Mark, I used your techniques to shoot my first documentary. I premiered this doc in two theaters last week and received some great news coverage for it from the local media. I just wanted to let you know I appreciated the great info you put out.
Capturing Information and emotion is something I’ve done naturally, because I like going deep, but I never had the framework or language to describe this. I appreciate you, Mark, for the framework which helps me be even more intentional.
@@markbone I went to join and it says 100 plus days and a waiting list. I'm inclined to think that's a stretch..but just wanted to point out that the landing page is frustrating the heck out of me because I want to join! lol
You're helping a lot of filmmakers, mostly most filmmakers here in my country can't afford to get a degree and filmmaking. Glad we have you! Thanks Mark!
I've been doing this a long time and I'm always greatful to watch your video's to remind me about the important things that are very easily forgotten. You are the OG mate. Absolutely love your content. LOVE IT!!
I have done hundreds of interviews, and my favorite thing to do is not ask questions directly in a way they can say yes or no--I always form the questions like "tell me about" or "tell me the story about." I also never really say things like "rephrase the question in your answer" like so many people do, because that's such an unnatural way to speak. I would rather ask them to explain something for me.
Thank you for all the great information! I"m preparing to shoot my first documentary for my masters thesis, and this really helps making sure I have the right questions. I just hope I can get a good balance of info and emotion.
Mark, Thank you for your channel! I've been pouring into them the last week or two as I prepare for a major pivot, and I feel so excited and empowered by the content you've created to share with us. Thank you! Also, I loved the quick banter with Santi. Hilarious!
Wow! I couldn't have stumbled across this video at a better time. I'm just starting a documentary on the life of a child sex trafficking survivor which is going to have a lot of difficult interview content. Looking forward to binge watching all your interview content!!!
great video ....Your channel is THE channel I truly want to follow. Always good content and such experience, skills ..and very important; great storytelling/explaining. Thanks Mark. (your talking head setup is looking more 'youtuber' like by the way ...instead of just the usual one-simple-back-lamp-setup/ iMac screen light setup)
Still on Premiere?:) ive noticed also a new meme conception, nice!:) lol kek ahaha! But seriously, thnx for all you do for me and all you sharing to. Its really helps to see the way of work (This is the way!)
This is awesome! One thing I struggle with is the fact of: Do I include the audio of me asking the question so the audience knows, or should the question always be re-stated? I struggle with getting an obvious response to where it's crystal clear what the audience should be learning from this answer/response.
Dont include the audio of question, it adds only lenght and repetition. Before interview i give example "i ask you whats the weather outside and dont answer: sunny. Instead include the question in your answer: Weather outside is sunny". If people forged that i would stop them and give some soundbite where to start their answer. In this example i would say: "weather outside is...". Dont be afraid to ask same question over and over until you get what you need.
@@MikidiMikkonen that's definitely something I'm timid to do (ask more than once) I suppose my fear is that they might get frustrated with me/themselves and then ruin the rest of the interview if I keep having them re-try their answers.
@@jaredcollins-photo You need to keep the situation light. If i have to ask many times i would make fun of me being so precise/accurate. People are also so different and one thing works with someone and so on. One extra thing i like to do is ask them at the end to introduce them again and the first question i asked. This time they are not that nervous and your video doesnt start with them being uncomfortable.
@@MikidiMikkonen I totally like that idea for having them repeat it at the end. I suppose there definitely isn’t a one size fits all sort of tactic or strategy. We are learning with every single shoot that we do
The one key question you missed should be the very last question. "Is there anything else you want to say? Or is there anything we've missed?" Otherwise, you have it covered. "Have we missed anything, Mark?" And room tone. Don't forget the room tone.
I was literally googling this this morning. Appreciate the helpful tips. As an aside, do you ever have a hard time getting people to repeat the question at the start of their answer so that you’re able to get a good sound clip? Any tips here?
Give them some examples how to start after you question. Some people get the idea and sometimes its a struggle and need lots of repetition. I go like this: question, give examples how they can start, give some complimet "just be you, we are intrested about what you have to say" and ask the question again.
I just LOVE your content and your videos. Fall will hopefully be the right time for me to apply to your course, but until that I will continue to try to learn as much as possible while building my business. How would you say 32 float affects the overall sound workflow and in what way? Any loudness normalization or sound treatment we should with 32bit float that we don't have to do with "regular" 24bit audio?
Hi Mark, easily one of my favourite channels. Curious, what sort of price would you charge for the 'kill or be killed' documentary film. I've watched it plenty of times over, same with 'mile by Mile' amazing
@@markbone Maybe, but for some reason, RUclips hasn't got real time comments, so the I time I wrote "first", It looked for me as I was first, but maybe not. But that aside, the video was very helpful! But I would love a video where you explain how exactly to properly incorporate those interview sequences to make a banger, or have you already made something like that? Would be very interested!
Don't skip perhaps the most important tip of the video at 7:50
I thought the most important part was at 3:52

This has to be the best Documentary channel on RUclips... and he's Canadian! Yey!!!
lots of great advice & direction.... Thank you for making this video
My go to channel to refresh documentary filmmaking knowledge 😮💨👏

The advice about blabbing is spot on. You need those moments to build convince in your subject but how you follow up for a summary is so important.
a masterclass!! Thanks for sharing knowledge! God bless as you bless!!
🙏🏻🤍
This is solid gold. This advice applies well beyond documentary filmmaking.
THIS is the video I've been looking for. thank you so much for all these pointers. really helpful material!
Another one....pure gold.

The section about capturing the right emotions hits hard for me. Thanks for summarizing this in a clear and concise way.

Main takeaway, asking them to summarize. Maybe twice 😅. Love it.
This should be in part 5 of AOD, module 1. For those who are not part of AOD, you just got 10 minutes of gold for free right here.

This information was really helpful, and when you told your editor to stop speaking, I almost lost it.😂

Can you so a video about about this live? how you ask question and when to move on.
What mic/plugin are you using in this video? It sounds really saturated, very mid-focused.
