Roy was one of the great musicians of his generation. He was also a successful entertainer with an act that included a lot of corn-fed broad comedy. Because of that he never got the recognition from the muslical elite that he deserved.
Roy Clark was an amazing multi instrumentalist and was quite amazing on them all...this song you played was just a little part of his act...and yes comedy of the time on a Johnny Cash song.
Roy Clark did comic performances throughout his career. He is accomplished on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, as well singing. He earned legendary status in American Country Music, and was a mentor and consultant to many artists from various genres. 👍🏻
Roy Clark what great talent and amazing some people are just learning about him, plays the anjo also God knows what else. He is a one in a lifetime talent.
Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell was also an underrated guitarist. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.
Very true on Glen Campbell. Great musician, hugely influential, but since a lot of it was studio work, too few people know the full extent of his talent.
Tru dat. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, if it had strings and a box he was a maestro. Accomplished singer, comedian, actor and all-around entertainer, and forever and always, just a regular guy, and a good ol' boy.
This was a comic show called He Haw that he did with Buck Owen's weekly for years in the 60's and 70's. But he was a guitar virtualoso. I saw him do more with a guitar than anyone else.
Roy Clark was literally God's gift to music. He could not only play any instrument known to mankind, but he plays it as if it were part of his soul. Love him.
15 years old when this song came out. My best friend Eddie and I would howl out this song like we had already experienced all the heartbreak and disappointment this world could throw at us! 52 years later Eddie and I have lost touch with one another. I hope Eddie still sings this song as I do with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face remembering and laughing at our youth.
Roy was the star of a country comedy show called "Hee Haw" This his tongue-In-Cheek cover of a Johnny Cash hit. Johnny made a record of a concert he did for the inmates at Folsum Prison.
The Cash version (original at Folsom Prison) is so serious that it required Roy's lightheartedness. Once you hear Johnny Cash sing this, you have to listen to some Janis or Grace Slick to recover. Folsom Prison Blues is a heavy song. Maybe you could follow it with A Boy Named Sue.
Roy Clark was truly one of a kind..I can't think of any modern day guitarist that can do what he use to do with a guitar...And he could sing too. He has a unique voice that's easily recognizable...If you haven't done it already, you should check out his ' Yesterday when I was young '...That is one of my favorite of Roy...Great reaction my friend..Cheers..
I remember watching Hee Haw as a young kid with my Grandparents. Roy and Buck were always my favorite and one reason I wanted to play the guitar. He was a virtuoso and a great comedian.
Keep doing what you are doing Hari. Roy Clark played with A guy named Buc Owen's. Hee haw. They are great together also. One of The best musicians ever. ROY CLARK
Roy Clark on the Johnny Carson show said Chet Atkins asked him to play two songs at once…. Chet played Yankee Doodle and Dixie at the same time. Roy Clark said it took him awhile to figure it out but he played it for Johnny. Memorable to this day…
When I grew up my father loved Hee Haw, for which Roy Clarke was one of the stars. Got to see him every week and he was positively hilarious, as well as being a phenomenal musician.
If you haven't seen it, look for his rendition of Ghost Riders in the Sky, specifically the rendition with Glenn Campbell, another phenomenal guitarist. Alex
Yesterday when I was young is a fantastic song by Roy Clark in 1973 he was selected as the Entertainer of the Year he he was honoured many times and I think he got a Lifetime Achievement Award damn he was good I loved him on Hee Haw
Multitalented on so many instruments!! Listen to duet of Orange Blossom special! Roy plays the violin while YoungBoy plays the banjo with him!! Their interaction is hysterical! Fun reaction!!
Thanks, Harri - yes, Roy was a comedian! he was very self-deprecating and generous to other musicians - a total genius on stringed instruments of all kinds -- I remember him from goofy TV appearances when I was a child, but only came to know more of his true abilities when I was much older!
Roy was a remarkable musician and entertainer! Really, no one was like him. While I was "rocker" back in the day, I had nothing but admiration for all of his amazing skills!
Roy Clark was both a consummate musician and a natural comedian; I had the privilege of seeing him perform live more than once, long ago. He literally gave the same respect to the rain-soaked farmers at the Athens Texas Black-eyed Pea Festival (not kidding, it's a Thing) that he gave to his fancy audience in Las Vegas, and I'm saying this from experience. He was an amazing professional who had real respect for his fans, Lord rest him.
One of the reasons why Roy Clark was a beloved entertainer was though he took his music serious but not himself. Another country music star from the past who was a very good musician and a top notch humorist was Mel Tillis. Mel had a stutter when he talked and instead of being self conscious about it he made it a comedy part of his act and he was hilarious. Definitely worth checking Mel Tillis out. A song that Roy performs where he show his guitar chops is a popular song called “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”.
i love all these reaction videos, people that never got to experience this live on the air get to share in the joy this brought to me as a kid, this and so many other artists.
I’m glad that you’re digging Roy Clark, he could play anything with strings & do it very well. I was hoping someone would see the genius he brings & give him a shot. Just knew folks, aside from us, that would do a double take. He deserves this much. Thanks Harri
"A Harlem Globetrotter guitar player." Yeah you do that when your SO GOOD at guitar that regular playing is boring and no longer a challenge. That man is a GOAT. (I don't listen to country music but I know talent and I hear all the people who praise and mention artists like him and Roy Clark and Johnny Cash, plus I've seen them here and there growing up, never went crazy over them but got my respect, and more so now that I'm older.)
Roy was one of the top 100 guitar artists of all time. He played above the pack in comedy, country, jazz rock and roll, the blues, bluegrass, folk and classical.
He is one of the greatest guitarist ever. He also lays banjo and fiddles. The show he was on for 25 years was Hee Haw, a country music and comedy show.
Roy Clark was the undisputed MASTER......And when you're this good, you don't have to take yourself seriously. Do whatever you like and the audience will love you for it. Mr. Clark is gone now..........But, he left us with a whole world of good music, and the memory of a good, good man.
Roy Clark had that raw natural talent many can only dream of. If it had strings he knew how to play it. HeeHaw was a laid back korny country show so there was lots of fun going on. But often during the season they would do a feature piece on some good old country playing with no korn in the mix. It was a great show to grow up with. I miss it.
Roy Clark, the Harlem Globetrotter of guitar. I love that! 🤣 He was such a fluid guitarist. Without an actual ‘style’, he could play ANYthing and play it amazing skill. I’ve heard him play everything from bluegrass to classical, flamenco to country. He could simply become one with his instrument.
Roy Clark is so underrated if had strings he mastered it , there are videos of him guitar, banjo, and violin (fiddle) and he is amazing but as you can see he loved to entertain and make people laugh as well.
My favorite album, Roy Clark Live makes all kinds of jokes between and during songs, and he makes sound effects in much of the songs. He does it on the fiddle too, making train sounds and even a bird.
Between Roy Clark, Buck Owens and all the legendary guests on Hee Haw over the years "Pickin and Grinnin" became cemented in American music history. If you've never seen or heard them you are truly missing out on one of the driving forces that helped bring country music what it is today.
He used to be in a country comedy show called Hee-Haw. He can sing play many instruments, do comedy and act. He may have passed on by now, I saw his act in reruns. Listen to Roy Clark and Buck Owens together, they are amazing.
Roy rose to fame at a time when the "Variety Show: was king of the airways (both radio and TV). He was a master entertainer even without an instrument in his hands.....
Best guitar picking banjo picking fiddle picking that ever lived way underrated it has been a long time though I still say he's better than anyone out there to this day
Roy was a master of the guitar, a wonderful entertainer and clown in the very best sense.
Roy Clark is so funny. He also plays banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, and others.
Roy was one of the great musicians of his generation. He was also a successful entertainer with an act that included a lot of corn-fed broad comedy. Because of that he never got the recognition from the muslical elite that he deserved.
Roy Clark was an amazing multi instrumentalist and was quite amazing on them all...this song you played was just a little part of his act...and yes comedy of the time on a Johnny Cash song.
i grew up watching him on TV as a kid..... loved him, hed keep my attention for hours... thankyou for sharing this with your great commentary
Roy Clark did comic performances throughout his career. He is accomplished on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, as well singing. He earned legendary status in American Country Music, and was a mentor and consultant to many artists from various genres. 👍🏻
dont forget banjo
@@TheGoldbaxter - I didn’t, I listed it right after guitar. 🎸🪕🎻👍🏻
Kinda like that thar Jim Stafford feller guy over yonder on that place over thar.
The man could probably play a tennis racket and have it sound good.
Roy makes me sick. It seems there isn't an instrument he can't play.
He was a regular on the show call "Hee Haw" I used to watch it every night when I was a child...good times....
His Dueling Banjos with Buck Trent is amazing!
I was never that familiar with him but I’m seeing now how great he was
Very true on Glen Campbell. Great musician, hugely influential, but since a lot of it was studio work, too few people know the full extent of his talent.
Look for a video of him playing "dualing banjos" his banjo pickin' is LEGENDARY!
To appreciate what a great musican Roy is Listen to him with Glen Campbell playing Ghost Riders In The Sky.
Roy was an absolute virtuoso. If the instrument had a string he could play it, and he had the talent to bring into musical form anything he imagined.
Never thought I'd see a humorous version of that song. He was smart enough to not copy Johnny Cash's more serious version. Thank you!
Roy Clark was literally God's gift to music. He could not only play any instrument known to mankind, but he plays it as if it were part of his soul. Love him.
Roy Clark to this day is highly respected by our guitar heroes. Such a great talent. I learned of Roy watching Hee Haw as a kid. 👍👍
Yesterday When I Was Young, written and sung by Roy is beautiful!
Yes it is, but it was written by Charles Aznavour.
I just adore this song, Yesterday When I was Young.
I don't think I know it! I'm going to go check it out! Thank you!
Roy Clark is one of the best. He could play anything with strings on it and he could play any style from country to classical.
Yesterday when I was young......................there will never be another Roy Clark
Roy Clark is a legend…. One of the greatest guitarists ever
Roy Clark is highly underrated, one of the best, American icon.
The man truly was one of the greatest all-around performers of all time. I don't know if we'll ever have another Roy Clark
Roy was the star of a country comedy show called "Hee Haw" This his tongue-In-Cheek cover of a Johnny Cash hit. Johnny made a record of a concert he did for the inmates at Folsum Prison.
Hi Mr. Harri, check out some Hee Haw episodes just for yourself.. ♠W.G.
Johnny would call my uncle for his rides when he was in town ,miss them both .Earnest Tubb would throw some awesome parties in them days
I have the whole collection!!❤
I don’t know if you have heard the original version of this song by Johnny Cash but it is a must. The Cash version is much more serious.
Love the Cash version
The Cash version (original at Folsom Prison) is so serious that it required Roy's lightheartedness. Once you hear Johnny Cash sing this, you have to listen to some Janis or Grace Slick to recover. Folsom Prison Blues is a heavy song. Maybe you could follow it with A Boy Named Sue.
Well no shit
Roy Clark was an absolute master of the guitar, but he was so much more! Just keep looking for his performances, you won’t be disappointed!
I used to watch him all the time when I was a kid... serious music, funny too, and lots of talent, LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So talented that he can do amazingly difficult things on the guitar and crack jokes while doing it.

Roy Was a Star! Met him in Branson in 84. Saw him play a Les Paul special.🤠🇬🇧🇺🇸✌️🐎🥯
Roy was an accomplished musician but he loved to have fun, too, and we loved watching him.
Lots of instrumentals by Clark but his comedy was so sharp that it rises to greatness along with his musicianship and pure skill.
When I grew up my father loved Hee Haw, for which Roy Clarke was one of the stars. Got to see him every week and he was positively hilarious, as well as being a phenomenal musician.
Hee haw is still on and I watch it every week day

That was most likely performed on a weekly TV show known as “Hee Haw”. The song is Folsom Prison a song sung originally by the late Great Johnny Cash.
Roy was a remarkable musician and entertainer! Really, no one was like him. While I was "rocker" back in the day, I had nothing but admiration for all of his amazing skills!
Roy was a fantastic musician! He made it always look so easy. Huge talent. 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
Roy Clark the number 1 reason everyone think guitar is easy .
He makes it look easy .

Yes, keep listening to more Roy Clark! He can "saw a mean fiddle", pick a KICKIN' BANJO; pluck sweet mandolin & THAT'S "just for starters"!!
Roy Clark is a Master with many talents.. as many others have pointed out..
You need to hear his duet with glen Campbell, ghost riders in the sky, that is a wonderful guitar duet, absolutely fantastic, hard,!!!!!
Jerry Reed was another country boy who could play guitar. Check out one of the clips of him playing "Guitar Man".
This man was born to play. A professional musician who always seemed to be having a good time. Makes you smile.

I read somewhere that Jimi Hendrix was asked how it felt to be the greatest guitar player of all time and he answered “I don’t know; ask Roy Clark”.
Roy Clark was a legend he could play with it because he was that good
I'd also suggest Thank God and Greyhound. He is an amazing musician.
Just an indication of how good he was...that he could goof around, use other props, and still make good music.
Love it, the Harlem Globetrotter of guitar players! Perfect.
