  • We've assembled the Triple Threat of Brownells Gun Techs - Caleb, Keith and Steve - to tell us about their favorite cartridges and handloads for them. Caleb favors the 9mm Luger (9mm Parabellum, 9x19mm) loaded with a 124 grain Federal Hydra-Shok bullet. His rifle round of choice is the 6.5 Grendel with a 123 grain Hornady SST bullet motivated by Reloder 10x. The Grendel fits the standard .223/5.56 AR-15 platform, yet outperforms 7.62x51 NATO in certain circumstances! Keith's favorites: the .300 Blackout with a 185 grain subsonic bullet for sound-suppressed shooting; the .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 NATO with a 168 grain bullet and Lake City brass; and what he calls the "Real Six Five" - the 6.5x55mm Swedish (aka 6.5 Swede) with a 140 grain Lapua bullet. It was the Swedish military's cartridge for a century, and it's also excellent for hunting game as large as moose and reindeer. Steve loves the .44 Special with a 245 grain Elmer Keith wadcutter powered by Alliant Unique, and a .357 Magnum loaded with either the Lyman 358439 or Keith cast hollowpoint driven by a healthy dose of Alliant 2400. On the rifle side, he favors two lever action rounds: the Winchester .30-30 and .32 Special with 150 and 170 grain bullets, respectively, and powered by IMR 3031 have more than enough oomph to bring home some venison.

My favorite handgun cartridge is the old and neglected 38 Special. For versatility and real-world effectiveness it's still a contender. From light wadcutter loads to +P pressure loads with bullets ranging from 125-158 grains there aren't many realistic situations the old revolver queen won't handle. Even with higher pressure loads it has a wonderful recoil impulse, and it is one of the most accurate straight wall cartridges ever designed. Most of us don't have to worry about big bears and PCP crazed 300lb hulks, and down here in the real world the old 38 Special shines. In perilous times such as these when damn near every caliber flies off the shelf as soon as it's unpacked at exorbitant prices, most people overlook the 38 Special, leaving plenty of ammo available for those of us with taste and refinement. There's not a man or beast alive (or dead) that could ever tell the difference in being shot with a 38 Special or 9mm Luger. Given that the revolver is the 38 Special's only real handgun platform, the 9mm in an automatic just can't match the 38 Special in the range of loads you can field reliably. I don't advocate that the 38 Special has a place in modern policing or military applications, I know her limits. However, in the field, the nightstand, or waistband of a citizen she's better now than ever with the myriad of ammo choices available to the modern shooter of this grand old design. Here's to the 38 Special. One of, if not the most, versatile and realistic centerfire cartridges ever designed.

That means when I need 6 boxes, they almost always come from Brownells. Always first rate products and service delivered to this long time customer, never a bad experience! I don't see how the two guys my age didn't work in a 30-06; so please let me include 30-06, Hornady 150 or 165 Interlock with not so secret charges of IMR 4064. 44 WCF is my favorite. Loaded with 200 grain conventionally lubed hard cast bullets and a dose of Red Dot, or with hand cast "big lube" bullets and home made black powder lube, and a full case of FFFg. It's my all time favorite centerfire round, and I have 4 revolvers and 5 rifles in that cartridge, including an original 1873 Winchester that was made in 1879.

Thank you, gentlemen, this was a very worthwhile and enjoyable video. I was pleased to see a few revolver “favorite cartridges.” Yes, there are fine reasons to favor autoloaders, BUT often we only consider “better” instead of “proven to be entirely adequate.” I no longer reload, but six 158 grain, top-rated JHPs, fired from a five-inch barrel Smith 27 (or 627), chambered in .357 magnum will easily handle ANY task I am ever even-unlikely to have.

Mine has to be the .357 with a 125gn Hornady JHP. I sit it on top of enough ADI AR2205 (NZ equivalent to H4227) to just give it 2,000ft/sec from a 16" lever carbine and that's plenty for bush deer at 100 yards or more. Nice and flat, a bit messy up close, but you can pick your placement better at shorter ranges and it solves over-penetration!
Handgun is mostly for SAS, so max limit AP50 (no US equiv) gives a 158gn 2R cast Lee 750ft/sec from a 4.25" barrel. For long range pistol I take the same bullet to 1080ft/sec with a max load of our local equivalent of Universal. Works dandy in the lever gun too at 1280ft/sec (say what you like about Rossi but they're safe with LRN projectiles) .
Still working on the .308 rifle load. Probably a 150gn Hornady Interlok SP at around 2,800ft/sec but I'm trying to match trajectory with a cheap local 148gn FMJ that I use for service rifle competition out to 200yd.

A 6.5 Grendel is only better at a 1000 yards because the other heavier bullets the 308/7.62 NATO shoots and they also have to have a higher BC. They are heavier and wider. This means the 308/7.62 NATO loses its speed faster. The ft lb and armor penetration is far better for the 7.62 NATO at all closer ranges by a huge magnitude. I know I'm about to piss some people off, but Caleb could put a insomniac to sleep.

I really hope people don't honestly believe 300 Blackout is optimized for less than 9" barrel. Please go watch a Mrgunsngear video on the round's velocity and barrel lengths. You'll be surprised..

Exactly my thoughts during this video. There is no cartridge that I know of that doesn’t benefit from a longer barrel other than primer only shots. 300 blk needs at minimum a 10” barrel to be equivalent to a 16” 5.56.

@Jeff Jeff I'd rather have a toilet seat made of solid gold, but that's not in the cards now is it?

“Optimized for a 8” barrel, anything past that you are t doing much more”... yeah that’s not how that works lol this fudd is spewing internet myths.
