    What do you guys think? Is the R Line enough? Do we need a Passat R?

      The R line doesn't seem as aggressive as an upgrade as the S line from Audi. I'm actually surprised at how boring the car looks with the R line addition. If you took off the badges you wouldn't even notice it has any options on it (without the fog lights people would likely think it was the base model). But the Golf R is also pretty tame as well. VW = boring. I think when you have to describe something as "adult" you're really just nicely saying boring.

    • @netcruzer
      @netcruzer 6 лет назад +1

      R Line definitely not enough. This big sedan should have the VR6, or the 300HP 2.0T. Ever since Passat went Tennessee it reminds me of an old Crown Vic. Not the direction I want VW headed in. But Murica loves big sedans.. that's why this exists.

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  6 лет назад +5

      +Jacob Mueller yeah it has its target demographic and I feel that we're not in that. It's probably enough power and "aggressive look" for most people that will be buying it

    I'm really enjoying your content, guys. You're both fun to watch, but the production value on both sound and video is unparalleled for a channel this size, and even some channels that are ten times as big. Keep it up, please. I love it!

    • @MyMrAnimal
      @MyMrAnimal 6 лет назад +1

      It all looks lovely! I really enjoy the cutaways you do when you explain a feature, they're generally not too long and they do show off the feature very well. Like when you show the headlights or the R-badges. The only thing you could do is mention pricing a bit more, or do some comparisons, I just watched the video and I can't remember if you mentioned the price of the whole car, only these specific options. Would be a pretty easy thing to show with text on the screen if you don't want to waste time talking about it

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  6 лет назад +1

      +MyMrAnimal awesome thanks! We do talk about pricing sometimes but not always. This one's around $40k CAD!

    • @YuriTereshyn
      @YuriTereshyn 6 лет назад

      MyMrAnimal if we mention price in Canadian dollars and fuel efficiency in km/L it kind of doesn't really help and maybe even confuses the American fan base. If I have to convert to usd and miles per gallon then I get confused!

    • @MyMrAnimal
      @MyMrAnimal 6 лет назад

      Yuri Tereshyn I get the issue, which is why I think you could use a quick graphic to show it off. Just a quick 2 seconds of text with the price, then another 2 with the same thing converted. You've got lots of inserts where it would fit super well, and you don't need to confuse yourselves during the shoot!

    Bought the 18 R-Line for my daughter. It has enough power and good handling for a teenage driver. The VW warranty of 6 years 72K miles cannot be beat. Overall the car looks "nice" and drives well. Out the door price was 21k.

    the 1.8T is more fun to drive than the new 2.0T that has been detuned to match the Auto transmission. This new 2.0T feels sluggish. You can press the button at the end of the signal stalk to get access to the Assistant menu which has lane keep assist at the top of the menu. 2 button press to turn on/off :)

    My gf had a 2014 2.5 Passat. I thought it was a great car for a daily. Huge interior and over 30 mpg hwy. I do agree though that the transmission was always in the wrong gear. I just wish VW had kept/updated the 2.5 5 cylinder, it sounded awesome but just needed more power for the size of the Passat. This new R line doesn't make sense to me without the vr6 option... Isn't being faster the whole point of anything that ever donned an R badge?

    You can sometimes feel the turbo, definitely hear it from time to time. The low end torque and well tuned tranny make it a very interesting and surprisingly impressive power plant. It is a great daily driver. It is so light that carrying passengers will bog it down. It is peppy but you will get smoked at a light by a car with more displacement if you miss the launch.

I love my Infiniti's so the Q60 would be cool and the QX80 seems like you guys would have an interesting take on it. Not sure if you guys only do new press release cars but maybe some super average "regular" new cars, kind of like RCR (another of my faves) but for newer models.

    I own a 2017 R line. I'm glad I have the 17 & not the 18. With the addition of a APR cold air intake and an intercooler upgrade with a tune the car is no longer a dog. Those minor add on's get it up to over 240hp without any risk to reliability. I see Canada gets some options the R line in the US doesn't like memory seats and sunroof options. Power is easily upgraded on the 17.

  • @lexusfan100
    @lexusfan100 6 лет назад +12

    i have a 2017 vw 1.8T SE with tech package (US model) its a decent car. Nothing dramatic but very elegant. Here the Rline misses lotta good stuff like no fogs, no rear vents, no nav. So thats why i went with a non Rline. Altho the R line does look good. But since its an appearance package one could technically get the parts and add to to non R line trims. So R line is not a good choice. Thats y i agree with you to get a bigger engine. Have you seen the euro spec passat. Its sooooo much cooler than passat we get in north america. Why the discrimination!!!...lol

    On a weekend trip I took last year I ended up with a Passat as a rental car. I thought it was a comfortable car and it felt peppy to me; probably because it handled great on back roads compared to the Wrangler I had at the time. I think it was the 1.8 T model, but it surprised me even in passing situations. It also got great gas mileage for as large as it is. But it is boring to look at, I don't think it has one sporty line or curve on the outside, it just blends in.

      People outside of North America choose Passat on Accord cause it has diesel one. Passat with diesel is the right choice if you live in where gas price is high.

    You Canadians get screwed over on the Passat R-Line. The Australian version comes out with the Golf R drivetrain (including 6-speed DGS and the 4MOTION AWD), and you can option it in the wagon too. It comes with the “Verona” 19” wheels, Discovery Pro 9.2” touch screen media, the Golf R steering wheel with the round centre, the new full “Active Info” digital dash and sports front seats in Carbon Nappa leather. There’s also full LED headlights with fog/cornering lights in the lower bumper, etc.

    I've been seeing a few of these on the road lately. They look the part but I always wondered if meant business. Guess not! I'd take an Accord 2.0, Camry V6 and Sonata 2.0 over this any day. 40 grand? And people were saying the stinger was overpriced at 40 and that has 365 hp. Ridiculous. Great review as always

      Dylan Wodrich they live in Canada and the price is more expensive there compared to the US which tops at about $36k. It's got a good warranty though 6years/72k miles which they didn't mention

      +Carlos Leal 40k CAD is 31k USD in direct conversion. So technically if you bought one here and brought it back to the States, ours is cheaper haha

      TheStraightPipes the 36 k I was referring to the most expensive model which was the seller premium v6 but 40k Canadian dollars to us dollars is 31k us dollars which is the sel premium. I wish they named the us versions trendline or highline which sound way better than s, se, sel

  • @GeekTherapyRadio

    Yeah I think our US R-Line is fairly different. Definitely don't have rear seat AC and a lot of other features, but it's probably priced lower as well (yes, factoring in exchange rate).

    You guys really need to get into a EU/AU spec Passat (specifically the 206TSI R-Line with the same engine and drivetrain from the Golf R!). These US-spec Passats just look so dumpy and dowdy in comparison.

    I really like this car, especially the interior. I think I'm that "beige interior" kind of guy. I believe it's a simple, rather luxurious car which I'd definitely buy. I mean, I like cars like this. However, it would've been even better (for me) if it'd been AWD. Also, I don't know what's the matter with Volkswagen and its rotating power buttons--they got to fix that!

    • @TheStraightPipes

      +TurgBurglar yeah I love lane keep assist

    • @goons123flofy
      @goons123flofy 6 лет назад

      TheStraightPipes FYI- for quick access to the driver assists, touch the botton at the end of the turn signal stalk. It brings up the driver assists menu, then you cycle through using your right steering wheel button and ok button.

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  6 лет назад

      +TurgBurglar yes I knew about that. It's still an additional 2 unnecessary steps. A lot of cars have a single button for on and off and that's the way we prefer. The assistants work well in most cases but it's nice to be able to turn off quickly

    • @goons123flofy
      @goons123flofy 6 лет назад

      TheStraightPipes I see where you are coming from. I turned my assists on and leave them on. Only turn off the lane keep assist when doing back road driving, as I don't like the feeling of a ghost tugging at the wheel. My front assist has given me a false warning once or twice, other than that I love all my assists.

    Just bought a 2018 in White.. R Line is really sharp looking with the larger wheels.. This car would be a MONSTER with the V6 but the 2.0 Turbo has all I need ... And the mileage on the HGWY is the best I've ever had in a medium luxury Med/Lg sedan. My normal short trip driving is 30mpg.. I get all of 36 mpg's on the 100 mile Highway trip I've done. Do not need a V6... And with the lunatic policies of this administration concerning Importing Oil rather than simply keeping it local makes NO Sense.. NO change in environmental gains what so ever.. But I am paying and many others are now $4.35 for the good gas.. $4.00 for the 89 octane.. 2.0 Turbo is brilliant now.. !

    This car looks pretty good, isnt bad overall, but that price ! This seems to be a classic case of VW overpricing. I think VW knows its not going to take any cust's away from Honda or Toyota with this car, but the old school VW faithful will still want it, and will still be willing to pay too much for it.
