    Disc minimalism is what is more important i think. Throwing fewer discs is usally what helps amateurs score way better. Too many choices leads to overthinking. Most of all courses require 6-8 different discs at most.

      Thats an interesting point, I guess there is still a difference between mold minimalism and disc minimalism. Even though I'm throwing less molds, I'm still throwing the same number of discs!

    Works for some, but I like trying to reduce slot overlap.
    Like bagging a mako3 and hex makes no sense.
    But I don't wanna try and find a beefy hex a normal hex and a flippy hex.
    I rather just go get a Pyro, Hex and Detour lol

    I like the channel name change! The Journey may be the Destination, but you're Andrew Wood! 😁
    Personally I aim for slot minimalism, and I only use what discs I need for them. The downside is that if a disc is lost during a round, I have to improvise, but I can always throw the disc 1 slot over, so I'm usually not in a bad spot in a round - unless I have too few discs to start out with! That said I usually have 20-24 with a few of those being utility discs, but I could easily play with a 10-disc lunchbox style bag on nearly all casual rounds - without feeling like I'm missing anything.

      Thanks man! I’ve been back and forth on it for a while and decided it just felt more genuine to me.
      I think that’s a good way to do it. Most rounds I play I only ever thrown half those discs at most anyways

  • @wreagin1

    I just try to stay under 19 discs in the bag. I throw pretty much 50/50 backhand and forehand and I have very different styles for each. I basically have half a bag for backhands and half a bag for forehands. I have a couple duplicates but most of my discs are individual molds and I throw most of my discs on the average round. I think it totally depends on how you throw and how you play. If you think a change will help, make a change. If you’re happy, keep in keepin on.

    Nice vid! I went from "20 discs / 16 molds" down to "12 discs / 10 molds" and it is working pretty good for me so far! just limited my DD's .... but this is just an experiment! over the course of year I have 3 different ways of loading my bag named "Tournament, Big Arm, Tiny Bag" ..... so it's depending what I'll need the day I'll go out ^^ maybe for a noodle arm amateur like me a little bit over the top but I enjoy the diversity of the game as well as different molds! At the end of the day it is what you made out of it! luv to the chat!

    Mold minimalism I think is key to success especially now that there’s so many manufacturers and so many molds that fly really similar to each other. I think every player already knows there’s really only a handful of molds they consistently throw. I’d say find the best workhorse mold for each general slot and then build around that. Like for me I enjoy using thunderbirds for that fairway/distance driver slot, a roc 3 for midranges, and an Invader for my putters. Everything else is really utility shot discs in my bag for the most part

  • @hiddenleaf414

    To each their own. But for me mold minimization doesn’t work. I have friends that do it but we bag the same number of discs. Whenever they lose one they are now on the hunt for a very specific run or shape of the one they lost. If I lose one I just go buy another stock version of the disc I already have. I can see it making more sense if he were to bag less discs but bagging the same amount any only choose very specific runs just seems counter intuitive.

    • @AndrewWoodDiscGolf
      @AndrewWoodDiscGolf  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yea that’s a good point. I realized even though I’m bagging less molds I am still carrying the same number of discs. And for example that pink flippy buzz I have, it’s the only flippy buzzz I own, so if I lost it I would probably have to put a different mold in the bag to fill that slot

    Minimial molds are great for most non touring pros. The last change I made to cut down to 8 molds was ditch the Felon and musket. I found powering down on the enforcer gave me a similar flight to the felon. Then a full power enforcer flex shots matched the Musket's hyzer flight. That enforcer fills 3 slots in 1 disc. Also going full trilogy limits mold options so the blame is on me and I need to make the disc work.

    • @inimitableminimalist
      @inimitableminimalist 11 месяцев назад +1

      yeah, I've learned a lot (and greatly simplified my bag) by learning to power up/down on throws. If I really rip my Pure, it flies a lot like the fuse, with a lightly understable finish. If I power down my Ghost (a clone of the 8x Roc mold made by Gateway) it flies like a Zone. If I power up and really rip on it, it flies like an Explorer. I've also learned a lot by throwing discs extremely low to the ground, so you don't get the fade at all. if you can't throw a 12 speed 400 feet, just throw it super low and get 200 yards dead straight out of it.
      It's cool to try out all kinds of molds. I still buy a lot of new discs and love throwing new plastic. But I've probably gotten more out of treating my favorite discs like I don't know their flight numbers, and just seeing what they can do, than chasing that perfect disc. I think it is good for longevity and avoiding injury, too. Learning to crank up/down on a few discs requires not throwing close to 100%, ever. Since I set my "regular" throw at about 60% of max power, then I have the freedom to crank up to 80% or crank down to 40% without a breakdown of form. Somebody who throws close to 100% every time can't crank up without injury, and can't crank down without it being awkward.

    • @jakemiller270
      @jakemiller270 11 месяцев назад

      @@inimitableminimalistLongevity also can be increased by carrying a lighter bag/less discs before we all turn to a carts due to age. Outside of health throwing softer with a faster disc(in my case the enforcer) allows me to hit a sharp turn in the woods with any miss hitting trees softer. If i power up on a felon and hit an early tree a nasty kick can happen more often. I am not an MPO player yet though and i get why players at that level carry more molds. Pro's never throw anhyzer in certain crosswinds so if I need to get that musket flight my flex enforcer option won't work in a right to left cross(lefty backhand).

      I’ve heard a couple people mention bagging only 1 company to help limit options and force them to throw a smaller bag. It’s a really interesting idea. I kind of like it.

  • @brianlopez253
    @brianlopez253 11 месяцев назад

    I used to carry 25 different molds and the only multiple I carried was a pair of putters. I always found myself using three or four discs in total so now I bag 21 discs but only 7 molds. I feel comfortable with each mold feel in my hand and I know which disc flies the shape I want, and no need to worry about which mold will fit the flight I’m trying to get. I think as a creator, mold minimalism isn’t something that you’d want to strive for since you entertain and a set bag with set discs aren’t entertaining. But I believe everyday joes and pros really benefit more from having a mold minimalism mentality.

  • @ericwalter2944
    @ericwalter2944 11 месяцев назад +1

    Boiling my bag down to eight molds has been the single best thing for my game to date (even more than form changes). Minimizing molds and only throwing what feels great in the hand produced a confidence and consistency that I couldn’t find.
    The reason is throwing fewer molds means you’re throwing those molds a lot more to cover more shots and thus creating muscle memory for angle control and for shot selection.
    Can’t recommend it enough.

      yeah, you can plan shots with your brain but you have to throw them with your body. In other sports, they use the same ball on every play and just throw it different. Asking the body to learn this complex matrix of different discs and throwing techniques is kinda unique to disc golf, as far as I know. even in ball golf, players arent' thinking "do I use my flippy 7 iron or my overstable 7 iron"

    Honestly minimizing your bag isn’t a huge need to force it but depending on the disc and brand you could make it very easy. I throw 3 different thunderbirds but I throw 4/5 different mids. What it comes down to is knowing your discs. Truly minimizing molds is the same thing as using different discs. So in the end it comes down to your confidence in the mold.

  • @remmer3380
    @remmer3380 11 месяцев назад +2

    Don't try to force mold minimalization, let it occur naturally. If you need a disc that flies a certain way, throw a disc that flies like that. I tried to force minimalism, and I would find myself forcing discs on lines they shouldn't be thrown on. I think beginners SHOULD throw a lot of different plastic. Play around, throw anything and everything, until you find what you like. Over time I think you'll naturally find the discs you like, and reach for every round. this process will eventually lead to mold minimalization as the discs you love to throw start to change. My most thrown discs are my fairways and control drivers, and I have it down to 3 molds, and that just kind of...happened.

      so true man! what I did last year was always leaving 2 experimental slots open for new discs or try out or comparism to other discs .... that helped a lot too! I broke down my bag this year to 10 molds / 12 discs just an experiment to start the year with ..... but we will see! after 3 years of playing I found some molds I will never miss again in my bag but other discs are still debatable .... ^^ but I know that its not the discs .... its my inconsistency ^^ greetings from overseas ... hope my english was okayish ^^

    I like the idea of mold minimalism but only do it for a few slots. I carry 22, 3 of them are wraiths in different stabilities and 3 are tombs in different plastics/stabilities.
    Carry what works for you. If you know how each disc flys for you then it’s not an issue. If you consistently feel like you’re choosing the wrong disc for the shot play a round with both discs to eliminate one.

    Also, finding a couple discs you can use for multiple distances and lines. Too many people try to throw the slowest speed possible on each hole. Using the same disc to throw a shot especially a hyzer line from 250-350 scores better. Throwing lets say a fairway driver softer for shorter shots leads to way more accuracy, instead of throwing a slower speed disc hard. Remember, nobody really cares what youre throwing and bagging in the end. Also, overstable 9 speed discs are the most overly misused discs. Very few experienced players need them at all. Use a more versatile overstable driver instead. No need to have a halo destroyer and 2 firebirds in the bag.

    • @AndrewWoodDiscGolf
      @AndrewWoodDiscGolf  11 месяцев назад

      Yea thats a good point, I think a lot of players (me included at times) almost have an ego thing about throwing slower discs farther, or not having to throw faster discs on longer holes. I thinbk you're right. I've heard Drew Gibson talk about being a big fan of down tempoing shots as well

    12 molds is minimized? I roll with 9, occasionally 10. And honestly, I could probably go down to 8 or 7 even. I don’t throw very far, so I don’t think I need a whole lot of options. I know what each of those discs will do and they complement my game.

    I disagree I think mold minimalism isn’t effective for someone who only plays once a week. Even if u play more then once a week but you play on courses that don’t really beat in your discs quickly and I f you throw over 350ft your gonna want different discs for different shots. For example my midrange slots I bag an md3, md1, and a midnight prowl. I don’t play enough for my md3 to start flipping like my md1 and I certainly don’t play enough to beat in my md1 to flip like my midnight prowl. Now I don’t think you should carry 50 discs but different things work for different people.

    • @trevorbuck2105
      @trevorbuck2105 11 месяцев назад +2

      This is my thought exactly. I would love to have a super beat in version of every disc instead of bagging an understable mold, but the reality is playing once or twice a week isn’t going to beat a disc in fast enough to make mold minimalism sustainable. Sure I may have 1 or 2 discs that are heavily seasoned, but if I was to lose that disc I wouldn’t be able to replace it for a long time. Instead I just try to eliminate any overlap in my bag and replace a disc if it starts to get too flippy.

    mold minimalization is crucial IMO. less grip changes causes less thinking and easier decision making. i would rather stay in my own lane of molds than continue trying new things that maybe a fad for me because of the newness. when i went 95% DGA 5% discraft it made a huge difference as the amount of molds is far less than discrafts and the prices are better and made by discraft still!

    It leads to the question how many discs in total you/me really need. Do we really need three Buzzes for a round?
    Every time I throw a one-disc-round I wonder if it's really necessary to carry all that weight? And, more important, to make all the choices. In my opinion, disc golf is a very mental game and the fewer choices I have, the more confident I feel.

    • @AndrewWoodDiscGolf
      @AndrewWoodDiscGolf  11 месяцев назад +2
