Watching these video's over the past few months has inspired me to buy a camera and start exploring - got fed up of wasting my life playing video games - cannot thanks Henry enough
After experiencing another horrible fire season in Oregon, my fiancée and I decided that we would get through one more winter on the west coast and then go back east where we both grew up. We decided to take a long, winding trip through the American Southwest on our way, and got to see so many national parks, state parks, and the wide open road. After spending the entire pandemic playing video games and watching stuff on youtube, it felt so good to be out in the wild experiencing real things, seeing new places I may never get back to again. I still get emotional thinking about all that we saw and did. The world truly is too beautiful to spend our lives inside.
You are on a true adventure when it puts you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The landscape, the rain, the vegetation are beautiful. I am happy to see are doing well with shin problems, I was concerned. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Cheers Glen thank you very much. Yes I agree when things get so real like they did it really is why people do this I think. Yes the leg wasn’t too bad by the end of it, I think there was a couple of days in the middle of the West Highland Way that I was probably battling through the pain a little bit. Thank you very much for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment. Cheers.
Wow what an adventure, thanks for sharing. You have brightened up my morning here in Adelaide. I am heading to Scotland next we and plan to be up Loch Lomond next Wednesday... can't wait. Loved the pic of the river too!
Great video well presented and clearly spoke also I like it at 13 mins what a handsome chap, can't wait for the next one, takes me back , it was a pleasure to walk with you , and yes the day before was so wet and to get to tyndrum and campsites all closed, oh well it's all experience ... If anybody watching this feels it might be too much.. It's a fantastic walk , people you meet and you don't have to do it in 6 - 8 days . Loved every minute of it
Ariel alejandro Giesler Thank you very much, yes it was an awesome leg of the West Highland Way and I’m pretty happy with the photograph I managed to get that morning! Cheers.
Blimey...went up and down with you watching that video! Well done for pushing through...hate being wet when walking! Looking forwards to next part of adventure....go guy! 👍
Well impressed that you you continued to film and photograph in such inclement conditions. When out in weather like this I struggle to just get the camera out of my pack.
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment. Yes I think it’s very true in these instances when the emotions just come out whether you like it or not! I really do recommend it it was an incredible experience. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it.

shootNbreeze Thanks very much yes there is definitely a lot of honesty about this blog! Thanks ever so much for watching cheers for the comment as always
Well done Henry just as well that skin is waterproof hard to keep the spirits up in those conditions but you nailed it great vlog one thing I didn't hear you mention was the dreaded Midgies hope you at least got away with that one hope you got the weather for the last part of your walk looking forward to part 3
ALEX GOODFELLOW Thank you very much. Yes it was really difficult to keep the spirits up you’re right, but I was continuously rewarded by the West Highland Way for pulling through the difficult times, it was actually a really good life lesson! Funnily enough there was actually not many midgies on this trip I think it was perhaps a little bit late in summer, so that was definitely one positive about the conditions! Thanks a lot for watching Alex much appreciated.
What an amazing journey so far. Watched during my lunch break. The perfect respite.... Be safe, and the landscape thus far is truly tranquil. Coming from this Chicago big city native, where you are is a tremendously relaxing and chaos free setting. 💕
Thank you very much for the comment and I’m really glad you’re enjoying the journey! The landscape was absolutely beautiful and it really was an honour to be amongst it all. Thanks again!
I like your video coz hiking WHW is one of my favorite hiking. I am a South Korean. So this kind of info is valuable for my future hiking. Thank you very much for uploading these two videos.
Loved it again Henry . Even though the conditions were starting to get you down , you kept going and regained your enthusiasm for the journey ahead . Looking forward to next week .
james wood Cheers James thanks for leaving a comment. Yes it was an interesting life lesson the West Highland Way, you really did have to pull yourself through the low points to experience the highpoints. Thanks again for watching much appreciated.
Showa Thank you very much. Yes I do really enjoy the rain (generally). But yeah just when it’s so persistent it makes it very difficult! Thank you very much for watching
Marvellous second episode. Not sure that I would want to carry masses of photographic gear whilst walking in Scotland because the weather can be so unpredictable and when it rains, its rains for sure! Wouldn't want to risk getting my gear wet. Also, I'm getting older and 25 / 30 pounds on my back is about my limit these days! Looking forward to episode 3 but that, I'm afraid, will have to wait until tomorrow as it's time for some shut eye!. Cheers.
Excellent video and well done on attchevment. Loved the still picture of water fall, stream and surroundings. Brilliant thanks for sharing. ATB Dave 😊👍 aka wackyswanderings big thumbs up from me 👍👍

Phil Chandler Cheers for the comment Phil. I’m really glad you got your calendar, that was actually much quicker than I’d anticipated, I hope all is well with it thanks again for the support it’s massively appreciated. Cheers.
I did the same over 5 days in September....same weather and same issue with the right shins 😂! It, eased off every now and again but on day 4 (Bridge of Orchy - Kinlochleven) and all the way to Fort William it was a killer! That walk down from the Devil's Staircase to Kinlochleven was absolutely relentless 😂!!
So impressed you carry all that camera gear with you. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the uploads from this series. I injured my IT band a couple weeks ago on WHW so couldn't finish. Currently healing up and getting inspired for the next attempt when I've recovered. Videos such as this one make me want to get back out there.
Thank you very much! Yes it was a wonderful adventure and a very real one at that. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it. Cheers.
Hi there, Just been watching one of your west highland way hikes, I must admit your clips are great, your emotions of almost feeling down or nearly defeated with our rain, but you bounce back into life again, that is absolutely Brilliant. I live in Scotland and I'm very close to the start of the west highland way, it's one of my small bucket list I would love to do before I head of to Nepal in November 2020 trekking the 3 high passes of the Himalayas. I'll be watching out for your next video clip. Many thanks Brian 👍
Hello there Brian thank you very much for watching mate and I’m delighted that you’re enjoying my journey. Yes it’s very difficult with the emotions so up-and-down, however, it really is so worth pushing through those negatives and receiving the wonderful reward the nature has to offer. Thanks again for taking the time to leave me a comment mate, and I’m loving the profile pic. Hail hail.
Great effort Henry keep going!.... its easy to get downcast in that kind of weather happens to us all mate, love that area know it well from my youth when I used to head up to Glencoe and Etive, Ft William and Ben Nevis. Magical part of Scotland.
Thanks a lot mate. Yes it’s very easily done when the rain is tumbling down and it’s difficult to keep the head up but I definitely got through it and I’m glad I did! Yeah it’s an absolutely incredible area it really is. Cheers for watching as always mate.
can i ask what you were using to siphon water into your cup and why? AT 2:26. i am looking to do a similar trip to this and now you got me worried about the water up here :P
Enjoyed this mate great journey you’re on shame about the rain literally dampening the spirits dig in there mate you’ve got this hope you make some great shots in the morning 📷📷✊️✊️❤️❤️
Thanks very much as always Paul, much appreciated. Yes the rain was expected really after all I was in Scotland. There was some testing times that for sure but so rewarding on the whole! Thanks again for watching make much appreciated.
Another great video! Have you looked at the Fife coastal pathway? It's nowhere near as physically demanding but just as rewarding! It's something I'd like to do next summer
try to get back up to rannoch moor during the winter.for me,the best time of year for landscape photography.if you get the sunrise and a snow covered moor, pure photographic bliss.how did you enjoy the wee amble up the devil's staircase in glencoe?
derek bell-jack Hi there Derek thanks a lot for your comment mate. Yes it’s definitely a location and I want to return to in winter it looks absolutely magical and the bleakness massively appeals to me. I tackle the Devil staircase in next week’s video mate I hope to see you then! Thanks again for the comment
Amazing journey Henry, got me thinking about the WHW next year. May invest in luggage transfer tho to take some of the weight off. Looking forward to part 3 and more photos.
Thanks very much Brian. Yes the luggage transfer looks like a fantastic option and there are a lot of people doing it. I think it’s definitely beneficial especially for us landscape photographers with all that extra weight! Thank you so much for watching mate and I’m really glad you’re enjoying the journey. Cheers.
Great journey so far, Henry !! Keep up the good spirit as they seemed to fade away for a moment. Hope your gear will last !! Really looking forward to part 3 !!
Thank you very much for the comment and I’m really glad you’re enjoying the journey. Yes it was getting more and more difficult with the rain I must admit! Thanks again for watching and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Cheers.
@@HenryTurnerphoto Maybe a tip for keeping some photogear dry. Put the lenses separately in a plastic bag which you can close (like the ones you use for liquids on a plane in your handbagage). Accompany them with some small silica gel bags and your good to go !!!
Wow, I just came back from the West Highland Way two weeks ago, and your vlog bring me right back there. I, too had the best moral-booster day in Tyndrum... After arriving there soaked and freezing, I first was sent away by the By The Way Campsite due to the soaked campground, but then I was lucky to find a B&B with a free room. Looking forward to part 3!
Martin Emrich Hello Martin thanks a lot for the comment mate. It sounds like we will probably there at a similar period.Yes I found the weather was a huge morale booster probably the biggest morale booster throughout my whole experience! Thank you very much for watching and thanks for leaving a comment much appreciated
Loved every second of this. I can totally relate to the feeling of being down trodden after being in damp or even wet gear all day, getting it dry just to have the gear wet again an hour after you started the next day's hike. Nothing worse than knowing you will be in that state or worse throughout the whole day or even the day after, haha 😄 but boy what a satisfaction when you finally make it to the end regardless! Looking very much forward to the next part of the whw series! Cheers Henry and thanks for uploading!
Tim562 Thank you very much Tim. Yes you’re right it definitely makes it all worth it when you reach the end or when you get the continuous rewards as you’re walking such a long hike like this! Thanks a lot for your insight and cheers for watching always appreciated
Great conclusion Henry, admire your enthusiasm, a bit of rain and Im looking out the window at home or sitting in my car wishing it was better weather and waiting for it to pass, hate getting myself or my gear wet although I know you can get some great moody shots in such weather, think it's time I invested in some good waterproofs 😁
pm69photography Thank you very much mate yes it was very difficult to be enthusiastic during some of the weather stages of the West Highland Way I must admit! I definitely agree what you said mate, if you can find that enthusiasm within yourself you really can get some magnificent shots in those conditions, especially in places like Scotland! Thanks as always mate.
I love your video work, you are really good at capturing the journey, it comes across really well and the music is lovely. What gear do you use for your video side of things?
Thanks a lot for the comment Philip. Yes I think to be honest I should probably take a little bit more care when I have my camera out in the rain. I think it’s because I know the camera body itself is weather sealed however the lenses are not. I guess my excuse in this case is I know my lenses aren’t overly expensive so I’m probably not as considerate as I should be! Thanks again for watching mate much appreciated.
I've been in Scotland for nearly 2 weeks, up from South Wales. I've been all over, North South East West, it's a silly thing to say but its vast and the bodies of water, incredible. I had lots of plans before I arrived but the sheer distance, and the roads themselves were a huge limiting factor. Nevertheless, its been awesome. My advice to anyone is limit yourself to say the Western or Eastern sides and concentrate your efforts. I tried to cram too much in, and had to give up on places because I physically couldn't drive the distances involved ( 6/7 hours a day ). So many hikers/cyclists with tents though, young and old, kudo to them. I'm enjoying your escapades Henry. Good luck.
Thank you very much for the comment and I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the adventure. I think you have given some really good advice, it’s always very tempting to cram as much in as possible but you’re definitely right it’s better to focus on small areas and try make the most of them. Thanks again for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment. Cheers.
Noealz - Rain Photographer It was very luscious indeed I suppose the incredible amount of rain is much appreciated by the plants and foliage ha ha! Thanks a lot for the comment mate
The harder something is the more you appreciate it when looking back - nevertheless I'm glad the weather improved for you! Top effort! Cheers T 🙂 PS - thanks for the Instagram like - very much appreciated
Tony Noble Thank you very much as always Tony, much appreciated yes it was definitely an improvement when the weather sorted itself out a little, a complete morale booster like I said! Thanks again mate
Henry that hobbit house was very unique, was it custom made or a mass produced item?... Also I’d always been under the impression that the UK, in fact most of the world besides the US used the metric system (kilometers, liters etc), are the two systems used side by side?
Yes we use both,UK never really got to grips with metric, nor had the inclination to either so both systems in use eg somethings packaged in tens but if sold unwrapped we will ask for a dozen or half dozen
Thank you very much for the comment Hugh. I’m not 100% sure if they are custom-made. They seem to become becoming more popular in various campsites around the UK, they definitely fantastic for what I needed them for! No, the UK uses the Imperial system, just like in the US, however I think a lot of the younger generation now tend to use both. Personally I prefer the metric system but I think that’s just because I lived for a while in Canada and New Zealand I’m just became so used to it! Thank you very much for your comment and cheers for watching.
Thus the UKs in the same situation the US is in. More than 40 years ago when I was in high school we were told we’d be changing over to the metric system and would need to learn “conversion formulas”. Well we’ve still not converted although the food, medical, automotive etc. fields have done so. I wonder if it’ll ever happen in my lifetime... Those camp structures would make a nice escape pod or office.
Buckets of rain surely sucks and lowers moral but this is a great adventure you will never forget, besides if it was all sunshine and rainbows it would be a fairly boring story to tell.
Joseph Cole Cheers for the comment Joseph. Yes it really was difficult with the rain I must admit but after getting through it I have some of the most incredible memories. I definitely agree with what you said if it was all perfect it wouldn’t be particularly interesting would it! Thank you very much and cheers for watching
Hi Cristian, I actually do have a poncho but I opted to leave it at home which was quite frustrating! But yes thanks for the suggestion and it will definitely be in the bag next time. Cheers for watching mate.
Hi Andy yes the weather was definitely expected I must admit! It definitely didn’t make it more bearable though ha ha. The train I had booked was about five weeks in advance so yes, I could’ve change the date however it would’ve been pretty expensive. Plus I kind of liked the challenge of making it in time for the Saturday! Thanks a lot for watching mate and cheers for leaving a comment, much appreciated. Cheers.

Cheers.
Feel like I can smell the Lush Green over here
Noealz - Rain Photographer It was very luscious indeed I suppose the incredible amount of rain is much appreciated by the plants and foliage ha ha! Thanks a lot for the comment mate

Those camp structures would make a nice escape pod or office.
song name just at the end ?
Loving Caliber - You Set my World on Fire
It’s that mysterious singer again🤔
Loving Caliber - You Set my World on Fire
Buckets of rain surely sucks and lowers moral but this is a great adventure you will never forget, besides if it was all sunshine and rainbows it would be a fairly boring story to tell.
Joseph Cole Cheers for the comment Joseph. Yes it really was difficult with the rain I must admit but after getting through it I have some of the most incredible memories. I definitely agree with what you said if it was all perfect it wouldn’t be particularly interesting would it! Thank you very much and cheers for watching
I think you need a poncho, it is just more comfortable.
Hi Cristian, I actually do have a poncho but I opted to leave it at home which was quite frustrating! But yes thanks for the suggestion and it will definitely be in the bag next time. Cheers for watching mate.
Could you not of changed your train to Sunday? Nice setting, shame about the weather but you are in Scotland... 👍
Cheers.
Part 2 👍 Now for part 1 🤔
Thanks a lot for watching Paul, really appreciate the support. Cheers!
