That was super informative. I've always wondered what type of revenue a good DIY content creator with the subscription base you have could generate. I had no idea that the sponsorships could be that lucrative (or the affiliate links). Thanks for putting this out there.
I’ve watched several of these and yours is the Best and most complete. Finally, I found a video that’s “good enough” that I can share with friends who are doing something similar or considering it. Thank you so much. You’re an inspiration in many ways. With pride, I have shared your work (i.e. tree house) with other folks.
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog You make hard work and courage look easy. Another reason this video was important to do. Inspiration with realistic expectations and solutions. DIY of DIY!
Hi Melissa. Lots of good information and I’m glad that doing something you’re passionate about makes you some money. I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and always enjoy your videos. I’ll admit that I clicked on the first video I watched because you’re stunningly beautiful. Of course I clicked. I’m a dude. (Trying not to be creepy, just honest). But I subscribed and stuck around because your content is really that good. You have a real passion for what you do. I’ve been doing remodeling/renovations professionally for 40+ years and believe it or not I’ve actually learned some tricks from you that I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of myself. Nailing a strip to the top plate of a wall behind crown molding comes to mind. Can’t believe I didn’t think of that and I’ve installed thousands of feet of crown molding. Now it’s standard practice. Watching your skills and confidence grow over the years has been a pleasure. I always look forward to what your gonna do next.
Melissa I’m always happy to see you succeed more and more. I pray God continues to bless you. Ur so talented and a real sweetie! I could watch ur videos all day. Wish I had time to do all you do. Ur such an inspiration. And by the way I use that magnetic measurer thing all the time. That company was so lucky to find you. God bless!!
Thank you so much for this! As someone who dabbles on the idea of recording videos (I don’t) on occasion and is in the same genre as yourself, this was super helpful. Do you edit your own videos? Any ideas for people who do not know how to or haven’t the time to edit their own content? That would definitely be the category I’d fall into. I simply do not have the time to edit. Recording alone is daunting! Again, thank you for your content and always being so up front and honest about the whole process. Have a great Sunday 🫶🏼
Hey Steve! Thanks so much for your comment. I do my own editing, though I’ve tried outsourcing a couple times. The style that goes best on my page is voiceover, so by the time I record all the footage and voiceover, piecing everything together would take just as much time as sending over all those pieces for an editor to do it. If I filmed more talking head style like this video or vlog style, it would be a lot easier to outsource the editing. So that being said, you could film vlog style and hire an editor to make all your footage curated and interesting.
This video was SO helpful Melissa thanks so much for sharing that info!! I’ve been working on my own DIY channel for some time and find you/ your content so inspiring ❤
Hi Melissa ❤ your videos. So much that sometimes I will binge watch them. Especially the Lake House! Through the current ones. Get so excited when notified of new ones. Keep it up!
Gracias Sra.
Thanks, that was a great . I've always wondered how that process worked. I've tried to let the commercials run hoping it rewarded your efforts. DIY Princess.
Totally depends on how much your audience wants to wear branded representation and what kind of shipping model you do. You can make good money if you take on all the shipping and packaging, but drop shipping companies you make sooo little.
This was very interesting. I didn't hear an average of how many sponsorships per month so I was unable to calculate an average monthly wage. There's a cooking channel I used to subscribe to that was always trying to get her viewers to follow her on Instagram. She pretty much made it sound like she barely made any money from RUclips and like she was doing us a favor by posting on RUclips. I really didn't appreciate that. I bought her e-book and cookbook because of her RUclips channel. I think her subscriber count was close to yours. I personally don't like Instagram because I like long-form videos, not reels or shorts. Anyway, I enjoy your content and am happy you are able to make a living from it.
Huh, that’s interesting to me. My Instagram makes the smallest amount of money between the four social platforms I have a large following on. It’s funny how it can be so different person to person. I am currently publishing at a rate of 2-3 videos per month and they are always sponsored.
Hey Melissa, thanks for sharing this info. I've always wondered about this subject and as always you never cease to disappoint with what you share with us. Thanks again. Ok gotta go cuz the police are here again so I need to make another run for Tijuana. Later tater.
I have no desire to make a RUclips channel but this was very interesting. You make great content so you deserve everything you make and more My only question is when do we get a Welcome to the woods product line of some sort? Maybe partner with a paint company for a paint kit line or something?
I did a test sample of merch with my Courage Over Confidence baseball hats last winter, I had several people request the merch, show excitement, and say they were going to order but when it came down to it they didn’t. This indicates the price was too high, but I was only making a couple bucks per hat because the cost of the manufacturer/drop shipping was so expensive. In the end I lost like $500 trying to launch a product. So I’m a bit gun-shy to do it again.
I get it. Im a man so I would go for something like a hoodie that just says "Welcome to the Woods" on it or something similar but I understand why you wouldn't want to try it again. I've been with you for a long time now and ill be here to support you however I can
Loose lips sink ships, many fans adore you and wish you a most happy holiday season. I used to work in very heavy construction mainly men, but had crews of women, they out preformed the baby cries three times easy, respect to the females, never underestimate your enemy boys
I really appreciate the insight in your monetization and explaining some of the mechanisms of RUclips's algorithm. However I still struggle understanding how much an impact RUclips shorts have on getting better known on the platform. Have you more information about that point?
I think Shorts is an excellent avenue for reaching new audiences and growing subscriber counts, but oftentimes those folks don’t translate to long-form viewers. Shorts can be monetized, but the rpm is crazy low. Like I said in the video, I make at least $7 RPM on my long-form videos, but my best rate on shorts has been $0.50 RPM. So ideally you’re growing long-form viewers to monetize your channel and the way you do that is by publishing long-form content.
Great video. I suspect there are other incomes that you do not cover here that you are involved in because what you described does not seem like enough for your family to live on.
Each social platform makes money, but they are each their own animal! It's crazy how different the algorithms are and how often they change the revenue structures. I make the bulk of my income on YT, but I do make money through my other channels as mentioned.
That is actually less than I thought you make.....there is a lot that goes into to making your videos....I am surprised you are able to support the whole family on that income.
So I just broke out my RUclips revenue in this video, I do make income from my large Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook channels as well as ad revenue from my blog.
I thought with as many subscribers a RUclipsr might make a little more. I teach high school construction classes and we make little “Pinterest sheds” I’ve thought about making a how to channel around this content during summer months. Do you think there is an audience for this?
Yes, but that might be too narrow of a niche for you to publish enough videos to capture an audience. I struggle with limitations due to weather as well, building outside in Minnesota is miserable half the year. But ideally you should publish year round and I’m not sure you could create content on just Pinterest sheds all year every year??
You discussed sponsorships in the context of them paying you to promote their product. What wasn't discussed was the products that were given to you to use in your videos. Are you taking those into consideration in your "income"? - Chris
No, I do not consider physical products as income. I cannot pay my bills with cookware or rugs. This is not to say it doesn’t matter when it’s tax time, it just isn’t monetary income.
If you watch the video it breaks it down for ya 😊 of course things fluctuate a bit month to month based on the rate I’ve negotiated with various video sponsors.
I'm a man and know men suck, like cry babies, I take care of six giant labs I took in rescue, my dogs cuddle buddies, they'll leave it up to me to take care of any human, cause i'm human not dog, in my humble homestead us here we have each other's back
From Merriam-Webster website: We must confess that of the charges leveled against irregardless, the one asserting that it is not actually a word puzzles us most. If irregardless is not a word, then what is it, and why is it exciting so many people who care about words? Of course it is a word. You may, if you like, refer to it as a bad word, a silly word, a word you don't like, or by any one of a number of other descriptors, but to deny that a specific collection of letters used by many people for hundreds of years to mean a definite thing is a word is to deny the obvious.

Instream Ads - $2-3k per month
Brand Sponsor Ad Integrations ~ $3k per video
