Tyler was asked to write a song for Suicide Squad after they had gained lots of new fans following the release of their album blurryface. He said he imagined he was bringing a friend to meet the 'villains' of the movie and how he would prepare his friend for the meeting. He also wrote it to explain to the mainstream audience about the 'clique', their fans, to explain that they are worth listening to, they have dealt with a lot, but to tread lightly around them because they are powerful and passionate.
LOL totally agree...I could imagine Josh as a type of familiar and Tyler as a kind of pied piper in the Superhero context...talk about an OP power...just being able to use music to turn the worst or the best person into a dancing fool...if you can tap out a beat, you can control anyone...and if you are alive, you have a heartbeat...which would make the user basically able to control anyone...
It's black paint on Tyler's hands and neck rather than a tattoo and yes it is a visual representation of his insecurities. It was used during the Blurryface era, Blurryface being the personification of those insecurities. So, the black paint is a way of representing Blurryface's presence and hold on his life. Tyler said in interviews that his insecurites feel suffocating, hence the black neck. And that an aspect of his insecurities is putting his music out into the world to be judged, hence the black hands, that he makes music with. It's very much a symbolic thing.
I’m a 66 year old grandma that started listening to them back in 2015 because by grandson shared my iTunes account and now I just love them. My grandson has seen them twice now in concert and said you really can’t explain how amazing they are. So I would watch in this order: Heavydirtysoul, Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, Levitate, Saturday, and The Outside. That crosses 3 albums and the next album will conclude the storyline. And it’s not a tattoo on his neck and hands, it’s black paint that represents his fears, insecurities, anxieties. It’s a representation of Blurryface and the control that he has over what Tyler creates. The Jumpsuit video shows it.

We definitely want you to react to their newer music, but there's a story being told (the lore), and so first you need to know them. That's why we want you to start with some of the older stuff.

That song have always played at the very end of the concerts when everyone is leaving. I think as more music is discovered via streaming platforms than local radio stations, genre has become less important. You used to have to fit into a box to get play from a particular radio station that catered to specific genres in order to get exposure. That's sorta faded away and I think it's allowed more creative and less defined musical artists that enjoy all sorts of music and want to make music they themselves would want to listen to.
You talk about groups that are mixing genre's, you should check out Electric Callboy, especially "We got the moves." But most of their songs mix a few different types.
If you want a newer song, check out "Redecorate". I cried the first time I heard it but it's one of me favorite songs off their latest album. The Outside is also super catchy...but you don't know the lore yet so I wouldn't watch the music video if I were you just a lyrics video until you've gotten caught up in the lore
