@@rebelliousben Joseph had a broken leg, Merritt took the sledgehammer (a tool he knew how to use well) and broke his leg, disabling him somewhere that Summer and the dogs couldn’t see (garage or office). After killing Joseph, killing Summer would have been easier, he hated her, he would just get her away from the kids or maybe use the kids as leverage. Once the adults were dead, he could have told the kids that they were going for a ride and drive them to the desert and killed them there. It started on Feb 4, and there might have been an intermediate place for the bodies or they went straight to the desert. However, he had at least one day to clean up the scene and logon to the Quickbooks account and start stealing, which he did within 24 hours of their death.

No court sentences a man to death lightly and all the evidence pointed to him. He's 100% guilty and he's only crying for himself. His life is now over and that is what's terrifying him. He's also terrified somebody will get to him in prison and that's why he's attempting to sow doubt in everyone's minds, especially other prisoners he'll have to live with. There was Mrs McStay’s ex-boyfriend, who sent her an email just months before the family’s disappearance telling the mother-of-two he’d “love her for ever.” He lived nearby and had been arrested for threatning a neighbour and her daughter.
There was the new husband of Mr McStay’s ex-wife, a man with a history of violence who’d allegedly threatened to “muzzle” Mrs McStay and beat up her husband.
And then there was another associate from Mr McStay’s work, the computer whiz who maintained the company website - a man who’d sent messages to MrMcStay essentially threatening to destroy the site and ruin the business. Two Shallow Graves also points to an advertisement allegedly placed by the same man to sell the water fountain business from under its rightful owner.
They didn't have any hard evidence just circumstantial.. it'd be really messed up to convict the wrong person for a horrific crime and the real killer be out living his best life ..

And don't forget that the internet guy sold the business, took over 50k AND confessed to someone that he did it. All the State had on Merritt was a cell tower ping and two canceled checks for less than 5k. His defense team and his wife didn't do him any favors either. His wife lied for no reason, one of his attorneys was out for a month, they didn't call the States expert who changed his mind during his review of the video the State hung their case on, and they decided against calling the woman who says the murderer confessed to because she was a junkie. While I get their reasons for thinking she could be a bad witness, it doesn't change the fact that he confessed to her and told her things only the murderer would know. His sister changed her testimony on the stand, his daughter was a joke. It's obvious that someone else killed this family and Merritt just checked all the boxes for the State. It was a horrible crime that they ignored at first so they had to deal with it swiftly once the family was found. I think an innocent man is on death row.

I’ve followed this case only recently since American Greed did an episode on it. Since then I have tried to read and watch as much as I can stomach. There is a comment under that video that someone wrote believing that the monster Charles Merritt was not in fact guilty, and would be able to win on appeal. For some reason that comment made me almost as sick as the vile words Mr. Merritt spewed in the statement this video shares. I could go on and on- the tears I’ve cried for this family, and the hate I feel for the evil that took them. I still quietly ask out: “why?”, “how could he?”, and “will he ever do the next right thing?”, “ will he ever beg for forgiveness?”. As messed up as this world can be, I still hold some faith in humanity. But then someone like Mr. Merritt comes along and again that faith is shaken to its core. To me, and I am no one special, nor am I any more knowledgeable than the next person on this case... but I do believe that Mr. Merritt is one of a few “men” who is NOT capable of anything that is good. He is completely devoid of the fortitude and the heart that it would take to rebuild himself from the soulless shell that he is onto a life of some meaning and purpose. Because the only way he could ever complete this journey, is to be given the gift of forgiveness at the end... a gift that can only be granted by the family of Joseph and Summer McStay.

I actually don't believe he did it. When the Family first went missing he's the one who called Joseph's brother to check on them and the brother refused to do it then their father asked the brother and he still refused until 9 days later because he said he thought they was on a 10 day vacation in Mexico without telling anyone. The police never treated the house as a crime scene and not only that but let the Mother and Brother clean the house with bleach. To me the crime with all the violence points to more of a personal murder not just killing for money. Also in a interview like a year before they found the bodies Michael said something like I expect them to be in shallow graves. This Country will doubt some suspects with more evidence against them but then turn around and demonize other suspects with less evidence against them.

He yelled to his wife/G friend to make sure to tell everyone that he was home with her on that night in question when cell phone indicates she tries to call him 5 times when he turn off his for more than 3 hours. He stole about 19000 a few days after their disappearance and call Quickbook from his cell phone while pretending to be Joseph to delete the phony check he made to himself .His cell phone also pings a few days later near the burial site. He was in jail before and must share some crack with 1 of his friend from the underworld to help him moved the SUV to the border. If you still believe in him, you are too naive and should be careful when hiring ex-criminal to do jobs for you. If you want this guy to be freed ,How about bringing back the dead?

I just find it hard to believe that 4 people got killed in that house and not one spot of blood and they were killed with a sledgehammer come on. Something isn’t right and they had to have been killed somewhere else and it had to be more than 1 person involved. I don’t think much of Chase he doesn’t seem trustworthy but a killer i don’t he is . I could be wrong but I watched this whole trial and tried to be objective because I thought he did it before it even started but no way if I was on that jury I would of held out. I’m not putting a man to death because he might have been on a highway passing through the area where the bodies were a couple days later. You got to show me he killed them not driving by the area. They never even tested the other DNA even the media questioned them about that. This story hasn’t been told in my opinion.

It’s beyond foolish to think that you would know how you would react, speak or behave if you were thrown into a similar situation. Unfortunately, proclaiming your innocence and leaving it as a “trust me bro” scenario would not have the monumental impact that you think it would have and that you’ve fabricated within your own mind. 🙄
