This video is absolutely amazing I am from Israel. I accidently landed here and now you Couse me to buy tickets to Glasgow and going to do it on may 25. Thanks so much for this detailed video. You succeed to vanish all my fears from a backpack tour in a far country
My wife and I watched your WHW videos before we took your advice hiked it full kit finishing 7 April 23 in eight days fortunately with mostly good weather, we watched the winter WHW with Scotlands Mountains and now having done the walk in relatively good weather we were amazed at your determination in those conditions. We are no spring chickens so many times we thought of giving up but for the encouragement of some great people we met along the way, we like watching your videos over again reminding us of the beautiful scenery of Scotland and how tough some sections were but that made it more rewarding. Thanks for videos 👍👍👍
Wow, so glad you completed the hike and a great achievement. At times my films and others don't show how hard it can be at times but glad it was of some help. Wishing you Atb
Ray, I really enjoyed your video. I love all the water & lush greenery along this trail. There is a long switchback in the Grand Canyon of Arizona called Devil's Staircase and another one called Jacob's Ladder, both are rather grueling. My father's family came to the U.S. in 1775 from Scotland & settled in Wilkes County, North Carolina. My wife & I visited Ireland many years ago on a business trip, but unfortunately we were unable to visit Scotland, perhaps one day. My dad served for 3 yrs. in World War II & was able to pass thru Scotland. He said he looked for our family's last name in the Glasgow phone book and there were 7 pages of Shores, apparently a very common name. However my middle name is Wallace, so I take some pride in that.
Absolutely stunning Ray. Beautifully filmed mate...however I think the Highland scenery made it easy for ya. I would to have a crack at this next year. Also just noticed the Renegade Scot is no more. Was that an easy decision to make?
Thanks 👍It was a great walk mate and really enjoyed it after all the lockdown. Hope you get the chance to give it a go as it is a great trip. Not easy on name and just doing a little test ;) Atb
I finished the WHW on the 6th of May , My 1st ever visit to Scotland and boy what a treat ! The trail is epic, scenery out of this world and the people made us feel very welcome , thank you Scotland, I now hold you dear to my heart 🏴🏴👍

I did the WHW back in 1983 when I was 18 with an old Vango Force 10 cotton orange tent.....before the days of lightweight gear. Could barely get my pack onto my back! Took me 10 days. Loved every minute. What a stunning walk it is. Was great to see it again. Fabulous film Ray. Many thanks.
I have mountain bikes from Tyndrum to Fort William. Got the train down the line from FW to Tyndrum then cycle N. Pushed up the Devils staircase. Great down hill reward.
What a captured moment that water spout was! I was looking at it thinking "what is that" and "I wonder if he noticed that" and then you mentioned it! Great video, thanks for sharing
I hiked it in april 2019, best hike I ever did. Scottish people are so friendly... I still miss Scotland on a regular basis and plan to re-hike it in 2022
I have to say Ray, I think this is the best RUclips account of the West Highland Way that I’ve seen (and I’ve watched plenty)🤣. The photography is superb and the editing on point. I’m itching to hike the second half of this trail before I reach and age where I can’t ! I’m also amazed you did it in that time factoring in all the extra ‘b-roll’ miles that you had to add on! I shall watch this again tonight on the big screen. 👍🏻👍🏻
We met towards the end of the Lairig before you head off to Glen Nevis. That last day turned out to be relatively warm and dry. I never tire of the stretch between Ft William and Kinlochleven. Invariably a treat though it has its off days too. Nice video. Nice to have net you in the flesh.
Although my walking days are over...I still love to follow you young lads on your treks...they are all good and brings a smile of contentment...thank you Ray.🎇🏕🏔💞😁🎇
This is the first time RS I have watched anybody walking the West Highland Way. Good Video enjoyed it, personally wish I had did the walk years ago when asked by mates but old father time catches up, so any youngsters watching if you get the chance get the bag on and do all these Scottish Hiking walks because after 40 time just fly's past. Forget busy modern working lives put a sick line in and go. LOL
A great piece of filming and editing. Thank you for taking the time to do this. A great inspiration to a middle aged fat bloke who now is going to be dusting off some gear and definately going to get out there!!
What a couple of years make. I did the WHW back in May 2018 had sunshine everyday. WHW was the highlight of my Lejog walk. The Kingshouse looks good, it was a building site back in 2018.
Loved this video, this was the first WHW video I watched, and just over a year later managed to do the walk myself, in late May, with pretty much the opposite weather as in the video, ie. totally no wind, beating sun, roasting heat, no rain, tons of midges and deer fly. Was also able to fit in a few other summit wildcamps after the WHW, needless to say I love hiking in Scotland and plan to return.
I was looking for Jimmy McGregor on the west Highland Way from the 80s. Can't seem to find anywhere I found your adventure instead and glad I did. Brilliant.
Fantastic mate. Watching your video brought back many happy memories of my walk of the WHW. I have to admit I didn't camp though...and given some of the weather I got, I was very, very happy not be camping. Good job on the editing of this one as well.....can't have been easy to compress all the footage I expect you had captured over the days. I'd very much like to do the WHW again.
Glad you enjoyed it. It was great to get out for a few good days and although weather was wild at times i think it is maybe the best time to hike in Scotland. Had a lot of footage and could have done several episodes but fancied trying something different. Hope you are keeping well. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors All good thanks mate. Good to see you out and about. I did the WHW in October, and we had all the weathers, but the colours of hills were just amazing. I was happy for a warm bed rather than a tent though. lol
Oaft, flashbacks to doing that same long day between Inveroran and Kinlochleven a number of years ago - really should've gone for one of those wee hobbit huts too, remember that bit of grass out the front being absolutely rock solid and ruining a load of pegs!
Thanks for this video. Scotland looks to be beautiful for backpacking. I have that same TT Notch Li solo tent. Like you I added fly hem stake loops. I bought the optional "pole handle cups" so my pole handles can be UP and not down in the dirt. Also I dyed my inner tent Green with RIT Dyemore (for synthetic fabrics). This gives me shade and some privacy in an otherwise translucent tent. Not sure yet but I MAY add the mid-fly guy line points you have done since here in the US mountain west we can get some pretty high winds, sometimes for days at a time.
Excellently shot and expertly crafted. Nice J cuts there fella and I like how you take a second to cast your eye over a bridge and then shoot what you see. Look forward to more. 👍
Thanks mate. Taken good few years to try and get better at putting the films together. Always seem to forget a bit of footage to shoot or have issue with audio, lol. Atb
That was fantastic Ray, so calm and professional. Hats off to you for doing 20+ miles a day and still have the energy to do those walking shots. I’ve watched hundreds of WHW videos & the wife never pays any attention. This is the only video that she was engrossed in! Believe me that is a major compliment. She also spotted those boots and hiking tights you were wearing & is sending me off to update my kit....I’ll ‘accidentally’ show her a few more of your kit reviews....cheers buddy!
Thoroughly enjoyed that Ray. I was going to say, 'still as a lily pond,' but hey it wasn't going to last. I'd have gone with the pod to. Reasonable finish. I'll do it one day. A great walk there. Mark

Excellent video Ray, I really enjoyed watching that one. I can't read the writing on those dehydrated meals either without my specs on, so I usually get a sharpie pen and write how long it takes and how much water you need to add on the side of the packet in big writing before I leave the house. Atb Glenn
Great video, Ray! Sad to say that me and my mates just failed the WHW last week. Tried to do it in 6 days, but this was our first thru hike. Made the classic mistakes. Doing too much too soon; bags were way too heavy; etc. We’re gutted, but I must say - what an education! Learnt so much and have the thru hiking bug despite the failed attempt. I aim to give it another go next year. Will be following you for inspiration and advice. Thanks! Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍
Thanks for that, now I have another trip I need to book. I'm heading up to the highlands in Feb and doing a ride from Edinburgh to London in May so might be able to fit this in to July.....looks awesome.
Felt a little down this morning...then came across this...absolutely transfixed loved every minute of it..looking forward to watching more ...very much helped by the walker himself..very warm..wants you to feel part of it....
Thanks for sharing your hike, I loved the remoteness. I've enjoyed many hikes here in the S African Drakensberg mountains, but only single day sessions. Regards from S Africa Clive
Lovely video Ray. Brought back happy memories of backpacking the WHW in the early nineties. We took a week though so not as fast as you. We did it in the first week of October. We were so lucky with the weather. Clear blue skies every day, frost on the tent in the morning and a perfect temperature for walking. And NO midges at all! Great days. Take care my friend.
It's a great report on the West Highland Way trail. I wish I had watched your video before I spent a few days in the Highlands, last August. I will be back anyways. Congratulations!
@@RS.Outdoors I just found your channel a few days ago. It has kept me night awake :) Fabulous narratives, awesome images, and precious information. Love the way you describe what you are going through during the hiking. Plus, it´s all about Scotland! (In my mind and heart I haven't returned from there yet) "Absolutely fantastic!" Thank you!
You are helping a lot of us get through these troubled times chief, and for that I am thankful. It's always calming and inspiring to watch. Amazing footage and so professional. I love that you remind us, challenge us even, in the nicest way to experience these places with you and for ourselves. Peace and love to you sir. Have a wee coffee on me.
Thank you so much Ray, wonderful to see you getting back on track and letting us be part of it 🤗 we had to cancel our scotland trip last year but this video makes me hopeful that we can soon visit your beautiful country again. Stay safe and cheers for now 🍀
Nice, a trail I have done many times now, only the first time south bound last year though and it made a fair old difference I have to say. I did find your optimism funny prior to going to the Green Wellie thinking "he surely knows it's pricey as hell". I don't think I have ever done the Beinglas to Inveroran section dry..! Blackwater is a great wee campsite. Unfortunately the last couple of times I have done the trail that last section has been scarred by the new power lines they have been installing and last year the forest had been felled further in, still great to do though and I really do feel it's still my favourite trail, it just offers everything.
@@RS.Outdoors I found it easier in general I suppose, maybe it was just the different perspective of going southbound but I did notice a few things off the trail I hadn't noticed before, it was a good experience so definitely try it.
Great video Ray, as per the below comment it is the best WHW RUclips video I’ve come across. I’m planning on doing it next year so your video is really helpful.

I walked it somewhere in the 90ties - wow a lot has changed. Most of it looks paved (-! And the campsites and buildings all look really fancy compared.. Me and the other half have just walked and wild cramped it in 5 and a bit days. Absolutely amazing! We watched your videos for tips and your one of the green welly is spot on! We do not recommend it either! 😆. Hope you well Ray and keep up the good work!
That is awesome! Glad you had a great trip. Atb
Great video Ray, I like all your films, informative and great scenery, look forward to many more.
Thanks for watching Robert. Atb
Fantastic mate. Thoroughly enjoyed watching.
God bless
Thanks 👍Atb
Excellent video Ray, I really enjoyed watching that one. I can't read the writing on those dehydrated meals either without my specs on, so I usually get a sharpie pen and write how long it takes and how much water you need to add on the side of the packet in big writing before I leave the house. Atb Glenn
Good idea. Did have my glasses down in my rucksack but couldn't be bothered fishing them out lol. Atb
Congratulation. An excellent walk. Super video too.
Thank you very much!
Thank you..Excellent walk and really enjoyable watch 👏🏻hopefully 1 day I will tackle this walk...
You should! Atb
Late to the party on this video but this video just convinced me. Doing the west highland way this September 😊
Hope you have a wonderful time. Atb
Sorry to hear that. Practice makes perfect mate ;) Atb
@@RS.Outdoors thank you 👍
Great blog Ray ,it makes us gentlemen off a certain age shows what’s possible, thank you, Paul messner could do it in his camper van👍
Very true and thanks for watching. Atb
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing your hike, I loved the remoteness.
I've enjoyed many hikes here in the S African Drakensberg mountains, but only single day sessions.
Regards from S Africa

Sounds great! Many thanks for watching. Atb
That is awesome! Atb
Another great video, made me homesick though. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from NZ.
Glad you enjoyed it. Atb
Thanks for that, the path seems really good. Glad you’ve not had any feet issues.
All good. Atb
Great vid Ray hopefully be there in May - Planning on splitting the Loch Lomond stage over 2 days 👍
Cheers Dave and hope the weather is good and you have a fantastic time. Atb
Absolutely SUPERB pal very well done, superb footage, really enjoyed watching, cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it. Atb
It's a great report on the West Highland Way trail. I wish I had watched your video before I spent a few days in the Highlands, last August. I will be back anyways. Congratulations!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Dave much appreciated and kind gesture. Atb
Thank you so much Ray, wonderful to see you getting back on track and letting us be part of it 🤗 we had to cancel our scotland trip last year but this video makes me hopeful that we can soon visit your beautiful country again. Stay safe and cheers for now 🍀
Hope you get back soon. Atb
Such a great video I really enjoying I saw many familiar places I have seen
nicely filmed, well done
Thanks for watching. Atb
Great video,I love all the colours .
I would love to do it ,maybe one day
You should! Atb
How did you find walking it south, easier, harder? Might try it that way in a future walk.
Thanks for the kind comment. Hope to maybe do it myself again this winter. Hope you manage to get on it next year and have agreat time. Atb
Thanks Ray. I’m targeting September so hopefully the midgies and crowds start to die down by then. Are you doing another video of it in winter?
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, well done!
Maybe one day....
Go for it! Atb
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I'm walking WHW later this year, my first long distance. I have watched several videos of people walking this, but yours showcased the beautiful scenary the best. I am pleasantly surprised at how flat it is in general!
Glad it was helpful! Hope you have great weather and a fantastic time. Atb
Have always wanted to do this walk. Thanks for all the fantastic information.
Glad you found it of use. Atb
thanks Ray other great film.
Thanks Robin. Atb
Congratulations. And a macaroni pie from the green welly - superb
I really enjoyed that. Very gentle and relaxing. Well done and thanks.
Many thanks!
again really enjoyed watching along and learning a lot from your videos. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Thanks 👍
What a great natural and non forced journey you shared and took me along. Thank you very much for sharing and look forward to following your future adventures. Cheers !
Cheers Mark, much appreciated. Atb
Wonderful video and countryside, for a tramper and outdoor lover brought up in NZ I found it quite inspiring. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it. Atb
Absolutely cracking trail this, did it in 8 days Sept 2007 & the rain jacket stayed in my pack for all but 2 hrs defending into kinlochleven ! Plan do do it again with my son this time, cheers for sharing & bringing back great memories 👍
Good stuff!
That's an excellent well polished bit of filming & editing Ray. Nicely done, made me fancy another hike on the WHW. You talk about scran a lot eh. 🍔 Cheers for the shout out too. 😁
Like my scran on a trip but..... You don't realise how many times you talk about the same thing until you get back and review the footage ;)
@@RS.Outdoors don't, the amount of times I said "alrighty folks" or "alright folks" in my vlogs. 🙈
@@WalkWithWallace Its the fact that there is hours and hours between shots and last thing on your mind is what you have or are going to talk about. :)
@@RS.Outdoors particularly when filming over a few days, not just a night away.
I walked it somewhere in the 90ties - wow a lot has changed. Most of it looks paved (-! And the campsites and buildings all look really fancy compared..
You did this so fast, we took more than a week. Fond memories, thanks - the stunning landscape still remains as for the burgers - and nice people on the way no doubt..
Cool. Although the trail has had upgrades it is still as remote at points as ever. Atb
Marvellous stuff. Looking forward to ticking the WHW off eventually. Thanks for taking the time and sharing the video.
Hope you get to do it and have a great time. Atb
