Your tips are spot on. After producing documentaries for 20 years, I can attest to the pause. The solid gold comes when you stop actually asking questions, and convert to listening, There is magic in the pause!

I am a rookie to docs, but have already experienced the importance of being prepared with the right questions, but the power of the pause is so true!!! The most emotional and best content I’ve captured on film came from a pause. Can’t wait for your course!

I've used that method where I just pause and wait for them to say something else. .and it usually leads to something great and will most likely make it into the cut.
Great video, glad to know I've been on the right track when approaching the interview section of a documentary.

I would like to start interviewing people on a complicated topic. What's stopping me is that I fear that they will talk completely over my head. One reason why I want to interview them is to ask them to explain concepts in lay person's terms. So, my question to you is - is it okay to sound ignorant during an interview? I hope to ask questions that they can answer in full so that my questions can be edited out. But, I know that having subjects answer questions in this manner is often challenging. What encouragement can you give me to go ahead and interview top thinkers on esoteric subjects? I will try to learn as much as I can first, but I fear this won't be enough...

Mark- for your course AOD I’m wondering about feedback. What should the expectation be? Will we get feedback and talking directly to you throughout? What format do we talk with other classmates and is everyone active? I’m in a course now and we never hear from the instructor besides the pre-recorded videos and only a couple classmates are actually really engaged in sharing and giving feedback. I like having deadlines, but the lack of feedback in my course is difficult.
Thanks! Your work is wonderful! Working on a short doc now about the unbelievable prevalence and impact of FASD, from a parents point of view :)

Hi Erin thanks for reaching out. When I made this video, nearly 2 years ago, I was hoping for our course to involve at least 50 students… since then we’ve grown to nearly 2000 and will add another couple hundred when we re-open the doors on March 7th. We do two 70min live zoom calls every month where students can ask us questions directly. That said, we don’t have the capacity for individual feedback for completed films or rough cuts unless people book through superpeer.com/markbone. We do have a private Facebook group with 1000 filmmakers where Students post their work continually. We are also starting a pilot project in the course right with the community to create “break out groups” where students meet on a regular basis to receive quality feedback on their work. Hope this helps
