  • Today was finally the day when not only did I get the opportunity to go out on the water it was in a single too! I was quite apprehensive about heading out in the single as I have not been out on the water for a while let alone in a single scull!
Today was one of those days where it was really enjoyable and left thinking what a great journey it has been so far with the Yamsquad and I am looking forward to seeing what we can do this year!

Beautiful single - may you row well and row hard! Focus on the feathering and being crisper at the catch ... even when just out for a paddle. Create new habits early and it will become second nature.

Good job getting your feet wet! Only two adjustments need to be made, one is playing with the boat parts, and the other is playing in your mind as you rediscover being on the water again.
I like that beautiful craft, and you loved what you felt in that beautiful craft! P.S. Two points for the name Scully!!

What helped me a lot in the 1x was focusing on building pressure/handle speed from the catch to the finish, then trying not to manipulate the blades out of the water at the release, just letting the finish "happen" without thinking about it much. If the boat is set as the blades pop out, you don't have to adjust anything during the recovery, just trolley to the catch to take the next stroke. Easy. That in turn helps with squaring the blades and getting a deft catch. A drill that may help is to get a light but quick catch, apply only 50% pressure for the first half of the stroke, and then build to 100% at the release.
As for getting your blades off the water during the recovery, once you find your balance that will almost happen by itself. Save your focus for other things.
Another thing that helped me was the mantra, "many many people have done this, I can do it too!" Repeat as needed, helps make you relaxed and confident.

Deep joy! 😃 So great to be connected with nature and sunshine whilst exercising! 'Blue fingers for me today on my bike ride, sunny but very wind-chilly here in the glorious vale of Belvoir. I was so slow, especially on the headwindy return leg, but did not give a flying 💩 . Thanks for dumbing down the rigging for rowing-dads (muchos appreciated 👍). Boat name? "Bath time" 😂.

Mr Boggins, as always, a pleasure. Even though I know my tekkers were hopeless, going slow and the water wasn't ideal I had a great time and enjoyed it! Pleasure being out there! When I was rigging it dawned on me that some people may never have seen certain parts of the boat before! Pleasure to help! #yamsquad

From 3:27 I did pick up quiet a fair amount of (for me) new rowing and rig vocabulary! Suggestion: One episode about english rowing vocabulary for non (english) native speaker
It will take a time untill you will be able to get yourself ragged in the single. Try to integrate some high rate strokes without too much pressure in every training will help to get to that point ;)

Let the oar handles reside right where your fingers meet your palms. You want to have a hook grip with your fingers around the handles. This should help you hang on the oars and push through the foot stretchers!

Cam, you can tell that made a helluva difference, you were beaming!! Well done mate, finally watching a rower again and not someone buggering about in a Crossfit Box. Boat name, Yamonit. Sculling, you look so tense, understandably, so relax especially the shoulders. You're a fantastic sweep oarsman, you're now going to get all the Yamsquad telling you how to scull!! Should be great fun. Looks a great new piece of water for us all to get to know. Just a thought to throw out there... would Bristol Uni be ok for you to run a sculling camp of some kind nearer the summer? On and off water coaching for a weekend? I'd stick my single on the roof and head down...

    • @CameronBuchan

Depending on how you pronounce your surname your boat could be The Buccaneer. That's much more acceptable than my first idea of naming the boat after an engine part, The Camshaft.
