Triads on Guitar: What's the Point???

  • There are a number of videos on triads on the guitar here already, but the thing that many videos miss out is that we need to do more than just memorize triad shapes on the guitar fretboard. When I teach guitar lessons here in Vancouver I always get my students to memorize how the triad chord shapes fit the Major Pentatonic scale shapes. Every chord has a scale that goes with it. This way we can combine chords and scales at the same time, add chords into our solos, or combine short licks when playing rhythm guitar.
    In this lesson you'll learn how to play the three most common triad shapes on the guitar using a combination of the D, G and B strings. In our Patreon this week we will study how to quickly shift from the I chord to the IV chord using these same triad shapes, and connect to the Major Pentatonic scale of the IV chord too!
    On our Patreon group we will have more licks for each shape in tabs, plus the jam track. Join our Patreon group at / guitarlessonsvancouver
    Books by Blue Morris are available on Amazon, details at www.bluemorris...
    Thanks to our Patreon Rockstar sponsors for helping to make these videos possible!

    I often (but not always) use my index finger to bar strings 1 thru 4 for underlying C shape triads so I can hammer on or pull off the ring finger on string 4. Can also hammer on middle and ring fingers simultaeously for that Keith Richards thing. It also puts the index finger in a good position for playing “funny B string” pentatonic licks on strings 1-4.

    Another great lesson. One thing that helped me was to look at a picture of the fretboard with all the notes on it. I figure out the root, third and fifth for a chord and just scan the paper looking for any of the the three notes. When I find one I look for the other two and they are usually right there and you can figure out the triad for your self instead of looking at a book. When you search it out for yourself it also seems to be easier to remember. I then repeat it for each note until I do the exercise for all 7 notes.. I need to figure out arpeggios and modes one day...

    Excellent insightful lesson. Until you start doing livestreams can I ask a question? I understand the scales with the first 2 triad shapes but I do not understand the scale with the 3rd triad shape. The scale you are using looks like box 4 of the F#m pentatonic scale. How does this fit with an A triad?

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver
      @GuitarLessonsVancouver  9 месяцев назад

      Good question. Every Minor Pentatonic has a relative Major Pentatonic with the same notes. That Shape 4 F#m Pentatonic is also A Major Pentatonic (root on the A string pinky finger). So all the shapes in this triad video are both A Major and F# Minor. More info about how that works in this video ruclips.net/video/2vXMecfmhdc/видео.html

      @@GuitarLessonsVancouver Thanks for your reply. I understand the concept of the relative minor. I think what threw me off was that for the first 2 triad shapes you were using Box 1 and Box 2 of the A minor pentatonic scale but then you use Box 4 of the relative minor on the 3rd triad shape. That hurts my brain.

      I plan to have videos of varying length and detail. It's surprising what does well on RUclips and what does not. It's not what you would think! Besides that, musicians hear this kind of complaint all the time. A standard answer is: Would you ask a chef to cook for free? You just wanna eat, right? We all have to make a living. You probably have a job. Do you do it for free? If we couldn't make a living doing guitar lessons, none of these videos would be here. There might be some who would teach for free but likely the quality of instruction would be low. The best teachers are the ones who have had the time to develop their craft and their teaching skills. How do they get good at that? By having the time to get good at teaching... gaining experience as a paid teacher. I've been doing this a long time. I'm glad you're learning from the videos, and there will be many more to come. Some long, some short. But I can't do them for free. I have bills to pay and loved ones to take care of.

    forget altering your lesson format, imho. These - group- question and answer things just end up being a waste of time , often with , quite frankly, stupid questions from the audience. You lose FOCUS and consistent emphasis of the core material that is so important to getting the lesson down. I cant tell you how many u tube seminars I have gone to , and found them taken up by - morons - who stole my and the instructors time asking silly and or irrelevant questions. YOU are the teacher, laser like focus is requisite.

    But... No, no, NO! 6:14
    That "easyshape A" is A Major pentatonic, NOT A minor! You can't play the same licks from minor P in the Major P shape. They just don't sound right!
    Sorry, i couldn't watch after that, you just totally lost me.
    I usually love your videos, this one lost me close to the beginning.

      You can play the same licks in Minor Penta as Major Penta, but they resolve differently. So we need to memorize the roots, among other intervals, of each so that we can use or alter licks we have for both. Hope that helps.
