    I could listen to Uncle Bobby's stories all day. A few years back I had the privilege of meeting him. Sitting near us was the most beautiful race car I ever saw. It was his 1972 Gurney Eagle. His eyes just light up when he talks about race cars. The guy has this passion about machinery that is boundless.

    Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I couldn't help but follow and cheer for the Unser family. I had the pleasure to meet Al Sr., Jr. and his uncle Bobby.
    I was dining at an Applebee's resturant on Coors Blvd. on the West Side of Albuquerque. I had my back to him. As I sat there I realized I had a Three Time Indianapolis 500 Champion sitting behind me. Said hello as I was leaving and shared a handshake as we spoke briefly, I apologized for interrupting his dinner. He thanked me for stopping by. A real classy move on his part. Oh how would I loved to sit with him and talk racing and aviation with him.

    Has motorsport ever had a better, more effective bullshitter than Bobby Unser?

    A friend of mine went to Pocono and got tires that were impossible to get unless you knew somebody and used them on his modified to really compete Bobby really was a great guy to help out with the tires and he gave him a fair price ,too .

    Is Pikes Peak the equvilent to the Nurburgring?

    • @ValenCarugo
      @ValenCarugo 4 года назад +3

      Pikes peak have 160 turns and nurburing 176

    • @michaelnelson3752
      @michaelnelson3752 3 года назад +6

      PIkes Peak is a hill climb up a mountain with paved/gravel and dirt road back then............the ring is a paved road racing circuit......both are extreme challenges to both car and driver.....but somewhat different in their demands......more high speed straights on the ring but more out of control sliding in turns at pikes peak.

    The last win in 81, he cheated Mario Andretti by passing cars in the caution lane. Indy Management the next day ruled Mario won the race; but upon appeal, the win was given back to Unser.

      @@lbowsk Ethically, yes, it was cheating. But the 1981 USAC rulebook did not outlaw what Bobby did. Exiting the pits under yellow, you couldn't pass the leader or the pace car. Bobby didn't do that. There was also no penalty stated (such as a stop and go, one lap penalty, etc) for the supposed infraction of passing the other cars. Bobby understood what he could get away with because USAC, the kings of screwing things up, had a faulty rulebook. It was no different than the 1000+ hp Ilmor-Mercedes engine Penske brought in 1994. It may have been against the spirit of competition, but it was not against the rules.
