His comedy has stood the test of time appealing to the majority of people in many countries, history is confirming that he was a comic genius, it’s a shame the PC brigade had, and still has such a strong influence over the media, which sadly and ultimately brought his demise.
Just hearing his name makes me smile 😊 Thanks for the memories Benny RIP hope to see you in heaven chasing those sexy angles around and playing your song ha ha
David Topchiev Thanks you reminded me of Ernie. I just enjoyed hearing it again after all these years. I remember it was on top of the pops. What a laugh 😂
I still enjoy watching the his show on RUclips. He couldn't do that today, too many people would get a Boo Boo on their feelings. Too uptight to laugh. How sad.
I grew up in France in the 80s and the 90s, it was not liked, it was adored, an absolute star, the show was put on the best TV hours during at least five years in a row, as their were considered ultra prime. Thanks a lot Benny, great laughs and many moments that make me forgot my problems. RIP.
You think the way John Howard Davies lowered the curtain on Hill was bad, there were far worse, namely in the United States: - In 1970, CBS cancelled "The Jackie Gleason Show" after years of falling ratings and ballooning budgets, exacerbated by his 1964 move to Miami Beach; in spite of the high budgets, many of his shows looked like cheap dinner theatre in those last years. Neither Gleason, nor his manager/producer/business partner Jack Philbin, nor his agent Sam Cohn, were invited to Black Rock (CBS's corporate HQ in NYC) to get the bad news; Gleason, in fact, read about the cancellation in the newspaper. - In 1955, Buick decided to switch its sponsorship from Milton Berle's variety show (which was close to its last legs) to a new half-hour version of "The Honeymooners" (the Classic 39 that has since become familiar for decades). Berle only found out Buick made the switch by reading a headline in weekly Variety about it.
I was very fortunate to see repeats of his shows on ThatsTV over Christmas 2021. I did remember his shows as a kid and always loved them. This time round as an adult I adored them. They still make me laugh now, which isn’t always the case revisiting childhood stuff. Benny Hill was a comic genius, we could so do with him in 2022
I'm a lifelong Benny Hill fan, but his last three shows which were shown a year or two after his death were sad to watch. Unlike most comedians Benny wrote all his own material and his time had come to retire but, the way he was treated was a downright disgrace...he was called into the new bosses office which he thought was to sign his usual contract for a series of shows, only to be told 'we don't want you anymore'. Then he was gone without a word of thanks for the estimated 35 million pounds his shows had made for the TV company with Benny's shows being bought by countless countries all over the world where, they are still being shown today ...Benny could never understand why he had been suddenly rejected and in some quarters reviled in his own country. The talentless slackarsed Ben Elton actually wrote a column in a daily paper blaming the Benny Hill show for the increasing level of rape which was occurring at that time in the UK. Denis Kirkland who was his lifelong friend said this was the final straw that completely destroyed Benny and while Elton was sued and the newspaper had to pay substantial damages to Benny ( which went to charity) it was too late, Benny had lost the will too live. But of course while Benny was a gifted comedian, he was also a man without the comfort and support of a family who could have given his something to live for when his show ended. But his work was his life and for a man who brought so much laughter into peoples lives, to end up as he did makes one wonder if there really is a God...I'd say no!
Dennis Kirkland, in a sense, was to blame for the direction the show went after 1979, sadly playing into the hands of slandermongers like Elton. Kirkland had extremely antediluvian attitudes towards women, and he believed to his dying day in 2006 that people mainly watched the show for the girls and little else. His comments in various documentaries did nothing to dispel the impression that he was a total creep, and one ex-Angel - while speaking fondly and warmly of Hill - didn't have much a kind word to say about Kirkland, practically outing HIM as the guilty party in terms of the charges of the show "objectifying" and "degrading" women. And much to the detriment of his own show, Hill trusted Kirkland and his judgment far too much and for far too long. This is made even more painfully clear if you read reviews of his shows from various publications in the '50's and '60's when he was with the BBC. Not a word about skirt-chasing or scantily clad women in sight. But a lot about his impersonations, his parodies, his multiple characters in one sketch, occasionally his musical guests, and so on.
Ernie Wise hit the nail right on the head there when he said the words "If it makes you laugh..." because surely that is what comedy is all about. Benny Hill made lots and lots of people laugh. That was his gift and it was taken away from him. His death may have been a heart attack but I suspect he died because his heart was broken by the idiot who cancelled his show. As for his show being offensive to women, how about asking the women who worked on his show?
The only women I know of who were offended by Hill's show were the mean-faced, clipped-haired, fat-hipped lot. But having said that . . . unfortunately, the direction the show took especially after Dennis Kirkland took over as producer/director played straight into their hands.
This man put so much smile's on people's faces & they took his programme off the air that's what killed him. And all the s*** what's on now it's a "BLOODY" disgrace. R.I.P' SIR Benny Hill ❤. laughing is the best medicine
Hill, especially after Thames cancelled his show, slid into alcoholism fueled by the depression brought about by the cancellation. Though no one said one way or the other, he also looked like a prime candidate for diabetes towards the end.
Offensive especially to women! So males running around pretending to be women isn't 🤔 I find telling little boys of 4 they can be girls offensive and telling little girls to be boys is offensive but I guess it's a funny old word
wutang6020 offensive to women if you didn't understand the humor. In all of his gags, the man came out on the short end including Benny. Not the women!
The media have agenda's that they want to push. In my opinion their main agenda was to turn Benny Hill and all those who love his style of comedy into loathsome pariahs and they did this by overplaying the criticisms of maybe a few thousand and made it sound like nobody liked him or his comedy any longer. Self-righteous condemnation on the part of programming executives was the ingredient that spelled the end for him at Thames TV in 1989. We're coming up on the 30th anniversary of Benny passing away...and judging the sizeable number of unique views his sketches are receiving online he's STILL having an impact with people.
LMAO so often watching Benny. My Mrs told me he was her mum's Milkman in Southampton. Thought she was kidding but as it turned out he WAS a milkman in Southampton.
Benny was one of the all time best.

This sad twisted world could do with Benny right now.....and that's the point....his humor wouldn't be allowed because everyone is too "special"
Sad but true state of the population right now.

Il aimait la France en France on l'adorais. .. Benny Hill le meilleur
Good old Ernie.
Frank Sinatra's favourite comedians were Don Rickles, Jack Benny and this man.
Yet one of Sinatra's good friends was Jackie Gleason, who reportedly introduced him to Jack Daniel's. Go figure.
RIP Benny

@@bhk5150 But did Benny Hill and the male cast run around with just their underpants on? THINK. Even his fans would have thought that gross.
