I remember that year. When they showed the top three, Ryan had big poster with the voting results....Taylor, Katherine and Elliott were only like 1.4 percentage points apart . Any of the 3 could have won. I couldn't believe Elliott wasn't offered a contract. He's such a good blues singer.
I know right nobody sings like that anymore I love him Adam how there was another guy there’s a couple of guys back then all of them kissing nobody can sing anymore now
In the music industry today, even with the most brilliant, most superb voice, in order to be a SUPERSTAR, it ALWAYS boils down to performing great songs by great song writers. And Elliott is SO WORTHY of STARDOM & of TRULY GREAT songwriters working with him.💕💕💕
Unbelievable! Incredible! I have loved this man since I first saw him on AI. I have watched this many times over the years and I still feel he is definitely one of the best vocalists to come from this show. This is one of my all time favorite songs and he certainly sang it so well. He should definitely be more famous than he is.
I really enjoyed this young man voice. He certainly did Donnie Hathaway song justice. He should be a big star right now. He can sing and he does have stage presence.
It's such a shame, but this type of music is dying! Soul is my favorite and Elliott is so talented! People just don't want to hear this type of music anymore! He should have won and had a fantastic career but this genre is unfortunately dying!
What everyone probably needs to know is that song song was written and performed by Donny Hathaway. Donny was an all time great vocalist and performed with enormous sincerity and passion. My R&B teacher in college said he could have been potentially as good a musician as the greatest R&B musician ever, Stevie Wonder. Donny had paranoid schizophrenia and committed suicide at a very young age, i think 33. So its poetic and tragic and beautiful and I think thats a big part of what made Paula emotional.
Easily best male vocalist the show has seen.... sand song choices like him... He should have sang “sitting on a dock on a bay” not Clive Davis “open arms”... it was still closest vote bet but Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee know darn well who the better singer is ... and it ain’t close .. He does things vocally they just cannot.... MASTERCLASS PWRFORMANCE!!
+Jessica Uyvette Thompson A good indicator of how well you're doing as a singer is when you make women cry. We are audible while men are visual creatures.
It’s funny how he changed his style … was no longer fading his hair … hmmm… he had a look that matched his voice that was somewhat soulful and black ….
I think Elliot lost because he song too many black soulful songs, song by black artist. This is american idol and they want to hear white songs thats why Taylor Hicks won and all he was an Elvis Impersonator not a singer. Yes i know Ruben Studdard & Fantasia won but still i feel thats the only reason elliot lost i mean there is no other explanation why the best male vocalist hands down no argument did not win this competition. look at 1:31 for an example of pure talent and vocal strength.
He didn't win AI because he, for the most part, chooses the wrong songs to sing, this song being the exception. This and a good arranger will make all the difference in a career going nowhere. Jazz is his calling!
This is the person who should have won that season......what a great, soulful, rich voice.

I agree!
Elliott is AMAZING. What a voice.
Paula is so right.... Loved her when she cried. She was feeling every word of that song.
Hard to believe Elliott is not a superstar now.. what is wrong with people. Don't get any better than this!!
Favorite Idol. Hands down.
Agreed. Very easy decision for me. I don't even watch the show much, but he made me watch that year.
This boy needs a bigger career. He is brilliant.
I AGREE.
He was my favorite male contestant ever on American idol
Elliott deserves far more than what he got! He’s the best
always liked eliot .
after listening to him again, I love him more.
rich voice.
Back when Idol was worth watching..This definitely is amongst the best moments of ANY series of A.I.....Brilliant
I know right nobody sings like that anymore I love him Adam how there was another guy there’s a couple of guys back then all of them kissing nobody can sing anymore now
Fave performance of Elliott. He was my choice that year !
He should have won that season

Elliot is my favorite American Idol contestant of all time. I was a kid when he was on and I was absolutely glued to the TV every time he was on
Unbelievable! Incredible! I have loved this man since I first saw him on AI. I have watched this many times over the years and I still feel he is definitely one of the best vocalists to come from this show.
This is one of my all time favorite songs and he certainly sang it so well.
He should definitely be more famous than he is.
I remember this and was suprised he never one. He clearly had a good attitude and can sing rings around people.
still..years later and I'm still moved by his voice
He should have won that season, in my opinion. Daughtry,Bennet, Yamin were my guess for who would win that season.
Best performance ever on Idol
pure class, a definition of perfection
I can’t tell what that was, but I truly felt something in his voice!! I guess that’s means he indeed performed really great! Awesomeness
prob best voice of all compettions in all singing shows.just a singer, nothing extravent, doesnt try to show off. just himself singing a song.
Nick Knowles whoa whoa, as much as I agree...there's still Ruben
I really enjoyed this young man voice. He certainly did Donnie Hathaway song justice. He should be a big star right now. He can sing and he does have stage presence.
never gets old ... my fav AI and performance!
old school and crazy good
Best performance ever on American Idol.
Yes!
He should have been a Grammy winner by now that´s how good he is!!!!
He was so underrated , what a voice
Sept 2024, Yamin is still as phenomenal today as he was back then.
I love Elliot Yamin
This man should be a superstar by now his voice I mean he has so much soul passion when he sings why is it he?
His fault for not writing better songs and not expanding further in sponsorship and producing.
omg the nostalgia!!!
one of my favorite idols
don't know what Randy was smoking. This is one of best performances in AI ever
One of my favorite male idols!
super love this classic....
It's such a shame, but this type of music is dying! Soul is my favorite and Elliott is so talented! People just don't want to hear this type of music anymore! He should have won and had a fantastic career but this genre is unfortunately dying!
41jacia hmm see there are very few people who still listen to his Music including me
Honestly, I miss AMerican Idol. I miss when it as good. I miss Randy, Paula and Simon.
David Foster is a genius!!! Love you Elliot!!!!

the smoothest jiggah since jon b
A new album is out in Japan right now!! It will be in the states soon. Check it out in iTunes!
The best
excellent!! just excellent!!...love it right behind Whitney's version, of course! but love it & still got love for Elliot!
Freakish talent....voice is gold, pure gold.
Freakish??? It’s funny … I bet most people never listened to Donny Hathaway or any other black soul singer ….
The Best....
He is all soul

Everyone knows.
Noooo written by the great Leon Russell
I still don't know how Taylor managed to snag the title from Katharine McPhee, Elliott Yamin and Chris Daughtry.

YES!!!!!
+Jessica Uyvette Thompson A good indicator of how well you're doing as a singer is when you make women cry. We are audible while men are visual creatures.
Yeah you played don't be afraid in the beginning
Unfortunately, American Idol was never about the voice… it was about marketability
It’s funny how he changed his style … was no longer fading his hair … hmmm… he had a look that matched his voice that was somewhat soulful and black ….
This song is not a love song. It's an apology the morning after a bender.
I mean when David foster who has seen the best says you sing well... come on he should have won.
I think Elliot lost because he song too many black soulful songs, song by black artist. Love Yamin but this is not his best. The song is very personal and needs to be sung as though to a one person not a crowd.
ma nikka is real
He should've won
Great rendition .but i was waiting for the money note
Damn Randy, there's nothing wrong with the arrangement. He just felt like he needed to throw some criticism for once.
Well they made it a little more complicated and the song is a little more simple is what he meant.
Sorry but there is no way he could beat Paris Bennett….. sorry ….
He didn't win AI because he, for the most part, chooses the wrong songs to sing, this song being the exception. This and a good arranger will make all the difference in a career going nowhere. Jazz is his calling!
Talent is talent is talent.....AI is a joke...he didn't need it.
I agree
