I am from Baton Rouge, 70 miles north of New Orleans and the meat and cheese quality on the Muff...is not comparable to meats in Italy, for sure.... Excellent job picking to get the Iconic "Hot Roast Beef Poboy" from Parkway Bakery...Parkway Bakery was started by 3 brothers who did different jobs at the bakery and as each brother passed away the bakery stopped doing that job. One made the sandwiches, one made the bread and one, I think delivered the bread to stores. The last brother left alive made the sandwiches and around 2000-2001 he passed and his son closed the bakery and the building was demolished.
A person, or restaurant group purchased the property and rights to the name and REBUILT the building Just As It looked when the first building was there....
My father would bring me there when I was a child and in 2001, when I was 37, I went by for a HRB Poboy and all that was left was the old brick ovens they used to bake the bread in...
About 10 years later I heard about the new restaurant and went to find it....when I laid eyes on the new building I started to cry.... I didn't realize it, but the old place had become a part of my soul, and was So Happy to see the new owners brought back the old style in the new building.....Will Always be a gem in my heart in New Orleans....the best Poboys in New Orleans...
    C'est si bon!

I love the muffuletta sandwich, but I also love olives and I got mine at Frank’s in New Orleans. It was huge and it was warm. Plus it was an experience there in the restaurant and had tiramisu for dessert. I also enjoy a good Po Boy, but it’s two different sandwiches so I can’t compare the two. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. I think y’all should do a day of sampling one sandwich at different establishments it rate from worse to best and another sandwich rating on another day from different establishments. Alessio might actually find a muffuletta he likes. 😉

They make a much better muffuletta at Cochon Butcher in the warehouse district. It's not as greasy or salty as the one from Central Grocery. It's also expensive, at $18 for a smaller sandwich than they make at Central Grocery. They make all their own cured meats at Cochon Butcher and its sister restaurant Cochon.
I love a fried oyster po' boy, fully dressed with Crystal hot sauce.

I have spent a lot of time in New Orleans. And I never loved the Muffluletta from Central Grocery. I think they dumbed it down from the old days perhaps. I don't like that it is a cold sandwich. It may have been great at one point but it is now a tourist trap. There is a restaurant a half block away called Franks that is better. They toast the bread, heat the meat a bit and the olive spread is also better.

You should try a place called Liuzza's.. They have a sandwich there called a Frenchaletta... has your usual suspects for a mufaletta...but they cooks it on a flattop to crisp up the meats a bit..and they put it in a french baguette...freaking delicious! And the roast beef po'boy is yummy too (get extra beef gravy on the side to dip)

Jessi, I think that the biggest problem is that very much like Allesio trying the Italian American restaurants is that he always compares anything said to be Italian with what he has experienced in Italy. And Italian American has evolved so far away from true Italian, mostly to satisfy the American palate.
When he eats any other food: BBQ, Southern, New Orleans, etc., he does not compare them to anything and for the most part, he loves them. I have to wonder what his response would have been had he not been told that the Mufaletta was Italian.

I also prefer a dipping sauce like marinera some use ranch. Muffuletta is great and like I say i have never eaten a cold one. No olive sauce, no muffuletta!!! Po boy is the best sammich in louisiana though. In New Orleans you will get a lot of the creole food. You have to get out of new orleans to get really good cajun food! The 2 are completely different although they are the same dish. For instance Crawfish etouffee, Cajun and Creole are completely different recipes.

This may be the first time that I am actually disappointed in one of your reviews. Immigrants to the US, no matter where they came from, had to adjust to what was locally available at the time. Many iconic foods were born. These foods often bear little resemblance to the ethnic original they were based on. You are certainly entitled to not like something, but your criticism here was simply over the top. I am German born and raised with the passport to privet. All most my entire adult life I have lived in the US and have come to appreciate regional favorites based on different dishes from around the world. I love me a good Hamburger. It is nothing like the Hamburger steak it is based on, which was from the actual city of Hamburg, my hometown.

"French fried" poor boys are absolutely delicious, and they are the original "poor boy" sandwich when they were created to feed striking streetcar workers with little money to spend on food. The sandwich is simply French fries covered in roast beef debris (gravy with bits of meat), mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles (dressed). Every poor boy restaurant makes them, and they are still the most inexpensive poor boy sandwich on any menu in NOLA. Cheers!

Muffaletta needs to be pressed badly. Heat would help. Even then it's only a 7.5/10 max. Cold and unpressed it's bad. Maybe 1.5/10. The pressing gets all the oils, juices and fats to combine and penetrate that bread.

Central Grocery's Muffuletta is purely awful tourists' crap/trap. Buffalatta s a perfect description of it. It's all premade, dry and cold after sitting on the back counter in the mornings. Central Grocery's sandwiches do a severe dis-service to the NOLA culinary scene and should be disowned by the city's chamber of commerce. There are alot better Muffuletas elsewhere in the city/Garden District which are freshly made and hot pressed ... Liuzza's By The Track makes killer BBQ Shrimp Po Boys in a Pistolette in addition to their superior muffuleta! They also have great locals atmosphere although parking can be a challenge.

I grew up in N'Awlins and the Market's not been the same since Katrina. When I was a kid, their muffalettas were the bomb. OK, roast beef is good, but dressed oyster po'boy? *Now* you're talking!

Plus look at that cheese on the Italian one from Italy. It was more like the mozzarella cheese with that cream in it. My brain just went blank and I can’t remember the name.

Come Back Inn’s muff is $17 for a whole muff with far more meat. It’s the best in the GNO area and is fabuloso.
    You’re welcome. 😊

You are eating it cold. It is a completely different experience if it is hot with melted cheese and toasted sesame seeds. Central Grocery is selling them cold at the grocery next door while they are closed for repairs.

It’s still the same sand which made with very low quality Deli meats. To an Italian, this is not an impressive sandwich

I would think TN BBQ would be better. One uses a mustard base and another is vinegar I think. Anyway I had some bbq in SC my daughter hired a bbq chef for a party and omg. Best bbq and sauce I ever had. I love my ribs to be falling off the bones and my other meats so tender that u don’t need to serve me a knife with my fork.

I’ve never been a fan of the muffuletta either. Shrimp poorboy (in New Orleans) on the other hand, is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.

The one we had was great. It was freshly made. You used poor judgement to buy one prepackaged.

The problem with your tasting of the Central Grocery muffuletta was that you weren't also sitting on the Moonwalk benches by the Mississippi river and drinking a Barq's root beer out of a glass bottle.
