Sacramento's stadium never got built, then abandoned (Arco Park)

  • ARCO Park is an unfinished multi-purpose stadium directly north of the arena. The original plan was to have a AAA minor-league baseball stadium adjacent to the basketball stadium. The stadium would have been capable of expansion to accommodate both a Major League Baseball team (possibly the Oakland A's) and a National Football League team (possibly the-then Los Angeles Raiders). However, the facility was never finished because the Sacramento Sports Association ran out of money during construction in 1989 and a team was never secured. The remnants of this incomplete stadium include foundations and a tunnel leading to the basketball arena. With the subsequent redevelopment of the ARCO Arena site into California Northstate University's Medical Center Campus, the remnants of the incomplete stadium are likely to be demolished.

      Still could...
      I would be much more content if it was Oakland vs. Sacramento as the conversation rather than godforsaken, and, sorry, but absolutely vile and disgusting piss vegas. At least Sacramento has a community that's real.
      Sacramento and Oakland are effectively my true hometowns on nearly equal levels... and if the A's left Oakland for Sacramento, while I'd be a little bit miffed since I love my OAKLAND A's, I'd be at least a decent bit excited to see the Sacramento A's launch absolute bombs on windy, warm summer nights in my beloved Sacramento.

    Arco Park was also on the radar of MLS in 1995 when it came to forming the league & establishing where teams were going to play. However MLS ultimately chose San Jose for their 2nd California franchise (at the time) because of the history the city had with the Earthquakes in the NASL. Then when Sacramento Republic became a club in 2012, there was talk that the Arco Park site would be used to build a soccer specific stadium but that fell through & the club played their matches at Hughes Stadium before moving to Heart Health Park (their current home) midway through the 2014 season.

    This arena actually went up in 1988. It was the 2nd Arco Arena. The first Arco from 1985 was actually a makeshift arena made from a converted office building that held about 10000 fans and it was a total madhouse at the time. That old Arco structure actually still stands today as it was converted back into an office building! It hosts the California Dept. of Consumer Affairs, as well as the State Funeral Buerau, and some Acupuncture thing. I have been there for some CDCA stuff that I needed to do for work when I was based in Sacramento.
    It's right off of i80 at Truxel just north of the InNout Burger! Go say hi to the original Arco!

    $20 million worth of concrete.
    The first iteration was for a baseball stadium. Then when the Raiders were looking to relocate from L.A,
    Al Davis was here in Sacramento putting in his two cents in for an NFL stadium.
    The City of Sacramento put up $50 for Al Davis but had a drop dead date to make a decision. He ended up building Mt. Davis (courtesy of Oakland / Alameda County.
    BTW there was a tunnel from ARCO ARENA to the Stadium. Didn’t go all the way through to the stadium since
    it was incomplete.

      people are being deceived by the glitz and glamour of it! It’s too small of a market and transient. NHL and NBA should be the only sports there for now. See how they do and then add more sports. I like Vegas a lot but I’m just being honest

      @John Revolution Fremont has less crime and less homelessness with support from politicians to get stadium built and A’s backed out. A’s are to blame for not getting anything done in Bay Area! Fremont is 20to 30 minutes from Oakland. A’s have had terrible ownership for many years. Cant blame everything on politicians because Fremont is much better to deal with and A’s still failed.

    • @deanwille334
      @deanwille334 Год назад

      @John Revolution it does matter because they would’ve had a stadium in Fremont long time ago and not moving to Vegas. At least staying in Bay Area market! I agree Oakland politicians aren’t good but A’s are to blame for not getting a stadium built in a city that wanted them in Fremont. I lived there at the time and Wolff and Fisher wimped out.Fremont is in A’s territory but they wasted time on San Jose which is Giants territory. A’s have terrible ownership like the Raiders do. Everything you said about Oakland is true. Terrible leadership but Fisher did a terrible job communicating to the fans

    • @deanwille334
      @deanwille334 Год назад

      @John Revolution I bring up Fremont because A’s couldn’t deal with a city much easier to deal with than Oakland. You and many others are fun of blaming Oakland politicians when a stadium should’ve been built long time ago in Fremont if A’s werent lead by wimpy owners. There should be no moving to Vegas that’s my point. I like Vegas and not a Vegas hater but A’s are to blame. That’s all I’m saying. I never said they are looking into Fremont or San Jose I said a stadium should’ve been built years ago so at least A’s stay in the Bay Area. If that happened, there would no moving to Vegas talk. Bay Area fans shouldn't overlook the impact Sacramento and the Central Valley has on Bay Area sports attendance and viewership, particularly baseball and football. I heard once that there were more 49er season ticket holders in Sacramento than in San Francisco. Biggest stumbling block to bring more franchises to Sac are Sacramentans themselves. We are a bigger market out here than Las Vegas, probably the largest market with only one pro sports team. We just don't push for one like we used to.

    The current park where the River Cats play could easily be expanded for MLB and the A's. Check out photos of it. Raley Field right now has no bleacher seating, and the same for Franklin Covey in Salt Lake City, another site I think beats Las Vegas. The grandstand could be built upon (think how Fenway has added seating over the years to its grandstand) for either park, and adding bleacher seating with both could push capacity up to 30,000 plus.
