- A French Christmas market is a magical place and a great way to see French Christmas traditions in action. From the French Christmas food and drink like vin chaud to the artisanal wares and the decor, you have to visit a marché de Noël if you find yourself in France during the holiday season. In this video, we go to the Angers Christmas Market so you can see what it's all about and experience this very special part of French culture.

Hi Diana, I’m French born in Strasbourg. Just a little precision, it’s german tradition, that’s why in France Christmas Market started in regions with German culture, Alsace and Moselle.
There are 3 famous Christmas Market, Strasbourg on the Cathedral’s square, Colmar in the old town and Metz.
Thank you Diana for your RUclips channel, I never miss your videos!
Exactly, those are such beautiful markets!! So glad you enjoy my channel!
I would definitely be at the wine stand tasting that cointreau laced concoction followed up with some pistache macarons. Sorry if I mispelled it. Wish I could be there for Christmas! Maybe next year....
My husband and I have been watching your videos on RUclips for a while. We hope to spend a few months over there sometime next year but waiting on the covid scene to ease so that the travel is not so restricted. Have been studying my French in the meantime ..175 continuous day streak so far on Duolingo. Love your posts and will continue to watch here and there.
I love this!!! 🙌🏻🇫🇷 Keep it up! I need to check out that language school-sounds like fun!
Bon courage pour notre langue qui n'est pas si facile, mais nous serons indulgents, bien sûr !
We just returned to the US from France, Czech Republic and Germany. Loved the markets in France.
Thank you for sharing. Happy Christmas to you as well.
Thank you for taking us with you on your walk through the Christmas market. If I was there, I'd want one of everything and TWO raclettes, si vous plaît :)
You're very welcome!
Just lovely! Thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome, Susan!
Thank you for the beautiful Christmas market tour.
Everything looks so yummy!
It looks like slot of fun! TY for sharing😀
I’m rewatching this in December 2023. I think it will become an annual tradition for me.
Even before watching the video, I will say, food! This is France after all!
This makes me want to visit during the holiday season, for sure. So many curiosities!
Most of the larger villages in England had a market once a week. Some of the larger towns had permanent markets. I miss that. They also did warm mulled wine for Christmas. And a warm alcoholic spiced cider called wassail.
adore you... thank you.. Merry Christmas!!!!
@2:00 ~ 2:25 : anyone wondering, the sausage stall guy is just enumerating the different kind of cheeses and spices (espelette spice most notably) he made saucisson with. made me water my mouth and I just ate a couple minutes ago :D
So so beautiful! So festive !
What fun! Joyeux Noel!
So beautiful and festive. Thank you for taking us along. 🎄
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fun walk. Merry Christmas!🎄
Thank you, Diane! I love the Christmas markets in Europe!
Great episode Diane, thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing this with us, Diane! It brought back some great memories of the time when I visited the Christmas market in Strasbourg. I could practically smell the vin chaud from your video! Joyeux Noël !
Thank you for sharing the yummy treats from the Angers Christmas Market. Happy you are enjoying the season and stay safe. ❤🎄👍
My pleasure!
That was so charming. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
So cute!!! I’ll never have that pass to get in, so it’s great to see the video. :) I visited the Loire Valley in 2005-such a wonderful place and wonderful people! 🇫🇷🎄❤️
Great video Thanks for sharing
Such a lovely video thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love European Christmas markets! Thanks so much for the tour. I would have liked a peak inside your bag though! LOL! Joyeux Noel!
Thank you! Jealous😉! Beautiful! Merry Christmas🌲❄
Joyeux Noël!!!
Thank you for giving us a taste of France. I really enjoy your video's from my couch in South Africa.
Your market looks sweet! There were lovely ones in Rennes when I lived there. My little village will have their market this weekend-for two days. Last year, there were no little cabins, but big tents. It looks very different from your market. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.
Merry Christmas !!! :D
Joyeux Noel, Diane!
Merci !
That looks incredible! Even romantic! Merry Christmas to you and Tom!
Same to you! Merci!
Mmmmm I love raclette! And the saucisson. I’m hungry lol. Thank you for a lovely video and all the videos this year! Merry Christmas to you Diane and to your husband. All the very best for 2022!
Thanks very much, Andy! Happy Holidays to you as well!
Omg! I had my first visit to a Xmas market in Brest 2 years ago. I totally would love to go to another one. Love the vin chaud
Just saw the carousel working at the tail end of the video. Love it how it closes out your video.
Bonjours Diane, Merci ! That’s as much French as I am fluent with. It was so lovely to see your version of a French Christmas market. Here in Canada this pandemic time has found Canadian merchants, especially craft merchant and smaller vendors transitioning to their version of outdoor Christmas markets, all across our nation. In Nova Scotia we have several outdoor markets along our ocean front city right on the beautiful waterfronts and boardwalks. Thanks to many European market models, Canadian merchants are adapting the best they can to our weather and outdoor shopping even in winter. I have enjoyed one in the nearby city of Halifax, NS. I may not get to enjoy a French Christmas market except thru someone like your eyes but I can enjoy our markets now and will try to video a short market visit maybe someday soon. Joyeux Noel to your family on both sides of our world. My thoughts are with you this Christmas when I know you would so want to be close to your maternal family. Love and light to you. Be kind to yourself.
L❤️VE from the PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Oh I do miss the Christmas markets! I lived in Aix-en-Provence and the markets were wonderful. Thank you for sharing yours.
You are so welcome!
Oh how I miss the Christmas Marches! I was in Lille when I went to my first one. I wasn't able to go to the Strasbourg one. I so long to take my family back and visit the Strasbourg Christmas Marche when we can someday! Oh the smells of roasted almonds and hot chocolate! YUM!!!! Joyeux Noel!
You are going to be a celebrity in Angers. Not many American women with a RUclips channel that is almost half of the size of the population of the city !! (70 k soon, Angers is 155 k)
;-))))))))))))
Nice
The Christmas Markets of Europe are simply amazing. Last week I was in Paris with the intention of hitting 5 of the best ones, on foot. I was only able to make it to 2. The one located in Le Jardin des Tuileries was the best. The one at Saint-Germain-des-Pres only had 4-5 booths. We couldn't find the one near the Hotel de Ville, and since we were starving at this point, we went back to Le Jardin des Tuileries. The other good one is in La Defense, but I didn't get there this time. Ooh! Abondance cheese. My favorite.
Diane, merci pour ces sujets sur notre pays ! C'est toujours intéressant de voir un œil étranger sur notre mode vie et toutes nos habitudes.
Il faut préciser à nos amis étrangers que la liqueur de Cointreau est fabriqué à Angers.
Great job of it! Next year will you be touring Tours or Nantes for those Xmas markets!
I don't even know what I'm doing tomorrow let alone next year! ;-)
Very nice video. I discovered tartiflette at such a market in Paris 20+ years ago and have been making it regularly since. The raclette sandwich looks decadent. Yummy.
It's so good!
Hi Diane. This was fabulous! Entertaining and informative. It’s so nice to see your town. Christmas is my birthday but I’ve yet to spend it in France. Perhaps next year! But my favorite time to visit is in January. All the decorations and festivities continue and the food offerings are the best.
Happy (early) birthday!
Wonderful video, Diane! Update: We bailed on the trip after all. Too much Omicron-uncertainty and stress about what would happen once we got to France. A disappointment, but no big deal financially as everything was refundable. (A big "shout out" to Air France! They chose to give us a full refund on our tickets that were only refundable with vouchers. So, they've just made themselves a new, loyal customer. I cannot envision a US air carrier doing that.) The current plan is now to fly over either this summer or fall - -- COVID-willing.
Oh wow, that's great about the refund. France will be happy to see you come summer or fall. Happy Holidays to you!
Thanks Diane. The whole "cancellation situation" is more annoying than disheartening. In the "grander scheme of things" it's pretty minor. Now that I have no excuse for not learning French, I need to get cracking on that task. Any sage advice? Specifically, any opinion on classes through "Alliance Francais"? They have classes held on Zoom (from their nearby Sacramento office). I notice that the classes are not cheap, but that's ok if the instruction quality/pedagogy is good. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for showing us a French Christmas market, I've only seen German ones before.
You’re welcome 😊
Joyeux Fete to you as well Diane.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed this one!
@@OuiInFrance love it for sure.
Sorry I had to stop at 3'30 as I was about to lick my screen.
hahhaha
I'd be at the vin chaud and then the carousel if it was open during the Marche Noel. I love carousels.
Ohhh the fromage! But then I got distracted by your gorgeous nails Diane 😊
Oh thank you!
I love your French accent. I am not an expert but you sound so authentic to me. I love saucison! In France
Thank you!
I'm living just 50 kilometers away 😀
I wish we had Christmas markets in the US, it’s a tragedy!
There are a few. There’s one in downtown D.C. all December.
We have Christmas markets in PA. I love going to them.
There's a large Christkindlmarkt (German style Christmas market) in downtown Chicago
It's definitely a whole other level in France!
Chicago and Denver also have one
Well usually they r more active at night. If u visit later many families and couples gather there.
Meat, cheese & macarons 🥰🥳😎
Thanks for the video. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the Abondance cheese: I wanted to lick the screen! 🤩🤤 It's almost impossible to find good quality but reasonably priced French cheeses in Ohio! 😣 Bummer!!!!! 💝🧀🍾
It's a delicious one, that's for sure!
Even here good authentic cheese isn't the cheapest food, but I'm sure many reasons make this even more true on the other side of the ocean.
(I had been told that "more" is relevant only for long adjectives, BUT I'll never be brave enough to try "truer" instead of "more true").
I would've wanted to see more things for sale other than the food. Still an interesting video, though
Ooo- fun. It didn’t look very busy. Is that typical? Does it get busier in the evening? Is it open every day or only on the weekends? I would love to eat my way through the market. Big sigh. Thanks for the tour!
I guess Diane filmed during work hours on a weekday so that’s why.
Hi Sherry, I went right when it opened on Monday to avoid the crowds. Lunchtime gets a little busier during the week as you saw when I pointed out the line for raclette sandwiches. But Friday nights and weekends are the busiest times. Glad you enjoyed it!
Compared to Germany, it's much the same, but you won't find cheese on a German Christmas market. And the sweets are probably heavier: spiced cakes, filled doughnuts, etc.
Oh that's interesting that you won't find cheese. Mostly sweet stuff?
What was in the booth at 3:45 with the Canadian flags?
Looks like maple syrup and related products. Québec maple syrup is becoming quite popular in France
There is a Canadian booth in the Annecy christmas market too. They sell mapple sirup, Sortilege Whisky, and ... POUTINE ! ❤❤❤
Yes, SayIt below is correct. Maple syrup and related products ;-)
That was fun. I would have liked to have seen it lit up
I did enjoy it except I wish you would’ve stopped and lingered at the ornament display!! Merry Christmas!!
I didn't see one!
A raclette SANDWICH??? 🤤 I'M THERE! 😁 I wish we had more Christmas Markets like this. My little city has a pop-up Christmas craft market, but that's not quite the same.
Shame I will never be able to go to France again.😢
Here's a little warning: I have seen cheeses sold 80% more expensive at the Xmas market than what my fromager sells them for at the regular market. Caveat Emptor!
On the other hand I have found great maple syrup at the Xmas market I had not seen elsewhere.
Yes, totally true! The Christmas markets aren't where I go to get a deal but they sure are a fun, festive experience ;-)
What kind of Christmas do you prefer ? In France with Tom's family or in US with Tom in your family ?
I think I associate Christmas with my childhood and simpler times so a US Christmas will always win. There are major pluses to Christmas in France but for me, the atmosphere of a US Christmas is the best. This year will be the first one without my mom so it'll be... hard. Several years ago my parents came and celebrated Christmas in France with my in-laws and I'll always remember that special experience that we unfortunately can't recreate.
Happy holidays. How’s the gay community in France ? Do they look down on’em? Loads of get together places ? What else can u tell us ? Thanks.
Hi, I'd say France is pretty accepting and open overall but of course you can find idiots everywhere. There are gay bars and pride parades and that sort of thing. People are openly gay in France.
@@OuiInFrance stay blessed.
you too!
Just as Diane wrote. Since same sex marriage and adoption were fully legalised 10 years ago, things have gone very smoothly. Apparently the Earth is still spinning, “western civilisation” hasn’t collapsed, so I guess we can move on:-) Cheers;-)
What jumps out at me is the vendors handling the food AND money with the same ungloved and (I assume) unwashed hands. Ewww.
Looks pretty empty. Maybe not enough vaccinated people
Early on a Monday so people were at work. Toward the end you can see the line for the raclette sandwiches ramping up as employees head out for lunch.
Vaccines don’t stop the spread of covid. Everyone should quit having a proof of vaccination mandate just to enter places.
