Sad that you have to explain yourself. You are sharing and it is your prerogative what kind of life you choose. People should learn to respect that.

Before this video, I didn't have a feeling for how many olive trees you had, but now I see it's really a lot. You'll end up with literally tons of olives. That's amazing.

I admit that I was curious about Gina doing all the driving but I wouldn't dream of asking! I like looking at the comments on many of the videos I watch because a lot can often be learned or added to the info in the videos but I hadn't picked up on the "nosiness" or criticism. I'm a Stoic, or something - there must be some Greek philosophers who gave it a name a few thousand years ago - if somebody wants to tell me/the public something then they will. Or they want to keep it personal: don't ask. Patience is my motto. It is my impression that many newish vloggers pick up 'weirdos' after a year or so who ask strange questions or make highly inappropriate or deeply personal comments, often causing the vlogger to cease doing what they are doing. Sometimes it is cultural, sometimes it is pure nastiness, often it is hard to tell!
Please don't stop doing what you are doing!

Thanks Neil, I generally delete and block anything that's hateful or plain unwarranted negativity which is why you might not have seen them. I was getting some really rude private messages and comments too about being a male chauvinist pig who does nothing but force his wife to work while he drinks beer etc... pretty bizarre stuff. So yeah I just wanted to try to see if I could explain how filming works etc. We wont stop what we are doing, this is my record to look back on one day :)

Outstanding...you guys are awesome and thanks for talking to us but keep in mind that you do not owe anyone an explanation on nothing unless you bash my land or my people.
It is great to see you having a good friendship with your neighbors and hope your language barrier diminishes....I’ll revisit what I told some time ago, how important it is that you know your community and how your community knows you. How important it is that you know local customs. I know it is allot of stress on you and Gina, but you already made the first few moves.
Take good care of the people that help you and work with you, and in turn, they will take good care of you. There is a natural pleasure in giving and my people are not shy to give but they also like to be recognized.
Your friendships will be worth more than gold.....but be wise, always be wise.
We truly hope that you be very successful and never forget how much work it took to get there.
We sincerely wish we could visit with you all for Christmas and enjoy some beer or um vinho do Porto (a nice tawny port wine) and Bolo Rei (Kings Cake)....just because we are so proud of you and your effort.
We can’t get over how Mimosa gotten so big.......take care my good people!

Ignore the negative criticism and follow your intuition, if you’re sensible and thoughtful your intuition is often a good path.

This was interesting learning about how olives are harvested. Growing up we had an olive tree in the front yard that produced thousands of olives. Being kids, we just threw them at each other and stained our clothes. :). I am sad that we never processed them. Watching your videos is special because you are using the fruit that grows on your land. Cheers!

It is very lovely to have such kind neighbors. May I ask how you compensate them for their time? Do you pay them in oil, or cash, or trade of some kind, or do neighbors just help each other when it's needed?
Next season will they come again, or will they loan or rent you their tree shaker, or do they anticipate you getting your own?
(Curious about cultural expectations. We are planning to emigrate and there is so much to learn!)

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  3 года назад

Hi Joyce, yes we are very lucky to have them as neighbours and they are so lovely.
They are sheep dairy farmers and need a lot of grass to feed the flock. We let them grow grasses on our fields to feed their sheep and in return they help us with things like our olive and grape harvest.
We did of course also give them a portion of our olive oil and we are sharing our grapes together to make wine.

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  3 года назад +6

We submitted all of the paperwork about a month ago, they asked us for a few more documents as they try their best to find any loophole to force you to pay the import tax. For the last couple of weeks its been silent. We contacted the guy doing the paperwork for us and he says that during covid things are slow and we must just wait. We will see. If its unsuccessful we will drive it back to the UK and sell it over there. If you dont mind paying the import tax then the import process is very simple. Its only complicated when you try to do it free of import tax. I believe that next year they are scrapping the high import tax and it will be much cheaper.

Ken, thank you for the hard work during harvesting Olives and Gina for hard labour to loading pick up!
Great experience might be first time for you and getting so quickly at safe side could happen damages by upcoming rains tomorrow. Really it was tied schedule for you and Gina to manage harvesting machines or shakers or getting so good brotherly neighbours. Did they charge cost of machines and harvesting operation?
. Thank you for sharing the whole process in harvesting and filming!! Pls discuss also your yields per hectare in part 2 based on 45 kelos per plant.
Pls highlight also if there were insect and fungal damages that might have impacted on average yields. According to me plant spacing should be more closer that I found in Tunisia. So, you can plant more samplings next yrs.
Overall this video was lovely because every harvest is the end of an operation and it ends to mean profitability.
Pls keep up your great works in new life in pleasant Portugal Valley at Castelo Branco district🌻 and keep olives for viewers 😁who comes to see your Farm🌷

Hi, Ken and Gina. You know how to shoot a video. Really good.
In Portugal we say when you don't know nothing, you have two options in life; 1st you become a critic , 2nd ... this option, I will not tell you , but if you ask arround and about you'll get the information.
Critics after passing all the exams, which is an easy part of the process, they will become
    "Experts" .
So I'll not be surprised if they will critise with an expert eye the method of extracting the oil from the olives used by generations after generations through the centuries . Just wait you'll see.
    Thanks stay safe .
    All the best.

We dont know yet. The oil should be ready in a couple of weeks as the oil press have a huge amount to work through from all the surrounding farms. I dont think that its worth very much money here as almost everyone has olive trees but it will bring in something. Eating olives are worth more but there is more work involved in that. We should find out soon the result and I will share it with the channel viewers :)

    • @CanalTremocos

Presses vary their cut every year but you should get back in oil 10% of your olives clean weight after they take leaves and minnows out. Around €400/TON. That team of 6 people and 2 machines made .. 2 tons .. in a day? It's just a hobby.

Sometimes if I feel an attack coming on I'll hurry up and pop a piece of the candy in my mouth and I can prevent an attack. I use the red and white Brach's starlight mints. Unfortunately not as they contain a very bitter chemical called Oleuropein to fend off animals and bugs from eating them. You need to cure them for a few weeks in a brine solution of pickling salt and water. This leeches out the oleuropein and makes them more palatable.
