As a civil engineer with a Ph.D. in civil engineering, I completely agree with you. In Indian railways, we need more seats rather than over-engineered and poorly designed stations.
I saw the same thing in new ayodhya railway station. People sleeping on floors. In India, we need a massive supply of seats at stations due to population bordering on oversupply. There should be rows upon rows every which way. I don't know why this basic feature has gone unnoticed.

Hello from France! The staircase design reminds me in part of the one at the entrance of Montparnasse train station (Paris). It also has a mix of straight and zig-zaging stairs, but a big difference is that Montparnasse is 4 floors high (one underground floor for subway, the station entrance at ground level, and two upper floors for trains). The straight stairs lets you go directly from the entrance to the local trains waiting area, and further to the train tracks; while the zig-zaging stairs on both sides lets you move between all the floors.
You missed a big point. All the platforms except the first platform are Inaccessible. They only have steep stairs. No ramps, no elevators, no escalators. Compared to KSR and YPR it is impossible for the disabled, elderly, and even for a fit person to carry heavy luggage to the directly access other terminals. It's an accessibility disaster.
Oh they have made very big spacious underpasses with ramps actually, electric golf carts take passengers across at a charge. In this video we focused on the building itself, maybe in another one we can explore the issues with the platforms. Accessibility imo is not a major issue but there are other debatable choices made wrt platforms at SMVT

Wow. a very rare skill i witnessed now - a thoughtful, original and well researched video instead of the same copy paste job that most indians do. so glad to see your work. will support in any way i can. keep up the good work.
Very well documented. Exactly what i felt when i visited this terminal. Myself with my parents and an infant had difficulty in finding place to sit and end up in standing for an hour until the platform got announced. Sometimes we shouldn’t forget the basics when designing the complicated piece.
1. Hearing such announcements of "airport type railway stations", i will optimistic about India 2. Seeing such poor execution, I feel sad about India 3. Watching this excellent video on this topic, i feel optimistic again about India.
People-friendly design is clearly not a priority for the architects and engineers. A place where many people gather should prioritise ease of movement, larger spaces for meeting/waiting, and good signage, which gives the place a sense of direction. The whole space is cluttered (not large enough single concourse because they end up splitting it into random sections) and signage is insufficient at times. Prioritising optics over practicality is bound to bite us in the back. Not to mention the complete lack of accessibility (edit: by foot. And yes, I did walk the entire span of the access road from SV road metro station during daytime). Hopefully the upcoming Devanahalli terminal (or the Yeshwantpur renovation) is, as you say, not underdesigned.
For young architects , it is the most important priority. But government doesn't employ architects for every 1000 civil engineers hired there is 1 architect hired. So what should we do? Each day I step outside, I see 100 ways the PWDs MCDs could have designed better roads, crossings, bus stands, parkings but they hire 100 engineers but hardly any architect or urban designer or an urban planner to design our city infrastructure. After years of watching this band wagon of badly done projects, I have stopped complaining. Peaceful but painful.
@@roasterblaster6660 There is literally no urban planning in India. I've seen poorer countries in Africa doing way better urban planning and land development. In India for some reason its all random and chaotic. Can't blame the people because govt never does their job leaving it to private individuals doing it in their own random ways.
@@roasterblaster6660 As a non-architect, and just an urban planning enthusiast, I have to apologise for that comment. It was a little out of place to criticise professionals with very little basis. But I believe there is definitely some factor behind the scenes of these projects that calls for cost-cutting moves or to prioritise surface-level optics over functionality. The Indian consumer is either economically not well off and suffering due to the lack of functionality or is economically well off and able to access a more luxurious product while affording to bypass the lack of basics. The consumer has to be able to demand a better project for themselves from the authorities.
makes me realise people dont care about the quality, its all about the name and fame. But the actual question is , is India even headed towards figuring out the core issues that makes our lives difficult. You explained it so nicely. I will go inside it now someday and try to figure things out.

So much wasted potential. I actively avoid trains that terminate here cause of the poor accessibility vis a vis multimodal connectivity. Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and even smaller stations like KR Pura and Baiyappanahalli are way better connected IMO. Great video though!

Very accurate description. The term 'Over Engineered and Under Designed' is applicable to a lot of things which are visible in India today. Propaganda matters, the largest cricket stadium in the world is one example.
This is very good coverage of infrastructural issues. The critique is in place. At no point, did it feel like an attack, but educational and raising awareness. excellent work!
Even young people in India take constructive criticism quite negatively, that I found to my peril ! How would we better ourselves as a society, without being criticised ? In Kerala also many stations had insufficient seating, as if S.R. runs trains with Japanese precision. Many of the seating is donated by clubs, railway users' forum, other organisations etc. All in all, more power to your channel 💪 and a better nation ! And hope Babus stop treat citizens like cattle !
The dog is surely enjoying the new railway station. Laying on his back and exposing his belly is sure sign of his trust in this infrastructure project.
What an excellent and insightful video! You've done an amazing job presenting the flaws in the newly built railway station with such clarity and detail. The simplicity of your explanation makes it easy for everyone to understand the issues, while your thorough observations highlight areas that need immediate attention. This is exactly the kind of constructive critique that can drive positive change. Great work in bringing these points to light so effectively!
I am a geologist not an engineer but subscribed your channel now. these are basics. They should not call themselves civil engineers if they can't do civil duties.!
This really is an excellent video, well thought-out and professionally executed. It's a shame whenever so much public money brings relatively little value, but it's always fixable and I love that you actually focused on the lessons learned.
Correct, it will be more benefit if they add more infrastructure inside, like more seats, more retail area, and signed to make people using the station easier. Outside infrastructure need to be more pedestrian friendly and high density development around. Also i think if they didn't wants changed the inside layouts, the least they can do is to assigned more staff to help direct passenger, because even you put signed, people can still get confused about where they supposed to go, knowing how confusing the stair aalignment and other facilities are located. Really Good Video bro, keep up the good work, Hi from Indonesia🇮🇩
Fantastic video. It's scary to consider all the infrastructure being built during the urbanization of Bengaluru without understanding use cases and practicality.
5:14 'Lot's of space and materials have been used, but instead of creating value, they feel incomplete and wasteful.' Very well put! It is sad to see that India seemingly is repeating the same mistakes like other uprising economies and countries. Designing a well functioning railway terminal is not rocket science... And there are 10.000 examples to look at while doing the research for such a project. Truly heartbreaking that this modern structure is far away from being an improvement of high value. Fast development doesn't necessarily mean low-quality. Just put smart professionals on the projects. Because seriously, wtf are these stairs? An art project? Hahah
Great video man - it's great that the country is putting money in infrastructure. But now the priority becomes making it well designed and user friendly. Subscribed!
Thank you for such a knowledge filled mature and critical analysis. I am not an engineer but immediately subscribed to your channel. The fault is those who give the specifications. The General Manager of the South Western Railway who approved this should be sacked.
Excellent.... You noticed, evaluated and said it ! Could you please forward this video to Prime Minister, Railway Minister, Chief Engineer of South Central Railway, its Zonal Manager, Divisional Engineers etc....
Very big building but no retiring rooms, 1 very small waiting hall. Had a terrible experience. It's felt like water water everywhere not a single drop to drink.
Architect here. Absolutely agree with your points. The building seems like an engineering marvel at rhe first glance but when i got down from my auto and had no place to find shelter during the pouring rain other than to run a 100m distance toward the building with luggage, i was immediately disappointed at the planning and it only went downhill till I boarded my train. Not to mention a railway station of this size should be connected to a mass transit system like the metro which is not done. Thus many passengers prefer majestic or yeshwantpur still for the accessibility (if they have the option)

This is a classic example of how the meaning of the phrase 'over engineered' is evolving before our eyes. "Over engineered" used to mean excessively robust. Now it means the opposite. Unnecessarily over complicated or feature laden and therefore the opposite of robust!

The fisheries dept building in Hyderabad is one more example of 'Expectation V Reality'.
Finally there is an Indian channel on urbanism. Have watched so many urbanist videos of Not Just Bikes, City Beautiful , Streetscraft, and many more and always thought that why there are no creators from India who talk about basic yet important problems of city planning, public transport and pedestrian friendly infrastructure. People don't even want to talk about these problems they just ignore it.
Excellent video. All the youtubers who were paid to praise this project in every possible way must learn something from this video. Thanks a lot for covering so many things
too little time on the drawing board ... sums it up. Those who are at the decision making level in Railways never travel by train.
The calm and analytical way in which it was presented is refreshing
Oh man, this is such an eye opener. I wish some of the planners of the SWR construction wing would watch this video and acknowledge these issues and hopefully implement the changes.
Great work 👏
Never seen such a video on SMVT, thankyou and Kudos for hard work
Wow. a very rare skill i witnessed now - a thoughtful, original and well researched video instead of the same copy paste job that most indians do. so glad to see your work. will support in any way i can. keep up the good work.
Very well documented. Exactly what i felt when i visited this terminal. Myself with my parents and an infant had difficulty in finding place to sit and end up in standing for an hour until the platform got announced. Sometimes we shouldn’t forget the basics when designing the complicated piece.
1. Hearing such announcements of "airport type railway stations", i will optimistic about India
2. Seeing such poor execution, I feel sad about India
3. Watching this excellent video on this topic, i feel optimistic again about India.
0:18 what da dawg doing😅

What design? There is no word called "design" in the vernacular (according to Amit Shah)
@@tiju.jpeople are at fault. They vote for mandir, discuss religion with politics, don't boycott the media, don't criticize the government
makes me realise people dont care about the quality, its all about the name and fame. But the actual question is , is India even headed towards figuring out the core issues that makes our lives difficult. You explained it so nicely. I will go inside it now someday and try to figure things out.
Yotube is so random. I live in Sweden and this is in my recordations. I love it. U are great youtuber.

so well done! Visited this railway station last month. Was blown away by how clean and huge it was. Spent 15 mins there and was so frustrated about the staircase and the entry and exits.
Clean ? Maybe you need to get your eyes checked.
@@COOLSABYA2 Nope. The inside of the station is clean. I don't think you have visited.
Bro this is your first video im watching. I'm an avid follower of Indian railways but I haven't been too smvt yet. This is a beautiful video where you keep the bullshit low, you explain the issues and suggest solutions as well. I love you presentation!
Thank you so much bro!
From the UK, love this content! I would love to see more content about India on my feed. Such an important emerging economy and such wonderful people 🇮🇳🇬🇧
Form without function. This summarizes most of the recently developed public infra. Loved your video
This happens when the top of govt wants to give funds but the babus at lower level have to just show the expenditure, again a beurocracy problem
That's why we badly need private players in railway.
The contact must been given to some company which gave donation
40% Sarkara at centre as well.
@@BatukaBhairavaSevak_Tuhin that's why we badly need public with brains. The renovation was done by a Private company only.
Top notch production quality. Really want this channel to blow up. 🙏
The dog pose sleeping at 0:17 seconds is the highlight of this video😂😅🤣..!!
😂
Thoughtful, unbiased, apolitical, clear words, well-explained and sketched. Would be happy to view the Ladakh airport design analysis
So much wasted potential. I actively avoid trains that terminate here cause of the poor accessibility vis a vis multimodal connectivity. Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and even smaller stations like KR Pura and Baiyappanahalli are way better connected IMO. Great video though!
KRPura is underrated for its capacity tbh
Give some credits to the ministers kin. They have reputation of being consistent and efficient at wasting resources
Astounding information 🎉

lol , I noticed post reading your comment. Good, this poorly designed giant infrastructure atleast providing comfort to someone.
Maybe it learnt from humans

believe me I was about to type the same thing.

This channel need more recognition
Got this vid recommended randomly. 😂 And I'm happy that I found it. ❤ As a Bangalorean myself, I have visited this station 4 times to catch my train and I really didn't notice all these points that you made. I definitely agree with your remarks of this station after seeing the video. However, I didn't find that much of a problem in the times of my visit. But I do agree with your point that "They could've done better".
Excellent Work. 300 Crore of Tax payers money wasted
Officially one of my favourite channels on RUclips, binge watched all your videos and absolutely love them all. The growth you've seen in 3 days, around 2k subs to 8k is amazing. keep growing and keep making more videos❤
Wow, thank you so much sir!
Great Video! Loved the music and the general vibe! And ofcourse your comments on this feverdream of a train station are spot on! Looking forward for more
Great video. Good job at not just pointing out the issues but also stating basic fix and explanations. This is how it should be done!
This is soo well made, Proud of Indian content creators doing so! Keep going
This is what happens when engineers design and don't take help of architects
Great Observations, I hope people incharge of such projects are taking note.
Excellent videos 🔥
Your channel must have got 10K-25K subs by now, keep up with such amazing candid, fun & educational content!
Very accurate description. The term 'Over Engineered and Under Designed' is applicable to a lot of things which are visible in India today. Propaganda matters, the largest cricket stadium in the world is one example.
Really great assessment! No stupid comments, just clear cut logical and factual content.
Keep it up
This is very good coverage of infrastructural issues. The critique is in place.
At no point, did it feel like an attack, but educational and raising awareness.
excellent work!
This deserves to go viral
Even young people in India take constructive criticism quite negatively, that I found to my peril ! How would we better ourselves as a society, without being criticised ?
In Kerala also many stations had insufficient seating, as if S.R. runs trains with Japanese precision. Many of the seating is donated by clubs, railway users' forum, other organisations etc.
All in all, more power to your channel 💪 and a better nation ! And hope Babus stop treat citizens like cattle !
The dog is surely enjoying the new railway station. Laying on his back and exposing his belly is sure sign of his trust in this infrastructure project.
A complete video which addresses problem and solution ❤
briliant. Hopefully it creates awareness and the railway babus watch this as well :)
Railway babus doesn't give a crap they got govt jobs and they don't do thinking any more

This channel is underrated! Also, thanks for making content in English! ❤
I guess Engineer who designed the terminal in my opinion was a Covid Pass!!!!! :)
btw great quality video!!
He is Hindu. So mind your words
Even as a computer engineer i feel embarrassed.
I am a geologist not an engineer but subscribed your channel now. these are basics. They should not call themselves civil engineers if they can't do civil duties.!
do note, civil engineers aren't suppose to do civil duties
Lol, so all mechanical engineers need to be mechanics
It's scary to consider all the infrastructure being built during the urbanization of Bengaluru without understanding use cases and practicality.
becuase its designed by govt babu
Omg I've longed for Urbanist content from an Indian perspective. Kudos to you guys, you earned a subscriber!
04:43 Great music, what is it?
Love your insights, as always
Excellent.... You noticed, evaluated and said it ! Could you please forward this video to Prime Minister, Railway Minister, Chief Engineer of South Central Railway, its Zonal Manager, Divisional Engineers etc....
South Western(Bengluru) not South central(Hyderabad).
Very big building but no retiring rooms, 1 very small waiting hall. Had a terrible experience.
It's felt like water water everywhere not a single drop to drink.
Outstanding video the only good thing about this railway station is that you could make this video highly impressed! 😎
Is there a way to know who or which company did most of the design?
Or is it already public, but I am not aware?

Thank you, for this video! I notice the entrance every time I pass by this terminal .. wondering how odd the stairs are 😅and what the point was of building it!
Concrete + Glass =\= Development (I hope India learns soon)
1:00 To make a railway station that feels like an airport. Aaggghh How terrible 😡
What a lovely review. Hope SWR just watches this video, takes notes and immediately fix the issues raised in it and move on. Good lessons learnt and should in humility acknowledge the blunder openly and fix it. Good job. You should send this to them and maybe you already did.
This is a classic example of how the meaning of the phrase 'over engineered' is evolving before our eyes. "Over engineered" used to mean excessively robust. Now it means the opposite. Unnecessarily over complicated or feature laden and therefore the opposite of robust!
Focus on output rather design? Agile model is a move towards this approach. And i coukd say IT industry has been on a downfall since we left waterfall. Waterfall was one shot one goal approach. Agile is conflicts of interests. Those who come to the forefront for the management of the next sprint have their own methods they impose. Agile will never work in the long run. Humans are wasteful and agile gives them even more chances to be so.
ok where does the indian ocean goes, government can build artificial rivers upto bengaluru in my opinion! i know it will cost a billion of dollars but it industry cannot go to downfall which will lose more billions of dollars! many countries have tried the artifical river formation and they fixed their water solutions!
The money lies in building more and more without thinking, therefore that is the core of the government infrastructure design right now.
