The Intransitive Dice paradox breaks our brains

  • There is a paradox about three dice. It is possible that dice A beats dice B more than half the time, and it is also possible that the same applies for B against C and for C against A. This is a paradox in the sense that there doesn't seem to be a solution but, in fact, there is.
There are other ones, like the imp in a bottle paradox, or the bridge paradox, or contradicting statements that form a never-ending loop.
I put a lot of time into the VFX for this video! Please consider watching the other as well!

3:22 This argument breaks down when you realise you can simply not tell the person you're selling to what the effects and/or conditions of the bottle actually are.

Yep, I kind of omitted that detail from the story: in this scenario everyone is aware of how ownership of the bottle works!

If you have two currencies, say Euro and USD, you could sell it at 1€, wait until the Euro is above the dollar, sell it at 1$ (now less than 1€), then wait until the dollar is higher, sell at 1€ (now less than 1$), repeat.

First thing I though of was selling it for negative dollars. I like your answer better, much more sustainable.

I remember hearing about a story like that once. It ended up in the hands of someone who figured he was going anyway. But the prices did switch over to a currency that could be less than a cent.

    • @pointless_knowledge
      @pointless_knowledge  Месяц назад +1

Yes that's the story! I kinda shortened it, but the ending is pretty much the same: they switch to the lowest valued currency in the world (which belonged to some african country) and then one of the characters is screwed for good as they buy it for 1 of that currency and there's no way to ever sell it at a lower price

Well, the one I heard had a couple characters trying to spare trying to spare each other. One of them arranges an intermediary to buy it for two of the currency so that the one trying to save the other will buy it for one. The intermediary refuses to sell on the grounds that he is going anyway. (The item in his possession makes no difference.) It could be a different variant.

Plato should let Socrates pass first, and later throw him into the water. He said he would allow passage on a true statement -- but said nothing about what else he would do later. He said he would throw him in on a false statement -- but not that a false statement was the only condition under which he would throw him in. Allowing him to pass makes the statement true, which obliges Plato to throw Socrates in. Later.

If you want to take it to the extreme you could even say that Plato let's Socrates cross the bridge after 20 years, as silly quirky Plato did an oopsie by not specifying WHEN Plato is going to let him through

For the end riddle, he didn't say the sentence has to be a true or false statement so he didn't have to play by his intentions and could have said something that has no true or false value, or is indeterminate such as "you may throw me into the river" either is a better answer he could have given.

Fun fact: This is a solution with 6 dice. Looking at this solution, you may see, how you could find a solution. You "move the row from left to right".
    1 2 3 4 5 6
    12 7 8 9 10 11
    17 18 12 14 15 16
    22 23 24 19 20 21
    27 28 29 30 25 26
    32 33 34 35 36 31
The winning percentage in both cases is the same. 55,56%.
In the case of the video you might compare it to this:
You roll two 3 sided die and win 2 of 3 ties.
    In my case:
You roll two normal die and win 5 of 6 ties.
Both has a winning percentage of 55,56%. With more sides, winning chance of ties increases, but chance of ties decreases.
