    Today I'm reacting to PAIN OF SALVATION'S brand new track "Accelerator". As a long time fan, I had some high expectations for the track. Were Daniel and the gang able to meet those expectations?
    This is part of the Release Radar series, where I check out the latest releases from artists that I like (or have liked/followed in the past) there's a lot of good, but probably some not so good in there too. As always, my honest reaction will prevail, I am incapable of lying.
    As a singer and producer for experimental rock group DEFY THE OCEAN, I like to bring a little extra flavour to my reactions, making observations about the production and the songwriting. Something I don't see much of on RUclips right now.

    They are always so unpredictable. I really liked their last album as well. This song is definitely a grower, and knowing that Daniel always has these huge concepts around different subjects, it would be a premature judgement to make a definitive opinion on one track. I am looking forward to the album, and I just subscribed to your channel hoping that you will react to the album when it comes out! cheers! :)

      Thanks for the sub. I will definitely be up for doing an album reaction! Maybe I will even do a joint one with my bandmate. Could be nice to have a discussion.
      Anyway I hope you didn't think I was being too harsh. It's hard to be very objective when you have a big history with a band!

    The immediate impression upon hearing this piece is the independent rhythms of the drums and the phrasing of the melody/lyrics. It's difficult (or purposely hidden by the composer) to find a downbeat and still retain a loose sense time. Much respect to the drummer for various time signatures. It all comes together near the end of the piece as everyone plays in 4/4. Very nicely done. I must confess Accelerator is a refreshing aural experience compared to what I've been listening in past decades.

    The guy in the suit is Lars Ardarve, their long time photographer, friend and the director of this video :D

    • @FriedTheo
      @FriedTheo  4 года назад +2

      Yes, I've heard of him actually. Daniel has mentioned him before as their photographer. I don't know why the quality of the shots looked so different, they didn't look like they belonged in the same video to me. Maybe I'm being too harsh.

      @@FriedTheo I don't think you are. I actually like the concept of the video and the lyrics, but the quality is definitely incosistent and It kind of looks like they started to make fun halfway the recording and some shots are a little cringy or goofy. Maybe intentionally, I don't know. I was never a big fan of their visual side anyway. But the music I love so deeply and this song makes me curious for the rest of the album. They always make something unexpected.

    Referring to fire I think that "accelerator" stands for this:

    Oops, my bandmate rightly corrected me, and thought it was hilarious, that I called the album "One Hour Over The Concrete Lake" as opposed to the correct title "One Hour By The Concrete Lake". Forgive me, it's been a while since I gave that one a listen!

    • @FriedTheo
      @FriedTheo  4 года назад +2

      Oh nice. Best song is a tough one. I'm very partial to Beyond The Pale, but I also like newer songs like Mortar Grind and The Physics of Gridlock from Road Salt 2, Sisters from Road Salt 1. Scarsick, Mrs Modern Mother Mary and Idiocracy. Be as an album is fantastic too. Inside from OHBTCL. Stress from Entropia.
      A lot :)

    Again, I'm probably singing the same chorus as everyone else, but the first listen was difficult. I was trying to find a constant throughline so that my mind could listen almost mindlessly, there isn't one. I would say that the constant is jumbled, but is slowly focused on throughout the song and comes to a head at the final chorus.
    My take on what "Accelerator" may mean in this context, is that the world is burning but fighting against it only going to accelerate more destruction. We may have more information on it when the next song is released, or when the album is released but I'm looking forward to it! This song makes me a happy boy!

      @@FriedTheo I just came back from watching it. Accelerationism is a very interesting concept, simply tearing everything down, to start again and learning from the mistakes of the past. But realistically, the only ways that can be achieved is through complete unification, and nullification of stray thought, or just a mass genocide of people who don't share the same ideology. Yes, small change can happen through mass protests, but that drive for change seemingly only would come when there is a perceived reward for the people who can facilitate the change, in my opinion.

      @@FriedTheo I was joking around. Accelerator sounds very similar, to me atl east, to the song Illuminate by Leprous. Especially the main rhythm of the song. Also, Leprous are an amazing band and if you love prog, and interesting music in general, you should check them out.

    Hey ! Great reaction! I completely agree for the first chorus, it just sounds like he forced himself to put the lyrics into a melody, and it feels a bit uninspired and out of place. It's definitely a grower tho, love it now! :D

      @FriedTheo  4 года назад +1

      It's funny that you say that, because I like it more now I've heard it a few times. The vocal melody that comes in the background in the 2nd chorus is criminally underused. Would have worked so well in the 1st chorus!
