kitchen/dining - go for outdoor rated rugs can take a much more intense cleaning and are less likely to stain.

      I love those! I also get cheaper, low pile rugs for the kitchen. Mostly because I change my decor in the kitchen pretty often. Don't want to be stuck with an expensive rug for years.

And thank you for showing real-life kitchens, not "decorator" kitchens. Please expand on your faucet suggestions. Many of us have the type you recommended replacing.

    This is SO good, Garrett!!! I never would have thought of painting space above cabinets the same color as the cabinets! Such a great and cost-effective option for those who don't want or can't afford custom cabinets!!! I redid my kitchen a few years ago, and I had all the lower cabinets made with drawers. There are kits to retrofit existing cabinets with pull out shelves, and this is a great feature for individuals with disabilities who can't get down on the floor or to the back of a cabinet anymore. I LOVE your shelf solution for over that stove! It's great when you turn something that starts as a challenge into beautiful and functional design!!! 🤗🥰🤗 Colleen

    I had the problem of a stone floor with the heating vents. I painted them to blend with the stone on the floor. I spray painted the base and then sprayed different colors that were in the stone floor on to foil wrap and dabbed it on with a sponge and crumbled paper towels. It really looked good. I practiced on a piece of cardboard first.

    I have a tiny condo, of 450 sq feet and it came with a bar high counter that divided the living room from the kitchen. I bought the IKEA Kallax cabinets in white and put it in so it goes under the counter but leaving about 8 inches out from the overhang of the counter. Then I added doors, drawers and wine holders in each square of the Kallax. It gives me so much more room in the living area, and a much more practical use of space. It also hides so much clutter.

    Great idea on the bench, and the narrow shelf over the stove. I would suggest some glass doors on some cabinets to break up the stream of cabinet doors. And the location of paper towel holder in kitchen with the misfit refrigerator was odd. I have the tall bar between my kitchen and living room -- I find that like myself, visitors choose a lower chair when given the opportunity. LOVE seeing Linus!

    Thanks for your insights!! There are so many hard surfaces in kitchens that need softening. The kitchen with the round table, four chairs and two stools definitely needs fabric. Curtains in the bay window and seat cushions would liven up the space. I'd also try a rug beneath the dining set since the set matches the floor.

    Have always loved kitchen cabinets that extend to the ceiling and will do that in my next kitchen. That said, we do have a bulkhead and crown molding above ours so there isn't a space to keep clean.
    I am also happy that wood tones are becoming more popular again and am working to update my very solid but not particularly popular early 90s oak cupboards. Am happy that at least they don't have curved front panels so common to that era.
    Our two laundry room oak cabinets don't have a bulkhead above them. To extend the cabinet color to draw the eye upward I have shallow rectangular wicker baskets that are pretty but simple, the same color as the oak, and almost the depth and width of the cabinets, one over each. In that way the color extends almost to the ceiling. In general I am not a fan of "stuff" (fake plants, cutesy signs or baskets) between cupboard tops and the ceiling, but this works!

    My old house that I lived in for 22 years and moved out of 3 years ago, had cabinets that didn't go to the top. The amount of grease collecting on top was horrific! Bring a false front so the area above the cabinets is flush and there isn't a shelf for the grease to settle and collect. Also, that one hood looked like it didn't vent to the outside, only circulated air with a filter to catch grease. Always have a hood that vents to the outside. As for curtains, even a half cafe curtain in a simple linen and no design or minimal graphic with an accent color would work.

    Our kitchen was "done" in 2014. We bought the house in 2015. The cabinets are amazing. Very high quality, just really nice. For some reason, the original owner splurged on the cabinets, but then put in formica countertops & a builder grade sink & faucet. So in 2022, we put in quartz countertops, a tile backsplash, new sink & faucet. It was still $$$, but the kitchen looks amazing now. I also switched out all the cabinet hardware to a less bulky look. Just switching out the door handles made a huge difference.

    Great video, as always, Garrett. Thank you. I loathe bar height stools - if a restaurant only has bar seating available, I leave. I’m not that keen on counter stools, either, even though my basement kitchen has them. In our new build, we attached a 4’ x 4’ table-height slab to the back of our kitchen island. The stone is the same as that of the island counter top. I had a steel pedestal base fabricated and powder-coated in oil-rubbed bronze to match my cabinet hardware, faucets and light fixtures. Since the kitchen and family room are one, I bought four upholstered chairs with wood legs stained to match my family room end tables. The chairs fit perfectly under the table. Custom chair covers in red match my Viking wall oven and 48” range. My house has wood floors throughout, including the kitchen, over which are Persian runners. With their underpads, they’re comfortable to stand on for long periods, hide stains, and spot clean easily with Folex and a scrub brush. They get sent out for a professional shampoo when needed. I’ve found that guests are quick to make themselves at home around the kitchen table, which provdes lots of room for snacks and glasses. I’m able to work at the island and be part of the conversation. Everyone is far more comfortable sitting, rather than perching, and having a full table top is far better than only part of an island counter at which to sit. And there’s no need for a separate breakfast table. It is an excellent use of space, practical, convenient and helps connect the kitchen and family room. My love to your fur boys!

    ❤ the kitchen choices, they all were blank slates so we could really see the details vs a lot of decorative items in them. Another option on the painted light plates..if it’s patterned tile they have the plastic clip together plates that normally u put wallpaper in, take a photo of backslash and print photo on heavy stock and clip in to make an almost invisible match. Or even scan extra pieces of tile or stone for the plastic clip together light plates 😊

    In my past 2 kitchens I've had a small shelf right above the stove. They were the best thing we ever did. Currently, I don't have that option and I really miss the convenience of having my oils, sauces, etc right handy. From my experience I'd use a stainless steel or a painted (paint that you can wipe down) wood shelf that can be easily removed from the wall with hangers for easy cleaning.

    Great video as always, Garrett! Love this format.
    In the last kitchen, I would replace the hood with a flat, recessed hood in the bottom of the cabinet. Then that cabinet could be hinged down to the same level as the rest of the cabinets. That would give a nice even line to the upper cabinets. I would also do the same thing with the cabinet above the refrigerator, but you'd have to trim the height of it, which not everyone can or wants to do.

    Our kitchen has white cabinets, which are in good shape and functional for the layout. They have raised panel doors, and notches for your fingers on all doors and drawer fronts so that you can easily open them, instead of knobs or handles. Since the cabinetry didn't *need* to be replaced, but we wanted to update them somehow, we added cup pulls on all drawers (most base cabinets have deep drawers, so lots of cup pulls) and simple knobs on all doors, in a brushed silver tone. We love them. Also, we painted the island a dark green, and we had a dark grey silestone installed, which reminds us of soapstone but is less expensive and readily available.

    Good Morning Garrett,
    First of all, you look absolutely serene today😍
    The episode was very interesting and educative. Thank you!!
    I totally believe that before pulling down the whole kitchen, have a good research and a designer to brain storm your ideas, it really helps.
    When we moved in, I did cosmetic renovations by changing the panels of my cabinetry, the hardware, the kick boards, and of course the faucet. Being an open kitchen, I was very clear that the living room to dining to kitchen there has to be a smooth flow, a kind of continuation but still individually defined spaces.
    And oh what caught my attention : the oval dining table, it’s something that’s not much talked about, but it’s a beautiful shape and can create wonders at a window place like shown in the video:)
    And before I conclude, thank you so much cutesy Linus, you are so adorable.
    You have a wonderful week ahead Garrett!!

    Trim out the side of the island and maybe add corbels to both dress up and disguise bar stools.
    Draw visual interests to your bay window, it's the architectural highlight of the room

    So Linus is a Hoover, so cute. Great critique for kitchens. Thank you. I would love it if you could critique kitchens with flattering colours rather than the standard white, black, cream/off white or greys. I’m so tired of these colours. Can there be other inviting options?

    I removed the green ( 😞) granite countertops and put in soapstone countertops and slate subway tile backsplash. BUT I don’t like my raised panel full overlay maple veneer cabinets. The layout is fine, the cabinets are in fine shape. I’m toying with refacing or painting the cabinets. (We refaced the bath cabinets and they came out great.)

    Great information. I dislike the splash black that is the same as the counter whdn the backsplash is different. I also agree about the higher section of counter so that bar stools can be used. We just removed the one in our condo and I love the clean look even if I have to be sure and keep the kitchen neat.

    I'm always so surprised when contractors or designers don't recommend using schlüter pieces to hide the raw edges of tile.😯 Its makes a visual and tactile difference in the look of the finished tile, it just looks "complete" and "done". Not to mention that you dont snag anything on the raw edges near doors or hallways!! They're not expensive at all, around $15 for 8ft pieces, so its not like the reno price is an outlandish difference without it??? Get your schlüter pieces, guys!☺️

    Great video! I love faucets that are automatic, ours turns on when you put your hands under the spout and when you remove your hands it automatically shuts off the water. It also has an”eye” on the top that you run your hand over if you need the water to run longer. It’s so handy to have. Also I love your idea of a bench/banquette under that beautiful window. I wish we had a window like that in our breakfast room. By the way Linus has excellent taste in kitchen design I’m sure!

    Linus is adorable just like his brother! I actually prefer the open space above the cabinets...somehow, I'm not thrilled about the mouldings. How would you decorate or make use of that space? Thank you, Garrett!

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Год назад +1

      Remembering that area of the cabinet is a dust, and possible kitchen grease collector you have to consider that the debris will also get on whatever you place there. Some people have said they regularly place newspaper on the top of those type cabinets to make cleaning easier. It’s easy to decorate that area in a way that will ultimately look tacky and add a dated feeing to the kitchen. So, care and thought has to be given. If I had that type of cabinet I would probably leave it empty for a cleaner more current look or be very intentional with perhaps large ceramic serving pieces. I wouldn’t put anything that could be damaged by dust, debris or kitchen grease in the space above the cabinets.🐶🐶🐶

    I just recently renovated my kitchen, your videos were really helpful during my renovation process 🥰. I didn’t bring my cabinets up to the ceiling, because one I can’t reach, and second because older houses, the ceilings are not even so it would be more cost and work to fix for something I don’t need. Your advise to paint the space above with the same white colors makes sense. My “cheap” looking curve faucet (no so cheap in $$$) is functional, but do want to see if you have any recommendations. Love Linus the crumb licking 🐶.

    Hi Garrett!
    Love your videos! I just painted my wood cabinets white and love it. They are good quality but the stain looked orange! My kitchen was dark and the white brightens the kitchen up considerably. I do not have bulk head cabinets and have a pale yellow paint above the cabinets with white crown moulding that is the same color as my cabinets. I like your idea of painting above the cabinets but my kitchen is open concept and the color runs above the cabinets all the way to the family room There is no place to do a clean stop point and I think the crown moulding draws the eye up anyway! Thoughts?! Keep the great videos coming :)

    Why do some people don’t go all the way up to the ceiling with their cabinets ? it’s beyond me. Besides looking neat and pretty it’s also practical for cleanliness. Anyway, great advice.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Год назад +2

      Agreed! Unfortunately, these types of cabinets are more expensive and usually a builder upgrade if offered at all. Doing it after the fact is not always easy or inexpensive so I understand if people don't have ceiling height cabinets. They are definitely an elevated feature that also provides extra storage and an easier way to keep things clean, and of course seen in many high end kitchens of all styles.

    Houses coming with fridge is an American thing. Houses in Australia don't come with fridge, or washing machine /dryer, we own and move with our appliances.
    The only time you get a fridge is if it's integrated, usually in new buildings only.
    The only appliances that come with the house are the stove and possibly a dishwasher.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Год назад +1

      Some new homes come with a refrigerator, but the counter depth types are usually an upgrade or in a resale something you’d have to buy and than replace the existing refrigerator. Sometimes higher end homes will have them already, but not always.

    • @parisakamali345
      @parisakamali345 Год назад +1

      @GarrettLeChic we are building a new house, and the integrated option we were offered was too small and outdated. So even though it's a new house. I opted for have my stabs alone fridge, cause it has ice and water dispenser.
      My American friends were totally surprised houses didn't have things they took for granted 😐. Different cultures I guess

      The island with the stools....I wouldn't use it for seating at all. I think having people sitting there would be, I don't know, awkward or something. And I think those stools are too low. Children would be the most likely to sit at that island, and those stools are definitely too low for children to sit such that they could actually eat at there. I would also consider putting that microwave somewhere else. It doesn't need to be near the stove, and it takes up counterspace next to the stove which could be useful.
