Hey, what is that chirring? Some kind of insect? Or is it a bird? Or is someone's cell phone ringing?
You may have asked yourself similar questions when walking in the countryside. In the Czech Republic we have several different creatures that make strange chirring sounds. These are mainly various warblers, mole crickets, a few other insect species... and green toads, which may surprise the uninitiated. We're used to frogs croaking, but who ever heard of a toad chirring?
Green toads are thermophilic frogs of lower elevations that spend most of the year on land. They usually only enter the water in early spring to mate and lay their eggs. They prefer warm shallow pools or ponds where there is not too much shade, aquatic plants and fish. There, the toads gradually congregate and the males use their vocal display to attract potential mates. This is aided by the so-called vocal sac- a flexible membrane that serves to amplify the sound. Frogs that don't have these sacs can only be heard from a few metres away, as is the case with common toads. Green toads, however, can be heard up to a kilometre away on quiet nights!
It took me quite a few trips around South Moravia to find a suitable place for filming. Apart from the fact that not many green toads live in my "range" and I had to guess the locations mainly from the map, it was quite a problem to find a place where the roads are not noisy and the toads can be heard even during the day. Eventually I got lucky and found a few usable locations. If you would like to listen to toads chirping in the vicinity of your home, now is a good time to look. So head out into the countryside tonight and keep your ears peeled :-)

Great footage. The European green toad has such an attractive color. Its amazing how, despite living on the other side of an ocean, over 4,500 miles away, ^these European toads sound very similar to the common American toad. The only difference is the pitch.
