@matt alen Yeah I know, so crazy to believe that is his actual name and not a stage name that he came up with. He is also the son of Jazz trumpeter Don Cherry too, which is pretty cool.
There's room for a 3rd. Here are some suggestions: Fastball: "The Way" Semisonic: "Closing Time" Refreshments: "Banditos" Verve Pipe: "The Freshman" (I know they had more, but this really was their 'one hit'.) Here's the most obscure hit I own: Oleander: "Why I'm Here"
Fastball are a really interesting case. They had one top 20 hit in the US. It was "Out of My Head". "The Way" didn't even make the Hot 100. Another victim of the airplay vs. record sales dichotomy of the late 90's.
Was gonna say Fastball in no way was 1 hit with "The Way". "Outta My Head" maybe. I liked "Fire Escape" as well, that song is the 90's in that first riff 100%. You hear that opening guitar and instantly know it was 1990's.
From an American standpoint, The Verve are severely underrated. That whole album Urban Hymns is a masterpiece. “Bittersweet Symphony” isn’t even the greatest song on that album yet I still love that song. Don’t get me wrong. Personally, I think “The Drugs Don’t Work” is the REAL shining star from that record!!!
I thought Sonnet was a minor hit in the US. Also, I've heard Lucky Man on the radio a few times recently, which I initially was reintroduced to online. I somehow missed that one on the album but it's probably my favorite song off that album currently. That or Rolling People
It's funny The Verve is on here, when there was another one-hit wonder in the 90s by a band called The Verve Pipe called The Freshmen. It's so easy to get the two confused and mixed up lol.
Danny was in from 1985 and Maynard 1990 whenTool went big they focused their attention on that but Danny was in 5 bands at the time including playing for Carole King
Not true, people WAY over-state Maynard's involvement with the band. Maynard played a VERY minor role on a couple songs of theirs in the 90s, but they had been going since the '81. He was only doing some brief and sparse appearances and definitely was NOT a member of their original lineup or even a full-fledged member of the band by any means.
"Cannonball" is another great song, in addition to "In The Meantime," that most people know but to which very few know the title. It's made me wish I had an app on my phone that I could ask, "Hey, what's the song that goes 'bow-oo-wow-ah, bow-oo-wow-ah, bow-oo-wow-ah, bow-oo-wow-ah . . .?"
Cannonball and Cumbersome are some of my favorites. They're definitely on my 90s playlist. Another one that you didn't mention is "Space Lord" by Monster Magnet. The song and its music video were just so over the top, that's what I love about it.
This series could seriously go on with several more lists because there's just so much material to work with. Love these videos. I shall offer a suggestion I haven't seen listed. Semisonic- "closing time"
I said this on the last video, but Kidneythieves "Before I'm Dead" is one that sticks out for me. Came out in the late '90's and was most notably used in the Queen of the Damned soundtrack (which is the best thing about that film, imo)
Killer song, but imo Chino Moreno and Chester Bennington were the best parts of the film/soundtrack lol I get chills just thinking of Chester singing that chorus. Glad I rediscovered this one for sure
2 songs that come to mind are “Two Princes” by Spin Doctors. aka the song everyone knows but nobody knows what it’s called. And “Hey Leonardo” (She Likes Me for Me) by Blessid Union of Souls. Lately i’ve been going back listening to “90s Pop Rock Essentials” on spotify. Has some good radio rock from that era.
Spin Doctors had three, Lil Miss Can't Be Wrong, Two Princes and Jimmy Olsen's Blues. A fourth single What Time Is It was a rock radio hit but didn't make the Billboard hot 100.
My high school band formed around this song! We did our own video of it as an assignment in the days when you had to sign the video recorder out from the school library overnight or for the weekend. 😆 Our audio recording was sooo lofi and crappy..! And then for the video, we had cardboard cutout guitars for some reason..🤔
I agree! I was driving through the wooded area near Monterrey, CA after a rain when Bittersweet started playing. It was a perfect backdrop and I relieve those moments every time I hear it!
It's probably not hip enough for coffee shops and cd stores in the UK. I'm thinking of when I was a kid and walking around Kwiksave and low-cost with my mum.

New Age Girl - Dead Eye Dick Released: June 1994 I remember this song when i was in 1st year high school as its always play in every radio stations. One of the most played songs back in the day of most of the radio stations in the Philippines. Considered as one of the One-Hit-Wonder Bands in 90’s Alternative Rock Era.
New Radicals played a Y100 Festival in Philly and opened with their hit. They played the rest of the set, and their family showed up toward the end of their set. They ended up playing You Get What You Give again. 😂♥️
I actually love "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and have no issues concentrating on it - and I have massive ADHD! And, well, I do know the lyrics, as I covered it with my former band. And yes, I sang lead while playing the bass. Just like the Deep Blue Something's leader (can't remember his name - contrary to the lyrics) ;-) Oh, and I really liked Jesus Jones as an early teen. Yup, I've always been a bit weird.
Crash Test Dummies where definitely much more successful in Canada. As I am from Canada, I still remember a lot of their singles that where at least released here
They aren’t technically touted as a one hit wonder, due to being highly successful in their home country of Australia, but “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls charted highly in the Billboard charts at #4 in 1991 despite the band doing a number of gigs in the United States in the eighties as well as making an appearance at the 1983 US Festival. Despite having a huge number of hits in Australia in the eighties such as “Boys in Town,” “Science Fiction,” “Pleasure and Pain,” “Back to the Wall” and my favourite “Sleeping Beauty.” “I Touch Myself” was their only huge hit in the United States even gaining controversy with its release in 1991 with various radio stations refusing to play the track due to it being a Frank reference to female masturbation. In 2014, the song became a breast cancer awareness anthem, a year after the death of Divinyls vocalist Christina “Chrissy” Amphlett at age 57 after a three year battle with breast cancer, mind you she had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis since the late nineties. The song had been sung by various female figures in Breast Cancer Awareness PSA’s such as Serena Williams.
Eagle Eye Cherry, who made the one hit wonder 'Save Tonight', is actually the brother of Neneh Cherry, who wrote 'Buffalo Stance', another great one hit wonder... 😉👍
Between these two lists I think that this was the better one. I surely would have included all the entries here and would have found room on the first list for The Wallflowers “One Headlight” and Lisa Loeb “Stay”. Having spent my pre-teen and teenage years in the 90’s those were two big songs that I think were missed.
I'm still obsessed with "Right Here, Right Now". It features heavily on my Spotify playlist of my favorite 90s tracks. It's 4 hours long lol. Maybe this song in particular is because I have such vivid memories of myself when I was 12, listening to this song. So the nostalgia is strong. But it's very memorable in its own right too.
Also if there’s a volume 3 of this, put Local H on there. Mid 90s OHW, but they are sincerely one of the most underrated bands out there - two person band who have consistently put out fantastic music for over 30 years.
Crash Test Dummies were far from a one hit wonder here in Canada. I was surprised to see them on the list, but Canadian Content laws probably made it seem like they had a bigger career here than in the States.
This is a strong list. I’m one of those people still in the New Radicals camp. I saw the video at 3am when I was in college, and went and bought the cassette when it was in the $7.99 bin. Good stuff!!
Weird fact in Canada the Crash Test Dummy's big hit wasn't Mmmmm, that was their big hit internationally, but in Canada their biggest hit is Superman's Song. So not only are the Crash Test Dummies in the League of One Hit Wonders Who Had More Hits At Home, but in their home their big hit is different song.
It's always so weird to be reminded that You Get What You Give was released in the 90s. I still vividly remember first hearing it on a car ad, and it feels like yesterday.
Green Jelly should also be noted for the criminally underrated "Carnage Rules" off their album 333 which was a tie-in into the comic and video game Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage.
If I hear the actual song, the first thing that comes to mind is the lyrics from the Weird Al version. "Once... there was this guy who... made his wife so mad one night that she cut off his weiner..."
As soon as you said favorite OHW (plus I recognized Gregg Alexander on the card), I knew what it was. I actually found your channel because of your New Radicals video and rediscovered you a few months ago. Huge NR fan, still hoping for a second album, and a fan of yours too. Well done!
American Standard by Seven Mary Three is one of the best albums I've ever heard...Water's Edge, Cumbersome, My My, Headstrong...even the songs that didn't get airplay are very good. Rodrigo, Margaret. It's one of the few I play as loud as possible from beginning to end.
Oasis is my favorite band, but if the Verve had lasted longer I think they could have been more acclaimed than them or even Radiohead. Sonnet and The Drugs Don’t Work are some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life.
I don't think Vertical Horizon really counts, since "You're A God" hit 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 12 on Adult Alternative, so it was, by every metric, a hit.
Right Here Right Now was as ubiquitous as a song can be that year and even kind of stuck around for quite a few. I was sold, I had the cassette. I liked the more “industrial” songs like Stripped and 2 and 2. At the time the had a follow up with Real Real Real that had a little bit of traction but from today’s perspective, they definitely qualify as one hit status here in the states.
As a Brit, I completely agree that the verve are a one hit wonder. Yes I can probably name a few more songs but that is the only one people know and care about
In the UK its their signature song for sure, gets played more than all their other work put together. But you do still hear things like Sonnet, Lucky Man and The Drugs Don’t Work now and again.
Great list! Love this series. You might even need to make a part 3 with how many others there are. "Backwater" by Meat Puppets "Space Lord" by Monster Magnet "Why I'm Here" by Oleander (iffy whether you could call them a one hit wonder, more like half a hit) "River of Deceit" by Mad Season "Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche (they had multiple rock hits, but this song hit #9 on the hot 100 and they never made that chart again) "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit "Save Tonight" by Eagle Eye Cherry "The Freshmen" by The Verve Pipe
Queensrhyche isn’t really alternative. They were kind of progmetal and in my opinion closer to glam rock than modern rock. Calling the Meat Puppets(who were a popular band before that song) a one hit wonder hurts a little. Monster Magnet had Negasonic Teenage Wathead too. That’s the better song!!!
Mad Season also had another hit song with "I Don't Know Anything," The Verve Pipe and Meat Puppets both had a handful of hit songs each and Queensryche? They had like a dozen. Definitely not one-hit wonder bands...
I remember when I was younger and my mom showed me and my brother the video to Green Jello's "Little Pig" and I couldn't stop laughing my ass off. Especially during the Rambo part
Backwater - Meat Puppets Jessie - Paw Unsung - Helmet Connection - elastica Bluster - Salt We play girlfriend - neros rome Anything by TAD Los Vargos - green apple quick step Bad Reputation - Freedy Johnston Mother mother - Tracey Bonham
Some of my other favorites are "Whoever You Are" by Geggy Tah, "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, "Crash" by the Primitives (also off the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack) and "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods.
Shortly after "Cumbersome" arrived to mainstream music, "My Own Prison" popped up. Both deep distinctive voices doing crossover rock. One is fondly remembered despite being a one-hit wonder. The other... well, I still am a fan of that song even if other songs lead to less fond memories involving yelling SEEEEXX! Your love of Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too will always make me smile. My shuffle led me to hear "Mother we just can't get enough" this morning.
Being a fan of the Breeders/Kim Deal and considering her participation in the Pixies and just all around musical influence on my life, it’s weird to see her lumped in with the rest of these acts who are largely remembered for just the one song featured but I guess in the general consciousness, that’s how Cannonball is remembered.
Green Jello!!! I saw them live at this tiny dive in Richmond, VA in 2008. I had only been in "the city" for like a month and I will never ever forget that show!
Is Fastball considered a One-Hit Wonder? I know "The Way" was their biggest hit, but I'm the only one I know that seems to remember their other lower charting songs "Fire Escape" and "Out of My Head."
6:30 Another great connection between Green Jello and Tool: Sylvia Massy, who produced the Cereal Killer Sountrack for Green Jello, also produced Tool's debut album, Undertow.
A lot of people in the comments have great suggestions! Some great songs I haven’t seen in a video or the comments yet are The Impression That I Get by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sell Out by Reel Big Fish, Brick by Ben Folds Five, Zoot Suit Riot by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, and Sister by The Nixons.
I love videos like this,as it offers a slightly different perspective on some bands that were'nt one hit wonders elsewhere. The Verve were massive in Europe and the UK throughout the late 90s. Already doing well in the indie circuit in the mid 90s, that "Urban Hyms" album yielded other massive songs elsewhere. They had a more introspective, broodier take on Britpop but had that Oasis swagger in tracks aswell. Interesting that following Bittersweet Sympathy, they did'nt continue the success in the US. On the other hand, most of the US, Canadian bands seen here barley made a dent across the Atlantic. Crash test Dummies and Deep Blue Something yes briefly, but Seven Mary 3 and Spagehog , not so much at all. Great video. 😃👍

I remember hearing "Bittersweet Symphony" at Disney World back in 2014. I thought that was pretty ironic! XD
Breakfast at Tiffany sounds like music you hear when you building your Sim a home
Exactly.
The album, "Home," is actually pretty great, overall, in my opinion. "Breakfast at Tiffany's," isn't even one of the better songs on it.
Amazing that "(Got You) Where I Want You" made so much out of just two chords.
Presidents of the United states of America did more with 1 string....
NEVER heard of the group OR song....
Also if there’s a volume 3 of this, put Local H on there. Mid 90s OHW, but they are sincerely one of the most underrated bands out there - two person band who have consistently put out fantastic music for over 30 years.
Underrated maybe... 1 hit wonder?... no, they were more than that...
They weren’t really a one hit wonder.
I LOVE THEM!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Crash Test Dummies were far from a one hit wonder here in Canada. I was surprised to see them on the list, but Canadian Content laws probably made it seem like they had a bigger career here than in the States.
Americans didn’t like the tragically hip either so we all know they have no taste lol
I listen to ‘you get what you give’ with my students at school here in Japan.
Now that was a great list that hit me like a nostalgia brick
“In the Meantime” is well known in the U.K. but only the intro riff which was used in advertising for Vodafone for years in the 2000’s.
This is a strong list. I’m one of those people still in the New Radicals camp. I saw the video at 3am when I was in college, and went and bought the cassette when it was in the $7.99 bin. Good stuff!!
Still so many more one hit wonders you can do a 3rd
Green Jello having to change their name to Green Jelly was a sad day in Rock
Weird fact in Canada the Crash Test Dummy's big hit wasn't Mmmmm, that was their big hit internationally, but in Canada their biggest hit is Superman's Song. So not only are the Crash Test Dummies in the League of One Hit Wonders Who Had More Hits At Home, but in their home their big hit is different song.
The song God Shuffled His Feet seemed pretty successful to me too.
Loved playing that game and it was the FIRST actual song licensed for a video game
Fucking love that album
Mmm mmm mmm mmm is one of the oddest to name's when there is people that aren't familiar with the song
As a Canadian, I can't think of the Crash Test Dummies as a one hit wonder.
If I hear the actual song, the first thing that comes to mind is the lyrics from the Weird Al version.
"Once... there was this guy who... made his wife so mad one night that she cut off his weiner..."
I was in 10th grade when “Cannonball” was released & that song was one that I would blast no matter when it came on the radio or MTV.
Agreed ... holds up well too.
Seriously, this is my FAVORITE video/list you’ve ever come out with!!! The GREATEST!!!! Awesome job! Rock the fffff on!
Oasis is my favorite band, but if the Verve had lasted longer I think they could have been more acclaimed than them or even Radiohead. Sonnet and The Drugs Don’t Work are some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life.
In my head Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars and Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's are interchangeable
DBS lead singer sounds like the Friends' theme singer
??? What
Vertical Horizon and their song "Everything You Want". Yes, the got some airplay with other songs off that album, but nothing was a big as that song.
I don't think Vertical Horizon really counts, since "You're A God" hit 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 12 on Adult Alternative, so it was, by every metric, a hit.
“Doubt” is a great record and they had a few hits in the U.K.
And New Zealand. International Bright Young Thing made me buy their album. Right Here Right Now came out after that here
Real Real Real was big everywhere.
Len-Steal My Sunshine. I think that was still the 90's lol.
You are correct! I was lying on the grass on Sunday morning of last week and it came on, in fact.
What I remember most about Bitter Sweet Symphony is it being played at the end of Cruel Intentions.
All the memories these songs make me remember that I had forgotten, wow!!!
3:30 I remember it as the song that played during JJ venture’s funeral.
Great list! Love this series. You might even need to make a part 3 with how many others there are.
"Backwater" by Meat Puppets
"Space Lord" by Monster Magnet
"Why I'm Here" by Oleander (iffy whether you could call them a one hit wonder, more like half a hit)
"River of Deceit" by Mad Season
"Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche (they had multiple rock hits, but this song hit #9 on the hot 100 and they never made that chart again)
"My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit
"Save Tonight" by Eagle Eye Cherry
"The Freshmen" by The Verve Pipe
Queensrhyche isn’t really alternative. They were kind of progmetal and in my opinion closer to glam rock than modern rock. Calling the Meat Puppets(who were a popular band before that song) a one hit wonder hurts a little.
Monster Magnet had Negasonic Teenage Wathead too. That’s the better song!!!
Mad Season also had another hit song with "I Don't Know Anything," The Verve Pipe and Meat Puppets both had a handful of hit songs each and Queensryche? They had like a dozen. Definitely not one-hit wonder bands...
I agree that these are great songs. Don't know if they all qualify
Nada Surf. Popular
Backwater is a bada$$ song
Completely agree about "You get what you give" as greatest one hit wonder of all time
Over 20 years later and I still love it.
I am so happy to have found this channel!
A song I loved back the in 90s but don't see mentioned very often--"Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet.
I mostly remember the anime music video, back before anime was big in the west
I remember Girlfriend fondly. Loved the song when I was in high school.
I think Sick of Myself was the bigger hit of his.
Sick of myself was a bigger hit on the alternative charts.
I saw Jesus Jones in concert in '9, and they were amazing! "Doubt" is a great album.
And yes, the 90's were weird, but I miss them. 😊
So, I checked both videos... I'm missing "A Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins
Gotta say dude, your videos, commentary, and hairstyles keep getting better every time you release a new video. Keep up the great content, cheers
"You got what you give" is Summer...in audio form to me
Get What You Give is one of my favourite one hit wonders. It just reminds me of growing up in the 90's. It's awesome!
Got You Where I Want You is one of my top 5 90s songs for sure. Great jam.
I remember when I was younger and my mom showed me and my brother the video to Green Jello's "Little Pig" and I couldn't stop laughing my ass off. Especially during the Rambo part
You get what you give still holds up. Love that song
Backwater - Meat Puppets
Jessie - Paw
Unsung - Helmet
Connection - elastica
Bluster - Salt
We play girlfriend - neros rome
Anything by TAD
Los Vargos - green apple quick step
Bad Reputation - Freedy Johnston
Mother mother - Tracey Bonham
Angry Johnny - Poe
I got a girl - tripping daisies
Helmet had more great songs. Unsung is their most popular but I wouldn’t call them a one hit wonder. Elastica had a couple of hits too.
@@robgesualdi206 Poe had 3HUGE songs on that record. Trigger Happy Jack??? Hello???
Some of my other favorites are "Whoever You Are" by Geggy Tah, "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, "Crash" by the Primitives (also off the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack) and "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods.
Urban Hymns is a great album. “Lucky Man” is one of my favorite tracks ever.
Belly -Feed the Tree
The Refreshments- Banditos
Catherine Wheel- Black Metallic
Fun Loving Criminals-Scooby Snacks
Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground
I hear cumbersome every other day on the radio. It will never die
My shuffle led me to hear "Mother we just can't get enough" this morning.
i was gonna say the Cumbersome SOUNDS like it was sung by Creed, the vocalists really sound alike, at least on that track.
You're standing on my neck by Splendora is that comes to mind straight away that a lot of people know.
Days of the New
"Touch, Peel, Stand"
Absolutely
I saw this guy sing Three Little Pigs at a karaoke night, and he rocked it!
Brother Cane - and fools shine on
Dovetail Joint - level on the inside
Dovetail Joint!!!
Got No Shame was a bigger hit for Brother Cane.
I stand corrected! Just listened to got no shame and I do remeber hearing that one on the radio
You What Get You Give was supposed to be our 6th Grade graduation song but we couldn't play it due a lyric and we decided to play Time of your life
Three Little Pigs is awesome and the music video is amazing.
90's claymation cheese, and that's not being insulting. XD
One week
@@ps-yk8su They had at least three hits.
Oh, and Why I’m Here by Oleander.
Might Mighty Bosstones had Someday, I Suppose, Ben Folds had a bunch of songs and Reel Big Fish had a couple too.
@@joemiller7082 I know, but their other songs didn’t chart that well or anything.
"Prisoner of Society" by The Living End - might be stretching the definition of a hit though - great song and great band either way!
You get what you give is the poster child of 90s. I fucking love it
