Jason, you have already discovered the secret of great bass playing - it’s all about the ‘1’. If you hit a ‘good’ note on the downbeat that’s reasonably close to the kick drum, you’ve got beats 2-3-4 to wander the neck, hit a clam or 2, and go chromatically walkabout before hitting the next ‘1’ on beat and on pitch. That’s 90% of the battle. And you’re nailing those downbeats - kudos!
