"I kinda feel bad for enjoying it as much as I did" - We've all been there. After 4-5 more songs you're over that and you realize that they are just amazing. They also have many supporters in the Heavy Metal industry by now, e.g. Judas Priest, Rob Zombie, Korn, Metallica, Slayer, Dragonforce, etc.
I recommend you to listen to some some less "comedic" songs by them, like: Karate, Rondo of Nightmare, Akatsuki, Headbanger and Road of Resistance. It will blow your mind!

An excellent and honest reaction, thanks. Just a couple of points to clarify - Gimme Chocolate is the video people say to try just to get a WTF! reaction from people, they have so many far better songs (and meaningful - always positive messages, like Ijime, Dame, Zettai = Bullying, No More, Forever). I hope you will try one or two of the recommendations for real live performances to see what they are really about.
Unlike other J-pop bands Babymetal was formed and developed around the lead singer and her extraordinary vocals and stage presence - and she was still only 12 years old when that happened in 2010 (she is 21 now). She always sings live - there are a couple of small sections of a couple of songs where the backing track takes over, but those are obvious (the parapaparapapa bits in Gimme Chocolate, the bit when she is behind a mask in Megitsune, the bit where they are picking themselves off the floor in Karate, maybe one or two other bits in songs I can't think of), but no lip sync since a couple of very early performances in 2010/11 ... and she sings live, virtually pitch perfect, while dancing. She is an incredible talent.
Yes they were put together as a project - by one metalhead producer who saw Su-metal's potential for fronting a fusion j-pop/metal band when he saw he singing in her previous j-pop group when she was 10. They formed as a sub unit of a newly formed Idol group called Sakura Gakuin but were provided no extra funds by their talent agency, so their first performances and videos were done in borrowed clothes and they were self-funding - the talent agency saw it as the producer's pet project but thought he was mad and that there would be no profit in it for them.
Babymetal separated from Sakura Gakuin in 2013 to become a band in its own right when Su-metal 'graduated' (SG has a school theme and is for girls aged 11 to 15). Yui and Moa - the two younger girls - continued to work with both BM and SG until they too 'graduated' in 2015.
Since the end of 2013 (Gimme Chocolate was filmed at the last appearance of the fake 'Babybones' band miming the instrumentals) they have been supported in all live shows by the Kami Band made up of some of Japan's very best instrumentalists.
Babymetal have won many awards (I think 24 at the last count) for things such as best live act, best Japanese band, best metal video, best album of the year etc. They are essentially a live performance act - they are not like any other recording artist where the album is what you listen to while live performances are used to promote it. Babymetal albums give you an idea of what they will be playing live, but their live performances are where they are at their very best - and they mix things up, metal genres from power to speed, black to death, Viking folk metal and even Ska to full on prog metal ... and they can do them all so well. They may also throw in other genres to surprise you (reggae, rap, EDM etc).
You don't start a world tour headlining Wembley Arena and end it with a sell out two nights at Tokyo Dome (55k people per night) and play a completely different set list on each night if you're not really good - they did exactly that in 2016 when the girls were still only 18 and 17 years old.
Apologies for the overlong comment, but I have been watching and enjoying many of your previous reactions and thought you would both appreciate a little more detail. I hope you will try at least one more Babymetal track, but one of their better songs and live performances this time.

The music video of Gimme Chocolate is based on their concert, Legend 1997, back in 2013, and what you heard is the official studio recorded version of the song for their first album, not the live singing. However, in the concert they were singing live and not lip-syncing. They are professionals, well trained by professionals, and they are doing this since a very young age, therefore, singing while performing the choreography is not a problem to them back then and even now.

BABYMETAL started out lipsyncing for a very short time. This video was pretty early in their career, at that point they were singing live to a background track, the skeleton band was only miming. Also, in this MV you are hearing a studio recording to live video footage. But on that same show it got interesting: For the encore they introduced a real live band made up of some of the best Japanese Metal musicians and have played with them ever since. This took it to a whole new level. Please, even if you don't record a reaction video, watch one of those performances. It's beyond awesome! Like "Road of Resistance", for example: ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html . And yes, despite the jumping around and dancing, they do manage to keep the vocals stable. And the crowd interaction is exemplary. They are a perfect live band!
The bad thing about "Gimme Chocolate" is that the relatively weak verse often throws people off (at first). But still, you have to admit, it made you smile and shake your head. And that's what they are all about. They are pure fun, you can't help but smile all the way through it. During the first song there's scepticism and curiosity, the second adds fascination, and by the third you'll find it awesome! Their catalogue is very diverse, they explore various genres along the way, and like you noticed in this song, somehow they manage to make it work very well.
As I said, please do yourself a favour and watch a real live performance, and if you want to do us a favour as well, share it with us. :-) You will definitely up your current verdict of 80 / 84! Thank you!

Loved the reaction. I’ve been listening to metal the last 20 years (almost) and since I discovered BABYMETAL they’ve been easily in my top 3 favorite band of all times. They’re sooooo great. I HARDLY recommend a second round of BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance (Live in Japan). You guys will be blown away for sure.
P.S.: the “dancers” (Moa and Yui) were often singing playback but Su, the lead singer, did that only in their very early performance when they were like 9 and 10 years old. Then she’s always been live - her vocals are just that good. Like the bass player of the band (when he joined) was told to play as loud as possible cause of the power of Su voice ^^

I think they were all under 18 years old when this song was made. These girls are real metal veterans now. Since this song came out, they've spent a bunch of time touring, mostly in Europe, supporting bands like Metallica and Judas Priest. First of all welcome to Babymetal and great reaction. The comment about lipsyncing and that the vocals talent not being a focus might be true for other j- and k-pop groups but that is definatley not the case here. This Band was build around the vocal talent of the main singer Suzuka Nakamoto (SU-metal) and the reason why it looked like lipsyncing in this video was that the audio was the studio album audio dubbed over the actual footage, so it would work as a music video. I would suggest looking at Road of Resistances - live in japan (ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html), Rondo of Nightmare from Budokan (ruclips.net/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/видео.html) or even one of their new songs "Shanti" (haven't been given an actual title yet) (ruclips.net/video/w5AlEavdipA/видео.html) to get a look at what they actually sound like live :)

I recommend these songs from them.
    Rap/Nu metal: Onedari Daisakusen
Dark themed: Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro
Power Metal: Road of Resistance or Ijime, Dame, Zettai
Basically, their songs are all different from one another. :)

The Baby part of Babymetal is explained as a birth of a new type of metal, Kawaii Metal, a fusion of J-Pop/Idol music and metal.

  • @ozsctgeo2679

Babymetal invented the Kawaii Metal genre, and indeed there have been many attempts to copy them. None have really met with massive success, although quite a few groups have been influenced or inspired by them. One you might like to check out is Death Rabbits/Desu Rabbits as their lead vocalist is amazing despite her age. This group went on hiatus for a while, but is now working hard on a comeback.

I've been listening to metal for literally 30 years. BabyMetal is my favorite band of the moment. That's all I can say. Everyone is recommending Road of Resistance, Live in Japan, and normally I would be too, but they seem to have it covered. Also check out Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro so see a video that highlights The Kami Band, and Su-Metal's solo voice. And welcome to The Fox Hole.

As I recall, this sort of has to do with the aftermath of WW2. Japan had surrendered and American soldiers went into Japan to briefly occupy the country and see about doing what they could to ease the pain of the population. In an effort to gain the trust of the children and to show the kids that they were not the bad guys, American soldiers would hand out candy. Chocolate was the prized candy type. To the best of my knowledge, this is what the song is referring to.

Pretty soft entry to Babymetal. And it is actually so about the vocals. The concept was created around the voice of lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto). And "Baby" refers to a newborn genre rather than the age of the trio. Find something heavier by them. Plenty of recommendations below.

Before the lead singer was in Babymetal she was in another group called Karen Girl's, who did songs for an anime. Babymetal covered their Over the Future song and I think improved on the original.

You're right about your analysis, this is very much project based and a specific product. As has been said the group has evolved over time, so worth looking at later work.
Also, these kinds of idol groups are worked _hard_ and pretty prestigious in Japan, so yeah there is a lot of talent and effort involved.
Another band sorta like them is Band Maid - that's a group of all female musicians though. 🤘

Well, some info about this. Sorry, english isn´t my native language
Yes, Babymetal is different, even sometimes weird but don´t think that they are only "a cute face". Suzuka have a very powerful voice and she don´t "lip sync" in live. She sing on the stage with people like Rob Halford or Red Hot Chily Peppers. She have some solo songs live when you can hear his singular and powerful voice. She sings from a very early age and babymetal is still very active (new CD this year). But... the musicians in this video, the "babybones" are playing playback. This video is from a long time ago. They got a really good backup band, the "Kami Band" who is playing with them even now and have some of the finest metal music of Japan.
But Babymetal touch a lot of metal genres and sometimes it´s difficult to hear her voice shine. If you try something like "Akatsuki" or "No Rain no Rainbow" maybe you change your perception.
And yes, they do a lot of "weird things". A lot of times because... they are japanese and Japan have his own culture after centuries of isolation. I love japanese culture, y went to Japan a lot of times (maybe 7 or 8) and even now, there´s things who surprise me. Also Babymetal do some tributes to a legendary japanese metal band. The band who shakes Japan in the 80th and a band who any metal lover must know: X-Japan.
Seriously, if never hear of them check in RUclips, they are huge
Babymetal is near a decade on stages, they aren´t joke
Like Rap? Maybe you must check they last song: Pa-Pa-Ya. A misture of metal, idol and rap. Sounds bizarre, sounds weird but... is great

They've toured with huge metal bands such as METALLICA, ROB ZOMBIE, JUDAS PRIEST, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, EVEN LADY GAGA. They debuted on November 28th 2010. Suzuka Nakamoto was 12, and Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi were only 11 years old. They are on their 5th World Tour. You really really need to dive into the FOX HOLE and come to know the lives of all members and band members of my favorite Japanese band. Either they will capture your heart or you'll just hate them.

Hi Chuck and Juliet! Great reaction! Thanks for reacting to BABYMETAL! It was fun seeing your first impressions as someone completely new to them. Gimme Chocolate is their straight up shock value song and one of their most poppy, and if you were to just stop here I think you would be missing out on a great band, for this reason I don't really recommend Gimme Chocolate as an introduction to BABYMETAL. You guys were right when you said they're produced, they wern't organically formed by the members, but it's not really true that it's more about their image than the music. Their producer is a long time metal head and absolutely knows talent when he sees it. BABYMETAL is all about the complete performance. Think of them more like musical theatre. BABYMETAL is best live, so I would like to recommend a few live performances for you:
"Ijime, Dame, Zettai - Live at Sonisphere UK 2014" - The title translates to "Bullying, No more, Forever". This was the last song of their first big show in the west. The girls were scared the UK metal heads would throw bottles and boo them off.
"Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God Intro Live Budokan Black Night 2014" - The girls are backed by the Kami Band, some of the best metal musicians in all of Japan, and in my opinion the world. This is a Su-Metal (lead vocalist) solo.
"Road of Resistance - Live in Japan" - This is how BABYMETAL closes an arena show.
BABYMETAL are touring the US in September and if they're playing near you and you like what you see I would highly recommend going! They are amazing live! They have a new album coming out in October and they've released new singles but I would recommend not reacting to them yet, as their label is extremely liberal with the copyright strikes on the newer material.

They have changed over the years. Last year they went through the death of a guitarist after he had an accidental fall off a viewing platform (he was an amateur astronomer when not being a guitar god). Then one of the three girls left the group due to health issues.
They don't lip sync. That is not a true live video. The band was formed around Su. Her voice has gotten so much better over the years (not that it was bad, but she was barely a teen when they started).
After a rough 2018 they have rebounded well this year.
Please check out Road of Resistance Live in Japan. For newer look for Pa Pa Ya official video (if that won't be blocked) and one of my favorite new ones is Shanti live at Glastonbury.
If you want to see the Kami Band more, look for Rondo of Nightmare with Mischief of the gods intro. The 2nd guitarist to play his solo is Mikio, the band member that passed away last year, sadly at 36.

    @chuuei1729 5 лет назад +17

Thank you for reacting to BABYMETAL, as always a nice choice.
While being superfun that video creates so much misconceptions about them :/ For example that lipsyncing issue - it wasn't lipsynced, it's basically the album version just with concert images (thats why you can't her the audience). But you can't of course know that. And in fact, it's the complete opposite of your impression for their actual concerts. Su-Metal, the singer, is actually fantastic (there are lists which rate her the best idol singer in japan). Unfortunately theirs very little of their good stuff on yt, you could check out rondo of nightmare or akatsuki live performances, or karate at download 2016 to see a little bit how good she can actually sing. (The best one would actually be akatsuki red fox festival or syncopation from Legend S but no use to give you links, that video would be instablocked by yt anyways :( ) (Theres a video on yt called "SU-METAL Powerful Performances (BABYMETAL)" which is not good to react to since it jumps through different songs highlighting her singing, but you can watch this if you're interested to get a impression of her live singing)
A second misconception is their name coming from them being young. The Baby in BABYMETAL has nothing to to with their age but with them creating a new music genre by mixing metal music with influences from so many genres - which results in their genre which they call kawaii metal. They have songs which incorporate raps, have ska elements, eurodance, reagge or quite recently one with strong indian influences. And metal wise they have everything from ballads to folk metal, power metal, speed metal, trash metal and even black metal with death metal riffs in sis. anger. Heck, they even have a prog metal song with singing and dancing - noone in their right mind would dance and sing to a song which changes speed several times and meter over 60 times - they do. And like you said, you won't find something similar from other bands. Their are some Bands in Japan which you could technically fit into the Kawaii Metal genre but most of them are more pop with metal influnces, or rock bands which some count as kawaii metal . It always sound like fans are exaggerating but BABYMETAL indeed is very very unique in their combination.
And that you mentioned nyangostar (the apple mascot playing drums) is funny, because some of his most popular videos are actually him playing Babymetal songs ;)
You did a really nice reaction but to get a better feel of how they really are you should react to something more recent and especially something of their live performances. Some people already mentioned already Road of Resistance which is a absolutely fantastic song. Or you could react to Rondo of nightmare, karate at download 2016, idz at Sonisphere 2014. I would really aprecciate it if you do a follow up reaction.

I could never understand why I enjoy Baby Metal , I can't see myself slapping in a B.M. CD to pass those hours sitting in traffic, but the more I watch the videos I gotta admit, I kinda really like this band, my girl friend wanted to see them during there last world tour, I under estimated the demand for tickets and found that the show sold out in a day, anyway got a hold of two tickets ($$) and found the live show was probably the best concert I have ever been to, and Iv'e seen Zep, pink Floyd +. I still don't understand, but I am loving this band
