The 180-600 is a great lens. I bought the 180-600mm rather than the 600mm and the money I saved paid for half of the Z 800mm. Then I upgraded the 180-600 to the amazing 100-400mm S lens. Great video thank you. I am just transitioning (back) to Nikon due almost entirely to the Z8. I have the 24-120mm lens to begin with and was planning on going with the 100-400 as my telephoto zoom. (I am just someone who enjoys photography as a hobby, I am not a pro.) At one time, I was shooting a Sony A7iii with the 200-600, but I found that it was too big of a lens to carry around "just in case" I might need a long lens and I switched to the A7Riii & the Sony 100-400GM thinking that if I need to get in closer, I could crop and still end up with an image with a similar resolution to what I would get with my A7iii & the 200-600 but with a lot less weight and bulk. My question is this, how would you compare this lens to the Nikon 100-400? Would the extra reach be offset by the additional weight? IMHO, (and everyone will be different), having the extra reach is of little value if I tend to leave the lens in the car because I don't want to carry it with me "in case" I see something. Thanks.
Hate it when the VR switch isn't on the lens but I'd imagine you'd have VR on most of the time anyway with a lens like this. And wow, it's nice to see a reasonable price on a lens these days.

Me too! I’m a happy long-time user of the 200-500 as well. I have shot tons hand-held with it and the only hope I have is that this new one can do better in the area of af-speed, zoom-throw and a shorter close range distance. Of course, with a lens of this kind the bokeh quality (subjective) is important too. By they way, internal focusing is a bonus since I’m often out and about in very adverse conditions. But, touch wood, no moisture have ever entered my trusted 200-500 despite the external focus mechanism. So maybe nothing to worry about?
@@freetibet1000 The 200-500 seems solid enough as long as you don't travel to super dusty areas or use it in the rain. And it's true, the throw on the zoom ring is pretty ridiculous. But it looks like they have improved pretty much all of that. And didn't the 200-500 launch at a similar price, too?

Nikon needs to stop treating the truth like a dirty little secret. They made a partnering decision and they should be proud that decision. The 70-180 looks like a good lens; let it be what it is.
Hey, Nikon Rep, 2023 ought to be the year that consumers are told when a major manufacturer rebadges a third-party lens. If Nikon makes minor changes to a Tamron design, that is a selling point to us consumers that Nikon is willing and ready to partner with industry leaders to produce lenses for the needs of all of their customers. Also, if Nikon has improved the design, that sounds like something consumers would love to hear you brag about instead of leaving us all to assume that you just took an existing Tamron design, had them make it for you, and then slapped your name on it to charge more for it and bring it into your lens catalog.
Well, glass presumably made by Tamron but everything else by Nikon, including extra coatings on the lenses, focusing motors and weathersealing. There's a price to pay with all of the advantages.
@@WillymazeAnd you know this how? Everything points to the lens being exactly identical to the Tamron, except for the plastic casing. That's the only way for this thing to make sense from an economical standpoint. Sidenote: I'd be happy if the focus motors especially are Tamron's, because their VXD linear motors are better than anything Nikon makes. Case and point, the 180-600 has a stepping motor. In 2023. On a wildlife lens...
@@youknowwho9247 You should look at any of the S line lens motors. The 180-600 is a budget consumer wildlife lens. They save their best parts including coatings and focus motors for the professional designs like the 100-400.
@@youknowwho9247 We can all speculate but don't you think by having exactly the same lens it would be a straight Tamron? I love Tamron and I still own the F-mount trinity and the 35mm 1.4, but Nikon has the edge in weathersealing and lens construction. Also, it accepts Nikon teleconverter, something that the Sony versions won't do. Matt Irwin shows that it has virtually no chromatic aberration nor flares and the E-mount does at a certain degree.
Which camera would you recommend between the Nikon D850 and the Nikon Z7 MK2? You have a lot of experience in photography and have use a lot of different cameras.
I noticed with my externally zooming Tamron 150-500mm, that birds quite often fly away when I zoom out quickly. I mean, you're still rotating your hand, but I think the overall shape of the lens not changing is also going to be an advantage in some situations.
No V.R. switch on the lens *is* annoying. Even the 200-500 had a V.R. switch on the lens. Still, it looks like a very good and affordable lens for wildlife. I believe it was Nikon Rumors that thought the 70-180 is a re-badged Tamron, which is fine as they are making some very good lenses and if the mount is licensed by Nikon they should work very well.
The Nikon Z 1800-600 is and outstanding lens, I honestly don't think it can get any better for the price. I have the 1.4 Nikon Z teleconverter and that paired with this lens is just magical. I don't see how anyone would spend the price of a car for the Nikon Z 400 2.8.
thx for the video but how would you say it compares to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S with 2x converter on Z8 in DX crop as then you'd have a 210-600 f5.6...thx
What is going on with the micro jitters/background focus breathing in the video, really noticable when your next to those trees? Does it have something to do with the lens on whatever camera your using to record video, or the camera itself?
That 180 to 600 would be cool to compare with the sigma 150 to 600 I think i should've specified a bit, the sigma 150 to 600 sport is a similar zoom range and might be a bit of competition since it's in a similar price range but a bit more expensive. The sigma 150 to 600 contemporary is much cheaper for pretty much the same lens, just less rugged design than the sport but making it even more competition for the nikon lens. Anyways if you don't like my question you can suck my ass
Excellent intro to this awesome 180-600 lens, Chris! 2 questions please...At f/8, can you really see a major difference in sharpness between it and the Nikkor Z 100-400 S? And, who sells an Arca-Swiss compatible foot plate? (I still can't understand why Nikon's telephoto collars/feet are not Arca-Swiss compatible?! Doesn't every serious photographer use Arca-Swiss compatible gear, i.e., ball heads, pan-tilt, gimbal, etc.?) Thank you sir.
Since it takes the TC's, wouldn't it have to be a different design than the Tamron version? I don't mean mount, but room in the rear for the TC to fit.
Nice, I will grab a copy of the 180-600mm. Looks like an all around great zoom range for wildlife photography. Too bad that Nikon announces great lenses and still don't have it in stock. The 800mm, the 600mm and the 400mm F2.8 Z lenses... Hey! Thanks for pronouncing "bouquet" in the correct way! International photographers rejoice! : )
Thanks, you guys. Dang, I think I want too many Nikon things. Starting with that Z8, then this lens and several other lenses. But I still have the D850, D750, and a bunch of their lenses…😬
I find it amusing that Ricci pretty much gives us every information we need on the lens, and people can do whatever they want with this lens in the local Nikon stores, yet most of the RUclipsrs only have a few hours with it.
Ricci video shows that this lens has same image quality as 100-400, and I tried the AF speed back to back against 100-400 in the local Nikon store, they are indistinguishable. This lens is a no-brainer for me.

@@youknowwho9247 I would love to rent the 28-75 Z and compare it with the G2 version that I have and see it Nikon's version has the edge or not.
Thank you!! What do you think about Performance compaired with 4.5/400. ?Yours Peter
No V.R. switch on the lens *is* annoying.
I love the Bow River too, almost got killed by a bull Elk in matting season once tho, so be careful up there guys.
Those bull elks are especially aggressive during "matting season"! 🙂
Bokeh is actually really nice generally speaking.
Great review! Deer at 5:20 lol. Great bokeh.
thx for the video but how would you say it compares to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S with 2x converter on Z8 in DX crop as then you'd have a 210-600 f5.6...thx
This and the 20 mm 1.8 will do my needs perfectly.
What is going on with the micro jitters/background focus breathing in the video, really noticable when your next to those trees? Does it have something to do with the lens on whatever camera your using to record video, or the camera itself?
Can we use all type of shutter speeds, like slow fast, when vibration reduction is on of the lens, any restriction technically
That 180 to 600 would be cool to compare with the sigma 150 to 600
I think i should've specified a bit, the sigma 150 to 600 sport is a similar zoom range and might be a bit of competition since it's in a similar price range but a bit more expensive. The sigma 150 to 600 contemporary is much cheaper for pretty much the same lens, just less rugged design than the sport but making it even more competition for the nikon lens. Anyways if you don't like my question you can suck my ass
Indeed!
it will flatten the Sigma.... wait and see...
No comparisons needed. Internal zoom beats external zoom any day in the long telephoto zoom category.
Sigma 150-600's zoom ring has very long travel distance, and not very smooth.
Internal zoom and short throw already makes the Nikon superior. I have no doubts the Nikon will have superior image quality once more tests are done.
Nice video. But what a pity to not try some teleconverter wich Nikon recommended. I can not to believe that it works with TC 2.0 perfectly focused ?!?
Compare it with sony 200-600 in full review
Excellent intro to this awesome 180-600 lens, Chris! 2 questions please...At f/8, can you really see a major difference in sharpness between it and the Nikkor Z 100-400 S? And, who sells an Arca-Swiss compatible foot plate? (I still can't understand why Nikon's telephoto collars/feet are not Arca-Swiss compatible?! Doesn't every serious photographer use Arca-Swiss compatible gear, i.e., ball heads, pan-tilt, gimbal, etc.?) Thank you sir.
Great review. Thank you.
Quick one PP - how does the weight and hand ability and optic quality of this lens compare against the Nikon 200-500 F5.6 AFS VR ?
Looks like a winner for Nikon. Side question, anyone know what bag Chris has during this video?
5:10 ducky seems happy with the sharpness.
3:55 😂😂😂
I love watching your videos.
Hi Chris! Which bag are you carrying on this shoot?
Since it takes the TC's, wouldn't it have to be a different design than the Tamron version? I don't mean mount, but room in the rear for the TC to fit.
Nice, I will grab a copy of the 180-600mm. Looks like an all around great zoom range for wildlife photography. Too bad that Nikon announces great lenses and still don't have it in stock. The 800mm, the 600mm and the 400mm F2.8 Z lenses... Hey! Thanks for pronouncing "bouquet" in the correct way! International photographers rejoice! : )
The price seems to be affordable..
Thanks, you guys. Dang, I think I want too many Nikon things. Starting with that Z8, then this lens and several other lenses. But I still have the D850, D750, and a bunch of their lenses…😬
Is this lens coming in FX fit for DSLR also ?
I find it amusing that Ricci pretty much gives us every information we need on the lens, and people can do whatever they want with this lens in the local Nikon stores, yet most of the RUclipsrs only have a few hours with it.
Ricci video shows that this lens has same image quality as 100-400, and I tried the AF speed back to back against 100-400 in the local Nikon store, they are indistinguishable. This lens is a no-brainer for me.
Love it ❤
Is the 180-600 also a Tamron based lens? Might be comparable to their DSLR 150-600
Thanks for the confirmation the 70-180 is a Nikkor authorized version of Tamron
Let us know about the SHARPNESS IN THE EDGES please (70-180), So us landscapers get a precise idea. thanks
There was a 70 - 180mm Micro zoom lens, long days before, i own 2 of them ;-))
For underwater great!
Thats one serious lens 😮
Hey did you got the Fuji XS20?
Is the 180-600 parfocal?
Balancement on the Z6 mkII?
Yes!! Finally...
Another win for Nikon
Great products from Nikon. Thank you, Chris !
How much estimated price list for those lenses?
it’s interesting how 180-600 compares with sigma 60-600 under F, now I’m using sigma and thinking about whether to change it to Nikon.
