    While ‘the flu’ has become a slang term that refers to almost any ailment where you don’t feel quite right, true influenza refers to a handful of specific viruses that invade the respiratory lining, evade the immune system, and mutate at a rate that even the world’s most brilliant doctors, scientists, and health organizations struggle to keep up with.
    To learn more about what influenza is exactly, Seeker sat down with Dr. David Morens, an epidemiologist, virologist, and historian at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Morens is also an officer at the United States Public Health Service.
    The flu’s symptoms are well-known: coughing, fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and just general malaise, a.k.a. just feeling generally really bad. And while these symptoms could be a sign of many other illnesses that are similar to the flu, there is only one True Flu and it is tough to nail down the countless variations that exist.
    So, we’ve sorted the different types of influenza into four categories: A, B, C, and D.
    Find out more about the different categories of influenza, the complexities of the flu, the importance of a yearly flu shot, and more on this episode of SICK.

    Flu Season Is Here and Cases Are on the Rise
    www.healthline.com/health-new...
    "About a month ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that this year’s flu vaccine might not be as effective as we’d hoped. The four strains it was designed to target didn’t match the strains circulating in the Southern Hemisphere: influenza A (H3N2) and influenza B (Victoria). As expected, those two strains that hit the Southern Hemisphere are now striking the United States - in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Puerto Rico."
    Key Facts About Seasonal Flu Vaccine
    www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/keyfa...
    "Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently, but millions of people get flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every year. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children."
    What you should avoid eating and drinking when you have the flu
    www.insider.com/what-not-to-e...
    "You don't want your body to spend its limited energy on digestion; you want it to be working on fighting the virus. So avoid fatty foods, especially if it's the unhealthy type of fat like what you'll find in pizza, burgers, fries, and other fast food."

      I'm guessing because it technically isn't, just people are more vulnerable in the winter due to the strong constant contrast between outdoors and indoors and long periods indoors with other people, that is how they explain the cold being more common in the winter at least, and neither viruses disappear completely over the summer.

      @@Jake12220 Well I can speak on that because I'm not a nurse or a healthcare professional, but I do consider myself an informed consumer. That's interesting to hear you say. I'll look into it. Either way, it's not a cure-all.

    • @Jake12220
      @Jake12220 4 года назад +2

      @@ACrownofFlowers it's definitely not a cure all and l am a nurse, my mother is a nurse and l work with many nurses and doctors as well. I can only speak for nurses rather than doctors though as there is far more data available, in part because of a major court case in America by one of their nursing unions defending the right not to get the flu shot, which they won.
      There are many issues around the flu shot, mainly that it's pushed to the public as being a vaccine on the same lines as other vaccines, but unlike other vaccines the testing and validation phases other vaccines must go though are skipped completely with the flu vaccine. Due to the rate influenza mutates it's simply not possible to test the vaccine properly so it's tested in the wild by being given to the public and results measured by the amount of reports issued by doctors in regards to side effects. Unfortunately this is nowhere near as reliable as clinical testing as doctors won't even know if people get mild side effects, thus reports of side effects tend to be limited to severe cases like those experienced in Australia a few years ago where multiple children died and that years vaccine ended up being banned for use in children under a certain age. One of the biggest issues with the flu vaccine and one of the primary reasons many health professionals don't want it is that even if everyone got it every year it wouldn't prevent the spread of the disease. Even when they guess the right strains to put in the vaccine the effectiveness is never even close enough to generate a herd immunity and people who have been immunised, even when effective are still just as likely to transmit the disease to others(even if person b is immune they can still transmit it between persons a and c). Indeed people who have been immunised are thought more likely to spread the disease as the psychological effect of being immunised means they are likely to be less cautious about exposure to the disease so in a clinical setting not being immunised and thus more concerned about exposure leads to better use of protective equipment like gloves and masks along with more care in hand washing use of hand sanitizer.
      It's funny how sometimes the problem with something is not entirely because of the thing itself, but rather the unexpected effects its causes. Same with mammograms leading to higher rates of death from breast cancer, it's not a fault of the test, but the behaviour it causes in the people getting the test.

    • @ACrownofFlowers
      @ACrownofFlowers 4 года назад +1

      @@Jake12220 I agree with that but isn't their herd immunity anyway? and I think I did hear about that one nurses union case.

      it's still making you more resistant to thousands of types of flu. and it's possible a southern strain will come up north and spread too, but they're still pretty good at predicting which strains you're most likely to come across in a year's time. it may not be 100% effective against all flu viruses, but it still reduces the chance you'll catch many other strains in your surroundings, and that removes you as a vector for spreading it to thousands of other people, so yeah, definitely good to get it anyway. they're often free at the pharmacy

    • @ashknoecklein
      @ashknoecklein 4 года назад +5

      And even if it doesn't prevent you from catching the flu, it can still help you fight off the virus a little more quickly/easily. And every year they have a new vaccine, and even though it's a kind of a crap shoot, some years it is really quite effective.

      Question was pretty clear to me. It also was not answered. Creepy part in video (When you touch your nose or (breathe contaminated air) after coming in contact with the virus. Why is the air contaminated? How does 1 happen to just come in contact with it?

      @K!ngS!ze the spread of the flu has nothing to do with being clean, lol. Many diseases are the result of unclean environments...chicken pox, cow pox, bubonic plague, swine flu, bird flu...they are all caused by disgusting conditions and coralling animals in filthy small enclosures. And I never had the flu either until I got it and almost died. I make damn sure I get a flu shot every year now. Also if you have a family member with a serious disease (like cancer), you are putting them at risk if you go around them without being vaccinated against the flu. Believe me, you will deeply regret not getting your flu shot when you contact the flu. It is just a matter of time. It may be this year or the next, or 5 years from now, but it will catch up to you...and you will feel like you're going to die when it does. Thank God I have my flu shot and so do all my close family members.

    • @calebkirschbaum8158
      @calebkirschbaum8158 4 года назад +2

      @K!ngS!ze There is group immunization which helps people like you who don't get the shot. The shot is basically the flu, but with all the viruses dead, so when it gets in your blood, your white cells see it as a foreign entity and attack it. With it being in your blood, the white blood cells can get to it really easily and allow it to learn how to fight it. Then, when it detects the virus in your lungs, it can actually fight it, instead of trying to figure out what to do.
      the flu virus doesn't get stronger with its dead partners. The nature of the virus is what causes it to get stronger.

    • @Jake12220
      @Jake12220 4 года назад +1

      Not really. You might be thinking of the black plague, but even that's debatable these days.
      The flu is assessed in various parts of the world each year in order to predict what strains should be put in the next vaccine, but it basically just goes round and round over and over again.
