  • Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States, right behind skin cancer. But how far have we come in understanding this disease?

    » Watch more SICK | bit.ly/SICKplay...
While breast cancer largely affects women, it can also occur in men. Fortunately, thanks to awareness, early detection, and research, survival rates have increased. But, there’s still a lot to learn, so Seeker sat down with Professor Donald McDonnell from the Duke School of Medicine to find out more.
So what exactly is breast cancer?
Breast cancer affects the cells in the tissue of the breast. It starts when these cells develop abnormally and begin to divide and accumulate rapidly, eventually forming a lump or mass.
Under the breast cancer umbrella, there are three major types: estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, HER2-positive breast cancer, and triple-negative breast cancers. They’re all different, they progress differently, and the treatments for them vary.
While knowing the breakdown of the most common types of breast cancer is a start, there are also factors that can put someone at a greater risk of contracting this disease.
Some risk factors include things such as obesity, estrogen exposure and genetics. In fact, one area that has seen substantial progress, is the understanding of something called familial breast cancer. That is breast cancer passed down from generation to generation.
Understanding the three main types of breast cancer, their risk factors, and current treatment options are just the first step. Learn more about the daily discoveries and innovations that are helping write a new chapter for breast cancer on this episode of SICK.

Testicular cancer is treatable with surgery (usually they remove the whole testicle that's effected) as long as you catch it before it starts to spread. If it spreads then you have a very low chance to survive. This is why it's important to regularly check your balls for any unusual lumps and to tell your doctor ASAP if you find one

We should invest more money into other cancers that kill more people and have high mortality rates. Not saying to stop donating to breast cancer research, but if you get breast cancer you're chances of survival are very or extremely high unlike other cancers like lung cancer, even though more people die from lung cancer.

Estrogen deficiency in premenopausal period is the cause of breast cancer because it regulates cell healing. After the cells are exposed to oxidative stress they have no time to heal and physical damages lead to the formation of cancer cells which in turn keep trying to heal themselves with the same natural resources as the body. The transition from benigne to malignant cells is DNA mutation dependent as the stress factors are still present. UVB radiation exposure should also be considered. Physical exercise which develops aerobic muscle tissue and estrogen therapy for premenopausal women is the only way to prevent breast cancer. Another concerning factor is aluminium which is citotoxic and prevents the cell from self regulating itself and ages it. The normal clearance of aluminium from the human body is very low compared to the amounts that may be ingested or absorbed by the body from different cosmetics or self care products. As being a very potent stress factor for the cells it can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the cells, and ultimately to DNA mutations if the cells do not expell the toxic compounds fast enough.
Here are two links to studies proving that aluminium passes the cell barrier and that it is both citotoxic and genotoxic

How about alternatives to mammograms that are being blocked by 'researchers' without any conflict of interest whatsoever?

    • @HexerPsy
      @HexerPsy 5 лет назад +1

Actually there are no alternatives to a mammogram, currently possible.
A mammogram is an xray image, taken by squeezing the breast, down to a few inches thick. Due to the special configuration and setup of the machine - highly detailed images can be taken.
The level is detail is important, because not all cancer types present in a lump - some follow ducts in the breast and are easier detected by finding small bits of calcium.
People have tried alternatives, such as ultrasounds - but those dont have the same level of detail and lack the ability to distinguish various types from each other.
People have also tried with MRI, but also failed, because the resolution - the ability to detect the smallest details - is worse in MRI than in mammograms.
Why then is the mammogram so painful? Because, to get the best level of detail, you need weak x rays and weak x rays dont travel deep through the body. The breast needs to be flattened to between 2-3 inches.
Is that worth it? Early detection of the smallest tumors lead to a 100% survival rate after 4 years (tumor smaller than 2cm). Above 5cm your chances are 67%. Worst case scenario, your chances go down to 1 in 5 to survive the next 4 years.
I would say that is worth the mammogram.
