The new Audi RS3 has received a lot of media coverage since its launch in late 2021 and trying to film new and original content 5 months after it first broke cover is not easy. However one thing reviewers haven't really done is look at the car from the perspective of a real world owner so that's what I've attemped to do in this video which is the first of 2, the second which will drop a week or so after is a closer look at driving modes and chassis dynamics.
So in this 39 minute video I share with you what it's like to live with the new Audi RS3 over 7 days of (relatively) normal daily use.
My long suffering wife Kate reluctantly makes her debut on camera, Toby the Cat returns and considers whether he prefers the Mk8 Golf R (no really!), I nearly put the car through a fence within 1 hour of it being delivered (no damage done, lesson learned-see below) and there is a lot of opinion and fact about this car you will probably not have heard elsewhere so enjoy!
The degree of oversteer in that clip early in the video came as a bit of a shock as it wasn't in drift mode and ESC was in Sport mode so not fully off. After that near miss, ESC remained fully on all the time and I suggest owners don't mess with this on the public road (more on this in the dynamics video coming soon).
I don't live in the big house in the intro, just a convenient spot to take delivery of the car.
Thanks to the clever motorsport students from Oxford Brooks University who I met at Caffeine & Machine, especially local boy Marcus from Redditch.

Hard to top your review vids on the RS3 so decided to try another angle that doesn't involve being a driving god :) Was thinking of you when reading a review of this very car vs M3 xDrive that landed on my door step yesterday a month later than published (no idea why...). It said 'the torque vectoring and rear axle coming into play..just never quite happens', got to disagree with that, as my laundry bill last week confirms.

@@volkswizard I'm just horrified how cheap the Rs3 8y looks , you covered how plain the Cabin is 10/10 👍. I've got the 8v with panroof & Dyamic plus interior pack and it makes the inside MUCH MUCH nicer , not to mention how ugly the whole of the front end is, But when you put the car up on you're ramp's and showed us how much VwAudi have cut costs even with all the under pinings the car ooked like a 1995 Ford escort from underneath.

Thanks for the advice regarding the 'torque splitter' and demonstrating it on the public road. After that unexpected spike of oversteer, ESC remained fully on and yet the car still had a love neutral/oversteery balance you can exploit responsibly.

I picked up my low mileage 2018 RS3 saloon for under 40k ... the price increase just doesn't seem tempting enough for the upgrade to me. Mine is a fast runabout, if I wanted sideways I'd have bought an M2 Comp.

Another great video, I do like the "real life" videos that you occasionally do. It's an honest review too - it's testament to the quality of the content that Audi UK gave you that car for 7 days, knowing that you wouldn't just gush about how wonderful it was!
Interesting that you pointed out the road noise - my Wife says exactly the same about her A3 Edition 1 35 tfsi. That's got the same 235/35/19 tyres as the Mk 7/7.5 R, but my golf is noticeably quieter (might be down to the actual tyres though). Must be horrendous with that amount of rubber on the RS3. It's so bad that we're seriously considering buying 17" or 18" wheels & fitting Michelin CrossClimate plus tyres (or similar) to it. That's not really an option for the RS3 though, I guess🤣.
It's certainly lairy though - fair play for not editing out the bit where you almost went into the ditch! I'd also be wary of using it during the winter - it would be nigh on impossible to put winter wheels/tyres on it (I suppose 18" wheels, but the tyres would be difficult to source).
I'm of the same opinion as you - nice car, but I wouldn't rush to buy one. I'm no fan of saloons, but it does look strangely nice in RS3 - for what is, basically, a Mk8 VW Jetta (not that there is.....!). Probably the colour too - I like it. Almost as loud as the previous RS3 in Viper Green (which I'd definitely have). Sportback rules, though - more practical.
The big steering wheel is annoying though - my Wife's A3 has a lovely flat bottom wheel, but basic cruise control. Strange....
In short: I'd keep my 7.5 R & use the cash for a modern classic. A relatively new version of the previous RS3 is something I'd quite fancy though - not quite as good to drive, but nicer to look at & sit in.

They did that with the older car too but as an option. Audi didn’t admit it was to fight understeer, the official line was it meant the front tyres didn’t overheat so quickly on track. Of course when they are too hot, guess what happens?😉

Got rid of my Edition 1 Saloon after less than a year due to the road noise, you just dont expect it in a "quality" brand like Audi. The Tiguan R I have now is much much better.

No damage was done thankfully, it’s a warning to other owners to beware. Higher pressure on offside front tyre might have not helped as car would have pushed on more than it should have done and corrective action by the electronics was more abrupt

Alcantara steering wheels - why? After 8-12 months Alcantara wheels look shiny and cheap, and feel crap. And, unlike leather, Alcantara can never be restored to good-as-new.
And it’s a rip-off when OEMs charge extra - Alcantara is *cheaper* for OEMs compared to leather!
Very interesting vid, useful insight, great car, but FWIW I’d prefer the hatch version.

So, what, as an alternative buy a gti clubsport (an ugly, boring golf) and a boxster gts (not practical)... really? I know from experience that running two cars isn't cheap and if they are 'older' , then factor in higher running costs as well. Seems like a pretty odd thing to say, given there are several alternatives to an rs3 at the same price point, which also offer the same practicality and level of performance, e.g. amg a45s, bmw m2c or even a low mileage rs4 for not a lot more. Also, gripes about the rs3 interior and you recommend a golf, which really does have a naff interior 🤣

    • @volkswizard

I get that but the driving of these new cars is far more sophisticated and it could take you weeks or months to get to know it, the old car just pushed on and that was pretty much that.
