The hurdygurdy seems like a weird accordion guitar baby and it so cool. Thanks for the awesome educational video and now I get the hurdygurdy and the nyckelharpa to read into. Your awesome
thanks. the closed captions produce an astonishing array of poor guesses about how to spell the name of this instrument, worth watching, holy gotti. XD different wrong guess every time, it's impressive!
Thanks a lot Annie, I did not know this instrument before, I found it with you and it is a great discovery ! Any chance you play a day somewhere in France ? :)
I have always wondered about this instrument and how to write for it. I compose using Finale, but I am not sure if the version that I have (the very old version from 2011) has the hurdy gurdy in their instrument list. If not, then I would need to figure out how to modify another string instrument and change the MIDI numbers. I came across this problem when working on writing for other folkloric instrunents via my dissertation years ago, where I had to modify the banjo in Finale to accommodate the strings for the Puerto Rican cuatro and tiple.
Not familiar with Finale, but does it allow for VSTis or other plugins? If so, you could probably find a hurdy-gurdy VSTi. I bet there might even be a freeware one.
Basically, you just write the tune, and consider the limitations of the instrument. If you're using the drones, not all keys will be available , as you want to be in tune with them. If you have drone capos, that may expand your range a little, but not by much. Here, anyway, are a couple of tunes I composed for the hurdy-gurdy: ruclips.net/video/SPRXQnjYqMQ/видео.html
Nice introduction of this awesome instrument. Congrats! Btw, what is that for an interesting Rosin-bottle? Does it work well / better than with cotton? Do you recommend it? Where to get one from? Thank you and all the best!
Wo bekommt man so ein Ding her ?
Really want to start playing the Hurdy gurdy, but it's pretty cost prohibitive so just saving up little bits at a time. Love seeing your stuff, I really want to play folk and metal music with it.
Wonderful video Annie.💚 How easy is it to pick up playing the Hurdy Gurdy? Would you recomend it to someone with very little musical experience or is it a more "advanced" insturment?
I started playing in 2018 with pretty much no musical experience prior, I'd say it's not hard to start. You'll pretty quickly be able to play melodies on it. The challenging part is learning how to do maintenance and playing coups (the rhythmic buzzing). I really recommend getting a teacher, there are people who offer lessons over video calls or if you are lucky enough to live somewhere with in person lessons(western europe mostly, but it's still rare). They can really help when starting out! Sometimes you don't know what you don't know and they can catch problems early so you have the smoother learning experience. Overal I really recommend it. If you are interested in the instrument and you think you'll stick with it it can be really rewarding! There are some hurdy-gurdy groups you can join for more resources if you are interested
Hello Annie Can you point me direction where should i get my first actually good hurdy gurdy with trompet string, i like the buzzing sound and want to learn how to play, i bought one from Workshop Medieval and im not satisfied to sound, thank you appreciate for help if get any, if i can get one from EU area to Finland 😊
So fascinating - thanks for this amazing (and charming!) explanation. Back in the c1910-20 period a US company produced an extraordinary mechanical violin, the Violano Virtuoso, which used a similar wheel system as a hurdy-gurdy. You put a coin in the slot and hey presto! your chosen tune played. Unfortunately, it was usually horribly distorted because it was almost impossible to keep the device in tune - as evidenced here: ruclips.net/video/JA3tXr941iI/видео.html You can see it incorporates an equally dubious piano too. It was designed by a Swede, who perhaps drew inspiration from the hurdy-gurdy. But the real thing sounds a LOT better!
I'll suggest Folkskelet's channel. She has a couple of videos about purchasing hurdy-gurdies, including one on buying a starter instrument and another on inexpensive ones. Might be worth checking out. Annie already has a video about her model, and I think she has contact info for the maker on that video (Herr Wofgang Weichselbaumer).
I have listened to a lot of hurdy gurdys. This is by far the most beautiful sounding hurdy gurdy and probably also the most expensive one.
I've never been so happy i went down a rabbit hole for something I was curious about. This was fascinating. Now to enjoy some fine tunes!
I've always loved the way hurdy gurdys sound and finally learning about how it's made makes me love it so much more. So cool!!

I was introduced to the hurdy gurdy at like 25 years old in the video game sea of thieves 😂
Hey! I always thought it was a complete fictional instrument. Besides a violine I need this kind of instrument oO
Thanks a lot Annie, I did not know this instrument before, I found it with you and it is a great discovery ! Any chance you play a day somewhere in France ? :)

Hi! Very interesting! How did you learn to play this instrument? Kisses from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! 🇧🇷😊🥰🙏

@@Thomas.Wright I don't know if the 2011 version (or even Version 27 for that matter) would allow that, but I need to check and ask around.
I have no experience with Finale, but when I use Musescore to write sheetmusic I use a modified nyckelharpa.

Funny. Up until now the only thing I associated "hurdy-gurdy" to was the old Nokia 3310 ringtone which was the ringtone I used on mine😂

Where to get a decent one? For someone who plays musically professionally but is interested in dabbling.
You are so beauty, Sucses Always Sist GBU

Thank you :) It's a tune I wrote, called 'Marie's run'
The Hurdy Gurdy is the string version of the bagpipe.
