  • Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease caused by a virus of the same name, is also referred to as breakbone fever, but that should be the least of your concerns...what you need to worry about is a complete system shutdown.

Most commonly found in tropical regions, dengue puts 40-50% of the global population at risk. With symptoms ranging from fever, rashes, painful joint and muscle aches and vomiting, dengue symptoms can resemble the flu, but it can become life-threatening in a much different way.
Seeker spoke with Dr. Shannon Bennett from the California Academy of Sciences. Dr. Bennett is the curator of microbiology and the chief of science-in addition, she also studies the genetic makeup of dengue viruses.
To understand how dengue spreads, it helps to start with how it gets in.
Enter, the mosquito: specifically a species called Aedes aegypti.
Once the dengue virus gets in through the skin, it will eventually find its way into your lymph nodes and, then, bloodstream. And what is dengue’s primary target? White blood cells.
For those who find themselves sick as a result of dengue fever, sometimes the illness can take a dramatic turn leading to hemorrhagic fever and shock. This happens when your body’s antibodies respond to a second infection of dengue but don’t neutralize the virus the same way they would with the first strain you were exposed to.
Learn more about the disease coined the breakbone fever on this episode of SICK.

Mosquitoes are not the problem, in fact they are beneficial to us because they are pollinators. The problem is the patogens they transmit, so we should be fine only by not getting bitten. We should invent some kind of repellent vaccine that prevents mosquitoes from biting for a lifetime, that would be awesome!

I was diagnosed with Dengue Fever 10 years ago and it was very uncomfortable. My platelet count went down to a dangerously low number and I didn't want to eat but the weird thing was I don't feel weak and never experienced the rashes caused by hemorrhagic fever. My nose bled a couple of times and the recurring high fever is so annoying. I thought I was going to die and it made me think about life. Good thing my immune system managed to defeat the virus. There is no cure and they will just observe your condition once every 2 hours taking blood samples making me end up looking like a junkie with all the needle marks on my arm.

  • @AngryKittens

I've had a cousin die of it in the Philippines. The worst part about Dengue is that it doesn't seem serious at first. Just high fever and some aches that people usually mistake for flu. Especially since most of the times, it isn't fatal. But in the cases where it becomes fatal, it becomes fatal at the very end, when it seems like the fever is lifting. And it progresses so quickly (less than 24 hours), it's scary. My cousin seemed like he was recovering, then he started bleeding from the nose then went comatose quickly. He died a few hours later. What's infuriating about that was the doctor misdiagnosed him because they didn't conduct a blood test and he wasn't showing the classic rashes symptom.

My cousin was very athletic and in his mid-20s. So the symptoms probably didn't seem serious to him as well. Needless to say, my aunt and uncle were furious and wanted him sued for malpractice (he wasn't, but I think he eventually left the hospital a few months later on his own).

@@shrock6629 The hospital didn't recognize his symptoms as dengue. I forgot, but I think they thought he had food poisoning or the flu, something along those lines. So probably no platelet counts at all. I don't know the details.
Again, it was a small on-campus hospital. Not much more than a nurse station really. The thing that still haunts my aunt, is if he had gone to any of the larger off-campus hospitals (there's plenty nearby, both private and public), they'd probably have recognized the symptoms immediately, since it's a common enough disease here. And he'd have survived.
But again, he wasn't feeling that bad, so he wrongly thought it wasn't serious enough to go to a bigger hospital. Compounded by an inexperienced doctor and a hospital with limited facilities, it ended up the way it did.

The first week I had terrible fever about 40°c or 104°f but after 5 days I recovered and fever was gone completely. However my liver was mildly enlarged and sgpt and sgot levels turned out to be very high when I did a liver function test. Also my platelets were dropped to 75,000 after day 2 of no fever but after that they started to increase back. These two things were not spoken about in the video at all which are important factors relating to dengue and those which needs explaining.

Hey, I got sick of dengue almost exactly a month ago. I didn't feel sick. But the thermometer showed symptoms of fever. Physically I could do anything, but walking short distances such as going to the bathroom made me extremely tired. After 9 days I was feeling so much better, so I decided to do a round trip to the 3rd floor of my house.....
When I returned I was short of breath and extremely tired X_x.
But then again, I never felt sick. And I know that it was dengue because blood analysis said so. But in this specific case, for me, the only symptom was extreme laziness and tiredness.

I was recommended to eat kiwis papayas most fruits rich in vitamin c to regain lost health.

I lost my sister on 22nd April,2020. because of dengue hemorrhegic fever. it was her 2nd time bitten by an Aedes mosquito. we thought it was the flu. she had fever for 2 days that got worse on the 3rd day. She couldnt get off the bed had immense pain in her body and feet were cold but body had high fever all over. She went into shock, couldn't even form words, had several seizures, foaming from her mouth and was having trouble breathing. Hospitals wouldn't treat her thinking she was affected by the covid19. they didnot even bother test her. We could do nothing. She needed to be treated in the ICU.
Pls don't take fevers and body aches lightly. Don't wait for a few days for the fever to go down. My sister died after just 3 days of fever.
Sorry if i made any grammartical mistakes. English isn't my first language.

Please stay safe and eat plenty of healthy food since you are still recovering.
