    I was diagnosed at 35 years old with hereditary Hemochromatosis. This was in 1995 when it took me 5 different doctors to finally tell me why i was so weak all the time. Back then you could NOT donate if you had a diagnoses of hemochromatosis now that has changed. The doctor told me to let my siblings and cousins know about my condition because it is hereditary. Well all my family laughed at me and only one of my sisters out of 3 got tested and was positive. The sad thing is my brother who was younger than me died at 40 years old from cirrhosis of the liver. He found out to late about his condition. I have lost 2 cousins 48 and 55 from the same thing. This is no joke and all men should get a test for this condition.Woman should test after they go thru menopause.

    I remember a tweet a few weeks ago from Dr. Rhonda Patrick stating that she read a study where rats or mice were phlebotomized and then infused with saline solution ( diluting the blood) and the study showed extended life outcomes. She related these findings to ones where these lab animals had their old blood replaced with the blood of younger animals with positive health comes observed. When I saw that I was thinking about iron overload being related with these interesting observations and results. It alone was enough for me to look into blood donation then. So glad I found your channel, Pim.

      Yes, turmeric does chelate iron. Same with cabbage juice, IP-6 [short term use is OK but not long term] and the iron antagonists namely, zinc and manganese. Curcumin + piperine is better than turmeric as they are more bioavailable.

    There is a genetic test for hemochromatosis. If you are homozygous for the gene then you got one gene from each parent and you need to watch your ferritin. You may not have the gene. It could be easier to get tested for the gene so you know whether or not you need to worry about your ferritin levels. My sister did research on this topic and tested me and I'm homozygous for hemochromatosis. This video is a good reminder for me as a postmenopausal female that I should get my ferritin levels checked with some regularity. Important thing for people to know about. My sister thought she invented the concept, but she didn't. LOL She likes to take credit for everything. People have been researching this for a while.

    My ferritin was 520 when I was 39 yrs old. I do not have hemochromatosis. I continued on the birth control pill for 13 years straight, keeping my menstrual bleeding low. I suspect I was insulin resistant back then, but showed no signs of gestational diabetes with either of my pregnancies. I went to see a couple different General Physicians specialist, who told me I had fatty liver and I should be more concerned about that than my ferritin levels. I had a fairly low fat high carb diet back then. Within 3 years my ferritin dropped to 134
    I have metabolic syndrome nearly 20 years later, and I have a heart calcium score of 54.6 in the LAD :(
    I'm on a low carb / high fat diet now. When I went off my diet for the first year of covid, my ferritin levels went back up to 522. They are slowly going down 8 months later to 417. I feel pretty worried after listening to this talk, I want them down faster. could this be the cause of my heart artery damage?
    And so I think women should get your ferritin levels checked well before menopause!

I missed my last 2 donations ( 3 monthly) and ferretin bounced to 200. Metabolic factors detoriated. From my experience over the last 3 years I would recommend keeping ferretin levels below 100. I just wanted to point out that metabolic dysfunction can definitely be present before the issues of iron overload. Metabolic disease is caused chronic sugar abuse . You don’t have to have iron overload to be metabolically ill. But high iron and hemochromatosis will definitely cause metabolic issues because the iron is being stored in your organs. Insulin resistance is the number one driver for liver fat and liver fat is the number one cause for metabolic disease.

    What is the most likely reason for a 254 ferritin point drop in 10 days?
    Lab error? Other? I didn't think it was possible for the body to dump that much ferritin in 10 days...unless... its not really iron overload.
    Background
    I recently had two ferritin level tests from two different labs. Ten days apart.
    1st lab - Labcorp - 8 am - 12 hr fast - ferritin:549, TIBC:232, Iron:106 Saturation: 45.7% RBC: 4.82
    2nd lab - Quest - 1 pm - no fast - ferritin:295, TIBC:250(calc), Iron:74 Saturation: 30%(calc) RBC: 4.80
    DNA test indicates I have no hemochromatosis.
    Background:
    69 yr. old male. Overweight and bad diet for 35 yrs. For the last 18 months I am doing LCHF, 18/6 IF, HIIT on a stair machine plus strength training. Dropped 47 lbs. Holding at 175 lbs for over a year. HOMA-IR: 0.79. I love meat but also eat 5% or more of my calories from vegetables. No sugar. No fruit. 13 gout flare ups in 15 years. Ferritin levels can be grossly misleading when assesing Iron overload.
    My numbers....
    Ferritin 86 (ref: 30-400)
    Iron 233 (ref: 38-169) HIGH
    UIBC 62 (ref: 111-343) LOW
    Iron saturation 79% (ref: 15% - 55%) EXTREMELY HIGH
    Given those numbers its a clear indication of iron overload.... but some practitioners would dismiss (as did mine) the significance of the iron load based solely on normal ferritin levels which is an extremely dangerous approach at assesing ones level of toxicity.
    Non transferrin bound iron (NTBI) ... which essentially is what it says, free iron or iron that is not bound to a ferritin protein is a much more toxic form of iron to be floating around in a person's body. Obviuosly ferritin matters in the overall scope of iron accumulation.... however it doesn't account for the toxic levels of iron that aren't bound to the ferritin protien. High iron and high saturation indicate a problem, and in some cases ferritin fails to reflect how much of a problem iron really is.

    I am confused so any advice would be appreciated. My GP ordered a ferritin blood test that came in at 288. He was a little concerned and arranged a repeat test 6 weeks later. This time my ferritin came in at 350. If ferritin accumulates slowly over time, how can i get a 62 point increase in my ferritin so quickly. I am worried but my GP was not concerned and dismissed any further tests. By the way my transferrin was 45%, i am fit and i do weight training and cardio but have muscle aches and lower pelvic belly / pain, this was the reason GP asked for this blood test. Any advice please on how ferritin can go up so much in so little time. Thank you

      STUDY:
      Conclusions
      Turmeric supplementation is increasingly common. Humans presenting with iron deficiency anemia should be queried about supplement use. The ability of turmeric to absorb intestinal iron may lead to it being useful in states of iron overload, such as hemochromatosis, or hemolytic anemias, such as sickle cell disease.

    Thanks very much to both of you for the interesting interview. I think there is important information missing, however. Where is the argument that high red meat is not problematic in this regard? Not only is red meat‘s iron about half heme-iron, but its also high in iron. To my knowledge the absorption of iron can only be regulated with non-heme-iron. Do you have any information about this? High unregulated iron intake would surely lead to overload. Observative data that says something like meat contributes only a small amount to iron in normal peoples diets is not translatable to a meat based diet, because quantity is vastly different.
    And to the other comment that claims people have seen their ferritin drop by a lot; that could also be because of lowered inflammation. In reality their iron might have actually risen, but acute immune response is way down.

    • @RadicalFoodFreedom
      @RadicalFoodFreedom  4 года назад +1

      Interesting points. I'd suggest you read his book to start with.
      What he and many other have experienced is that an all meat diet reduces ferritin. Most likely due to lower inflammation indeed. I'm not sure how high meat and red meat would differ in the uptake of iron? Do you suggest that the bacteria in high meat would affect this?
      If ferritin drops, how would one then store more iron? Yes there are other ways of storing iron, but not huge amounts of it.

      Yes, good. Ferritin is the storage. A systemic infection can cause your serum iron to be locked away in ferritin in an effort to correct the situation. Sort the infection out(not with antibiotics) and you will sort your iron issues out. Artemisinin is a great alternative.

    There is the idea that the optimal ferritin is 0. The body dont need any storage as we recycle iron and its not really eliminated. Its supposed to be in circulation and ceruloplasmin and copper is responsible for driving iron metabolism.

      Ive done a few blood donations and always feel better. Iron accumulate in tissues etc. Theres plenty. As long as we have enough retinol the body effectivly make new blood. There is also hemociderin, another protein that store much more than ferritin.

      This is just what my doctor at the Mayo Clinic told me....so take it as you will...ferritin levels are considered healthy at 11 to 300 for a female. However, if you are displaying symptoms of non-iron deficiency anemia then they want your ferritin between 45 to 70. My ferritin is 23 and I have been experiencing shortness of breath, extreme fatigue and hair loss. All other causes have been ruled out so my doctor is working with me to get my ferritin closer to 70.

    Meatrx had a few anecdotes (just for bart to do a voice impression of a certain someone) of people who turned their ferritin around purely by moving to a meat based diet, numbers like 1400 down to below 200 in about 8months etc. It seems less likely the intake but the outlet is constricted.

    • @nicmonberg5974
      @nicmonberg5974 4 года назад

      If they are claiming that by just changing diet made it drop from that high number to that low number it's a lie this is not possible you need to have blood loss or blood removed to do this also you can have IV medications but these are not recommended.

      @@RadicalFoodFreedom I believe the simplest way to look at this is that how does any metal on a low carb diet react? While not the same in most people many flush them out of their system, I know I end up having to suppliment with plenty of salt in my water. Kidney fanction would be my main bet on this. Are there any renal specialists you know that could answer something like that about iron perhaps?

    • @scottw2317
      @scottw2317 4 года назад +3

      @@RadicalFoodFreedom also is a related condition, hyperferritinemia, from a 2008 paper the conclusion was that liver steatosis and insulin resistance but not iron overload. The ferritin levels were believed to be directly related to the insulin resistance. (a close paraphrase of the conclusion) . Other papers point to a close relationship of fatty liver and this condition. My uneducated guess would be when the liver begins to go down the metabolic syndrome path this would affect the kidneys interrupting effective removal of excess iron.... part of this is the talk in most papers of this where phlebotomy also resulted in most symptoms of metabolic syndrome in these patients easing (but not gone).
