Actually, Meccano has been around a tiny bit longer than Erector, but was more popular in the UK, while Erector was more popular in the US. (I actually had both when I was a kid -- I grew up in Canada where both were available.) At some point Meccano bought the Erector name, and so modern day Erector sets actually are Meccano sets with a different name.

I'd just like to chirp in here. -I'm from Denmark; and played with Lego and Meccano.
Fancy that: Toys from the end of the Victorian era being so very useful still :3

That is a stunning bit of mechanics, I hate to think what adjustments were involved or what happens if a screw loosens.

heh, funny story about the difference engine.
it was designed in the mid-1800's, but never built, because it was too complicated.
the first time someone actually built it, it required the use of modern computer-aided drafting to build. Ironic, huh?

@richardkelltoolmaker I believe it was set up to calculate trigonometric tables. sin(x), if I remember correctly.

I think Babbage would have given his left testicle to own a nice Meccano set like that.

Nobody built this. Billions of years ago mechanical parts blew up and this evolved.

    Can't build that with Lego.
    Or can you? ;-)
